#personalizedPD chat. A fast-paced, fun chat to discuss personalized professional development for educators. We discuss what it is, why it's better than traditional PD, how to create personalized PD opportunities, how to scale it from individuals to districts, and how to inspire it from individuals to districts to want more and more of it. Hosted each week by Jason Bretzmann @jbretzmann and Kenny Bosch @KennyBosch and moderated each week by a guest moderator. 8pm Central each Tuesday.
Here we go! This chat will use the common Q1, A1, Q2, A2, etc... format.
First thing...let’s start with Introductions. Type your name, where are you from, and if you district paid for an all-expenses two month vacation this summer, where would you go?

Hello! I am Kenny Bosch, co-host and co-author of the #personalizedPD book. https://t.co/UKHXahxKzN
Thank you for joining us tonight.
Take a minute and invite some friends to join us.
Amy Dawson, ITF in North Carolina. I am already going to Europe w/ my family so if my district wants to cut me a check, my credit card would appreciate it! #personalizedpd
Q1. Inclusion is just not for students in Special Education classes. What does Inclusion mean to you? When you see that word where does your mind go? #personalizedPD

Hi, everyone. I'm Suzy with Heartland Learning Center. I'm in the Heartland! :-) Hmmm...I think Finland to dig up some roots. I'd also really love to ride an elephant though, and I'm guessing there aren't many of those in Finland. #personalizedpd

Following some cool chats tonight! Please join us for the inaugural #APTeach chat on 4/4 at 8pm CST. Hope to see all those inside and out of the Advanced Placement community join. #worldgeochat#personalizedPD#PIAchat
A1: When I hear inclusion, I think about least restrictive environment. What is the best place for optimal learning? How can we achieve that for such diverse learners? #personalizedPD
A1. @Flipgrid and YouTube are my primary ones. I have my online Ss do a flipgrid intro so I can “meet” them. Used it for concept reviews student made for each other. With YouTube some students made a video portfolio for a final. #PersonalizedPD
A1: Lack of inclusion makes me think of our gender gap in the tech field...& the ethnic gap in the access to technology. When will that inclusion become a larger priority? #personalizedPD
A1) Inclusion means that we include all people everywhere. In the classroom, I make sure that we include all students. I have been told too many times, that my kids are not part of something. Little do they know! #personalizedPD
A1: When I think of inclusion I think of planning my instruction to meet the needs of all types of learners. Being creative and making sure I reach all Ss. #personalizedPD

A1: It means dropping all the labels that separate/divide Ss. If strategies are good enough for some Ss shouldn’t other Ss have access to those strategies too? #personalizedPD

A1: Each ss feels free to be himself or herself. Each chooses how the thinking is communicated to show learning. Personal conn are encouraged and reinforced. Individ. strengths are highlighted, weaknesses developed. ind. Strengths are used to meet a coll. goal. #personalizedPD
#personalizedpd Jessica from TN, but live in WI - 6th grade sci, 7th grade math, 7th/8th STEM teacher The vaca question is tough b/c I love traveling - some bucket list places are Hawaii, Curacao, Philippines, & Thailand.
