Q4) Approximately 20% of school-aged kids are dealing with a mental, emotional or behavioral health disorder—but schools don't have enough counselors, psychologists or social workers. How do you help kids manage behavioral health challenges in the classroom? #MEMSPAchat
A4 This is the big question that I think we are all struggling with. Many of our Ts have implemented mindfulness, mindset work in their classrooms. An easy tool many use is Sitting Like a Frog it's a CD that have 3 to 8 minute mindfulness activities Ss can do. #MEMSPAchat
Q4) Approximately 20% of school-aged kids are dealing with a mental, emotional or behavioral health disorder—but schools don't have enough counselors, psychologists or social workers. How do you help kids manage behavioral health challenges in the classroom? #MEMSPAchat
A4: 1st step is to understand what trauma is & implications of ACEs on our Ss. Strategies that are good for students affected by trauma or mental illness are good for ALL students. Relationships first, assume good intent, know that feelings often don't match actions #MEMSPAchat
A4 - First, wrap our arms around kids and their parents as a staff and let them know we love them, care about them, and will work with them. Our MTSS team works to coordinate resources and supports, brainstorm ideas, and teams with staff to problem solve together #memspachat
A3: Structured “brain breaks” when transitioning in the class. One of our teachers has kids do exercises as they spell their weekly words. Also, just nature walks around the school grounds helps for structured breaks. #MEMSPAchat
A4. Area I need to grow in. But have picked up to from my awesome counsler, SW, and @sccresa support coaches I have worked with. Try to give them time to calm down and refocus. Use the strategies we have in place. Some days are better than others. #MEMSPAchat
Action vs. reaction. Kids need to understand the roots of their feelings. Take a few minutes every morning to talk about feelings, what causes them, and how we often react to them. Offer alternative ways to express feelings and ask for help. Model this! A4 #MEMSPAchat
A4: MSU's TRAILS to Wellness program is developing a network of coaches across #Michigan who in turn can train teachers how to bring mindfulness and coping mechanisms into the classroom https://t.co/N2KE3h62Xb#memspachat
A4: Understand that the WORK with Ss affected by trauma or mental illness does NOT happen through discipline. It happens through relationship. #MEMSPAchat
A4:It takes a community to work together to solve these disorders. We have had PD on trauma-informed care so teachers are more aware of what students are going thought.Mindfulness mediation takes 3-5 of your time.Find videos on YouTube.Teacher everyone to just listen. #MEMSPAchat
Q4) Approximately 20% of school-aged kids are dealing with a mental, emotional or behavioral health disorder—but schools don't have enough counselors, psychologists or social workers. How do you help kids manage behavioral health challenges in the classroom? #MEMSPAchat
A3: GoNoodle...Pop See Ko is my jam; PE curriculums focused on growth and not ability, keep progressing; providing opportunities after school that aren't competitive, Girls on the Run/Heart and Sole, walking club, etc. Doesn't matter what, just keep moving! #memspachat
A4: TEAM!!! notice there is no “I” in it! You can’t possibly support these poor babies without a team of people who care! #memspachat#mortonschoolrocks#mortonchat

Q5) Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can be related to physical or emotional trauma and can severely impact a child's ability to learn. Do you know how to detect and respond when a child might be experiencing trauma? #MEMSPAchat
A4: Teachers are the key. You can’t help a kid if you don’t know who they are. So teachers need to make the effort to get to know every one and to show empathy. #MEMSPAchat
#MEMSPAchat Teachers and staff can do more. It is worth the time and effort for so many reasons. Compassion needs to be huge part of school climate/culture @Edimprove
A5: Have trusting relationships so Ss will share current trauma or abuse with us.
However, we do not need to know Ss life stories to support them.
Watch them, listen to them, they will tell us what they need. Be open to doing things a different way. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Just as academically we give students what they need, we need to do the same for our students behavioral/emotional needs. We partner with our @sscresa to support ALL our Ss. #MEMSPAchat
Q4) Approximately 20% of school-aged kids are dealing with a mental, emotional or behavioral health disorder—but schools don't have enough counselors, psychologists or social workers. How do you help kids manage behavioral health challenges in the classroom? #MEMSPAchat
A5: Hope to get training for my entire staff this summer. This isn't something that most of us have specific training on and it is so important. #MEMSPAchat
Q5) Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can be related to physical or emotional trauma and can severely impact a child's ability to learn. Do you know how to detect and respond when a child might be experiencing trauma? #MEMSPAchat

YES! We are a team and we are #bettertogether
Ain't no shame in asking for help. There is shame in doing things the same way we always have because we don't know any better.

