Welcome friends! Mary arriving at the hotel in Rochester NY right under the #G2Great wire. Sohappy to be here w/Fran Jenn & Amy are so thrilled to have Kristi & Christine back with us to talk @ their remarkable new book! @MrazKristine@christine_hertz@HeinemannPub
Before we start can I just say if @DrMaryHoward doesn't write a book of rants I will be publishing them all in a book called, "Learning with my Friend Mary" #g2great
It’s amazing how just sitting at the computer with friends turns a dreary (soon to be snow riddled) hotel into a bright warm and sunny place. I love our #G2Great friends!

A1: A kids first classroom means students strengths, needs, curiosities and learning styles lead the learning with a responsive teacher ready to support and facilitate. #g2great
A1: Kids First is the heart of setting up the environment & instruction so that Ss are as independent as possible. T is guide. S are problem solvers & explorers. (No T desk- all "ours")
#g2great
A1 It means letting go of our "other agenda" so we can put kids at the center of all we do. They ARE the agenda so we ALWAYS keep on sights on them. #G2Great
A1: Kids first means re-centering our decisions around CHILDREN. Standards, curriculum and adults and all of the other elements of school are still vital, but children lead the way. #g2great
A1 We must get to know our kids. It is important to remember it is THEIR classroom rather than our classroom. Starting on day 1, I ask them to devise and share their a common mission statement and establish group norms for an engaging and empowering learning environment. #G2Great
A1: It is about putting your practice where your mouth is. We can say kids first all we want but if we keep doing crazy things that are not kids first... well... It starts with actions. What are you doing? #g2great
A1: It means that honouring children is at the heart of everything we do: how we teach, how we speak, how we design our spaces, how we speak about them when they’re not present. #g2great
Hi! I’m Erin, a 2nd grade teacher in Atlanta! (Isn’t 8:30 a little late for a teacher Twitter chat? It is past this tired teacher’s bedtime, but this seemed important to stay awake for!) #G2Great
A1 A kids first classroom means that we have to give students what they need, when they need it. You have to develop deeply personal relationships with your students so that you can give them what they need. #g2great
Before we start can I just say if @DrMaryHoward doesn't write a book of rants I will be publishing them all in a book called, "Learning with my Friend Mary" #g2great
A1. I think designing spaces for children is an important foundation - kid-friendly furniture, spaces, materials - windows! It's hard to spend a whole day in a room....#G2Great#LitBankStreet
A1: I am on year 2 of flexible seating. I love that my classroom has become another tool for kids to use to develop independence and learn more about themselves. #G2great
A1 "Kids first" means celebrating the kids we HAVE not the kids we wish we had or that might simplify our teaching. We embrace our responsibility to each & every one! #G2Great
A1 "Empathy" can seem like a buzzword, but I love how K&C have written practical steps for how to try to be more empathetic -- really try to imagine the problem/situation/excitement from the students' perspectives, respond without judgement but with understanding. #g2great
It’s amazing how just sitting at the computer with friends turns a dreary (soon to be snow riddled) hotel into a bright warm and sunny place. I love our #G2Great friends!
A1: We don’t ask ourselves, “what impact could I have on this child’s first/third/fifth grade year?” but instead, “what impact could I have on this child’s life?” This helps us always be guiding our students (and our teaching) towards agency and authenticity. #G2great
#g2great Hi Mary- so great to hear from you!!! I loved what you said about in the snow this chat warms you. No matter what my mood at the start of this chat, it’s always even better at the end! ❤️👍🏻😘
A1: I use an old stand by from Harry Wong. Greet kids at the door from day one with a welcoming smile, handshake, and introduce myself as Andy. We are learners first learning together. I include myself in the process. We learn from each other. #G2great
A1 It means getting to know your kids before worry about what needs to be covered. Letting them know you’re here for them #g2great That you’re in it together
A1- One thing we do in our class is to start everyday by coming together in a circle and greeting one another- there is something very powerful about another human being looking at you in the eye and saying your name. #g2great
#G2great A1 We first take care of ourselves so that we can bring our best to Ss and from the first to the last day they stay in the forefront of every decision we make, we advocate for their needs, for time, for choice, and space that honors their voice
A1 - #kidsfirst means listening to teach a la @sambennett2 and like @KatieWoodRay says our lesson plans "have huge spaces in them that [we're] waiting for you to fill with your thinking." #g2great
A1: Kids first means making student centered decisions at the individual, classroom, building, and district level. Getting to know Ss social, emotional needs first, is the key to accessing deep learning. #g2great
A1: I think a “Kid First” classroom sets ss up to be the leaders of their learning with ts as facilitators. Teaching humans, not subjects and giving tons of opportunities for their voice to be heard. #g2great
A1 Letting go of teacher ego, need for everything to be perfect (ahem...this is so very hard for me) and make decisions based on what will be better for the kids, rather than only thinking what is better for us. #G2great
We talk about how it's both the book we wish we had AND the book that shares our journey over years and years of teaching. Something for everyone, hopefully. #G2great
A1 The first way to achieve it is to get rid of one-size-fits-all programs, packages scripts, tools, and whatever else has little to do with child-centered teaching. #G2Great
A1 Kids First mean my Ss are the core of my planning. I meet them where they are and go from there. I make sure they each feel like they are the most important one in the room. #G2great
Agree! Building empathy within ourselves, and the kids in our class. It’s much more than a buzzword if it opens up hearts and minds to a child’s reality. #g2great
I totally agree. I wish I had it, but I'm learning so much from it right now, many years into my career in education, as someone who reads professionally and attends many educational conferences. It won't go over anyone's head, but it's also deep if you're ready for it. #g2great
A2: Putting ourselves in the perspective of our learners is so important. What is the narrative of our classroom saying? What does our learning space convey? How are their voices heard? What can they control and influence in the classroom? Do they belong? #g2great
A2: Habits: Persisting
Listening to Others with Understanding and Empathy
Thinking Flexibly.
Thinking About Our Metacognitive
Striving for Accuracy and Precision.