A1: When I hear inclusion, I think about least restrictive environment. What is the best place for optimal learning? How can we achieve that for such diverse learners? #personalizedPD
A1: Inclusion is about all students learning together, being respected and supported for who they are, and getting the support they need to have their chance at learning. #personalizedPD
Q2. One of the benefits of Inclusion is Friendship. Do you feel that you and your school are doing enough to make sure all of your students are making quality friendships and/or relationships? #personalizedPD
A1: Inclusion means that everyone has equal access to everything in my classroom. From curriculum to technology, inclusion and equality for all. #personalizedPD
A2: My district does a pretty good job of building relationships and a good sense of community, but I still feel like we could do more. #personalizedPD
A2: I love how our 8th Grade Green Team students partner with the Life Skills classes in their encore rotations. Our social workers have coordinated a Lunch Buddies program, as well. #personalizedPD
Q2. One of the benefits of Inclusion is Friendship. Do you feel that you and your school are doing enough to make sure all of your students are making quality friendships and/or relationships? #personalizedPD
A2: We're sure trying! As an early childhood person, I firmly believe that taking the play out of the primary grades has led to kids struggling in this area. #personalizedPD#SEL
A2 We have some students specifically working on friendship and relationship goals. We also have a teacher that supports social skills in a small gp.#PersonalizedPD
A2: I start relationship building the first day of school. I want my Ss to value each other and recognize that their differences are what makes them so amazing. We are a school family. #personalizedPD
A2: In the lower grades, yes. In 9-12, there is work. The unfortunate side effect of inclusion is that valuable friendships are never formed b/c Ss are often "grouped" w/ other Ss just like them. #personalizedpd
A2: my ss try to comm. wth some ss that have diff. Comm.- a fist bump, a high five, an attempt at a conversation are the norm. When they participate in the curr. act., they wait patiently, silently, and give tons of reaction time and scaffold naturally for them! #personalizedPD
A1 Inclusion - the math teacher in me is thinking examples and non examples... so inclusion is doing everything it takes to make sure no one feels excluded. That alone though isn't enough, we have to go the extra step to make sure everyone belongs.
#personalizedPD
A2: I love how @wertigers is mixing up who Ss sit with at lunch. Using the time to help kids meet new Ss instead of separate themselves from each other.
A1: Hearing Inclusion my mind goes to 1-Masterfully differentiating so that every St, regardless of current academic ability, is given the support they need to grow. And 2- “🙈” because I know many Teachers need support with this and the support isn’t always there #personalizedPD
A2) As a classroom, I think we are doing enough. As a school, I think we can and should do more to oversee our students are making positive friendships. #personalizedPD
A2: Absolutely!! ALL students, grades 1-6, participate in Houses. These Houses meet a couple of times a month, they are mixed ages, and there is also a lesson and then activity. #PersonalizedPD
A2: Nope. We talk & build relationships. We do normal things that humans do, but we don't intentionally focus our efforts enough on building community, friendships, & understanding in my classes. I've got a plan for the future. #TheFutureIsNow#personalizedPD
#personalizedpd Jessica from TN, but live in WI - 6th grade sci, 7th grade math, 7th/8th STEM teacher The vaca question is tough b/c I love traveling - some bucket list places are Hawaii, Curacao, Philippines, & Thailand.
A2: I have had to force inclusion at my school in all areas. Inclusion is a mindset and it can be a hard thing to learn. I do have one amazing 2/3 combo teacher who embraces my kids like they are her own! #PersonalizedPD
A2. There is always work to be done. With social media and every little reaction going on it, some students become a negative focus and it creates a tense atmosphere. Through character lessons and interventions it minimizes impact. #personalizedPD
Q2. One of the benefits of Inclusion is Friendship. Do you feel that you and your school are doing enough to make sure all of your students are making quality friendships and/or relationships? #personalizedPD
A2: There is always room for improvement, but I am amazed the the caring and acceptance that occur between our students of various abilities. Several students walk others to class. They recently attended the Special Olympics games to support a classmate. #personalizedPD
Q2. One of the benefits of Inclusion is Friendship. Do you feel that you and your school are doing enough to make sure all of your students are making quality friendships and/or relationships? #personalizedPD
A2: My 2nd grader has a positive pal program at his school (a secret kid who leaves you notes about how nice you are). This led to him being nicer to his big brother & he started a "program" at our house! Can I do this with my HS students? #TooOld#personalizedPD
A2 1/2 Sometimes I feel that we're nailing it & others I feel we can never do enough. When I think of the toughest S we work with & all the creative ways our staff goes above & beyond to reach them I say YES, but sadly there are probably still kids we miss #personalizedPD
