I'm Chris, student teacher in rural PA high school. I'm an English/Literacy teacher, and my curiosity is excited by questions that I don't have answers to. #MinecraftEDU
Q0 Hello! Garrett here, MIE and Minecraft Master Trainer - I work with Ts and Schools to drive the best Engagement through GBL. Also co-founder of the #minecraftedu chat, and proud to let our Hosts @Mrs_Gozzard@dustin7carson and @GEDSB21C take this topic away!
Q0~ Welcome to tonight's #MinecraftEdu Chat! Please introduce yourself, your name, role, current coordinates, and what excites your curiosity? #GEDSB21C
A0: Cynthia Gozzard, Itinerant Teacher Ed Tech Elementary, Brantford Ontario - Grand Erie DSB #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C trying new things to ignite the learning process
Greetings #MinecraftEDU fans! Simon Vasey, Instructional Tech Coach and Minecraft Mentor from Lincolnshire, IL. Excited to see how people are encouraging #studentvoice in the #PD process!
Q1: How can including students, as both learners and leaders in the training process, impact learning for both students and teachers? #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C

Thanks for this @PBJellyGames now with our extended Twitter characters adding that second hashtag shouldn't use up your characters #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C S Partnerships are great!
A1 - #Minecraftedu Imagine this: You're someone who works on cars every day for your entire life and you attend a special car mechanic training, but don't get show the teacher all the tools you work with. How silly would that be?
Q1~ How can including students, as both learners and leaders in the training process, impact learning for both students and teachers? #MinecraftEdu#GEDSB21C
A0: Kevin Michael, instructional technology coach in Park Ridge, IL, and my interests are always expanding and evolving. Here to lurk and learn tonight. #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C
Including students as leaders especially in a game that many students enjoy can show teachers a new way of thinking that they other wise would not think about but that students understand and don't think of as work, but as fun! #GEDSB21C#MinecraftEDU
Welcome Kevin, we're always happy to see new faces. Please feel free to share your thoughts, we always encourage new ideas regardless of experience level. It helps broaden the conversations. #MinecraftEDU
A1 when I first introduced Minecraft to some interested faculty it was the #MinecraftEDU club students who guided them through the tutorial world. The students’ excitement and engagement was contagious!
#Minecraftedu@domocorn19 This is Perfect! It's not just about students knowing the game, it's also about Ts seeing a better way to engage and align themselves with Ss.

And to answer Q0, My name is Dominic Goncalves, a Grade 11 student and former gradduate of Lakewood and also min helper and coder of the first iterations of #MinecraftEDU in our school system! #GEDSB21C
This is my FAVE point of all! Learning in any context doesn't need to be a didactic approach. Partners learn eachothers strengths, weaknesses and grow more. #minecraftedu

Q2~ How does bringing students into the training process celebrate critical thinking, communication, and collaboration, and also empower #StudentVoice#MinecraftEdu#GEDSB21C
A1 Getting student involvement in the learning and teaching process makes it more authentic for everyone. Teachers can learn new game vocabulary and strategy from students #MinecraftEDU
A2: #minecraftedu empowers Ss as it shows their voice IS actually heard and they are valued beyond their years! Puts them in the driver seat and allows them to develop communication and collaboration skills key to 21st C jobs and work
Q2: How does bringing students into the training process celebrate critical thinking, communication and collaboration, and also empower #StudentVoice? #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C
There's a saying I live by: "We learn more by teaching others." - Involving Ss in the process allows them to take more agency over their learning, and if forces them to think as Ts (Critically, Collaboratively, Communicatively and Creatively.) #minecraftedu
Bringing students in I think can develop all of these by connecting students together in way that not many things can, video games! The Ss work in groups on something that everyone is motivated to do helps make working together a whole lot easier! #GEDSB21C#MinecraftEDU

Strongly agree Kris, we can learn from each other and challenge each other to take on learning that may be out of our comfort zone #minecraftedu#GEDSB21C
Absolutely I learn most from Ss in #MinecraftEdu they are the instructors and I am the learner! Builds rapport and allows them to relate to us Ts on a different level too!
Such a great term you used there for the Ts side of the process. One of the biggest challenges facing Ts is that of the Comfort Zone. Having Ss support helps Ts get comfortable, and builds the most important element of effective teaching - Relationship! #minecraftedu

