The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
I use lots of tech and my kids use tech ... but I am also blunt with them ... I don’t sugar coat anything ... I see them on social media ... and sometimes I say things that hurt but sometimes they need to hear it #edchatph
Nah digital citizenship is fine. Now 21st century skills, that’s where your problems come from. It be pretending that creativity is something new that involves apps and pushes for skills to equip tech companies with employees rather than lifelong learners. #edchatph
I'm interested in what you're saying here, Dennis. Can you tell me more about the idea of a digital wall? Are you meaning increased protections? Thanks for sharing the "unpopular thought". I think it's important to hear every argument! #edchatPH
Thanks @TarniaCovooper & @Mrs_Gilchrist for such an interesting discussion tonight - it was on fire with so much discussion - and thanks to all
#edchatPH
I wouldn't throw it all out. (Who defines a farce? Media literacy is a "thing" but pretty important.) But to overuse cliched metaphors, if we're all singing the same tune we don't see the forest for the trees. (And question everything!) So your perspective is valuable. #EdChatPH
The same issues and conos take place about any new ideas in education. Look back to when sex ed was being intro’ed into schools. Same concepts of too much/ not enough, parent resp/ teach resp. There will be something in future that superveds the SM debates...contd
And it's only recently that I have seen it's not only a problem with notifications disturbing the path of learning we are trying to get embedded. The emotional trauma is disturbing. #edchatPH
I think it is a farce ... my kids mock the “internet safety” lectures we are mandated to give every year ... we treat this stuff like it is a freakin checkbox ... a means to be able to stand on a soap box and say we are trying to protect our kids without really doing it #edchatPH
Understood. Has there been an attempt to model reflection, to help them recognize how it's affecting them? I know focusing on that can just add to the distraction away from other topics, but reflection helps growth and learning in general. #EdChatPH
I meant tough because I was making myself be more responsible and balanced. The Ss were great. Actually last semester was one of my best semesters as a teacher. #edchatPH

Excellent points, Liz! Social media is a part of our world. We need to empower students with the skills and character to use it effectively and respectfully. #edchatPH
So what I am hearing is, perhaps, a call for a more realistic and modern way of educating young people about social media. The cookie cutter, same-speech-every-year approach is getting laughed off. What actions can be taken by educators to make it accessible and real? #edchatPH

Couldn’t agree more. This is 2018 and social media is now part of our social and education fabric! Refusing to use it or expose Ss to it as a teacher is comparable to biting your head in the sand! #edchatPH
Then let's stop the Internet safety lectures. I'd mock them too. What are they creating with this stuff? How is it facilitating their learning? If not much, adults and kids should be held accountable for that. But that's not a problem with the tools themselves. #EdChatPH
Stop outsourcing it to police officers, for one thing. How'd that work out for the war on drugs?
Also, any same-every-year approach no matter what it is SHOULD be laughed off. As well as speechifyin'. #EdChatPH

I talk to them ... I call them out on social media ... I tell them they are good enough. And yes I tell them to stop sending pictures of their ding dings and who whos ... I’m in their lives to the point where they don’t want to let me down #edchatPH
A couple of years ago I accompanied my daughter on a field trip to a university where they learned about the adolescent brain. I was so curious what was going on in their own brains learning about how problematic they were! #EdChatPH
All schools and districts should take a hard look at how they are educating our world's leaders about social media use. If old approaches are stale, let's make a new product! #edchatPH Great insight by @JeremyDBond

I think one of the biggest problems is that so many sources tell kids they can't change how they feel, so they are at the mercy of their fickle feelings. #edchatPH
I don't bemoan particular terms for existing. I get how some people get carried away and one person's book becomes gospel (and often entirely misunderstood), but sometimes we need someone to define concepts to help us process them. And sometimes we challenge them. #EdChatPH

The middle school mind is a mess ... and I tell my kids this ... I also let them know it is ok ... they’re ok ... and most of the time all they want to hear is that they are ok. They need that beacon of light instead of someone constantly telling them what not to do #edchatPH

Agreed! The students we teach are less prepared, potentially, than their peers if they aren't wise to the nuances of social media. WE as teachers also become anachronistic if we don't keep abreast of what is current amongst the populations we serve. #edchatPH

Let’s be honest the core of being a kid has not changed ... outside forces may change but the core issue ... self identity ... self awareness... is still the same. #edchatPH
In reply to
@JeremyDBond, @TarniaCovooper, @steven_kolber
Yup. There's also someone out there who might scoff at the terms "self-awareness" and "self-identity" too. But whatever you call it, it's part of humanness. #EdChatPH

@DennisDill, @TarniaCovooper, @steven_kolber
Absolutely. We are doing a complete disservice if we deny them #tech in school, mind you, we must balance our activities and make sure they don’t get too much screen time! That’s the #OutdoorLearning advocate in me! 😉 #edchatPH

How do you mean? That they can't overcome those brains of theirs? I do wonder... how many of us have read how we're supposedly supposed to be and thought, "This isn't remotely like who I am?" #EdChatPH
A3 it definitely has in my classroom as long as you know the purpose of why you’re using it. I’ve had the best class connections with @teresagross625 for 3yrs now and all the skype activities i had with @Peterbr11@standouted#edchatPH
Very interesting to read this. Gives me a new perspective on the pressures older children face daily. I’ve always been an #EarlyYears and lower elementary teacher so obviously my Ss don’t face these challenges/stresses! #edchatPH
