Mary Havis, superintendent @BerwynSouth100, Berwyn IL. I try to find time to disconnect & spend time with family and friends without distractions - it's a work in progress:) It always helps me to talk through challenges with trusted colleagues. #SuptChat
Hi Everyone, I am the Assistant Superintendent for C&I in SD 45. How I manage my own mental health varies during year depending on how I manage my time. I use prayer/meditation, family time, physical activity and meet with friends and peers for discussion and support. #SuptChat
Rozana, Director of English Learning Services at Chicago Ridge SD 127.5, Coordinator of English Learning Services at Palos 118. I manage my mental health by surrounding myself with family & friends, practicing Bikram, & being healthy. #suptchat#cridgepride
Bonnie Jordan, Executive Director at Philip J Rock Center and School. I work out at Orange Theory Fitness at least 4 times weekly. In addition, I do not take work home. (Sometimes it follows me there!) #suptchat
Adam Smith, Executive Director - Student Services, Mehlville R-9; I manage my own mental health by laughing a lot and spending time with my family and positive people. I think about exercising and fail. #SuptChat
Kim Lohse, Director of Technology in Addison District 4. I take walks at lunch to get out of the office for a little while. I also decompress by listening to music in the car on the way to and from school. A little "me-time" goes a long way! #SuptChat
Good evening #suptchat Mike Lubelfeld, Highland Park-Highwood, Illinois Superintendent of Schools @NSSD112#112Leads I try to manage my mental health by engaging in writing, leadership endeavors, and world travel - and of course by loving my family!
A1: Significant issues related to social emotional learning/mental health in our schools: a lot of our students don't have the SEL skills they need to be successful and healthy, yet. #SuptChat#cridgepride
A1: I wonder if fear drives many of the issues. Are we so afraid of an unknown future that we project this onto our children and students; applying too much pressure to be the best and brightest before they are ready? What is our purpose: Test scores or deep learning? #SuptChat
Q1: Effects of anxiety, depression, & trauma on students AND our staff. One big challenge we face in becoming SEL-savvy is building capacity & self-awareness in ourselves and our teachers so we can be available to help students in need. #suptchat
Greetings #suptchat rockstars! Glenn Robbins, checking in from NJ. Excited about tonight’s chat, as it will certainly continue to help with not only my own SEL, but also for my family, students, and staff!
If you are looking for the questions for tonight’s #suptchat- here you go. Please let us know who you are and where you are from. We will use the Q1 A1 format. Great to have you in the chat!
A1: After a steady decline in tobacco usage in schools, the vaping epidemic has brought addictions back to our bathrooms, buses, and classrooms in force. #suptchat
A1: We struggle to have enough social work support to meet the needs of students. We strive to be proactive in preventing peer issues and supporting students and families, but can end up being reactive to situations that happen at school, at home, or on social media. #SuptChat
#suptchat A1 I see adult and student bullying as well as the lack of counseling staff as the most significant issues related to social emotional learning/mental health in our schools
A1: Teachers are problem solvers and natural helpers, but not equipped to handle the SEL needs of some students. There aren't enough resources for today's need. #suptchat
A1: Adults who possess professional learning and medical expertise in mental health areas able to support structures and strategies that resonate with teachers and staff in hallways and classrooms of a school. Lack of adolescent mental health resources for families. #SuptChat
A1.1- I believe that the stigma attached to mental illness may deter some families from seeking mental health services. We need to continue to raise awareness so that this is not an issue. The climate is slowly improving, but there is a still a lot of work to be done. #SuptChat
Q1+: Also, stopping at being a "Trauma-Informed" school sells Ss short. Helping kids cope & ID'ing strengths from which they can grow & thrive is better--having a Healing-Centered approach is a more empowering, significant step to strive for.
