My name is Larry, EdTech Coach from NJ. Before we begin, please share a bit about yourself! https://t.co/VxzLv9e8tB
Julie here from Ark. Tech Integration Specialist. Looking forward to tonight's therapy.
Welcome, ! Great to have you with us tonight for
Thea from FL, sped Eng/Reading 10 - 12 trying to mod my high-tech class back to a no-tech classroom.
Hi ! Julie in KS, HS ELA & K-12 tech integration. 1:1 iPads K-12. Excited to chat!
Tosh McGaughy, digital learning specialist from Texas.
Welcome, ! I'd love to hear about your no-tech classroom aspirations.
Welcome, Julie! Sounds like you have your hands full :) So glad you could join us.
Hi everyone, here for awhile. School starts in 2 weeks
Just a room change - no drops, wonky wi-fi ... I'm rediscovering post-its
Welcome, ! Glad you could join us.
Our first question will begin in 1 minute! We will be using the Q/A format for this chat. Q1 is a 2 part question!
Home stretch, right? Thanks for joining us again.
Nothing wrong with post-its AT ALL! :D
. Still love the occasional post-it and big chart paper activity.
A1a: Sure did...It was so good, I can't even remember the name of it now, lol!
A1a: Mainly tools just change/upgrade so fast that tech tutorials & how-tos get obsolete really fast. Hard to stay on top of.
You are so lucky! We started back yesterday!
A1:Yes! Lost access after change in leadership. A challenge to adjust.
A1a: YES! Many times. The most disruptive was when purchased a site, written into our curriculum, and shut it down.
A1a: Yes! I think it's often more of a "it-was-free-but-now-they-are-charging-lots-of-$." I have to move on...
A1b: I had to find a different (though not as engaging) way to teach the same concepts. I'm still not over it. ๐ก
Grade and room change making me feel like I've lost ALL my edtech!!! only half are 1 to 1.
A1b: Found several tools that could meet some of the student needs just not as well. Always ready to modify&adjust.
Been there before. Rough! https://t.co/HjP0ll1YB4
A1a: Yes! I think it's often more of a "it-was-free-but-now-they-are-charging-lots-of-$." I have to move on...
A1 For me it was a change or upgrades to programs (iPad for ex) Improvements doesn't always mean better - Puffin an example
Agree! Keeping up with the latest is always a challenge. https://t.co/rN15TEtFFA
A1a: Mainly tools just change/upgrade so fast that tech tutorials & how-tos get obsolete really fast. Hard to stay on top of.
Yes. Puffin is a lifesaver for those websites who still haven't dropped Flash. https://t.co/tnGd0WN9iZ
A1 For me it was a change or upgrades to programs (iPad for ex) Improvements doesn't always mean better - Puffin an example
A1a- Devices change and age so frequently, I try not to get attached to one. ๐
I always forget the hashtag!! D'oh! https://t.co/V5GcQS2QWw
Yes! I agree. Many things were free, like , then it became too much for classroom use.
Our next question will begin in just 1 minute.
Great philosophy, Heather! Welcome to https://t.co/zUZluLXzHw
A1a- Devices change and age so frequently, I try not to get attached to one. ๐
Exactly! it is important to be a constant learner. Cant rely on a list of tools when it changes often! https://t.co/hFRqj8itj6
A1a: Mainly tools just change/upgrade so fast that tech tutorials & how-tos get obsolete really fast. Hard to stay on top of.
Q2: What was one of your favorite classroom tools when you were a student? Is newer really better? https://t.co/5fIQLFNZ53
A1 When glogster started charging....sad times.
Yes!!!! I adored Glogster and then had to abandon it. Can't suggest paid stuff to my teachers.
I was always puzzled by Glogster.
A2: Oregon Trail, hands down. Taught me everything I know about avoiding dysentery. Newer games are far more engaging.
I believe KidBlog went the paid route too, am I wrong?
A2- My favorite tool was (and will probably always be) a book! ๐
It did.I loved it for my kids.I think you can still get some accounts free, but it didnt help when I taught ELA
A2: Oregon Trail & Carmen Sandiego all the way. 90s kid.
Right! I'm fine with fremium! has amazing free option
How could I forget about Carmen Sandiego?! https://t.co/GnP7KgfzQ1
A2: Oregon Trail & Carmen Sandiego all the way. 90s kid.
. I think Kidblog is now paid.
Our next Q is coming up in 1 minute.