Q3) If you feel that you are not doing enough to help your students make quality friendships, what can you do tomorrow or next week to start that change? If you feel your school is helping please pass 1 strategy along. Look for the book #personalizedPDhttps://t.co/5upExNZz0n
A3: I'd like to do more with encouraging students who may not usually work together consider doing exactly that. I want to help new friendships build and hope that trend catches on like wildfire! #personalizedpd
We divided classes into 4 college teams. They earn points for attendance, character traits, random challenges, etc. We have a house party each grading period to celebrate successes #PersonalizedPD
A1: Hearing Inclusion my mind goes to 1-Masterfully differentiating so that every St, regardless of current academic ability, is given the support they need to grow. And 2- “🙈” because I know many Teachers need support with this and the support isn’t always there #personalizedPD
A3 I have personally played soccer, frisbee and catch with students who have no experience playing games. It's hard to make friends if you don't know how to play anything #personalizedPD
A2 2/2 I have tried 2 new strategies this yr that I feel make a huge difference. 1 lunchroom walk thru on the daily - few eat alone & it's not the same s daily. 2 an idea I borrowed from @mrmatera where my team went thru & sought out s we didn't feel connected w #personalizedPD
A3: I think this comes down to fostering relationships through showing respect to all; learning from others (Ss and Ts) and not being afraid to step outside a comfort zone. I can encourage others to do the same. #personalizedpd
A3: We try to be intentional about encouraging others in Drama and in class. Sending people out with a smile on their face is so essential. We will encourage kids to specifically encourage someone else, sharing what they appreciate about them. #personalizedpd
Q3) If you feel that you are not doing enough to help your students make quality friendships, what can you do tomorrow or next week to start that change? If you feel your school is helping please pass 1 strategy along. Look for the book #personalizedPDhttps://t.co/5upExNZz0n
A3. I have talked with Ss who tell me how a friend expects “help” with assignments but never help the other (I mean copy, no wait)...we talk about how it’s more of a relationship of opportunity than anything else. So I guess help them to see real friendships.
A3: Lots of role play and modeling expectations for group work, how to respond to each other, etc. Structured conversations, sentence stems... #personalizedPD
A3: Our HS has PRIDE time built in to each week. An advisory block where Ts & Ss talk about what makes York great & what types of things need to be worked on to make for a better community. Powerful stuff! #personalizedPD
It's time for the #Lurker shout out!
We love our lurkers at #personalizedPD
I know you are sitting there enjoying the chat with a smile on your face! We would love to hear your thoughts. Join in, or not, it's cool.
A3) We can always do more to help our students make friends. I often will teach the kids how to introduce themselves to others, with whatever words they commonly use. #personalizedPD
A3: Findings ways for students to help each other is a great start. Mixing up groupings and sharing responsibilities for a class project works too! #personalizedPD
Strategic seating arr.! I put ss who may need a friend next to someone who would be a perfect fit! I keep strong personalities away from the shy, quiet ones, even though management-wise for me, that’s a perfect combo! But it’s not fair to the quiet one! #personalizedPD
A3: A small thing I did recently was to read the book Wonder to my Ss. We had some great discussions about the effects of one person's kindness and how we can start that movement to include others in our groups. #personalizedPD
A3 we have BoysToMen program for or 4th-5th graders that's really helped. Focuses on relationships, peer pressure, good choices. They dress up every Weds. Starting girls group next year. #PersonalizedPD
Our HS has a PRIDE club. You can imagine how that went over in western NC. But, kudos to those that still lead and encourage a safe space for all. #PersonalizedPD
A3: We have a lunch buddies program where students in our Life Skills program are matched with another classmate. They eat lunch together once a week and then play board games. These relationships extend throughout the school.
A3: The 2/3 combo teacher started sending her students to our classes to read to our kids after we included them in a Dr.Seuss celebration! We hope to flourish this relationship and set an example for other grade levels! #PersonalizedPD
It always puts a smile on my face to see the kids and how they look out for their "buddies"! Truly one of the greatest highlights in my day. #personalizedPD
Q2. One of the benefits of Inclusion is Friendship. Do you feel that you and your school are doing enough to make sure all of your students are making quality friendships and/or relationships? #personalizedPD
A3 I make time to get to know my Ss. Was at a meeting last week & a parent told me her HOA was for her son to have more friends. I set up her son the next day to join a club #personalizedPD
I see this a lot on classroom game days which I offer as an incentive. It has huge student buy in and secretly I love how they're all speaking, listening, cooperating and problem solving... they think it's all fun, but the truth is we're still learning.