Questioning and Posing Problems
Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations
#G2Great
A1 Remembering that the kids are why we are there and teaching the whole child. Recognizing that every class has different needs and what worked last year might not work this year. Doing what Ss need, not what's easiest. #G2great
#g2great Hi Mary- so great to hear from you!!! I loved what you said about in the snow this chat warms you. No matter what my mood at the start of this chat, it’s always even better at the end! ❤️👍🏻😘
A1 Kids 1st = Starting with an asset mindset. Every kid brings their best to us and we need to actively, intentionally identify their assets. They also have ways of knowing and learning from their home environment and we need to "research" in order to really know them #g2great
A1: We do what is BEST for kids. We love them, we foster creativity, and we allow them to express themselves freely! We teach standards, yes, but we also teach students to be role-model citizens in society! A "kids first" classroom supports student VOICE and CHOICE! #g2great
A1 Letting go of teacher ego, need for everything to be perfect (ahem...this is so very hard for me) and make decisions based on what will be better for the kids, rather than only thinking what is better for us. #G2great
A2 We can't have positive spaces unless we match them with positive mindsets. We maintain unwavering belief that ALL kids WILL succeed & keep it in our sights! #G2Great
#g2great@colleen_cruz is our staff developer and I am learning about Makerspace from her and how to love the magical, marvelous “mess” of makerspace and to let go. It is hard but very freeing!
A1: Kids first mean you get to know your Ss---who they are, their likes, strengths, needs,.... Today one student said that they like coming to my room because I respect them. They always come first. #kidsfirst#g2great
A1: For my kids, social/emotional learning! We use I-messages (I felt __ when you __. Next time, I wish you would __.), and really have the kids talk to and listen to each other. Probably not the typical “kids first” classroom, but it’s what they need! #g2great
A1 That empathetic stance puts Ts in a position to extend grace without judgement to every child. Entering into the sheer joy that most kids come to school with is THE best way to start a beginning of the year learning community that has staying power. #g2great
A1: Kids are first in my classroom because they are the driving force behind it. Their interests, ideas, and the thinking are at the heart of it all. 💗 #g2great
A2: I work every day on cultivating my empathy as a teacher. To really feel what it feels like to be a certain age. The excitement of a lost tooth, the pure joy of imaginary play, the impatience of too much time on structured tasks. #g2great
Kids first means making every child feel important. Teaching kids Growth Mindset is one thing, but putting kids first means YOU as a teacher need to have one too. #G2great
A2: I work every day on cultivating my empathy as a teacher. To really feel what it feels like to be a certain age. The excitement of a lost tooth, the pure joy of imaginary play, the impatience of too much time on structured tasks. #g2great
A2: Teachers must have an open ❤️ and an open mind! Teachers must truly BELIEVE all students can learn and expect to build upon each strength of the students! Finally, teachers must allow students to have choice and express themselves freely without fear of judgment #g2great
a2 #g2great Flexibility!! #kidsfirst means letting go of the some things we like to control, letting kid ideas drive curriculum, changing plans to be responsive. always know where we want to get to, but remembering there are many ways to get there
A2 We have to really show our students that we love them for who they are- not who they someday will become. We have to let them feel and believe that we believe they are capable of learning #g2great
A2 Definitely flexibility of purpose. We must let go of the notion that everything must be planned to perfection & open a door to spontaneity kids bring to the table #G2Great
A1. I think the biggest lightbulb moment I've had as a teacher & a coach is: "It's not about me." I need to really see, really hear, & authentically respond to each student. The classroom is a WE place - not a ME place. #g2great
A2- Making effort not to project my own preferences and experiences onto my learners- showing empathy and understanding for what THEY may want, feel, need and experience. And, joy always joy. #G2great
A2 I think a habit of mind for teachers to develop is to look for what is right with student work more than what is wrong. Celebrate what they can do and support them with what they can’t. #g2great
A2: I love the idea of a room built around wonder and curiosity and celebrating it from the rooftops. I think it needs to be done from the earliest grades and continued. In JH the curiosity is already crushed in many. It takes a lot of glue to put it back together. #g2great
A2 Sitting and talking with the kids. I do it, but need to search out those children who don’t seek that from me. Those quiet ones need that time and space from us. #g2great
A2- Questioning- especially of ourselves- I am still working on it- but I found when I started asking myself 'Why this learning for this child at this time?' my practice really started to shift #g2great
A2: I think Ts need to think like the Ss they are trying to helpmor Teach. What we see as adults is nothing like what a child of today sees. We must put our shoes on the other foot to plan, teach, reach and love. #G2Great
A2 We need to do whatever we can to make Ss feel safe, listened to, and encouraged to develop a growth mindset. We must model the power of YET whenever possible. An adult admitting they don't know it all/can't do it all, is powerful. #g2great
A2: An authenticity / inquiry stance create habits of mind that value process over product & learning alongside. Ss exceed our expectations when we ask questions instead of provide answers. Oh, and their work looks like kids made it because...(drum roll) kids made it. #g2great
In many publications this year, I’ve noticed a trend: folks are pushing back on programs, scripted lessons, and prescribed curricula. Teachers are yearning to reimagine their teaching with students AS the curriculum—not recipients of a sterile, stagnant curriculum. #g2great
A2: To be in the mindset of the observer and a researcher. There is so much power in observation and documenting the learning that happens right in front of our eyes. I need help with this! Especially, documentation. #g2great
A2 Empathy above all. For some of our children we ARE the only safe space. Never forget that you may be the harbor in the storm of their lives. #G2Great
We cannot keep ourselves on the perimeters of their learning experiences and think that we’re going to have the kind of impact we want to have. We have to see the learning process from their eyes - and very wise eyes they are!! #g2great
A2: Putting ourselves in the perspective of our learners is so important. What is the narrative of our classroom saying? What does our learning space convey? How are their voices heard? What can they control and influence in the classroom? Do they belong? #g2great
A1 A “Kids First” classroom is one where I work w/in the constraints of my system to push against it w/ what is best for Ss. It looks like Ss guiding our learnings, making them the experts in the room #G2Great
Thank you, Tracey! This is so important. We must remember that our kids have stories and experiences both in and out of school that shape them and influence them. Somedays there is much more going on that distracts kids from lessons and learning. #G2Great
I completely agree. We have to build students up, help them acknowledge their strengths and use those strengths to eventually develop their weaknesses. #G2great
It is so true that kids notice the things about us that we don't explicitly point out. Sometimes they copy mannerisms, phrases, etc. Until one day, "Woah. Do I really say that?"....They are always watching! #g2great
A3: Materials and resources are in S reach & eyesight. Labels made by Ss. Ss help decide when / where routines are /are not working. S names/schedules appropriate size. Pictures at beginning of year w/ words.
