A1: #flipgrid could be described as "Instagram Stories for Education" just to get the concept. Then add, "But everyone can see the replies."
So, face-to-face discussion you can do from home!

Morning, #hacklearning. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. In 2017-18, we dabbled in Flipgrid; now in 2018-19, platform's even more widely available: https://t.co/9YfJDTy8TD
TRUTH! Punishment increases stress for all involved, and stress inhibits effective learning, especially for traumatized children. Invest in problem solving for healthier students, better learning, more success. #HackLearning#Sunchat#tlap
A1 Flipgrid is a user-friendly video system that provides a different way to answer questions or create content so that everyone truly has a voice #HackLearning
A1: Here's how the @Flipgrid folks say it: Flipgrid is where your students go to share ideas and learn together. It’s where students amplify and feel amplified. It’s video the way students use video. Short. Authentic. And fun! #HackLearning
A1: @Flipgrid is an asynchronous video discussion platform, which allows Ss to reflect & share their thinking about a topic. The best part is that they can take their conversation in a different direction w/o the Ts having to initiate. #HackLearning
A1 - @flipgrid is an interactive video learning tool that increases opportunities for connection. It's takes traditional learning and "flips" the dynamic. No longer teacher focused! #hacklearning
A1: @Flipgrid is a video response tool that gives all Ss a voice! Usable in all grade levels and subject areas, can help connect classrooms and amplify learning. #HackLearning
A1 I have explained it as a great tool for communication and assessment of true understanding of my students. I also emphasize student voice. #hacklearning
A1 I introduced it to my Ss by comparing it to Snapchat. If I were talking to a T I would just describe it as video responses to a question. #hacklearning
A1. Flipgrid is a digital tool - only 1 device needed - where every single student can give voice to the problem, no matter how quiet or shy. #HackLearning

A1- @Flipgrid is an opportunity for every student to have a voice. Students respond to video about a concept. SS can also use @Screencastify to explain their screen and upload their video to @Flipgrid#hacklearning
A2: I'm a beginner when it comes to #flipgrid, so I don't have any #gridpals. But it sounds amazing, and I would like to know more! Anyone want to be my #gridpal?
I can predict that it would Ss and Ts feel like they are part of something bigger!
#HackLearning

A1: @Flipgrid is an audio / visual tool that allows to share, discuss, and reflect, globally if desired, that engages, and that allows Ss and Ts to see Ss undertanding. #HackLearning
A1 A tool to share a video recording for a variety of purposes. Great for Ss but also can be for adults to share messages to Ss and parents/community. Lots of uses. #HackLearning
There are still ways around that....Ss can wear a mask, or take the video of an object (in my class, their musical instruments). Helps them feel comfortable participating #hacklearning

Hello! I finally made it to the #HackLearning chat at the right time! Yipppee! I'm Tara from Michigan! I teach HS Spanish and English. ☺ Good to be here! I JUST created a @Flipgrid acct last night. 💗 Looking forward to learning ways to put it to best use. 💗 Thx!
A1 a space for kids and teachers and parents to convene and share work, reflections, perspectives, and good vibes re learners and learning #hacklearning
Q2: Flipgrid connects classrooms around the world through #GridPals. What are the benefits of global discussions & connections for students? #HackLearning
We had some students embarrassed to hear/see themselves on video storyboard their entire clip and film that. It was a totally different way for them to interact with the discussion. #HackLearning

I dig Flipgrid but at the same time I have to be aware that just because I like something does not mean every student will ... not every student wants to put themselves out there ... must respect their privacy #hacklearning
Q2: Flipgrid connects classrooms around the world through #GridPals. What are the benefits of global discussions & connections for students? #HackLearning
A1 What if you could record & share videos as easily as jotting & handing off sticky notes? Flipgrid offers one possible answer to that question. #hacklearning
A1: @Flipgrid is an easy to use platform that gives us a place to use our voice to answer questions and share ideas. My 4th graders LOVED it. My media specialist and I are already listing ways we will use it school wide this fall :) #HackLearning
Hi from Sarasota. I’m sitting in today to get some ideas about @flipgrid I think my students are using tablets with cameras this year so it would be great to try. #hacklearning
I dig Flipgrid but at the same time I have to be aware that just because I like something does not mean every student will ... not every student wants to put themselves out there ... must respect their privacy #hacklearning
Such an easy way to get family envolvement also. Plus the fact that family memembers can also leave a video responce, that can be so powerful for kids. #hacklearning
I even had parents participate, by creating a grid for them. I asked them to share how they use reading & writing skills in their jobs each day. The Ss loved it!
#hacklearning