Q4) Kids and adults alike can always use guidance on building connections and friendships. Do you have adults model introductions and asking for contact information? Can you? What positives do you think this could bring to your classroom and or campus? #personalizedPD
A4: I spend a lot of time interacting with as many Ss as I can at my school. When opportunities arise, I talk to them about how to be a good friend. In class, we will discuss how to treat each other. #PersonalizedPD
Q4) Kids and adults alike can always use guidance on building connections and friendships. Do you have adults model introductions and asking for contact information? Can you? What positives do you think this could bring to your classroom and or campus? #personalizedPD
A4: Our Digital Citizenship teacher at our MS does introduce this topic. Advisories and the guidance team help to reinforce this as well, but we could do a better job with Ss that move into our district for sure. #personalizedPD
A4: I am in and out of schools and know that we have pockets of Ts that stress the importance of introducing yourself, making eye contact and listening. Wish more in the school community would listen. It's amazing what you can learn #personalizedpd
A4 I don't think the adults modelling how to intro yourself is probably the best model, we handle it differently. I think if we could get older S's to model meeting kids it would be better #personalizedPD
A4b: I have even done some friendship matching. Since I know what many Ss are interested in, I will sometimes encourage to meet another student who shares the same interest. Or, I will talk up a student to others so kids will want to hang out with him or her. #personalizedpd
A4) In my class, we role play so that the students can learn how to meet someone they have never met before. This does need to be age appropriate. The more comfortable people on your campus are, the less negative behaviors you will see. #personalizedPD
A4: that sounds like a fantastic idea! When adults or kids come I to my room that my kids don't know we teach the kids how to say hello and introduce themselves. Modeling is such a great tool and an easy thing to implement!#PersonalizedPD
Oh absolutely. If I have the opportunity I make sure they are put in contact with anyone and everyone that will make a positive impact on their lives. #personalizedPD
A3: Pair and group students purposefully! Matchmaker is one of the many hats I wear 😂 Also, being inclusive in my room is a requirement & my ss know the word. We don’t exclude each other. If someone wants to join your reading game, you welcome them to sit down #personalizedPD
A4: I have talked to several Ts about this and we agree that it is a need in our school. Many of our Ss do not know how to interact in a conversation or when meeting and greeting people. #personalizedPD
Sorry @tracyscottkelly and #personalizedPD. Gotta dip. Attending to a sleepover party and the pizza just arrived. Have a wonderful remainder of the chat. Great work tonight!
Sorry, I have been quite rude. Where are my manners? I did not even introduce myself. My name is Eric, and I am a Sped/Math teacher. I work at an international school in Brazil. #personalizedpd
Jumping in super late!!!
A1: Inclusion means all kids working together with teacher modifying and adapting to needs to make it work the best they can for all kids #PersonalizedPD
Q1. Inclusion is just not for students in Special Education classes. What does Inclusion mean to you? When you see that word where does your mind go? #personalizedPD
This has worked well for me too. For my Yearbook class, they had to go out and sell ads and books, take pictures, be bold...I modeled it first, but then we practiced a bunch before they had to do it for real. #personalizedpd
A2: Most of the staff is very focused on kids being kind and being good friends. I think it's important that we help kids build authentic friendships and not forced friendships made by teachers #personalizedPD
Q2. One of the benefits of Inclusion is Friendship. Do you feel that you and your school are doing enough to make sure all of your students are making quality friendships and/or relationships? #personalizedPD
A4: I think the idea has a lot of potential. We have a weekly 2nd step program that models social/emotional skills and I know we do this in our Life Skills classes, but school-wide, I’d like to see how much it’s being done. #personalizedPD
Q4) Kids and adults alike can always use guidance on building connections and friendships. Do you have adults model introductions and asking for contact information? Can you? What positives do you think this could bring to your classroom and or campus? #personalizedPD
I agree. Ss, now more than ever, are lacking in what we used to consider basic communication skills. We have to explicitly teach these skills. I see this so many times with my Ss. I have had to be the mediator on so many occasions. #personalizedPD
Q5. Inclusion can also have an affect on academic success. Many if not all kids can benefit from tutoring, or even social tutoring. If u have a tutoring club what could you do to get more kids involved tomorrow? Check out #GameOfStories at https://t.co/3EbJuveVh1#personalizedPD
Do you find that this is easier to do in elementary? Few Ts do this in middle and high school. In fact, most Ts think is strange that I have matched Ss as friends. Some kids need help in making friendships. #PersonalizedPD
Thinking this is appropriate at all ages. We need to keep reinforcing these things for all students even at the oldest levels. My Ss must greet me before asking questions. It's just the way humans interact, right? "CanIGotothubathroom?"