#suptchathttps://t.co/sAycYDwP9s
Excited to be joining this evening- Jennifer Shepard, Asst Supt Ed Svcs, Huntington Beach City SD, CA MH Management for me comes from time with family, friends, my dogs, and as much laughter as possible! #suptchat@educateshepard#SELmatters
A1: Some of the most significant issues related to SEL/mental health issues are surrounding trauma-induced situations and helping Ss access resources- we have to create conditions to KNOW our Ss emotional needs and consistently and proactively support them #SuptChat
A1.2- I also think that early identification of children with high ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences) scores is important. To my knowledge, there is no formal process for this, but kids with high ACES scores are at-risk emotionally, physically, and academically. #SuptChat
A1. SEL is such a broad area, and one of the biggest issues we've encountered in our research is finding SEL regarded as deficit-based, negative, and a "scary" thing to implement in schools. We need to change the perception (cont) that ... #SUPTchat
As we chat tonight if you have resources or suggestions for how to work on SEL and mental health, please share those. I find a lot of great resources @caselorg and @AspenSEAD#suptchat
A1 Q1 Neurocognitive skills are what many of our students are lacking, including social thinking skills, cognitive flexibility skills, attention and working memory skills, and emotion- and self-regulation skills. The issue is changing a mindset. #suptchat
Kristin Humphries, Superindentent of the East Moline School District. I run every morning to clear the cobwebs, say my prayers, and set my my intentions for the day. #SuptChat
Good evening. Datie Priest, Academy Recovery At-Risk Coordinator. I manage my social emotional health by remembering that I can only impact a few things and focusing on self-care...I'm also a caregiver. #suptchat
A1. Lack of support staff. Lack of knowledge of adults (including myself) on best ways to teach students positive coping strategies. Lack of training. It sometimes takes the back seat. #suptchat
Hi. Aubrey and from Alberta 🇨🇦. Really excited to get some new ideas and positive collaborative supe energy! Iam currently leading projects/leadership groups. Was superintendent a long time-consider going back depending on the day 😀I work out, travel and read a lot. #suptchat
Q2: To address: we have PBIS & 2dStep; SSWs & School Counselors conduct class-room lessons about bullying; 1-on-1 interventions. To measure: a student needs survey asks about bullying, stakeholder referrals, monitoring impact of broader interventions. #suptchat
A2:One great anti-bullying effort in our schools is the Bear Down on Bullies @TheRealStaley school wide assembly we hosted for our children. #SuptChat#cridgepride
A2: We were able to use systems such as SWIS to provide us information and structures such as PDSA to develop plans for improvement. This process led us to hold bold conversations about ourselves which led us to incorporate student voice around solutions. #SuptChat
So true- and it takes time to build understanding- I think we have to stop some of the test the content work and refocus on a balance with social emotional health #suptchat
A1. I see our schools struggling to meet the mental health needs of our students. Many staff members are counselors, social workers, therapists, and behavior specialist in addition to trying educate. Our challenge is how we can best meet the needs of our Ss #suptchat
A2: We are evolving our MTSS practices to improve Tier one practices & we have character ed programs in each of our buildings. While we have work to do, we have tier 2 and 3 programs to meet the needs of individuals and to support groups of students. #suptchat
#suptchat A1 Schools need to do everything as it is harder for families to get access to mental health care and since we have the relationships and they trust us. It is one of the benefits of community schools.
A2 #suptchat we lead anti-bullying efforts through curriculum, assembly programs, parent education, service learning, staff training -- measure via state reports and per policy 7:180 through staff leadership
A2: District adopted a BOE Policy defining bullying, reporting procedures, investigations, and training/education for staff and students. We have surveyed school climate through our PBIS efforts and this year we are partnering with Panorama Education to survey K-8. #SuptChat
A2: We have a great team of social workers in #sd113a that are leading efforts- and our teaching staff is intentional in really knowing our Ss and talking to Ss and creating safe spaces to report concerns and needs. #SuptChat
A2- We focus on bullying prevention in our classes. Our schools record all incidents in our data management system. Data is reviewed monthly and appropriate interventions are introduced, as needed. Also, we have a bully tip-off form on our website for reporting. #SuptChat
#SuptChat Q1: CA Schools abc school districts have a willingness to build capacity and have caring professionals... CA needs dedicated funding for professional learning and resources to support SEL.