#G2Great
A2: It is absolutely essential to cultivate a mindset that focuses on solutions instead of complaints, S strengths instead of deficits, productive effort instead of passivity. #g2great
A3: You know that cheesy line from the lion king? “Everything the light touches is our kingdom.” I apply that to my classroom- I want my students to know that anything they can touch or see is theirs. #g2great
A2: Curiosity and wonder. I try to remember that kids are naturally eager to learn about their world and the people in it. I can wonder right along with them #g2great
a3: A classroom library that is organized by kids. I only did this for the first time when NYC school has asbestos issues and we had to start a few days late. It was life changing #g2great
A3: One pet peeve of mine is walking into beautiful classrooms that are beautiful to the teacher and perfectly made. For me, the best classrooms start out bare and then our built together with students. #g2great
A3 Kid centered physical environments should include their design thumbprint. Let the create they NEED - not the room we want or need. Make it about THEM! #G2Great
A3: I am in JH but I have Rockers, Stools High and low chairs and high and regular tables. It is pretty great that kids rush into the room. I say it is for me but it might be the chairs...#g2great
A2: I work every day on cultivating my empathy as a teacher. To really feel what it feels like to be a certain age. The excitement of a lost tooth, the pure joy of imaginary play, the impatience of too much time on structured tasks. #g2great
I think we all struggle to do that but we have to trust our instincts and know that that may point us in the right direction, even if we aren’t sure in that moment. #g2great
A2: empathy, empathy and more empathy. Being self-reflective and mindful of what it means to work and learn as a 7 or 8 year old. What my Ss can accomplish is truly mind blowing when I regroup and consider they are in their 2nd full year of school. #G2Great
A3: The room will not be neat and tidy every minute of every day. We can tell that kids live, work, and play in this space designed with their needs in mind!
#G2great
#g2great The more I become a part of their young hearts, the more I benefit too. How lucky we are as educators to be so close to life’s beginnings with these little ones. @christine_hertz
A2: I work every day on cultivating my empathy as a teacher. To really feel what it feels like to be a certain age. The excitement of a lost tooth, the pure joy of imaginary play, the impatience of too much time on structured tasks. #g2great
I hope they r beginning to realize that programs are not meeting the needs & identities of our students. #g2great Teachers need to make the decisions of what is best for their students not the publishers/politicians/school boards. Glad to hear of this trend.
A3: The room, the materials, everything... it's for them-not me. It's accessible and the classroom environment supports independence. My room can be messy, but learning is supposed to be messy, right? #G2great
A3: I love plants for their aesthetic value, but my students always took on care and maintenance. And every class left at least one new plant behind (a cutting, an avocado grown from a pit!!) for the next. It turned into a sweet tradition. #g2great
Yes! Student-organized, student-labeled libraries can be so powerful. Kids decide the categories based on their interests and those of their peers. They point out the "holes" to help you figure out what to order. They know where to find what they want. #g2great
a3: A classroom library that is organized by kids. I only did this for the first time when NYC school has asbestos issues and we had to start a few days late. It was life changing #g2great
A3: I was in a classroom last week where the teacher had Ss submit designs for the classroom set-up and THE STUDENTS created the learning space. How brilliant is that?!!! #g2great
A3: a peace corner. Some Ts don’t like this, but when a kiddo is upset or crying, and too worked up to talk or work, they want a space to calm down and reset, without others looking at them. So, we created a peace corner from #traumasensativeskills made by Ss. #G2Great

A2 We can start by being learners ourselves. When we make our own wonderings, curiosities, challenges visible, Ss know this is what we value and are more willing to take risks. #g2great
A2: Ts need to embody vulnerability. We aren’t the only experts in the room & we too have learning to do. Ts need to honor that Ss have a voice, at every age #g2great
A3: I was in a classroom last week where the teacher had Ss submit designs for the classroom set-up and THE STUDENTS created the learning space. How brilliant is that?!!! #g2great
A3 I support a 7th grade teacher implementing the UTL writing units. The students chose to write opinion pieces on why they needed a classroom library, voted on the 3 best pieces, presented them to the principal, and they chose the book titles! #G2Great
Yes! We've scrapped social studies and science curriculums and are writing our own relating to our community and it's relation to the greater world. #G2great
A3 since I’m not in my own classroom, can say what I like to see is a “messy” room where kids and teachers know where everything belongs and they’re perfectly fine with it #g2great They proudly show me their work. That’s what matters to them.
I took a leap of faith Wednesday with one of my sections implementing Grand Conversations. IT. WENT. GREAT! today had the same section and they couldn't wait to practice again!!Building community one day at a time! 🧡 #g2great
Reteaching instead of punishing! Just as we reteach when a student doesn’t understand a math/reading concept, we need to reteach behavior expectations! We need to set them up for a lifetime of being a contributing, productive, empathetic, & compassionate citizen. #pbis#g2great
Jumping in for a moment to state how PHENOMENAL this message is right here! Four of my Ss this week had been making treasure maps in search of Pikachu outside on the playground. They were joy-filled in talking about their search. The joys of Kindergarten! #G2great
A2: I work every day on cultivating my empathy as a teacher. To really feel what it feels like to be a certain age. The excitement of a lost tooth, the pure joy of imaginary play, the impatience of too much time on structured tasks. #g2great
#g2great I think that we hope and instinctively have our hearts pointing in the right direction means that we are waking the right path. In life all we have is ultimately to trust our instincts and goodness. And children are so close to that beginning of life.
