#NVedchat is dedicated to increasing communication and collaboration of education related topics in the State of Nevada. Originally, created by Mr. Snehal Bhakta.
Welcome to #NVedchat. Tonight’s topic is #CSEquity or #Equity in Computer Science and Technology.
We are tonight's moderator...the Local Affiliate of @NCWIT (National Center for Women & Information Technology).
Happy #CSEdWeek Everyone!
Hi. Kevin from Indianapolis, IN. I teach biology and physics @LCHSBears. The first time I sent an email was in college at @uindy in 1994-1995 (I think). #NVedchat
A1-It's when a diverse group of individuals can work together to accomplish a goal no matter what race, gender, color, etc...
We are not there yet, but hopefully moving in the right direction. #NVEdchat#CSEquity
HI! Data/Technology Analyst from Las Vegas here.
First time I sent an email was in college. I had never even used the internet until then. What about you, @RMarkNewburn, @fortiz505? #NVedchat#CSEquity#CSEdWeek
Maggie From Las Vegas. I can’t remember my first email? I know I used email in college, had a college email, aol & remember a friend who was working at google at the time set me up with first gmail explaining how much better it was going to be #NVedchat
A1 #equity in computer science will happen when everyone views it as a piece that schools be included in core subjects not an extracurricular class, that only a few students can do. #nvedchat
A1: Equity in Computer Science/Tech means all students should have access to real opportunities to solve a real problem using tech throughout high school at the latest as a cross-curricular, integrated learning experience. #nvedchat#ClosingTheCriticalThinkingGap#edchat
R2: this year I have started a local chapter of @SHPE. We are partnered with @RollsRoyce with wonderful engineers. We include students of all ethnic backgrounds. In class, I am engaging with @tinkercad@WeVideo and @Flipgrid along with @CanvasLMS. Lots for my Ss. #NVedchat
1000% agree and we have to start as soon as we can to ensure young women, minorities, underrepresented, and underserved students populations have an opportunity just like everyone else. #NVedchat#CSEquity
A2 try to make it relatable. Something they are all interested in will get more attention. Trying to explain #augmentedreality uses in medical training are more relatable to students when I discuss in context of Snapchat which they can relate to #NVedchat
And I would add that it needs to be demystified. The lift to start thinking about code as just another format, another canvas for showing mastery really isn't too crazy once you get used to it. #nvedchat

A3 educators & parents need to learn more themselves so they can help make it relatable fun & possible for students @CCSD_FACES is doing a great job offering classes to elementary parents #NVEdchat
A3-Start early and often. We live in a global, technology world.
Everyone needs to be exposed to computer science or technology at different levels and multiple times. It's not something you learn once...it must be something we continually learn to understand. #NVedchat
R3: we assume that kids know more than adults. It’s not always the case. Sometimes the students don’t know any more than adults. Why not have Ss and Ts and Ps all learn together. It lowers barriers and false assumptions. #NVedchat
Working together and collaborating is how we can all learn together what the technology is and how best to use or apply it for good in the world. #NVedchat#CSEquity
A3: Confidence is hard in a culture of rule-following and getting the right answer within a set amount of time. As a Comp Sci grad, I never got a single one of my projects to work right. Are we ready to make failure part of the process and not punitive? @codeorg#nvedchat#stem
R4: I have incorporated using @1stmakerspace 3D printers in my classroom. @LTSFoundation provided funding for this last year. I have my Ss design on @tinkercad and we then print. Everyone can create models and they have a physical product when they are finished. #NVedchat

#Failure is the first step to #Success in my book. We have to show all students how to fail so that they know how to succeed.
#NVedchat#CSEquity
A4 I usually look to my friends #PLN that know a lot more but I think we can all start educating ourselves & adding in projects that use #criticalthinking & problem solving until we get closer to incorporating #CS in all subjects #NVedchat@SnowVegas@itchcompsci
A4: Not a Comp Sci resource, but a shift. I've read a lot about how few Black/Brown students take AP Comp Science and I don't think that matters. I'd be happier if all students found a "why" to motivate them to try it and learned enough to tell boss coders what to do! #NVedchat