A1 What if you could record & share videos as easily as jotting & handing off sticky notes? Flipgrid offers one possible answer to that question. #hacklearning
A2 Could help develop empathy and understanding of different perspectives ... make global connections (like the “old” pen pal system) ... overcome obstacles like time, religious differences, cultural differences ... #HackLearning
Q2: Flipgrid connects classrooms around the world through #GridPals. What are the benefits of global discussions & connections for students? #HackLearning
A1. @flipgrid#empowers ALL of my kiddos & amplifies thwir VOICE! It is as easy as 1-record 2-stop 3- selfie with stickers 🤣. So fun! Seamless integration into EVERY subject! We have #FlipGridFever YEAR ROUND;) #HackLearning
A1 Flipgrid is a tool for conversations. I love flipgrid's platform as it allows for a participant to put thought into answers and comments. Not all of us have the ability to be brilliant on the first go with seconds notice ☺️. #hacklearning 🐝💪
A2) Learn about other cultures and areas; understand what we have in common; work together on similar topics; share our learning with others. #HackLearning
Q2: Flipgrid connects classrooms around the world through #GridPals. What are the benefits of global discussions & connections for students? #HackLearning
Connected students are more likely to share their voice, they develop collaboration skills, and gain understanding of others. Thanks @sylviaduckworth for another amazing visual from @JCasaTodd#hacklearning
A2: We are able to accomplish so much more when we are connected. Tools like @flipgrid allow us to help students connect to others around the globe. #HackLearning
A2: by connecting classrooms through #gridpals Ss gain new perspective and get the opportunity to learn from peers outside of their schools #HackLearning
A2 - learning SHOULD be interactive and inclusive of a wide variety of POVs. Students benefit from sharing their ideas while also learning new ideas from others. #hacklearning
A2 I had my students involved in Gridpals towards the end of the year. It was great for them to share knowledge of content with kids from another state! It got the kids excited about learning & they got to experience a classroom that was different in culture #hacklearning
Yes ... given as an option is awesome because we can encourage and challenge but have to be aware of the students’ willingness to take a risk or quit 😇 #HackLearning
I dig Flipgrid but at the same time I have to be aware that just because I like something does not mean every student will ... not every student wants to put themselves out there ... must respect their privacy #hacklearning
A2: I don't have any #gridpals but I do have students from around the globe. I wonder if I could connect my students in the US with students from their native country, possibly their old school. That would be cool. #HackLearning
A2: Global connections primarily link students that would not necessarily cross paths otherwise. Which allows them to learn new ways of thinking and expand on their current modes of though. This alone can completely alter how a student sees their potential. #hacklearning
Great modification for students to ease into @Flipgrid and help them be more at ease. We don't help shy students by distancing them from social interactions. We support them by making them comfortable with them. #HackLearning
A2-
1. Educational Skills Improve
2. SS develop compassion and understanding
3. SS Develop Social Skills
4. develops a child's curiosity
5. SS are able to Share Perspectives and Expertise
#hacklearning
Why do I have to force kids to do something they do not want to do? There is a fine line between pushing a kid’s boundary and bullying them into a space they don’t want to be in ... I have kids who are not on SM out of privacy concerns. #HackLearning
A2 GridPals is a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with other schools, professionals across 🌍 and time zones don't matter. We did just that, working on SDG14 with a class in New York #HackLearning
A2: I only dabbled in Flipgrid last year, but saw how others were using it in a more global way. Now that it is free for educators I really want to explore more and help our Ts to use it withint the classroom to get the global thinking happening. #hacklearning
I can struggle with that. If it will enhance the students' learning, I think I would try to work with the student to get them to put themselves out there in some way. #HackLearning
A2 Opens up a world of experiences. Ss can learn so much about others who share similar experiences but in different locations. Brings Ss together to learn collaboration skills for future. Much like we collaborate here. #HackLearning
A2: I have learned, talked, and written about relevance in learning this week and having global connections increases relevance in learning @mcleod#hacklearning
It is powerful for students to hear from students around the world on similar subjects. Anytime we can incorporate different perspectives we will grow. #hacklearning
A2 For my math Ss, they can be introduced to other Ss thought process and methods. My Ss tend to get hung up on one method and have trouble thinking outside the box sometimes even, when an alternative strategy may make more sense to them. #hacklearning
A2: Learn culture. See how alike we are. Different perspectives, build empathy. Hopefully erase some negativity in our world, build our future. @flipgrid allows to see and hear, not just text. No concerns about time zones. #HackLearning
A1: I want my students to say they caught the #FlipgridFever! (Hope I'm using the ## correctly!!). Connecting w/classrooms outside the building, & especially globally, gives students a sense of community & allows them to hear the views of those different than them. #HackLearning
A2: global connections allows students to understand their experiences are not necessarily normative. The ability to de-center one’s self is critical for building capacity to lead and engage across difference #hacklearning
A2 What might be benefits of "global discussions & connections"? If, as saying goes, smartest person in room is the room, then tough to beat potential in global-sized room. 2nd old saw: Marry the purpose, not the tool. Flipgrid is 1 of countless ways to connect. #hacklearning
A2 - for upper grade students, it's also a great way of showing that academia (and learning in general) is full of different and even conflicting ideas. That's okay...that's part of the learning process. #hacklearning
A2 Global connections provide perspectives and opinions from others that our students may not ever get the chance to hear without this kind of platform. #hacklearning
Hearing this, it seems like @flipgrid is even more beneficial. How many of today's students are NOT going to be expected to participate in video conferencing, etc? We can help them be more comfortable. They can delete, rerecord over and over. #HackLearning
In reply to
@timlriley, @Pomme_ed, @DennisDill, @Flipgrid, @Flipgrid
That is great but then you run into a time issue ... spending a whole class to complete a 90 second response is not good ... they could use iMovie in that amount of time #hacklearning
I mean, my own children don’t want to eat vegetables. Sometimes teaching them life involves “doing things we don’t want to do” can build resilience #hacklearning
Flipgrid is great for personal interaction, too. I created a quick #flipgrid for family and friends to send a message to my daughter before surgery. Imagine birthday wishes and other celebratory messages. #hacklearning
Great modification for students to ease into @Flipgrid and help them be more at ease. We don't help shy students by distancing them from social interactions. We support them by making them comfortable with them. #HackLearning
That is a really cool idea. We have a handful of families from Napal and it would be interesting to get something set up with their friends and teachers there. Thanks for the idea. #hacklearning
A3: #Flipgrid could be used to #Hacklearning by having Ss from different cities, states, countries collaborate on project. Ts could Co-Teach through in the same way.
Anyone want to try it!?
#HackLearning
Me too! Taught a small group to see how they would do & then they taught the rest of my kiddos. It as pretty amazing. We have lots of ways we are planning to utilize it next year- book reviews for the Library is the 1st one- iPad next to the book being reviewed! #hacklearning
Exactly. @Flipgrid takes the performance pressure of answering off because students can attempt and re-attempt. It's also a great way of reinforcing a growth mindset as the culture for a class. #HackLearning