A3: As a lit interven. the kids first classroom is a room where readers can organize & redesign their library of books. My job is to share the books, guide you in discovering how they work, expose you to gems. Now you get in that library & have at it! #G2great

A3 I love the idea that a classroom is a studio where work and play are synonymous (even for older students), Ts can create clearly defined areas, but kids should have input in the ways work/play can happen in those spaces. #g2great
A3 Lucy Calkins once said 80% of our wall space should be KIDS. So why do we fill our walls w/teacher/marketing STUFF they couldn’t care less about. Let your walls be a reflective mirror of your children. #G2Great
A3: kids having input into the design, books, layout of the room. The teacher can not and should not make all the calls in regards to the feel of the classroom. #g2great
A3: I allow ss to help design the layout of our tables and “comfy seats”. The voice who likes a table of 4, 2, by the window, on the floor and at the standing table are all heard. Creating wall space for their learning and thinking also fosters a Kids First envir. #g2great
#g2great OMG.. I got so caught up in writing my Slice of Life Story Challenge post that I lost track of time! Mindi from the Chicago suburbs, joining late!
A3 Lucy Calkins once said 80% of our wall space should be KIDS. So why do we fill our walls w/teacher/marketing STUFF they couldn’t care less about. Let your walls be a reflective mirror of your children. #G2Great
Hello all! Greg- K, MD. Just checking in for a moment to say hello to all of the EDU-leaders in #g2great tonight! Hope all are well. Have a great rest of your week on purpose! Inspire and be inspired by #FutureLeaders daily!
A3 I think all teachers should wait to design their classrooms until after their students arrive. Then you can have each class put a little bit of themselves into the room. It is THEIR room #G2great
A3 I love the idea that a classroom is a studio where work and play are synonymous (even for older students), Ts can create clearly defined areas, but kids should have input in the ways work/play can happen in those spaces. #g2great
A3 If we truly believe that the classroom is our students' classroom, then they must be part of the decision making process. My students would decide where to sit for workshop, who to sit with, how to organize materials and books, what goes on the walls, etc. #g2great
A3 Lucy Calkins once said 80% of our wall space should be KIDS. So why do we fill our walls w/teacher/marketing STUFF they couldn’t care less about. Let your walls be a reflective mirror of your children. #G2Great
A3 This is my first year without a teacher desk. It was taking up so much valuable real estate! I can't say things are perfect YET, but I'm getting there. I'm more accepting of appreciating what makes them comfortable -- standing, kneeling, tummy time, etc... #g2great
A4: I teach teachers and unfortunately, many rooms are still arranged in the old lecture style. My wish list? Teaching preservice teachers and graduate students in actual classrooms to model best practices. #g2great
A4: Don't have own classroom.
Prefer no desks for littles. Tables, variety of chairs. S work everywhere. Daily schedule displayed. No fancy-shmantzy chevron bulletin board displays!
#g2great
A2. Thinking Flexibly is such an important Habit of Mind to both model for & teach to kids. It feeds T sanity & enhances instructional effectiveness, making for a more responsive classroom experience. #g2great
A3: Have to admit this is something I need to work on! One thing is we’ve started a word collection, where students write interesting words they’ve read on a strip of paper and tape it up anywhere they want in the room! (Inspired by @peterhreynolds’ new book!) #g2great
I’ve seen some rooms where the kids go to their “talking table” or some rooms have a sitting place to get their wiggles out but be part of the group till they’re ready to join the group. What works for your class is what works best #g2great

A4 Abandoning a Ts desk would be my first order of business. There's not a single reason on earth Ts should EVER be in the desk if kids are in the room. #G2Great
A3: Simple: Kids can actually USE and manipulate things in the room! The room is KID centered! The students take OWNERSHIP in things they HELP create! #g2great
A3: I know I struggle with this and am so inspired by what I see here. This is an extension of @drgravityg 's anti-"outsourcing" message. We don't need more "stuff," more posters, more borders.... They need to see more of who they are reflected in THEIR space! #G2great
A3 This is an oldie but one of my faves. Several years back, I began inviting students to create all of our classroom resources. If we want them to use them, then they should create them. #KidsFirst#g2great
a4: I knew what I wanted the classroom to feel like, but didn’t know specifically how to arrange it. Enter my teacher friend down the hall who could do this classroom arrangement better than I could. #g2great
To me, it's more about allowing students the opportunities to discover how they learn/work best - if we're constantly dictating where/with whom to work- we are doing nothing to promote independent work habits #g2great
Yes! And I love nothing better than ditching my plans and skipping down the wonder path with them! @Wonderopolis often supports us with that work. #G2great
A4- More than rom arrangement Ts allowing Kids to take control and drive conversations. You could be in a box and have a wonderful classroom #TeacherMatters#g2great

A3: First year in kinder, putting in a play kitchen felt strange & I doubted they would play there. WRONG! It is the FIRST station chosen each & every time #LetThemPlay#g2great
A3: The room belongs to them. It should be created by them from day one. I love how the first day it is a blank slate ready to be created. One of my first classes after returning from Reggio created our alphabet after a long term investigation on photography. #g2great
A3 Classroom libraries can be designed by children. They can create the types of baskets. My kids always came up with the most creative titles! #G2great
#g2great A4: I would have my bulletin boards down where kids could reach them. Because of electrical conduit, my boards are all REALLY high. I’d also like more flexible furniture (hopefully next year for this!)