A2 - We have developed student-led teams at the secondary level to give the students a voice and allow them to help guide efforts in bullying. #suptchat
I don't think we talk enough about the social-emotional impact of reading struggles for K–3s.
Research shows that struggling readers experience real stress & troubling side effects.
It's imperative that we improve K–3 reading outcomes.
Study: https://t.co/ciyuQvnRJ7#suptchat
A1-We have allowed SEL to be set in the sideline for years and now the realization of the skills needed to be taught like math and ELA have to be addressed #suptchat
A2: Our jobs are one of being humanistic. I want to inspire the next generation by my current actions of being running with the girls running club or dressed up for halloween with the staff or sitting on the floor reading books to kindergartners. #LeadersMatter#suptchat@CCSD93
A2: We log incidents of bullying to report to the state - more importantly, we have anonymous tip lines for students to report issues of bullying in our schools. #suptchat
A1: If you haven’t watched the documentary, “Won’t you be my neighbor” with Fred Rogers, I highly suggest that you do. Discusses so many key points of SEL that are missing in today’s television/YouTube children shows #suptchat
A2. We’ve implemented PBIS at our ES and MS. Encouraged conversations in classrooms. Have attempted to address issue through digital citizenship lessons as well. However it’s never enough....#suptchat
If you are looking for the questions for tonight’s #suptchat- here you go. Please let us know who you are and where you are from. We will use the Q1 A1 format. Great to have you in the chat!
We had @RachelsChalleng come out to start the year. Created a student club, FOR club for students to focus on kindness as compassion. Their ideas are awesome. They create a shout out Instagram page to focus on positives of S’s in school. #suptchat
A2 we use SWIS to track behavioral data but also have forms to determine to determine has bulky behavior continued and then we use as documentation and tracking #suptchat
A3: Social media/cyber bullying has impacted students and schools because w/ it bullying can occur at any time of the day, not just during the school hours which can hopefully be caught since it leaves a "paper trail". #SuptChat#cridgepride
A3: We have had incidents of cyberbullying—often very challenging to find and address these issues. Students and families can be reluctant to report, so creating pathways that make reporting easier is essential. #suptchat
A3: This is such an ongoing challenge for schools. How do school staffs work proactively around solutions and responsible use of social media? #SuptChat
Q3: We know what platforms are cool based on student social media issues. Snapchat is the worst. Streaks & Snaps are distracting to kids at the least & destructive/harmful at the worst. When they experience bullying online, there is no escape & no filter. #suptchat
A3: Many situations between peers are initiated on social media and often escalate by the time schools can intervene. Focusing on digital citizenship is so important, even with our youngest students. #SuptChat
A2 We had @RachelsChalleng come out to start the year. Created a student club, FOR club for students to focus on kindness as compassion. Their ideas are awesome. They create a shout out Instagram page to focus on positives of S’s in school. #suptchat
A1: Isolation and stigmatization. Those suffering can so often feel alone, and unsure of how exactly to address their issues or where to turn. It can be paralyzingly scary and overwhelming. #SuptChat
A1 @kim_johse4 we established a SEAD team of diverse professionals to support schools with kids with more ACES risk factors. They work to support up trauma sensitive strategies with staff, parents, and students #suptchat
A1.2- I also think that early identification of children with high ACES (Adverse Childhood Experiences) scores is important. To my knowledge, there is no formal process for this, but kids with high ACES scores are at-risk emotionally, physically, and academically. #SuptChat
A3 #suptchat social media is a HUGE problem/challenge in the community I serve - adults have multiple groups, argue at times, share inaccurate information, and create a negative narrative and environment - adult behavior informs child behavior - we MUST teach cyber etiquette
A3: Negatively, student's detachment from mean and hurtful responses and how comfortable society is with posting a pic., typing a comment, or liking a post with no regard for the consequences. Students feel a sense of anonymity even with an identifiable profile. #SuptChat
Q3+: Some real, negative impacts of social media & cyber bullying: suicide attempts & psychosomatic symptoms causing paralysis that are brought on by anxiety related to cyber bullying. #suptchat
A3- Like any other school, we are not free from cyberbullying. Prevention is key, so we incorporate lessons on cyberbullying prevention.