A2 Okay, don't want to give my age away ... but I guess it was the typewriter... No laughing please, but that was my tool
Q3: Remember overhead projectors? What edtech tools have replaced and enhanced their functionality? https://t.co/IIi1ri0gUa
A3: I had one with a roller on it -- would write all day, then have to unroll to erase. PPT has that beat no question
A3: iPads & Apple TVs transformed the classroom for us. Apps like & engage beyond transparencies.
Q3: We have Smartboards, Promethean, Document Cameras, apps on the phone to scan and send
A3: Nearpod! A great way to share info w/Ss plus the real time interactive provides feedback for Ts & Ss
I remember those! Such innovation. https://t.co/cbmDA1iZ4e
A3: I had one with a roller on it -- would write all day, then have to unroll to erase. PPT has that beat no question
A2: everything I ever needed was in my Lisa Frank trapper keeper. Along with my smecils (scented pencils)
A3 LOVE the overhead projector! Elmo is a current replacement.
A3: I held onto my Vis-a-Vis pens for awhile. Now, I love iPad with Refelector2 for portable document camera.
I used to envy kids that had those. My mom would NOT buy me either!
I remember trapper keepers, but not smencils. Sounds terrific. https://t.co/7JGcvjyFH4
A2: everything I ever needed was in my Lisa Frank trapper keeper. Along with my smecils (scented pencils)
A3: Like remember when a scanner was such a big deal? Now phone + , click, send. Fits in your purse. Amaze.
I still had one hanging out in my room a couple of years ago. :)
A3 iPad, document camera and the plain ole cell phone
YES! Scannable ROCKS! https://t.co/y3OMbktlVq
A3: Like remember when a scanner was such a big deal? Now phone + , click, send. Fits in your purse. Amaze.
Was teaching w/overhead one day. Girl next to it had a HUGE head louse jump onto the projector. I felt awful for the girl.
Ahhh.....trapper keepers......
Our next question will begin in 1 minute.
Now I use my quick scanner all the time. I hate all the papers! I scan & toss! https://t.co/3IycXzflGV
A3: Like remember when a scanner was such a big deal? Now phone + , click, send. Fits in your purse. Amaze.
Wow! The things teachers see. And can't unsee for that matter, right? https://t.co/AlTPbgVAYo
Was teaching w/overhead one day. Girl next to it had a HUGE head louse jump onto the projector. I felt awful for the girl.
My district did too, only to find that we can use the glass for hands-on activity in STEM.
I still have mine.....because I don't trust tech....
Q4: Let's discuss Scantrons: What tech tools have replaced and enhanced their functionality? https://t.co/WxhWSEsXCg
No way to smooth that one over, either.
S, I took a typing class myself back in the late 80s.
being able to scan a paper AND make it editable! That was hi tech
A4: ZIPGRADE!!! Saved my life when I taught ap psy!
Yep. A teacher grabbed one of them on its way out the door. I don't either. That's why I bring a book.
A4: Excited to start using Forms quizzes. Other options are , , and for low tech rooms.
Q4: I remember the first time I saw the video for and was floored
A4:Scantron, replaced with Quizzez, Quizlet, Kahoot, GoFormative, Socrative, PollEverywhere...I'm sure there are more
Me too and Ss wonder how I can type so fast.
Hadn't heard of before. I'll have to check it out! https://t.co/IIoi2umHzi
Q4: I remember the first time I saw the video for and was floored
Glad I saved the transparencies.
A4: All in Learning, Zipgrade, etc.
The rigor in multiple choice is in the choices! Make 'em think before they choose whatever tool you use.
The typing teacher threatened to make my type on a manual one. It forced me to stop looking at the keys.
I am still at 36 wpm. LoL!
Back to the overheads...if you're getting rid of them, be sure to give them to a . They can be taken apart
I'm giving forms quizzes a go tomorrow with a short quiz on procedures. I'm glad they added it
Ah, the good ol' days, brings back fond memories https://t.co/QC4vPQuEym
The typing teacher threatened to make my type on a manual one. It forced me to stop looking at the keys.
Ha! I still have one in my classroom.
is pretty awesome too! I'm trying forms quiz with some classes; others Kahoot.
Our next question will begin in 1 minute.
Also great for K classes and their light tables among other things ... Old tool new purpose https://t.co/3fd5m1wuRb
Back to the overheads...if you're getting rid of them, be sure to give them to a . They can be taken apart
My teacher covered our hands with paper and dared us to move it, lol
A5: For me, I'm thinking SmartBoards won't last. Too teacher/lecture-centric. Copy machines will probably fade away, too.