A4 I'm personally not a fan of desks & don't find them conducive to learning but I think variety is key. Some kids may prefer it & it's about THEM! #G2Great
A4: Would LOVE to create a comfortable writing retreat with rugs, stations, built in bookcases, dimmed lighting, etc. Think digital coffee shop style learning environment where the art is work of current students. #G2great
A4:right now I’d like to decommission my smartboard. I do so little while group teaching, it takes up way too much valuable space that could be used for more anchor charts, student work, etc. #G2Great
A3: I have a bulletin board for book recommendations. Each student has an envelope and all are welcome to leave a note describing a book that person would like! #G2Great
4: I wish we would let go of the everyone at a table/desk at the same time vision of school. There should be as much space for blocks and movement as for tables and you use what you need when you need it #G2great
A4 #g2great I constantly rethink wall-space. I don't think some charts need to live on the walls. I find charts that actually get used are interactive, kid-made, at (their) eye-level..what's meaningful to THEM
A4: I wish I had more freedom in arranging my room. I'd love to have the meeting area close to windows and natural light...but I can't move the boards and promethean..Some things have to stay where they are mounted. #G2great
A4 Unfortunately, some of our classrooms are heavily influenced by the placement of our tech drops/projectors. It has been hard sometimes to put our gathering area in the place that’s best suited. #G2great
A2. My favorite HOM focus is Finding Humor. It's so important for me to take myself less seriously, while simultaneously taking people & tasks very seriously. My Ss & I talk about that balance often. LAUGH, smile & breathe. Levity, humility, authenticity #g2great
A3: We've loved our training with @ScienceToolkit on Interactive Science Word Walls, our Ts have taken off with them. Kids love having their creations displayed #g2great
I am so excited to start this next year, Stephanie. We are going to partner with a local elementary school where I will teach my classes and my students will also conduct field work. I'm plan to do some demo lessons in the teachers classes to model. Would love any ideas! #G2Great
Can I just say that my heart is so happy at this very moment even though I’m LITERALLY watching brilliance flash in warp speed across my vision field. BIG WOW! #g2great
A4:right now I’d like to decommission my smartboard. I do so little while group teaching, it takes up way too much valuable space that could be used for more anchor charts, student work, etc. #G2Great
A3 This is something I need to work on. However we do have loads of kid art that is gorgeous. And, now that I am doing makerspace, one whole side of my room has recyclables that make Sarah Synthia Silvia Stout look good! #G2Great
A4 There is no one-size-fits-all room design any more than there's a one-size-fits-all instructional design. Whatever we do must be a good fit for kids. #G2Great
#g2great For 18 years I taught in the “Garden Level” of our junior high. Our view was of bushes, since we were below grade. Now I’m on the second floor and have a wall of windows. It’s glorious. I also still have a desk. I work there before and after school. I need my space.
A4: I have never been a fan of store bought classroom charts/decorations! What is their purpose? Charts should be meaningful to Ss! They are a tool used to elevate learning! #g2great
A4: I want an entire wall of Window. I crave the sun. Otherwise maybe walls of shelves so everything can be front facing for a library...but I would need complete wall coverage. Seating wise the kids are happy and I love NO COUCHES #g2great#booksandsun
#g2great I let go of that last school year. The only time my kids are all at their desks is during PARCC testing. Otherwise they are spread throughout the room with clipboards, scoop rockers, etc. They love it, and so do I.
Thanks Megan- I first read it in Ontario's Kindergarten document and it stuck with me- it really forces me to think about the individual learner #g2great
A5 Caring. Love. Safety. Heart. Joy. These are qualities that must permeate the very air we breathe. This puts kids 1st because it celebrates who they are. #G2Great
A4: I wish we had flexible seating! My kiddos need wobble chairs! The kids’ desks drive me crazy—always messy & crooked. I would prefer tables (but I guess the whole point of this chat is that it ISN’T about what I prefer, right?)! #g2great
Q5: Bring in the LIGHT! Love bright classrooms. Get rid of carpet and add in concrete floors. Easy clean up for all that "evidence of learning" #g2great
A4: For me I am challenged b/c my school is very old (circa 1930s) and the footprint of these classrooms supports rows of desks, not a 21st century classroom. I have tables, which is the best option in my tight space. #g2great
A5: An understanding of the developing brain. Dr. Dan Siegel has a phenomenal book called "the whole brain child." The more I learn and think about the brain, the more I can respond in an helpful way when social or emotional issues arise. https://t.co/3JO9CI2DEA#g2great
A4: i received a grant in December to change my room to tables and space so my kids have more room to work with each other. I can’t wait to get rid of the desks. #G2Great
A4 No classroom now but tables over desks and if desks not in rows but in pods.kids work on walls. Flexibility in seating on floor or rug what they need at time. #g2great Look at your group and go from there
Erica I saw that you are Future Educator 2020. You are inspiring me so much by being here. Friends everyone welcome Erica to the education world. Let’s give her our support by following her ❤️ #g2great@franmcveigh@brennanamy@hayhurst3
A4 There is no one-size-fits-all room design any more than there's a one-size-fits-all instructional design. Whatever we do must be a good fit for kids. #G2Great
A5: When I was an elementary teacher I used TRIBES LEARNING COMMUNITIES I loved it but as the kids got older they seemed less into it. I use picture books as my main source now to address things. I want to write a book about my journey with picture books in JH #g2great
A5: I don't have a picture of it, but my kids and I made a chart "How to be a friend at recess" and we tied it to Growth Mindset. They made illustrations to go with each step. #G2great
Love this! We had kids create book recommendations with different digital tools and post QR codes on the hallway bulletin boards so others could scan and listen to (and view) the book talks (trailers). #G2Greathttps://t.co/t0x7qaAz1m
5: we talk about emotional environment being kids first when we approach as something we are all learning- no shame, no rewards, something we are all getting more skilled at #G2great
A5: We must model the social emotional learning piece! I love to have students model for other students! One of my favorite books to use is "Each Kindness" by @JackieWoodson#G2Great
A4: i received a grant in December to change my room to tables and space so my kids have more room to work with each other. I can’t wait to get rid of the desks. #G2Great
Oh yes @RuthLongobardi lots of choice, always. Think about where you like to work and try to make that possible in your classroom. #g2Great#LitBankStreet
A5: I took a growth mindset tip from Quantum Learning and have my students recite a positive, uplifting phrase at the beginning of our group time #G2Great
A5 I'm so in love with Peter Reynolds, Happy Dreamer. I've seen it inspire so many amazing discussions about our very special dreamers. @peterhreynolds#G2Great
A4: Most of the furniture in my rm is soft seating, coffee tables etc.I fell in ❤️with a school that I visited last yr that had an old farm table in the center of their room.I’d like to find a smaller version for my atelier. Love the level of collaboration it creates. #g2great
A4 Book organization and display. haven't quite got this figured out yet. It's a work in progress. Abandoned leveled tubs, but not loving where I'm at...yet! #G2great
A5- We read 'The Fantastic Elastic Brain' the first week of school and we make 'brain slime' - the students stretch it as we talk about how making mistakes grow our brains- now they congratulate each other- 'You grew your brain today!!' #g2great
Karen there’s a link to an article in the tweet but you can also read about it in our book. Yes, shameless plug! Hahaha! I’m happy to chat further about it! #G2Great
Never thought I would say this, but I have only used mine this year as a projector. One person interacting at a time is not effective for the class. Hoping for 1:1 iPads next year and a SmartTV #g2great
A5 Each Kindness On The Other Side both by Jacqueline Woodson. So many to set the tone of what I’d want in the classroom. I walk around with some of my favorites to read when I sub. They touch my heart and want it for the kids. See many mentioned here #g2great
A5: I’ve used The Empty Pot to teach resilience. Boy Who Harnessed the Wind to discuss initiative and innovation. Wilma Unlimited to explore perseverance. #G2great
A5: I'm in a 2-year old building, two stories, two science labs, large flex spaces in pods for students to create, library/art/science patios... the difference in learning what happens because of the building we have is amazing! #g2great@VLKArchitects
A6: Managing - T in charge.