Additionally, we use monitoring software on our Chromebooks to identify issues occurring using district-issued devices. #SuptChat
A3: Upper elementary students discuss stress related to social media use. Sometimes students stress becomes referrals to the counselor where problem solving strategies are discussed so students have better ways to cope with media usage #suptchat
#A1. In addition to the PTSD related emotional and social scars, the lack of resilience in the face of adversity causes some to give up easily...I think this impacts trust, relationships, etc. #suptchat
A3. See 1, Social amplifies teen behavior that is old as time in ways that cause problems for schools since the advent of smartphones and social media platforms. We are trying to reimagine how we do discipline to evolve our practices into more of an MTSS framework #suptchat
A3 part 2 #suptchat We must model appropriate and pro-social usage of social media like through our hashtag #112Leads we must model good behavior and help students navigate in the current world of 24/7 "on" ... we need brain breaks and mindfulness and a return to common sense
A3: Social media always has an impact- on everything! We're trying hard in #sd113a to tell our story of positivity and keep our focus on what our Ss, staff and community are doing well and highlight their efforts every chance we get. There is power in positive stories! #SuptChat
A3: Years ago Leyden created a graduation requirement course called Digital Literacy where we teach students about living in their digital world. We still handle cyber-bullying issues, hopefully as teachable moments for all involved. #suptchat
A3. See 1, Social media amplifies teen behavior that is old as time in ways that cause problems for schools since the advent of smartphones and social media platforms. We are trying to reimagine how we do discipline to evolve our practices into more of an MTSS framework #suptchat
A3: Social media has intensified SEL issues for students..one of our middle schools is innovating by focusing on student engagement and putting cell phones away during the school day. #SuptChat
#suptchat A3 Cyber bullying unfortunately allows for bullying at any time of day. We need to continue to teach kindness and the fact that there are people behind the computer. Don't be a troll!
A3: SM plays a roll in all lives in today’s world. Sadly, students are learning many things from people that vocalize their opinions about life, political views, sports, etc on SM... many are critics who listen/read to respond, instead of having empathetic convos #suptchat
A2: We use an safe schools helpline that allows students and families to anonymously report incidents of bullying, violence, and connects w mental health services 24/7. #suptchat
A3. At some point most students have been impacted. It challenges our admin because of the effort it takes to investigate. I have definitely seen an uptick in “cyber courage” as well - saying things online that would never be said face to face #suptchat
Thanks for sharing that Karen- I believe that some kids who come to school as happy well adjusted children become discouraged when they can’t meet standards for a variety of reasons or show progress- we need to really think about your comment on this #suptchat
A4:We hired Arabic bilingual liaisons to assist with translating including during social work for English Learners who don't yet speak English. This will support our social workers when they identify the types of SEL/mental health supports our ELs need. #suptchat#cridgepride
A4: Building relationships with students and providing specific times for teachers and social workers to meet. Classroom teachers know their students best. They are often the first ones to recognize red flags and reach out to social workers or counselors for support. #suptchat
A4: We are holding bold conversations about these issues and how it affects our students, staff and ourselves. Proud of the brave and honest dialogue #SuptChat