Q6) School-based and community-based programs to address childhood nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral health might have some overlap in terms of goals, ideas, and resources. What kinds of collaborative programs have you seen work well? #MEMSPAchat
Thank you #memspa for leading with gusto! This is a crucial conversation statewide! Trauma informed instruction is key - first step is to know the signs! We are working on learning more about this #memspachat
Q5) Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can be related to physical or emotional trauma and can severely impact a child's ability to learn. Do you know how to detect and respond when a child might be experiencing trauma? #MEMSPAchat
A5: Behavior is a form of communication, and students suffering from childhood trauma are usually asking (through acting out) for help with easing their anxiety and gaining control of their lives. Respond w/ breaks, sensory inputs, structure, and an open mind. #MEMSPAchat
Q6) School-based and community-based programs to address childhood nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral health might have some overlap in terms of goals, ideas, and resources. What kinds of collaborative programs have you seen work well? #MEMSPAchat
A4: Like others have said, this is a struggle for us as well. One program we are getting set for next year is a therapy dog. Our School Success worker is leading this. I’m excited to see the possibilities! #MEMSPAchat
A5: you can detect it with the ACES and once you do get them the help they need, talking to the behavior specialist. What I can do is have compassion, listen, help them understand there feeling and help them with reframing. #MEMSPAchat
Q5) Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can be related to physical or emotional trauma and can severely impact a child's ability to learn. Do you know how to detect and respond when a child might be experiencing trauma? #MEMSPAchat
One - educate staff. Two - build relationships with kids. Three - follow your gut feeling. Schools can only do so much. The more partners we have the better our schools will be. A5 #MEMSPAchat
A5: You all sound like experts but here are some tips for those education professionals who might not have experience dealing with trauma: https://t.co/lH4049sRBQ#memspachat
A5 Staff are key to detecting trauma - and then providing a positive supportive environment for ss. Teachers and support staff are so good at spotting different behavior that might be an indicator of outside challenges. #memspachat

Q6) School-based and community-based programs to address childhood nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral health might have some overlap in terms of goals, ideas, and resources. What kinds of collaborative programs have you seen work well? #MEMSPAchat
A6: Here's a project we're really excited about: Public Health Delta Menominee is working to end the “patchwork” approach of groups bringing short-term grant funded projects into schools in the UP, cultivating long-term partnerships between agencies and schools. #MEMSPAchat
Excellent answer! It is absolutely their way of communicating that there is a need. I would add to your suggested responses to Q-TIP (Quit Taking It Personally) #MEMSPAchat
A5: Behavior is a form of communication, and students suffering from childhood trauma are usually asking (through acting out) for help with easing their anxiety and gaining control of their lives. Respond w/ breaks, sensory inputs, structure, and an open mind. #MEMSPAchat
In Clarkston, there are number of initiatives. The most recent one is free health clinics in two lower income elementaries and the middle school. They are open twice a week; parents submit initial paperwork and then just send a note when a child needs to be seen. A6. #MEMSPAchat
A6: They're working with the UM, MSU-extension, schools across the UP--and asset mapping all UP schools to identify existing obesity prevention/wellness activities and resources, analyzing gaps, and connecting schools with each other and resources to fill those gaps. #MEMSPAchat

A7: I'm interested in the ethics of church/school partnerships. Can anyone point me in the direction of any resources that would clarify the types of partnerships that are ethically permitted with churches? #MEMSPAchat
Q7: I believe it's so important for school people to be out in the community, asking for feedback, serving as volunteers, interacting with parents and offering a human connection. Great things can happen! #MEMSPAchat
A7: As funders we have a pretty specific answer in mind for this one: write joint grant applications! Whether bringing successful community models into schools or vice versa, show potential partners that a program is rooted in collaboration. #MEMSPAchat
A7: There are many different resources throughout the community that it is important to connect community resources with families. For example, a local church in our community offers free EL classes for families. #MEMSPAchat
A7: Today Berrien County started this collaboration I went to a PD called: Unveiling Invisible Injuries: Building a Trauma-Informed Court and Community. There were Medical, Education, and Legal/Court professionals. Very powerful. Possibilities are endless. #MEMSPAchat
