Hi #edtechchat, My name is Sarah and I am a student teacher from New Zealand. I need to participate in a few twitter chats for an assignment. Hope all is well!
Hi I'm Taylor Miller I am sophomore at Kent State University with a major in mild/moderate special education. Looking forward to the tweet chat tonight :) #edtechchat
Hello, everyone! My name is Ayana Getz, and I am a student at Kent State University, majoring in speech-language pathology and minoring in mild to moderate special education. I am excited to participate tonight! #edtechchat#barbersclass
As a former edu adjunct I asked PSTs to participate in twitter edu chats. It is a valuable 24/7 help desk and the people are pretty cool too! #EDUwin#edtechchat
Good evening #edtechchat! N from 🇨🇦 checking in. #edtech creator, cofounder, enthusiast. A bit confused on tonight's topic... but looking forward to it anyway :)
Hi, my name is Hannah Barlette. I am majoring in Early Childhood Education with a minor in mild/mod special education at Kent State University. #edtechchat
#edtechchat Tosca Killoran Teacher, Former Digital Learning Coach, now... director of @TheLevel5 an innovation hub in Skekou, China. You all still around?
Hey everyone! Just saw @leclair_t and @ToscaKilloran join so figured I would too! Joining from Guangzhou, China - MS/HS Tech & Innovation Coach #edtechchat
in the classrooms that I have been in, I like to use the smartboard, ipads, and google drive to help students learn #edtechchat@barbersclass#barbersclass
A1 - Depends on age group and type. But simplest one would be a computer with internet access. Next, google docs/flipgrid bring in collaboration. Then tools like dragonbox, prodigy, classcraft, goosechase for gamifying... #edtechchat
Hi, i am kamala carol pitta from New zealand, student of diploma in christian education would like to join the chat being a mechanical engineer basically #edtechchat
A1 I feel like I use my iPad, laptop, Explain Everything, and a Kahoot, google and apple apps (like doc and pages) on anything and everything!!! #edtechchat
the students I am working with also really enjoy Kahoot and Flipgrid. I am not very familiar with them yet, but am trying to use them more #edtechchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A1: My fav tools are those that allow for creation and collaboration. If the tool elevates learning then its great. Focus on the learning goals....not the actual tool #edtechchat
So many great tools and teachers should not be afraid to try them out. I have so many of those mentioned on My Tech pages https://t.co/TbR4csJzWI@Kahoot iPad Podcasting Pinterest Twitter iPhone Google @Flipgrid#edtechchat
we have recently looked at some of the lessons on states, Ss learned a lot about Pennsylvania they did not know, and I added in some other activities #edtechchat
A2: The environment! everything seems to be classroom focused. There are so many learning opportunities that can be found outside the classroom. #edtechchat
A2: A old school tool that I still use today is simply an individual dry erase board and maker. Sometimes technology isn't needed. #umedtech#edl577um#edtechchat
A2: I think a “sleeper” tool could be the outdoors environment. There are so many natural resources that can be used to help teach children such as life cycles. #edtechchat
It's a website where you can make flashcards and study for exams. It is great, because there are a bunch of different ways to use the flashcards when studying. You have to check it out! #edtechchat
A2: I have not had the chance to use any tools in my own classroom yet, but I am excited to check out all of these amazing tools veteran teachers have exposed me to tonight, such as OneNote Education @OneNoteEDU! #edtechchat#barbersclass
A2: office 365. I know give me the Google for schools response but O365 is solid, familiar and is starting to rock opportunities for collaboration. #edtechchat
I used it 2 years ago as a way to review for a Spanish 3 final, ss loved it, and I wrote about it in @TeachingFactor Gamify Literacy, scavenger hunt fun @GooseChase#edtechchat