A2 effective communication is crucial! These 2nd graders were guiding their teacher to navigate our social studies world for the first time. Challenging for them to not take over, but they see their voice has power #MinecraftEDU
A2: I jumped pickaxe first into working with students on MC maybe six years ago and it was an immersive existential experience that taught me we needed more space and time for projects. They can do this! (I’m late: Los Angeles English Teacher) ⛏#minecraftedu
A2 Students approach problems and challenges in different ways than we do. Allowing them to be involved in the training process shows us new and sometimes better ways to approach a problem #MinecraftEdu
Great to have you Bryan. Love how you talk about an immersive experience - did you find getting in the game helped you see the learning potential #minecraftedu#GEDSB21C
A2: I think bringins Ss in the training process is nothing short of empowerment...it puts them in charge of their own learning. Puts their voices in the forefront; ensures authenticity and relevance. #minecraftedu#gedb21c
#minecraftedu@the_mulc I love the focus you make on Authentic. its a big preaching point for me with #GBL. Letting kids lead Ts in anything GBL helps us ensure authenticity.

A3: The #Minecraft community is already multi-grade, brought together by a love for the game and a community of sharers. If the love of the game and the concept of community is what brings together students in #MinecraftEDU, then learning will come along with it.
So true! I love getting out of #TeacherShoes and joining in on the learning it shows Ss we are people whom are learning everyday too! Teaches Ss that learning is Lifelong and not Stagnant! #minecraftedu
A3 Minecraft is the ultimate in differentiation. Students can contribute what they are capable of and bring their own experiences and skills to the game. #MinecraftEdu

I hosted a great #GirlsCanCode event at @LakewoodDover earlier this year and love seeing divisional Ss working hand in hand side by side and co-creating / working via collaboration and communication brings people into a tighter community too #MinecraftEdu
The connection to coding and the added layer of complexity it brings to the game is a great example of multi-level and multi-grade work. Great connection! #MinecraftEdu

A3: my ideal startup multigrade collaboration would likely be to make worlds/games for each other to play — I’m not sure jumping in with a big age gap on one server works without scaffolding and knowing each other IRL #minecraftedu
A3 That's actually a difficult question. Although grades 5-7 would work great as they are not too far apart in age and in the way they think as well as connecting through games is much easier than in real life which is something even I struggle with#GEDSB21C #MinecraftEDU
Building and developing community is important in learning environments - its great that the love of Minecraft can foster this through clubs and tech groups of all ages #minecraftedu#gedsb21c

I think it would be awesome for HS Ss to gain some community service hours mentoring and working alongside some of our younger primary school kids #collaborating in #MinecraftEdu

Actually a SOLID idea. I like to encourage older students to actually design a GBL game that teaches this Units Concept to eachother, or the next years Ss. This puts them in the Teacher Driver Seat (Learn More by Teaching Others) #minecraftedu
A4: I believe that students can gain confidence in themselves as a learner as we encourage them to lead. This helps build stronger relationships in the classroom #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C
A4 I think they see us as partners in the learning process. It also provides confidence to students when we ask for their input and leadership in areas where they see themselves as experts. #MinecraftEdu
@domocorn19 What are your thoughts on managing a multi age school server. Were you as a grade 8 student able to support younger students? Any learning experiences you could share #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C
A4; I think the relationship changes for the best, as Ss see us a co-learners and eager to hear from them as the experts! Engagement from you possibly gets engagement from them later too #MinecraftEdu
A4: One of the biggest changes is that it opens up more communication between S and T, and I have found that it enables quiet students more confidence to speak up #GEDSB21C#minecraftEDU,
A4 I like this one. It changes dramatically! Ts can see and be taught the ways that Ss think and operate meaning that the students feel like the Ts are actually listening to them which in turns helps with better learning!#GEDSB21C#MinecraftEDU
Ah ha! I know a great library space when I see one ;) @PBJellyGames & I just happen to be presenting at the CONNECT conference on game based learning in the library #minecraftedu#GEDSB21C
A4: I reeeeaaaally like this question! I attended a lecture by one of my professors when I first started exploring #MinecraftEDU about Lacan's theory of the Cemetery of Dead Letters. Teachers don't have all the answers, not even all the questions. Disrupts power hierarchy.
Goodnight #MinecraftEDU superstars! My son is calling me upstairs for a bedtime story. I’ll check back in on the conversation later. Thanks for the great ideas tonight!
Great Answer! Knowledge is no longer a static thing. We need to be open to transitioning and showing our students how to FIND and solve the future riddles. right? #minecraftedu
So true! It's important that we start to share the learning process with our students. They are the ones learning and they deserve a voice in the direction of that learning. That is, however, easier said than done I think. #MinecraftEdu
A4: just today I had a 10th grade student give a prepared talk on the historical influences of Orwell’s 1984 — I sat at the console and typed into Google image search everything he mentioned, then he expanded his talk more — #CHANGESEVERYTHING#minecraftedu
A4: my typical approach with computers and computing in the classroom is to confidently tell the students that I am excited about not knowing what we are going to do together, so let’s start figuring it out! And if you want to lead, please do so at any time! #minecraftedu
Q5: How can we safely and supportively begin to include student’s ideas and expertise in the lesson design process when using #GBL and Minecraft? #MinecraftEDU? #GEDSB21C