Q4: @sd308 has a district-wide effort to become trauma-informed, Compassionate Schools with a full-fledged SEL effort involving all stakeholders, core curricular connections, & community agency partnerships. One specific effort is #ElyssasMission#suptchat
A4. We do regular universal screenings and follow ups to make sure that students have the support needed with referrals (when appropriate) coming when necessary. #suptchat
A3 we’ve had issues of students putting things out on the various apps. Sad, we encourage and model positive digital foot print. Our FOR group create a Instagram account for positive shoutouts for our kids. #suptchat
A4.1- In our district, we use the DESSA screener to identify any students at-risk in several SEL competencies. Ss identified through the screening process are provided interventions and progress monitored. #SuptChat
A4: Learning opportunities on the effects of trauma, non-violent crisis intervention/verbal de-escalation strategies, suicide awareness & prevention training, social/emotional learning surveys, K-8. Coordination with community mental health supports and resources. #SuptChat
A4 #suptchat Threat Assessment workshops for social work, psychologists & related staff, counseling groups for children, parent outreach, partnership with local police & fire & hospital
A4.2- We also use Signs of Suicide to screen our 7th graders to identify any Ss at-risk for depression, self-injury, or suicide. Identified Ss are provided interventions based on the assessment. We've had a lot of success with this program. #SuptChat
A4: We are quick to respond when students are behaving or communicating in a way that appears risky. We have collaboration with our local mental health center and therapists are able to respond to crises. We also help families with referrals for mental health services. #suptchat
Q2 I noticed that weekend and/or general community friction is a source of bullying. A way I measure is to pay attention to the trends and build better relationships with those involved try and get them to take an active role in desescalating the conflict. #suptchat
A4: Our School Board has invested in human capital when it comes to mental health and SEL. With ~3,500 students, we have a 200:1 ratio of counselors to students and we employee 6 social workers to work with our kids. #suptchat
A4: We have a universal SEL screener for all Ss and we also have a SW at each grade level, grades 6-8 and 2 at each building K-5. We also partner with community organizations to run panels for our Ss about stress, anxiety, bullying and pressures. #SuptChat
You are spot on Mike! I feel SM issues are just as prevalent w adults. Along w cyberetiquette I think w can also model that we don’t have to major in the minor that is often the manufactured outrage that comes w SM #suptchat
A4: Thanks to a few fantastic staff leaders in our district, we created a ZEN Den for staff, students, and stakeholders to use before, during, and after school. It’s open to all subjects. Thanks @CPrice5580@thing_4_art@LisaEgan5th@barrykid1 and others #suptchat
#suptchat A4 We have a fantastic team that has worked for two years to put together a screening tool including nurse visits, tardies, absences, disciplinary referrals and both externalizing and internalizing behaviors. We identify our kiddos and provide Tier 2 and 3 support.
We see more kids struggling w/mental health issues-it’s challenging to provide the support & help needed in our schools-we have exceptional SW’s/ psychs on staff. What are ways to increase the support for kids & families who need it and make it easy for them to access? #suptchat
Absolutely, @pammoran. Research appears to suggest that reading struggles correlate most closely with #sel struggles... kids seem much more OK with being "not a math person." (Not good, but... less #sel impact.)
But I'm sure the issue isn't isolated to literacy.