In reply to
@magistrazee, @MusingsOnEdTech, @GooseChase, @TeachingFactor, @GooseChase
A2: We use a CD player to listen to music in the preschool I am at for field experience. There is not smart board, computers, or laptops so it is nice to use as an alternative to Youtube. #edtechchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
I enjoy it for my own efforts at being an artist. Ss gravitate towards it when developing slide shows etc. Easy to use and has a personal touch. #edtechchat
@quizlet is a great tool, Ss can get the app, have access to study cards, games, Ts can play a Live game in class, many options, easy to use #edtechchat
A2: I think a sleeper tool would be teaching students how to properly use technology. Teaching students how to make different presentations online can be very useful. #edtechchat
A2: Sleeper tool...hmm...I have really been into the family of apps by the @nysci One called Choreo turns your own picture into a movable video of angles. Another one called Fraction Mash put two faces together and calculates the fraction. #edtechchat
jumping in. A2: The old individual whiteboard and markers. Math is much more fun on these. My ss even take math selfies with them and stick them in a draw slide in nearpod. #edtechchat
Remember when we'd all practice writing our letters with sand?! I agree with a lot of people on using dry erase boards too. Sometimes technology isn't always required to teach a lesson. #edtechchat#barbersclass
A2. @ThingLink retooled and revamped- oldie but solid. I would say the same for some others, like @padlet - companies revamping to keep up. #edtechchat
A2: Microsoft products (like Word and Excel). We focus so much on Google Docs, but as a math teacher, I have found that Word has a far superior equation editor #edtechchat
A2 Flipgrid is an app that can be used on iPhone or iPad where every student has their own voice! (Or could work together!) students are able to post a video response it helps with formative assessment and discussion. We use it almost every week!! #edtechchat
A3: I am not too fond of using youtube. With 3rd graders, they can often find videos that are not school appropriate, and it can be difficult monitoring that #edtechchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
A3 - too many to name. But my general pet peeve is gamified edtech where Ss can't fail. And then, when an S magically gets to the end of a lesson/segment/game they heap praise on them, with no actual clue if the S learned anything (or knows anything). #edtechchat
A3: As a student, I don’t really like using Flipgrid. Personally, I would much prefer writing something. It is still useful for other kinds of students, though. #edtechchat
A3: Since I am only a student, I have not noticed any tools that I do not like. There are so many good tools for classrooms! @barbersclass#barbersclass#edtechchat
And *then*, to top it all off, most of these apps have teacher dashboards that show how Ss are "succeeding" and Ts use them to grade Ss. :( *Real* mastery matters. Fake, randomly click your way through it, should be thrown out. #edtechchat
A2: A whiteboard! Whether they are the classroom white board or individual ones, students love writing on the board and they can be more reliable than smart boards #edtechchat
A3: Padlet. I think it's mostly because I'm a high school math teacher, so I feel pretty limited on how I can use it. The times I have used it as a student, I haven't been impressed. #edtechchat
A3: As a student teacher I've found most tools have their uses within the classroom but I will eventually get to the point where I wont need one or two once I start teaching. #edtechchat
A3: Kahoot. It's difficult when you don't have the ability to do 1:1. I prefer to use 1:all tech, because that's all I can do at this time. #edtechchat
A2 #edtechchat another tool to revisit is definitely @brainpop There's a great movie on Social Media...plus you can make your own Movie which the Ss love.