I'm loving this chat. I'm not even answering many of the questions, there's so many amazing answers already that I'm in awe again, and as always of this vibrant community! Thanks as well to the #StudentVoice@domocorn19#MinecraftEDU
Absolutely. And if we teach our students that we are the source of information and assessment, what do they do after formal schooling ends? #MinecraftEDU
A4: TBH I learn a lot of #MinecraftEdu from my Ss & it is one of the huge turning point in my classroom where we manage to create a learn-from-each other environment. My Ss didn't afraid to take risk, give their opinion & idea and the most important thing they own their leaning!
Precisely! Look at how Laywers and Doctors Learn, including PhDs, it's not about assessment, it's about solving challenges and thinking. today we can so easily find an answer, but a test and worksheet cannot help us SOLVE an unknown problem. #MinecraftEDU
Q5~ How can we, safely and supportively, begin to include student's ideas and expertise in the lesson design process when using #GLB and Minecraft?
#MinecraftEdu#GEDSB12C
As teachers it is important that we remember what it is like to struggle a learner. As a student it important that we are offered leadership opportunities #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C
Agreed. It involves trust and a certain skill with justifying non-traditional education in the face of test-prep demands. We teachers can also get in the way with being too married to our lesson planning and lesson objectives. #MinecraftEDU
A4: after so many years working in schools and being surefooted, it becomes more exciting to understand the deep game, if you will — and my approach in general is now to structure but not script the classroom #rethinkschool#theory#edchat#edtech#minecraftedu
A5 Scaffolding is the key here. While students have great ideas, we can't expect them to design whole projects at once. Start small and help them learn what works and what doesn't. Expand their role when they are ready. #MinecraftEdu
I think this brings up a Brilliant Point/Question! How do we encourage, rather than require students to be involved and share their voice. #MinecraftEDU Thanks @nayrbgo
A4: my typical approach with computers and computing in the classroom is to confidently tell the students that I am excited about not knowing what we are going to do together, so let’s start figuring it out! And if you want to lead, please do so at any time! #minecraftedu
I think it's important to point out that @domocorn19 found this chat on his own and decided to share his voice. Students given the chance have great ideas and we need to encourage them. #studentvoice#minecraftedu#gedsb21c

@PBJellyGames, @domocorn19, @domocorn19
I teach a computers class where most students do their semester project on a topic I don't understand using software I'm not familiar with. It's awesome! #MinecraftEdu
A5: By including students in the training process we are better able to understand their strengths. They can help develop success criteria #MinecraftEDU#GEDSB21C
It is very much a juggling act but if we find a place to provide #StudentVoice where relevant it really enhances the classroom. We can learn a lot from them #MinecraftEdu
A5: I’m a fan of back channels and discussion boards and private emails to teacher and shared notebook documents to help make the space for students who don’t insist on their voices being heard all day long IRL #minecraftedu
And I think it's important to note that if you joined and hosted more #MinecraftEDU chats, with your expertise Dustin, that he would have found it sooner :D XD hahaha