#suptchat
A4 I’ve seen @Glennr1809 setup of the Zen Den- and I heard from Parkland students a few weeks ago that safe spaces to destress are a must for students of all ages. #suptchat
A5: Our Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) team is working closely with building admin and their teams on determining our baseline needs. We are also working SEL standards into our core curriculum #SuptChat
Our Special Ed director is working with teachers and social work support staff to establish good systems of building SEL skills for students: PBIS, restorative justice, etc. #suptchat#cridgepride
A4. We just completed interviews w/ several agencies that will provide mental health/behavior services within our schools-part of their site based therapeutic programs at no cost to the district - utilizes MA. We’re excited about the partnership/service to our families. #suptchat
A4: Brought in a Mindfulness Coach that is working with a large group of staff over two year time. Ultimate goal is for not only the staff to become certified, but in near future have our students certified to lead courses... #suptchat
A5: We trained all school counselors, nurses, and partner district soc. workers Suicide Awareness Training to support all staff. For 6-12 we utilize health and CHADS Coalition for suicide awareness training. In elementary grades counselors focus on coping skills. #Suptchat
A5- We've incorporated SEL trainings into our regular PD schedule. SEL has been one of our district's major goal areas. We still have some work to do in the area of mental health and suicide awareness, but we've accomplished a lot in the past few years. #SuptChat
A5 #suptchat membership in @CommunityTAD Text-A-Tip 24/7 safe, anonymous help text 224HELP to 844-823-5323 - district SEL committee work with parents, staff, mental health pros and law enforcement
A5 We provide coaching support to every teacher every year. It's focus is teaching efficacy, but we have many @jimknight99 relationship principles in use #suptchat
#suptchat A5 We teach SEL just like reading, math, science and social studies. This means our staff needs the training too. They have such big hearts and need the language and tools to help our kids grow.
Hey #suptchat friends @npolyak and @mikelubelfeld served on the @LifetouchMM a few years ago. I'm going in January to rebuild a school in Juncos, Puerto Rico damaged by Hurricane Maria. We are fundraising for supplies. Please consider helping. https://t.co/DXqTE0dY9h
This is a tough one today. We lost a sophomore student last night. Our teachers were incredible; the crisis team supported Ss with respect and empathy. While we were "prepared," you never are... #suptchat
A5. @valorcollegiate has an incredible model that incorporates SEL into the entire school experience for students & teachers. Faculty members participate in similar SEL activities to the ones they ask students to engage in: https://t.co/iuSg0m7VaJ#SUPTchat
A5 - Staff received trainings on ACES & s/e learning for the last 3 years. Additional trainings for self-care, resilience, & suicide awareness planned, small-group discussions for problem solving. Ss explicitly trained for SEL interventions put forth in the buildings. #suptchat
This helps deepen their understanding of SEL, but also takes them through the range of emotions and experiences that students will face. This immersive system creates a school community that embraces SEL. #SUPTchat
A6: We have built partnerships with Hartgrove Hospital and Bremen Services and we link our families with them based on their needs. #suptchat#cridgepride
Q6: District training for staff has gone well re: #ACES, trauma-informed practice, AND #selfcare. Connections are being made w/ community members through our SEL parent committee & other communication to stakeholders about ongoing SEL efforts.
#suptchat
A6. Our school-based health center provides extra service to students and families, especially those that may otherwise lack resources. There have been remarkable success stories, but like most we are seeing increasing need. #suptchat
You can never EVER be prepared for something like that. No book, no program, no person can. You what you do best; you bring everyone together, you use the room as the “smartest one” and you deploy every resource you have. You then get whatever is needed. #suptchat
A6: We partner with local mental health/counseling agencies to provide support for students during the school day and after school. These partnerships are so beneficial for students and families, as supports can extend through the summer months. #suptchat
A6.2- Our Addison Early Childhood Collaborative has created a partnership guide that lists many resources (mental health & others) available to families and community members. #SuptChat
A6.1- If we aren't healthy, we can't be present for our community! Our Nov. https://t.co/pfua6oIgc4 is focused on wellness. Breakouts include mindfulness w/ @resilientmindco , nutrition w/ @VitaminShoppe) & exercise/yoga classes led by D4 Ts. LMK if you need referrals! #SuptChat
A6 #suptchat It's best when parents, teachers, mental health professionals are united in effort with respect to problem challenge diagnosis and solution focus - many awesome groups have helped with education efforts, one is @CommunityTAD@ksswanson1
A6/a4 We just completed interviews w/ several agencies that will provide mental health/behavior services within our schools-part of their site based therapeutic programs at no cost to the district- utilizes MA.We’re excited about the partnership/service to our families. #suptchat
A1: Student and parent anxiety rooted in a genuine desire for kids to be their best, but having a hard time forgiving themselves when they don't meet their intense expectations. #suptchat
A6 -1 building saw a 37% decrease in behavior referrals compared to the semester the year before after implementation of self-regulation interventions. All students will have access to social-emotional curriculum by end of this school year as tier 1 intervention. #suptchat
A6: Started student led group (SAFE - Student Advocates for Everyone) to discuss changes made as part of the redesign process. We’re interested in hearing what they feel is helpful. The goal is for them to act as student advocates for their peers.