I am not a huge fan of using videos on Kahn academy, they are typically dull and although they provide quality information they are tough to remain attentive to. #edtechchat
The interactive features are clunky and not user intuitive. Most of our teachers rarely use the interactive stuff, just as an expensive digital whiteboard. #edtechchat
A3: I have learned about some interesting new programs to use in classrooms. When I become a teacher I will probably be introduced to some tools that are not for me. #edtechchat
A3: Personally I am not a fan of Kahoot, but I know that a lot of other students are. It's all about preference and finding what works for the majority of students though. #edtechchat
Depends. I use it. However, I'm the one curating and monitoring segments. I love NASA footage (and many other things there.) but students don't have free reign. #edtechchat
Agreed. I think Prezi can make beautiful presentations. But the time to make one of those (and the talent needed to figure it out), especially for a one-shot presentation, is usually not worth it. #edtechchat
A3 I’ve heard of a lot of teachers using QR scanners for worksheets or project? I am just totally confused on how it all works! Would this be a problem if not all students had their own device? #edtechchat
A3: I have not been impressed with some of the .... wait for it.... 1 size fits all , “personalized” learning platforms that are being produced. They are billed that in just 30 min a day your student can ____ in all subjects. #edtechchat
I haven't used an interactive white board since I yanked it off the wall and carried it to the tech office, where they said I could not do that ... I was like ... umm, I just did. #edtechchat
Does your school have class iPads or a mobile cart? We use QR for a variety of projects and have enough devices around for it to work well. #edtechchat
A3. Tools often go out of vogue or can't keep up, I think Twitter needs a retool of its algorithm, @trello is clunky, #garageband needs a retool for little kids, #googleclassroom is changing but still looks like a digitized version of "oldskool" learning environment #edtechchat
I think you have more control if you curate the content. I take off autoplay when I use YouTube. There was a time I had autoplay on, and the kids were anticipating the next video about Frozen until I shut YT off. Seriously, videos that are completely way off topic! #edtechchat
Yeah. I'm also not a fan of places that make a grade 1 math tool, then a grade 2, then a grade 3. Put them all together. We *know* that in a grade 2 classroom, you've got Ss ranging from K math skills to grade 5+ math skills. #edtechchat
I am not a fan of apps that remove the "work" from learning. If I am using tech as part of learning, I want them to learn how to use the tech. Make a movie vs having an app do it for you #edtechchat
A challenge for all tech tools is how we repurpose them for use in the classroom. Minecraft, social media, you tube, etc. can be powerful learning tools if we know S outcomes first and provide support & exploration. #edtechchat
Africa’s First Education Technology Incubator Opens Applications For Second Cohort, Injini - the first EdTech dedicated incubator on the African continent - will open its second round of applications - EdTechReview https://t.co/2sOLVKN7Ij#education#elearning#edtech#edtechchat
I’m a future teacher! I was wondering how teachers might use it if they don’t have one to one devices. Also, how do you create a QR/link it to something? Thnx #edtechchat
Yes, don't blame the tool, blame how it was introduced/being used. If you let kids use them the same way at school as they do at home it won't work! #edtechchat
I truly hate Prezi. So time consuming for a kind of presentation that is still sit-and-get. I've never seen one that wouldn't been better as like, a Powtoon. #edtechchat
Ah, we aren't one to one but use them. Our librarian created surveys and has QR codes around the library and a set of iPads kids can use to scan. Also used in a science class to bring scientists to life with video. #edtechchat
Hey #edtechchat! We know you're innovators in ed tech! Check out how we

I have an @ipevo wands that do everything an IWB can do at a fraction of the price. I use it primarily when I am showing kids how to use software like iMovie/GarageBand ... works perfect on my 8 ft screen. #edtechchat
I dont know about that! my daughter loves using Microsoft power point. She uses it at home. And I think it is an important tool for her to learn how to use. To be able to present her ideas differently. #edtechchat
Right. I like the idea of a table, but it would have to be an open platform with many touchpoints. I'd still need an educational justification. #edtechchat
A4 I think that it all depends on your group of students and they way that they are using it; it will differ between groups, but if it is engaging and they are learning, I say it is good quality #edtechchat#barbersclass@barbersclass
depends on your goal. If i want them to demonstrate mastery of content use the app. I would rather have content rich and app ok than the other way around in this case. #edtechchat But if I'm teaching a multimedia class I want them to be able to do the whole process.