I also think we can use video submissions through email to provide the skill but remove the risk of SM ... the one does the speaking does the learning ... can’t we provide the same idea and remove the risk without the skill? 😇 #HackLearning
So true Dennis - when kids have choices and those are honored it not only sends a message to them that their POV matters but also models that others’ comfort is of worth #HackLearning
A1: Here's how the @Flipgrid folks say it: Flipgrid is where your students go to share ideas and learn together. It’s where students amplify and feel amplified. It’s video the way students use video. Short. Authentic. And fun! #HackLearning

A1. I like the fact that #flipgrid allows you to interact and engage in your own time. You don’t need to schedule a specific time to meet others virtually like Skyping or Google Hangouts or Zoom. #HackLearning
A2. We had #gridpals from Pennsylvania & Australia we also used @flipgrid for a weather project where we learned about the weather globally-collected, tracked, & charted data! Helped kids with empathy, confidence, real workd experiences, connecting with others #HackLearning
A2 I think students would have a greater respect for the diversity within their own community if they had a better, more personal understanding. I read that eventually the entire country will be as diverse as LA.#hacklearning
Exactly. I’m thinking even on a regional level to connect with local schools. I am in an urban district which is extremely diverse. Everyone can learn from each other! #HackLearning
A3: I have used @Flipgrid for Ss who want to be in a book club reading the same text but in different class periods. It allows them to share ideas even w/o being face to face. #HackLearning
A3 - Going to experiment with students making mini summaries of major unit themes that will then by published in a video textbook for other students to learn from and review. #HackLearning
A3: Use @Flipgrid to have Ss create how-to videos. Check for Ss understanding through the explanation in the video, and other Ss have the opportunity to learn from their peers! #HackLearning
A3 Sts can simply verbally answer extended questions ... sts could read their essays - hopefully hearing the missing pieces... sts could peer review ... many possibilities #HackLearning
A2 some of my fondest memories as a student was corresponding by airmail letters with my class pen pals from China and Mexico (I was in 6th grade) gridpals ramps this up and opens the door for empathy, knowledge, and honoring where other students come from. #HackLearning
A3 There are so many possibilities! Collaboration among students across the globe in content, project based learning, empathy of different community problems. Parent involvement and learning. Professional development among educators. I could go on! #hacklearning
I think this is especially important for Ss who do not have the means to explore outside their own areas. This can bring the world to them. #hacklearning
I would argue that spending a whole class pd learning how to properly do a 90 sec response is important skill for ANY presentation. (I do limit my Flipgrids to 30 sec. because I want Ss to cull out what’s important.)
#HackLearning

