Hello & welcome our 1st of 2016! We're talking about New Year's Goals & focus. I'm looking forward to this discussion!
-
Please share who you are, where you're from & what you teach.
-
I'm Angela Rutschke from Caroline, Alberta. I proudly teach the 4 core subjects, as well as leadership & a class.
-
Bryan, 6th gr. ela from Ohio.
Great topic as we all energize for 2016.
-
-
We will be using the Q1, A1 format and our discussion will be archived after the chat.
-
Hi Bryan! I hope you had a wonderful break!
-
Question 1 is on its way in one minute!!!
-
It was great. Hope yours was as well.
-
-
I had a very relaxed break and loved every minute :) It was good to go back though!
-
wish I could stay up for this chat
-
-
Awww, we wish you could too! I'm sorry it's too late!
-
I would choose b/c when we are happy so is your heart and it resonates to everything. word
-
A1 Did this activity with kids yesterday. Got some great responses. For me I would say . Open to new possibilities, growing.
-
Welcome Tracy! I completely agree! Everything goes more smoothly when you are happy :)
-
A1 My guiding word is intentional
-
I love that you did this with your Ss! It is on my list for tomorrow :) I think that you've chosen a powerful word!
-
Question 2 is up in 60 seconds.
-
It was a positive way to set the tone for the new year. Displaying them out in the hallway to refer to rest of this yr.
-
Hi Carol, great to have you join us. Your word really speaks of living your life rather than purely reacting to it.
-
-
Did the Ss take it seriously? It sounds like a pretty fun activity! I can see great potential!
-
A2 I need to post them where we see them frequently, otherwise they tend to get forgotten and lost in the shuffle.
-
A2: I'm using 's book to guide Ss in goal-setting, we use blogging & reflection & lots of feedback too!
-
Great point Bryan! It's hard to hit a target you rarely see!
-
Most of them did. We talked about making it something they really want to strive for this yr.
-
A2 Setting goal with student during Individual conferencing and sending them off with an idea for practicing.
-
I do this a lot with writing. 6th graders all seem to have diff. issues with writing helps to individualize goals.
-
Our next question is on its way in one minute.
-
-
Such an immediate form of feedback that really resonates with many Ss, it builds great relationships too :)
-
Oops, it's Question 3:P My typing is rough tonight!
-
A3: SMART goals really help, as does Responsibility Partners & class goals w reflection. Class meetings are also effective.
-
A3 Need to be measurable to begin with. Revisit them throughout the year, revise if needed.
-
I agree! Writing skills can be ALL over the map!
-
A3 Students know that at the next conf. we will check progress on goal and continue practice or set new goal.
-
I also think that Ss REALLY have to be invested and passionate about what they choose.
-
Yes, it has to be something they see as having meaning to them. Otherwise it's just another assignment.
-
I find it challenging to conference with ALL my Ss during their writing, but it sure makes a difference!
-
We're already at the half-way point! Question 4 is just 60 seconds away!
-
-
A4: I believe it is VERY important as Ss need to be part of the process to buy-in & really have a vested interest.
-
A4 Kids should be the main player. A teacher setting goals isn't going to necessarily create buy in with the students.
-
A4 metacognition of learning needs is a powerful reading strategy.
-
I don't remember being part of the process as a S, but I'm so glad times have changed!
-
-
-
-
A5: We change things up! Class arrangement, new Responsibility Partners & Class Jobs & Ss ideas for improvement are implemented
-
Can u explain this a bit. I'm intrigued.
-
I love ! Her thoughts on reading have changed so much of what I do!
-
A5 We will hold a class mtg. this wk where we celebrate successes and come up with solutions to issues that are occuring.
-
Celebration is VERY engergizing! I'm sure the Ss love this!
-
Question 6 in 60 seconds!
-
-
A6 I've always been a goal setter so yes, New Years is a good time for me to refocus and start fresh.
-
I always make goals at New Year's and my birthday...they both feel like great reset spots :)
-
A6: I do make resolutions. They represent growth, willingness to change & hopefulness to me. I can affect what my life through them.
-
Most years I do. Jan. is a fresh start in the 'dark' of winter.
-
Question 7 is right on deck, I'm excited to hear your thoughts!
-
It's kind of nice to have that clean slate :)
-
-
I also got to see her recently. She IS motivational &speaks from practical experience & expertise.
-
A7 Ideas from 5thchat such as Tagxedo and Literary Art to hold comprehension.
-
A7: I am planning to use for one unit in science this year.
-
A7 Going to have kids help in lesson planning stage. Been focusing on giving kids voice. Want to see what they come up with.
-
Final question coming up already!
-
Great plan Carol! I'm sure your students will love them both!
-
-
That is such a cool idea! My Ss are working on math tutorial videos to help teach other Ss about concepts.
-
A8: My advice is to truly plan goals out, make them matter, reflect & tweak often & have someone to be accountable to.
-
A8 Goal setting has a high effect size. Go for it!
-
A8 I like the idea of accountability partners.