Community = Equals in the room.
Our room. Our rules. Our problem-solving.
Empowering Ss to manage their own behavior.
#G2Great

A5 I know some people don't like Conscious Discipline, but I love some of the components that are heavy on community building. Every person matters and they matter a whole lot. #g2great
A5: Student-centered & student-led discussion. Listening to their thoughts, ideas, problems, etc. Sometimes, it’s hard when there’s SO MUCH to cover, but it’s important to let them share & listen to each other. Teaching/learning how to apologize & talk through conflict. #g2great
A4: Most of the furniture in my rm is soft seating, coffee tables etc.I fell in ❤️with a school that I visited last yr that had an old farm table in the center of their room.I’d like to find a smaller version for my atelier. Love the level of collaboration it creates. #g2great
A6 Managing a classroom values rules and personal agenda/preferences above kids. Community values kids as the heart and soul of our learning setting. #G2Great
#g2great Just shared a picture book today about what it means to be present. We tell children to focus, be present, listen...but what does that truly mean? look like? how does it happen?
There could not be a better statement, ever. School should feel as comfortable as home. It's like when your students call you "mom" or "dad", Biggest. Compliment. Ever. #g2Great#LitBankStreet
A6: Community building means developing a sense of belonging among all of the students. It means celebrating, establishing traditions, learning, growing and taking responsibility when you mess up. #g2great
#g2great A6: The word community implies that each person is equally important and valued. We work to lift each other up! Management implies one person is large and in charge. My room became a happier place when I shifted my mindset and turned it over to the kids.
A6: 'Managing' implies one person in control making the decisions; a community is where everyone has a stake - everyone is essential to the well-being of the whole (we have a special cheer we only do when everyone is present) #g2great
A4 Book organization and display. haven't quite got this figured out yet. It's a work in progress. Abandoned leveled tubs, but not loving where I'm at...yet! #G2great
A5: Be PRESENT for each students...and caring. Check-in with kids personally. Allow for flexibility and choice with a dose of support and scaffolding. #G2Great
A6: Management (from a kid’s perspective) means learning the rules of a specific classroom and learning how to do that version of school. Community building means developing lifelong skills that we ALL need and use. #g2great
A6: Just the wording Building vs Managing. Building we are making something, hopefully great. Managing we are just organizing what we inherit. There is no joy in that. Build joy, build connections. #g2great
I think you'll love it! We have a sound effect to go with our synapses firing- so I can say "Whoah- what did I just hear?? Somebody's brain growing??" They love it - now they ask me "Did you hear that Ms. Henry??" #g2great
A4 Book organization and display. haven't quite got this figured out yet. It's a work in progress. Abandoned leveled tubs, but not loving where I'm at...yet! #G2great
A5 - I use Jon Muth's The Three Questions with teachers to remind them to be present of the most important time, act, and person. Especially important once testing schedule comes off the press (#unfortunatetruth) #g2great
#g2great A6 I wrote a blog post recently about building community of #kidsfirst by believing kids are capable, and shifting those beliefs into actions. Kids share power..it's our space, and we respect each other
https://t.co/dhxUR3531z
For a classroom or a school to be successful, they must be a community first. Without that "feel" everyone will not be accepted for who they are. Everyone is able to contribute to a community of learners. #g2great

A6 Managing a classroom values rules and personal agenda/preferences above kids. Community values kids as the heart and soul of our learning setting. #G2Great
A5: I love using Mean Jean the Recess Queen. Such a great theme of acceptance and conflict resolution without even having an adult get involved. #G2Great
A6 Building a community means putting students at the center of everything and teaching them how to value, communicate and respect one another. Managing a class is more about compliance #g2great
What a good noticing, @btkissel Let's support a reimagining and support of what is best in teaching. We need to support what we know is important and best for learning. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
In many publications this year, I’ve noticed a trend: folks are pushing back on programs, scripted lessons, and prescribed curricula. Teachers are yearning to reimagine their teaching with students AS the curriculum—not recipients of a sterile, stagnant curriculum. #g2great
A6: Community can’t happen in a classroom built around competition. Kids can’t think someone must lose in order for them to win. Learning is for everyone. #G2great
A7: Curriculum is responsive & intentional. Meet Ss where they are; not teaching same pages every year. Add in Read Alouds for empathy & community building. Ask which character was best friend and WHY? Ss thinking, not just memorizing. Joyful R & W!
#G2great
A5 There are SO many wonderful books we can use to help children develop social skills, build empathy & empower kids. Just a few of my favorites...