@DennisDill, @Pomme_ed, @conniehamilton, @Flipgrid
The response feature allows students to respond to what they hear other students say. So, the learning doesn't just involve speak. There is a listening, synthesizing, and response component. #Flipgrid#hacklearning

I like that @Flipgrid is focused on learners ranging from PreK to PhD. I haven't had time to investigate further, but I've a feeling it won't be long before I do! #HackLearning
I was thinking about how many interviews are conducted via live stream video now. It isn't going to help students prepare for future employment if we don't help them overcome their introvert side by allowing them to not use video technology. #HackLearning

1.@WODBMath
2. Help ss get to know their classmates and teachers before school starting
3. Convince me that

4. Find the Mistake

A3: saw a great idea last night where students build a story by adding ideas. Perspectives on debatable topics. Sharing strategies with each other. #HackLearning
A3: I had my Ss explain why they chose a specific method to complete a math problem. This didn't go over well, but I think I failed at modeling what I expected. I will try again this year. #hacklearning
A3 Three Flipgrid uses students & I have tried: During family conference season (or any time), use Flipgrid for time-shifted check-ins. Co-create book-talk grids as reading recommendation source. Use to rehearse & gather feedback for in-person presentations. #hacklearning

We plan on using it for book reviews in the library. We’ve used it to share what we loved best about 4th grade with our incoming 3rd graders. Just a few examples... #hacklearning
A3 A teacher or administrator can use it to check for understanding. Often times we need to know if someone understands content being delivered. Flipgrid can be a platform to explain verbally vs in writing. #hacklearning
A3: Opening faculty sharing #hacklearning Teaching an online course next year w/ Ss from all over. would like them to use @Flipgrid for introductions, also like to use #Flipgrid for reflections...
Are you ready for #HackLearning slow chat this week ... Q1 on Monday 7:30 AM .. respond Monday-Wednesday ... Q2 on Thursday .. respond Thursday -Saturday... Learn, Reflect, Apply, Grow together!
A3 Staff could ‘intro’ themselves, create info for parents and/Ss. Admins could share policy info and other details. Endless opportunities when you think about it! #HackLearning
Of course there are always other ways to create this type of learning activity. Like all other tech options there are still other options. #hacklearning

Isn't revising and editing important too? Not suggesting they spend hours and hours, but there is also a benefit to being clear and articulate so others can follow your point. #HackLearning

Given the future seems to 2b more digital, & given the ability to research to a degree is also digital, the content may not be as critical as the skills you learn. Video skills may be more helpful. Like back in the day teaching kids how to use a graphing calculator #hacklearning

I have students who would LOVE this idea. We tried to set something up with YouTube videos but we weren’t able to make it happen. @Flipgrid might make things easier. #HackLearning
I am also not going to violate their privacy by forcing them to upload a video to the internet ... I don’t care how “private” people say it can be ... it is called respect for the student’s wishes. #HackLearning

I like it, Terry! That idea could even be mashed up with this one: https://t.co/mwzgL0OyP0 Writing (or speaking) format could be varied infinitely, with more or less structure, depending on participants/purposes. #hacklearning
Yes there is - however just consider what benefits there could be to helping students review how they are perceived when they talk. Self assessing their clarity and ability to communicate their thoughts. Not saying it's the only thing, just think it's important too. #HackLearning

Explaining math aloud is extremely difficult and an excellent skill. Maybe ask your students how to solve a problem rather than explain why they chose one method. #HackLearning
One caution that I have for teachers introducing @Flipgrid to their students is that you may not be aware of students who have been abused, especially sexually, & they may be very triggered about being photographed or on video, so allow for choice without pressure. #HackLearning

That statement could be true of a writing prompt also. I've had students trying to take huge chunks of time with their written response. The more comfortable they get with the writing the less time it takes. That's part of the learning/teaching process. #hacklearning