#suptchat
A6. We talked to edleaders about this one, and some of the best stories have come out of districts where schools help parents with their own mental health issues, instead of focusing only on the students. #SUPTchat
A6 -1 building saw a 37% decrease in behavior referrals compared to the semester the year before after implementation of self-regulation interventions. All students will have access to social-emotional curriculum by end of this school year as tier 1 intervention. #suptchat
Thx u. Our school psychologist briefed us this a.m. The crisis team went into immediate support mode. A common, respectful announcement was made. Ts took kids to the library (our hub) to work w/ crisis team members-it went exactly the way it was supposed to go on paper. #suptchat
A4-our school board approved the hiring of a mental health specialist. We’re hopeful that with a trained MHS and informed staff, we can identify the signs of trauma early and intervene frequently. #Suptchat
A6. This could look like offering a space for yoga or meditation or hosting parent nights where people can share stories from their lives as a way of making challenges discussible and deepening their own feelings of belonging in the community. #SUPTchat
Q7: We at PRC have talked about introducing deep breathing for our students with cognitive disabilities to help them calm down. It is a challenge as they are also deaf-blind. #suptchat
A7: @D45Schafer has made mindfulness one of their strategic goals. Complex SMART goal developed from bold conversations. The team developed actionable strategies that prioritizes a powerful learning environment at the center of all they do! Excellent example! #SuptChat
A2: We monitor any student aggression via our schoolwide discipline process. Students and parents have the ability to report via our district and school website. Our teachers are very skilled at keeping a pulse on the ongoing issues as well. #suptchat
A7. 1 of our foundational adult learning courses is cooperative learning, which has many elements that help w/ relationships & conflict resolution. We see it as tier 1 for Ss and staff. Many of our Tt do great work with neuroscience understanding 4 Ss and metacognition. #suptchat
New Jersey has a program called @2NDFloorNJ — it’s a 24/7 hotline for anyone in crisis — but specifically caters to all teens in NJ. It’s important to let our student populations know that help is literally at your fingertips. #njed#suptchat

A5: As leaders, we need to help our staff and students realize that we are their to uplift, support, and serve them. Too often people are beaten down by mandates, policies, life, former bosses who gave them PTSD, etc.. Trust, respect, work alongside each other to go forward #suptchat

Q8: I highly recommend Panorama SEL Education as a partner. They have norm referenced SEL online surveys for grades 3-12 based on 23 social emotional learning competencies!! https://t.co/n7BFzuKU23@PanoramaEd#SuptChat
A7- We don't do anything formal with mindfulness yet, but we are excited to be offering a session on it at our upcoming November Institute Day. #SuptChat
#suptchat A6 My Superintendent's Advisory Group (30 amazing kids in grades 6-8) have chosen mental health as their charge for the year. Kids leading the change!