Each Kindness by @JackieWoodson
Sparkle Boy by @lesleanewman
Wonder by @RJPalacio
Wishtree by @kaaauthor#g2great
A6: Community can’t happen in a classroom built around competition. Kids can’t think someone must lose in order for them to win. Learning is for everyone. #G2great
A6 #g2great Our go-to can sometimes be to take choices/objects/privileges away from kids. Instead, use as opportunity to support self-regulation skills. Today we made a chart called "What To Do When we Get Distracted"
A7 REFUSE to allow snake oil salesmen to design the currilculum for you. If it's @ publishers kids get lost in the mix. Why do we still covet basals? Mind boggling! #G2Great
A7 we need to meet kids where they are, not give them a one size fits all, lesson-by-lesson curriculum; build on kids strengths and passions!! #G2great
In many publications this year, I’ve noticed a trend: folks are pushing back on programs, scripted lessons, and prescribed curricula. Teachers are yearning to reimagine their teaching with students AS the curriculum—not recipients of a sterile, stagnant curriculum. #g2great
#G2Great A5- Here are a few simple charts that we made this year to discuss emotions. Being and empathy are two huge social skills in K (and in life!). Sky Color is one of my faves introducing being flexible. Leonardo the Terrible Monster for emapthy.
#g2great I am so lucky that my school district works with @EllinKeene and she helped us write our literacy curriculum. NO worksheets and NO basalt in sight!
A7: A "Kids First" curriculum is just that: determined by Ss' authentic curiosities. What can we do as Ts to make our curric. more responsive? Listen to Ss. Give them the time & space to lead while we facilitate their learning #g2great
A7: @JSerravallo ‘s book Teaching Reading in Small Groups really rocked my world (and, fun fact, was a big driver for me to go to grad school at TC!). The book opened up my teaching to lots of different kinds of small groups- and not just in reading. #G2Great
A7: Find the hidden ‘Easter eggs’ in curriculum. Engagement is key. Expectations and standards come to life when we look beyond the words and into the deeper skills and meaning. #G2great
A7: I think it's really diving into our TEKS and seeing where kids are within that. Knowing how to grow all kids a year, no matter where they start #g2great
A7: Curriculum is responsive & intentional. Meet Ss where they are; not teaching same pages every year. Add in Read Alouds for empathy & community building. Ask which character was best friend and WHY? Ss thinking, not just memorizing. Joyful R & W!
#G2great
So well stated @Affinito. A student first classroom requires teachers who teach from their beliefs and expertise in constructing information with their students. The learners have to come fist. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A7: Inspired by their Voice and fuelled by their Choice. I find kids say they want a lot but only do some of it. Building a curriculum around what they say they want and then adjusting to fit what they are actually choosing to do would be an informative practice. #g2great
A7 @RDinnerstein Taught me Benchmarks and standards are like a destination on a map. Curriculum suggests a route. The off-roads--where our students take us---get us there too, and make for the best experiences! #g2great
#g2great I am so lucky that my school district works with @EllinKeene and she helped us write our literacy curriculum. NO worksheets and NO basalt in sight!
A7: A #kidsfirst curriculum is driven by student interest. We’re learning what they want to learn and through that Ss grow as readers, writers, thinkers. #g2great
A7 Know your kids. Know the research. There are no shortcuts to creating a kids first curriculum. It can't be responsive if fidelity isn't to THEM! #G2Great
A5: I started my career as a kindergarten teacher. Bobbi Fischer’s Joyful Learning was my bible. It changed the way I worked with kids forever. #G2Great
A6:building a community means I’m helping to develop global citizens who are on a path to independence. Being managed means adults are training for compliance. Community members take risks and there’s value in learning from mistakes. #g2great
Some of your SS will be competitive play personalities. I think it depends on the makeup of your class. Although I have to agree #learningisforeveryone#g2great
A6: Community can’t happen in a classroom built around competition. Kids can’t think someone must lose in order for them to win. Learning is for everyone. #G2great

We need to teach preservice teachers, and ourselves, how to be more thoughtful curators of resources we especially find online. Pinterest can be a double edged sword. #G2great
In many publications this year, I’ve noticed a trend: folks are pushing back on programs, scripted lessons, and prescribed curricula. Teachers are yearning to reimagine their teaching with students AS the curriculum—not recipients of a sterile, stagnant curriculum. #g2great
Same with us! In fact, we did it today! "Everyone's on time today, everyone is here! Everyone is here today, so let's all give a cheer! HEY!" :) #g2great
#g2great A7: A “Kids first” curriculum is exactly what it says.. it puts the kids front and center. Where are they? Where will they go next? How can I help them get there while at the same time trusting them to lead the way?
A7 Start where they are. This means getting to know our Ss, identifying what they can do, and deciding the next step, the nudge. Not looking for what they can't do and highlighting the deficits. #G2Great
#g2great I am so lucky that my school district works with @EllinKeene and she helped us write our literacy curriculum. NO worksheets and NO basalt in sight!
A5: I started my career as a kindergarten teacher. Bobbi Fischer’s Joyful Learning was my bible. It changed the way I worked with kids forever. #G2Great
Confession: I had two sub days the other day and broke out the old "collection" of short stories for kids to do. I was greeted Wednesday with " We need to talk, what was with the Crossroads Book? That is not you Mr.Gilson" LOL I felt shame and Pride all at once. #g2great
A7 Curriculum starts with knowing your kids. Their interests, their curiosity, their identities, what they bring from their home and culture is the foundation of our teaching and their learning. #g2great
A7 Kids are hard wired to explore and make sense of their world. We are but conduits to make that pathway available. In a 4 year old classroom last week a group of kids made this. Just because they were fascinated with what they found on the yard #g2great

A8: Self- care. Need friend, sounding board, mentor, problem solver. Active hobby to let off steam. Focus on paying attention to Ss. Requires focus & strong belief system. Belief in Ss and their capability! And T strength as well!