Free is usually ok, but have to look at what limitations placed on you by only using the free version. Worst is to get teachers comfortable with a tool only to yank it away because can't fund it. #edtechchat
A4: How the children respond to using the tool, if they don’t feel like they are learning from that tool then that means it is not a useful tool for your classroom @barbersclass#barbersclaaa#edtechchat
A4: I think about two things. 1) Is the tool intuitive and easy to use? 2) What benefits does using the tool have over a non-digital option? #edtechchat
A4 A quality tool meets learner outcomes, moves learning forward for each S, plays nicely with other tools, easy to navigate, and empowers students. #edtechchat
A4: Efficiency, usability, and most importantly, a tool that actually enhances the learning experience rather than just a tool used because it's "fun and exciting" #edtechchat
Even if the Prezi's are more elaborate, I'd rather the students be learning and listening to the information rather than being distracted by the presentation on the board! #edtechchat
I would also note not to start with choosing tech first. Have a plan and objectives in place, then choose digital and nondigital tools that can enhance activities. #edtechchat
A4 A quality tool is something that enhances your lesson and the student's learning. It is not switching a paper and pencil worksheet to a word doc #edtechchat
A4: A quality tool is one that is engaging and easy to use. One the the children can connect with and be able to use in and outside the classroom. #edtechchat
A4. #edtechchat Does it allow people to collaborate, communicate effectively, is it compatible with other apps & interfaces nicely, does it help learners create content rather than just consume it? Is it easy to install, use, upkeep? Is it a hindrance or help to the learning?
Advancing learning by providing an experience that was previously not possible, rather than just replicating a task that could be done before. #edtechchat
Love the "plays nicely with other tools"....having tools you can #appsmash with is awesome. Shows that new ways of creation have been considered. #edtechchat
A4 accessibility for students, easy to learn how to use, meets ISTE/state standards, and most importantly the student actually think it’s FUN to learn with! #edtechchat
A4: It depends on the class and group of students mostly. It is important the students are engaged, the tool is affordable, and easy accessible. #edtechchat
A4 - Quality tools at *minimum* do what they say they will do. They don't worry about doing everything, just doing their basic goal *really well*.
Even better if they're easy for both Ts and Ss to pick up and learn and they care about privacy. #edtechchat
A: a variety of speaking/recording devices as well as free/cheap programs to allow students to create their own graphic novels in the target language. #edtechchat
#edtechchat Q4: It may take time to evaluate a tool. There have been times that I have dismissed tools that later I used because I was able to see over time how valuable they were. Also seeing how students interact with the tool is great indicator.
A4: As an upper level math teacher, HUGE benefit is can I easily do equations on it and can the students easily respond using equations. There is so many cool tools that aren't good form math :( #edtechchat
A4 : the tool should focus on a definite subject with instructions of use,
it should have a step by step approach
it should mention the practical applications #edtechchat
A4. Simple- F-R-E-E! Since my district has G Suite for Education I tend to stick to those apps. I don't want to overwhelm my 3rd graders. Then I stick to things, like Kahoot, that are super easy for Ss to learn #edtechchat
Thanks. The ease at which one tool can connect with another opens up creative possibilities for Ss and allows them to better share their understandings. #edtechchat
A4: versatile, student ownership, as I purchase for the whole district, how many licenses, how many ss will be impacted, will it bring about a change, will they be used or is it an expensive virtual doorstop #edtechchat
A4: test new tools out with each class you have! Each classroom is different so some tools make work better or worse in each one, just depending on each class. In my opinion, it never hurts to try new things/tools out every once and a while. #edtechchat
A1: For me it’s all about global awareness and culture. Even though I provide hands on and relevant culture experiences, students need opportunities to go beyond my walls. #EdTechChat
A5: When kids are disengaged or spending more time playing with trivial features (fonts, colors, etc) than focusing on material/content. Kids are very honest, usually clear to see when they have moved past something. #edtechchat