"Hello." #personalizedPD
A4: I'm ALWAYS modeling. I never assume that kids know how to get or keep friends, from asking someone if they want a hug to using the best words when you're mad. There's so much to learn and practice #personalizedPD
Q4) Kids and adults alike can always use guidance on building connections and friendships. Do you have adults model introductions and asking for contact information? Can you? What positives do you think this could bring to your classroom and or campus? #personalizedPD
A5: Our HS has a peer-taught writing center. It's a great opportunity for Ss to interact. It also allows students to build leadership skills. #personalizedpd
A5 We don't have a tutor club, some of my S's stay in for homework club with me at lunch for extra help. We have had a social skills club at lunch run by our Social Worker #personalizedPD
A5: I started an after-school peer tutoring program with my Ss with special needs in mind, but it grew way beyond that. We work with grades 6-11 now. I actively recruit Ss, train them, and ask them to spread the word about the program. #personalizedpd
A5: My Ss have set math goals that they want to reach before the end of the year and they are going to start working with me and their peers before school to try to meet them. I think this will be a great time for them to work together and make connections. #personalizedPD
a3 1/2 - Think about it Thurs - I pose a ? to Ss - either via GC or a graffiti whiteboard - either way it's a tool I use to gauge where individuals are struggling & also how I can help the group at lg It's always followed up by a chat & I'm amazed how S are #personalizedPD
A5 I run a homework group after school twice a week to help complete homework, practice skills and work with peers. Parents appreciate the help as well as the kids. Other Ts run similar groups in school. #personalizedPD
To be honest, I have tried really hard to make sure that the after-school peer tutoring program is part of the school culture, but I have failed. It is too tied to me, which means when I leave this school, I fear it will end. #personalizedpd
Last Question. Inclusion is still a new way of doing things for many educators. What is one way in which you can help a teacher with Inclusion or one shortcoming or concern you think you may have? #personalizedPD
I agree about the Ts not knowing the Ss as well. A friend of mine went from teaching 5th grade to teaching middle school. He commented that it is not as easy to develop a relationship with Ss because you have them for less time. #personalizedPD
Happy to have you moderate our chat! Glad to have @k_curiousg22m join us for her first chat! We are honored to have both of you join the #personalizedPD family.

LA) I can make sure that I promote the #growthmindset of Inclusion. I can make myself available to answer any and all questions for staff members about Inclusion. #PersonalizedPD
The best thing we have done is have complete buy in by all involved. Sped Ss are not my Ss, they are everyone's Ss. We are also equal Ts and all kids come to both Ts for help. #personalizedPD
Last Question. Inclusion is still a new way of doing things for many educators. What is one way in which you can help a teacher with Inclusion or one shortcoming or concern you think you may have? #personalizedPD
I think we need to remind educators that if we don't stress inclusion, then who will? All means all. No one should be left out. If not us, then who? #personalizedpd
I think a big shortcoming is educating teachers the importance of inclusion! A lot think it is a nuisance, not understanding the benefits for all Ss in their lives now and for the future!#PersonalizedPD
A6: I feel like a shortcoming could be the Ts unwillingness to have the student(s) in her class and/or the lack of para support to help the S be successful. #personalizedPD
Final thought. Thank you for being here tonight. Now go out and make your life and the lives of those around you better. Thanks again to @kennybosch for allowing me to host tonight’s #personalizedPD!
It's a family affair here at the #personalizedPD chat. Glad you were both here and shared this journey together. What a wonderful chat Tracy and Maren!