A3: The student impact is minimal, since we're a K-6 school. We get one or two cyber issues a year. Our parent community is very civil as well, we do not receive too much negative feedback via social media. #suptchat
A7: Guidance lessons given each month to each homeroom. Lessons begin w mindfulness practice. We also have 14 teachers piloting calm corners, zones of regulation, brain science lessons. Pilot teachers have been participating in mindfulness practices in their classrooms. #suptchat
#Suptchat A6: Once you realize all student behaviors are a form of communications, that sea change will open up for some powerful community cultural shifts! But, we adults must allow our students to come up with the right questions. Total cost=Our time! #Empowerment
#Suptchat A7: The best way for school leaders to counter amygdala hijack amongst their staff; approach each meeting therapeutically. It keeps them present, healthy, and prime for learning! It's also neat to see the Supt lead a grounding exercise! @BDPerry
A4: This is ongoing. We're lucky to have a district that places SEL as a central piece of our instruction. This places SEL and mental health at the fore of our planning and vision. #suptchat
A7) Back in my VP days, we had a #wellness staff day for all staff. Local nutritionists, Accupuncturist’s, yoga instructors, and even a few masseuses came in and offered their services for free. It was a great day and the staff was beyond grateful. #suptchat
Q8: Please share resources, presenters, or partnerships you are using or have used to support mental health and SEL in your schools/district: #suptchat
A7: There are so many mindful breathing exercises and one that our social workers practice with our students is dragon breathing. #suptchat#cridgepride
A8- I highly recommend the DESSA screener & Signs of Suicide Program for screening/prevention. We'd be happy to talk to anyone interested in learning more. Also, a big shout-out to @resilientmindco for coming to our Institute Day to teach about mindfulness. #SuptChat
A8: @SuptRoundtable is hosting @sboucek this spring to speak about "Unpacking The Invisible Backpack: Dealing with Suicide."
Superintendents- you do NOT want to miss this powerful presentation on May 17. Sign up today. #SuptChat
A7. Ellen Langer has some great resources around mindfulness in the classroom: https://t.co/oRGDQroaBa Teachers can enact simple mindfulness activities like "scanning" the environment & posing mindful learning questions.

Big thanks to @npolyak@mikelubelfeld and @pammoran for leading this powerful SEL topic for #suptchat this month! I hope everyone is saving these tweets, as the resources are outstanding!
A8: We are fortunate to have a partnership w/ a community health center. Full medical/dental/mental health clinics on each campus through federal funds. #suptchat
A7. Our friends at @valorcollegiate also have great practices around building student self-awareness & mindfulness to help them find their "True North," or sense of being centered and balanced to find your way in life. https://t.co/RugofqDEYO#suptchat
A6: Again, having SEL as a central focus, our teachers have embedded practices to promote SEL - class meetings, direct instruction and an active SEL leadership committee in each building that monitors and provides vision and staff development. #suptchat
It goes without saying, but you have an arsenal of educators, administrators, and everyone in between ready to help you if you (or anyone else for that) needs it. Just say the word. I can’t tell you how grateful I am to people on here and other SM platforms. #suptchat
A7 #suptchat In #112Leads we are looking into Calm Classroom and other Mindfulness options - some PE staff use Yoga and some staff use brain breaks - looking forward to ideas!
A8. We've shared some of their resources already, but we can't help but to sing the praises of @valorcollegiate's standout #SEL model. Check out their school profile to see more strategies and resources we learned from Valor's model: https://t.co/Pmhti43luq#suptchat
A7: This was the topic of our SEL staff development today! We're exploring innovative practices and are sharing resources. It'll be really interesting to see how we move forward with this! There's lots of excitement! #suptchat
A7) If you want to see wellness in action, hit up @Glennr1809 — one of his schools converted an empty classroom into a Zen Den - complete with soft lighting, trickling water, and yoga mats. It was beyond cool to see in person.
Archive tonight’s #suptchat will be shared soon! Thank you for joining the International Chat for superintendents and eduleaders @npolyak@pammoran@jonbartelt
#Suptchat When math scores plummet and school leaders come under community fire (which can lead to an amygdala hijacked leader), our knee jerk reactions often times is to apply to same x10. #ACEs play such a huge role! If we miss this, our Ss are denied a life changing oppty!
It’s even worse when you have some adults / educators / administrators become “keyboard warriors” or try to flex some social media muscles for the purposes of pot stirring and shaming. Your tweet hit the nail on the head. Social media etiquette is essential to model. #suptchat