#G2great
A6. The English nerd in me is drawn to the essential difference in the verbs "building" & "managing." Both deal with hands but building implies a community of collaboration & investment. Management is a single set of control-seeking hands #g2great
A7 Kids are hard wired to explore and make sense of their world. We are but conduits to make that pathway available. In a 4 year old classroom last week a group of kids made this. Just because they were fascinated with what they found on the yard #g2great
Absolutely. What does it mean @christine_hertz that so many teachers are Type A? We need to support each other in letting go of perfection and embracing the present.#G2Great#LitBankStreet
A1 Letting go of teacher ego, need for everything to be perfect (ahem...this is so very hard for me) and make decisions based on what will be better for the kids, rather than only thinking what is better for us. #G2great
I think we need a Professional Reading Renaissance in schools. Staff meetings could be book clubs based on professional texts. Grade-level meetings could be teachers contextualizing the readings to their classrooms. This is what I would love to see happen! #g2great
In many publications this year, I’ve noticed a trend: folks are pushing back on programs, scripted lessons, and prescribed curricula. Teachers are yearning to reimagine their teaching with students AS the curriculum—not recipients of a sterile, stagnant curriculum. #g2great
#g2great I am so lucky that my school district works with @EllinKeene and she helped us write our literacy curriculum. NO worksheets and NO basalt in sight!
A7: Students TEACHING students... Students CREATING through CHOICE. Students sharing their VOICE with their peers. Put simply: Students loving school and learning! #G2Great

A8- I exercise at lunch time with a colleague- my kids often pop their head into the room to see what we're up to- I love that they can see us doing what we need to do to stay happy and healthy #g2great
All the more reason why teachers need to band together and support each other in what is good and strong and responsible pedagogy. Right, @MrazKristine ? #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A8 This year I am trying "Self Care Tuesday" No matter what, I leave school when the kids do on Tuesdays. Setting the intention leads to more self-care at home. Keeps me afloat for the rest of the week #g2great
A8: So hard, but so important. 5 am @DEFINE_katy workout sessions with @cmdismuke2 Connecting with friends & mentors. Quality time with family #g2great
A4. For a few years I was fortunate to have a very large room. I put tables & chairs on 1 side & the other side of the room was the couch, reading hut, pillows, bean bags. Floor space worked so well. Ss were able to sit and lay on the floor to work if they chose. #g2great
A8: I try to connect with colleagues every day. Even just for a few minutes or over a quick lunch. Sometimes to process a situation and sometimes just to chat movies or weekend plans. Also. I really like chocolate after lunch. Every day. #g2great
A8 self care for me is (trying) to let go of work and focus on my family when home; story time at bedtime with my kiddos is my daily therapy; also coming on Twitter to get engaged and inspired #G2great
A8: Surround myself with the brilliant #curiositycrew and #g2great people and I teach. My kids and their awesome is the best self care I can find. I was yelled at for stopping our read aloud today. An EA was also answering my questions which was a fun first :) #g2great
A8: Self care leads to more creativity! Allow your brain a break, as well as the brains of your students. I've enacted 5-10 minutes of relaxation station after lunch and recess to recharge our bodies! #G2Great
#g2great A8: I read. A lot. Most of what I read is stuff I can take into my classroom, but I also make time to read books just for me. I also try not to bring home work that feels like a chore. Paperwork and drudgery stays at school (sadly… I wish I could get rid of all of it)
A8 This year I am trying "Self Care Tuesday" No matter what, I leave school when the kids do on Tuesdays. Setting the intention leads to more self-care at home. Keeps me afloat for the rest of the week #g2great
A8 Plenty of rest, ability to leave personal/work stress outside the classroom (meditation, yoga, exercise--whatever works for you). Being kind to yourself translates in being able to extend kindness and generosity to the kids we love. #g2great
I think this is so important. My mindset totally shifts at the end of the roughest of days if I've had a chance to connect with some colleagues- just a few minutes laughing about life can be a perfect 'reset' for the rest of the day #g2great
#g2great A8: I also eat lunch in the lounge with my awesome colleagues. It is a happy place where we talk like actual people about TV, books, movies, our families… pretty much everything but school! This recharges me in the middle of the day.
A8 Surround yourself w/ a supportive professional posse. They will sustain inspire & support you. It's always been my first order of business at any of my schools. #G2Great
A8: I practice yoga, occasionally have a glass of wine and I surround myself with people who share my beliefs in teaching. (That's you @rocco_lkwd ) #G2great
Love this idea! They have been doing some online books clubs here. Used your book this fall and my book this spring! Yay! It seems more convenient for the teachers but I love the idea of in school conversations AND APPLICATION. #G2Great
#G2Great is so excited to welcome our good friends the #BowTieBoys back to the guest host seat next week. Please help us explore ow to create a positive learning environment through THIER very wise eyes friends. @MisterAMisterAhttps://t.co/dg8vobPaXs
#g2great I want to thank you all for such an amazing chat. I am always uplifted by this chat and during my week I hear your whispers in my ear encouraging me to always put kids first, be positive, and most of all to know there is a joyous crowd of Ts out there!
In reply to
@hayhurst3, @MrazKristine, @christine_hertz, @brennanamy, @DrMaryHoward, @franmcveigh
A8- Self-care is opening up and inviting others in to see the joy of the students. I have always told my admin I am going to follow the research and do what is best for kids. Come see what I am doing. #g2great
Wow. What An hour! It will take days to digest all the great thinking here! Stay in touch as you read and let us know what you think and what questions you have #G2great
Please join me Sunday night if you have the time to just talk literacy with #SRLedchat and my friends form the #curiositycrew that can make it. March 4th 7pm CST #g2great
I'm also wondering if maybe I can do something like this at my PD school next year. Still toying around with some ideas but maybe the classroom teachers can be reading some of the same books that my undergrads are reading & we can all have conversations around it! #G2Great
.@christine_hertz I love the importance of connecting. This is crucial. We work together, as a team and a community -
for chocolate and for processing our days. @suzrolander is an expert connector. You'd appreciate her far reach. #G2Great#LitBankStreet
A8: I try to connect with colleagues every day. Even just for a few minutes or over a quick lunch. Sometimes to process a situation and sometimes just to chat movies or weekend plans. Also. I really like chocolate after lunch. Every day. #g2great
Thank you all for chatting with
@MrazKristine and @christine_hertz around
Kids First From Day One.
Thanks @HeinemannPub for the book giveaway.
Thanks to the #G2Great family for being here to learn, laugh and chat!