A5: When a tool become more trouble than it is worth. When the students are no longer interested and view it as just another "have to" the tool is no longer valuable. #umedtech#edl577um#edtechchat
A5: When the students seem less interested and less engaged. Or, if it's a young classroom, they might even just tell you that they don't like the activity anymore. #edtechchat
Q5: When SS start losing interested in it and become disengaged. When they dont have a positive response when you tell them to start using that tool. #edtechchat
A5: The look on the kids' faces and pervasive quietness. I rotate my tech, so I try to have big gaps between using different tools. I may use EdPuzzle once a month. I've only used FlipGrid once, and it was okay, but it dragged out too long, so I got tired. #edtechchat
Not me! Them!! lol We practice our persuasive language to convince me to make a change - I love to play devil's advocate in those circumstances #edtechchat
A4: when it’s no longer a challenge to use, even for the students who are behind. Or when students ask for bookwork instead of whatever ‘cool’ 21st century app/program. #edtechchat
A5 A tool looses its effectiveness when it keeps students from sharing their learning, slows them down because of compatibility issues, or I have learned something new and the tool no longer matches outcomes. #edtechchat
A5. Hard to know if it is the tool or initiative fatigue. The next shiny new thing is not necessarily better. If the tech breaks down, is glitchy, or teachers spend more time on the tech than the learning- that's my personal cut off point. #edtechchat
A5. Hard to know if it is the tool or initiative fatigue. The next shiny new thing is not necessarily better. If the tech breaks down, is glitchy, or teachers spend more time on the tech than the learning- that's my personal cut off point. #edtechchat
A6: Show it off! Invite people in to see it. Get visibility in the school to get other teachers to want in on the action! Have kids post about it on their ePortfolios/blogs, too! #edtechchat
Can tools "lose their appeal?" Is it the tool or what is being asked? Is it a slippery slope if we keep looking for the next bell and whistle? #edtechchat
Good point! I think that this goes beyond tech tools and just to any type of activity in general. I've seen it! I think the amt of time spent using the tool plays a role, as well as how much you use it. #edtechchat
If they're overused, absolutely. Not necessary to constantly integrate new tools, just make sure to switch it up and give students options. #edtechchat
A6: Show it off! Invite people in to see it. Get visibility in the school to get other teachers to want in on the action! Have kids post about it on their ePortfolios/blogs, too! #edtechchat
How wonderful! Yeah I’ve looked at how I can incorporate this to make any type of research report or presentation. I feel like it would be a fun experience instead of stressful for anxious/shy presenters! #edtechchat

A6 Broadcast student learning of all shapes and sizes. Analog and digital work are shared via twitter (short form) and student generated blog (long form). Students also share learning amongst themselves and tools get plenty of airtime. #edtechchat
A6: I use the ASSURE model to some extent, so whether a tool tanks or succeeds, I reflect and evaluate how I could better use the tool or in what situations I could use it. #edtechchat
A6: I would give the students time after we are done with said tool to let them play around with it! For example, if they are using an iPad, I would let them play a game of choice (to an extent of course) to show them appreciation for participating successfully. #edtechchat
A6: I celebrate a useful tool by bragging about it and showing it to peers and how well it worked in my classroom! @barbersclass#barbersclass#edtechchat
A4: For me it has to be user friendly, low cost/free, able to use across platforms, and helps me get my students to the goaI have set for them. #edtechchat
A6. Just reread your question, sorry. I think principals giving hand written notes in mailboxes thanking teachers and noticing innovative practice is powerful. I still keep notes from 18 years ago and my first principal. #edtechchat
This is true. I try my best to change how we use our tools to refresh them and extend their use.I've asked students how we can use tools in their learning before and I've been surprised by the creativity many many times. #edtechchat
I see the value of digital exit tickets especially in regards to the immediacy and use them here and there in the form of Socrative and Forms but I enjoy journaling to get to the big ideas....allowing students to use dictation tools if necessary. ##edtechchat