It's where my district just wasted money. We had some, created maker space, and tossed overheads https://t.co/jnfKQd0ZIy
Back to the overheads...if you're getting rid of them, be sure to give them to a . They can be taken apart
A5: what might not exist in 3-5 yrs? I don't think my imagination is that strong this late in the day. :-)
A5: Smart boards, doc cameras, email (jk I wish)
I'm loving the info about overheads
I have a Smartboard on a chalkboard. LOL An Elmo attached.
A5 maybe no more lockers with traditional locks. Maybe the kids will have a QR code to unlock.
A5: hopefully we can find out a way to eliminate traditional hall passes and sign outs!!
A5: tech for tech's sake & teachers who tech because the Plan says they have to do SOMETHING. Does that count?
Heather's on FIRE! What great answers!!
District would have to allow BYOD. I wonder if the movement will open up a bit more... https://t.co/2PZ4nM5RtC
A5 maybe no more lockers with traditional locks. Maybe the kids will have a QR code to unlock.
I'll allow it!:D https://t.co/5dtz2N0Rdn
A5: tech for tech's sake & teachers who tech because the Plan says they have to do SOMETHING. Does that count?
Our FINAL QUESTION of the evening is coming up in 1 minute!
A5: after a day of helping freshmen reset district passwords, I predict that passwords & single sign-on options will evolve
We can only hope! https://t.co/dKg4tvn7bX
A5: after a day of helping freshmen reset district passwords, I predict that passwords & single sign-on options will evolve
A5:Maker spaces will be obsolete. As classrooms make "making" the norm there will be no need for reserving a specific "space"
A5: Classroom phones and analog clocks may not exist in classrooms in 5 years.
We have BYOD at our board, like the idea
Single sign on is like the best thing ever. I feel your pain, lol https://t.co/jxVbys1WW6
A5: after a day of helping freshmen reset district passwords, I predict that passwords & single sign-on options will evolve
I'm thinking more along the lines of all the lockers having a scanner. Kind of like newer cars... https://t.co/lpJlQFXHw0
District would have to allow BYOD. I wonder if the movement will open up a bit more... https://t.co/2PZ4nM5RtC
A5 maybe no more lockers with traditional locks. Maybe the kids will have a QR code to unlock.
GREAT answer, ! I would love to see "making" become the norm.
A6: nothing you hate is going to last forever! Wait a minute, and you'll be learning something new.
Good point! Edtech isn't about the tech at all; it's about reaching kids by any means necessary https://t.co/ENGYPaHaAI
A5: tech for tech's sake & teachers who tech because the Plan says they have to do SOMETHING. Does that count?
A6: Helps focus our brains on growth and learning. Allows the Ss to lead others and view Ts as learners.
wow! I've never seen anything like that before!
So you're saying imagination won't exist in 3-5 years? Perhaps you're on to something .
A6 Positives, if available 2 all Ss, it provides inclusivity 4 many of r students who need help, only thing is trying 2keep up
A6: students learn to learn & adapt to change. Skills that will serve them well in many of life's experiences
A6 The opportunity to chat with you fabulous tweeps while running football and FFA activity
A6: you will never get bored and you will never "know it all". You'll never have a reason to stop learning
4th year in, super, duper rural school. Same yr my boiler/heater/thing blew hot oil & steam all over room
A6It forces humility between Ts, Ss, & families;when tech changes, we all start over from square one๐ https://t.co/8Z0oJQk58J
A6: it helps Ts & Ss learn skills rather than products. Helps us focus on what's actually important rather than "features"
A6: Fast paced technology means we can all muck around in it and even though it might get messy, we learn & grow in many ways
A6: Fast-paced means that there is always something new that complements different teaching styles and student needs.
nightmares, y'all. . Hub is looking at me like I've lost it.
Lag, internal server errors, keyboards, printers .... :)
A6: Nothing stays the same.
holy heat stroke! One time I blew sparks from the outlet trying to make coffee from the Keurig in our classroom
not the best hot oil treatment.
Ss r way ahead of us, born w/tech in their hands, don't know anything else Okay, showing my age again https://t.co/epaothkXN2
A6It forces humility between Ts, Ss, & families;when tech changes, we all start over from square one๐ https://t.co/8Z0oJQk58J
Thanks for the walk down memory lane and inspiration for future journey!
Tell me about it! Our 3-year-old looks for "storms" using radar app. ๐ณ
Thanks for joining us! It's always a pleasure!
I have found the video feature on Google Hangouts fun. I am thinking about having the kids videopodcasting.
Thanks & ,great chat as always.thanks 2 every1 4 bringing a smile 2 my face &providing a few chuckles
