Q1: Describe the most successful professional development experience you have ever had. What qualities did it have that made it stand out for you? #MTedchat
A1. For me, it was my #ECET2MS conference last year. I suppose it spoke more to my personal growth rather than professional grown, but it ignited a fire within me to become more politically active. #mtedchat
It's Tuesday! It's #mtedchat night! Our topic tonight was inspired by this amazing blog post written by the one and only @Mr_Olsen_Sayshttps://t.co/zpsW7qwWlz Join us as we talk about Professional Development and How to Improve it for teachers. 8PM MST
Q1: Describe the most successful professional development experience you have ever had. What qualities did it have that made it stand out for you? #MTedchat
A1) The best PD was an MBI session on social emotional learning and bullying...so personal and great storytelling. Yet it changed how I teach #mtedchat
A1: For me it was National Boards because it was high stakes, my choice, relevant to my teaching, and at the right time in my career. Second is a tie #BPSTILT with @caskeyd and FEFE with @NicoleWanago. Both had a PLC element
A1 I think for me it was going through the national board process. AZ had outstanding resources through the @azk12 foundation that helped us look at and analyze the teaching standards and our teaching practices. #mtedchat

I’m so lucky to have had the AZK12 foundation and awesome mentors at my last school. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I have to renew. I’m going to have to call on my #mtedchat crew for support!
I took a 4-week summer institute through the Montana Writing Project at University of Montana. Was my first introduction to becoming a reflective practitioner, & gave me a supportive network & PLC outside of my small rural district. 13 years later, we're still connected #mtedchat

Q2:A recent survey conducted by @montanapbs found that many teachers do not prioritize professional development. Why do you think this is is? #MTedchat
Q2:A recent survey conducted by @montanapbs found that many teachers do not prioritize professional development. Why do you think this is is? #MTedchat
A2: I think because the idea of PD has been convoluted by mandatory offerings by district. I think if it were called learning to perfect your craft their answers would be different. T's care, a lot. But, they are the first to need relevance. #MTedchat

A1: @ASCD Pre-Conference institute with @HeidiHayesJacob@fisher1000@allison_zmuda@mariealcock etc. Upgrading Curriculum. Presented many edtch integration tools/resources.. Provided post-learning work-sessions w/support. Walked out w/portfolio of options to implement #mtedchat
Q1: Describe the most successful professional development experience you have ever had. What qualities did it have that made it stand out for you? #MTedchat
A2 I think time and not feeling like there is an incentive for teachers is what I hear from some about why they don’t do more PD. To a certain extent I do understand. I don’t get paid for the pd I do & do spend money out of pocket for a lot but it’s worth it to me. #mtedchat
A2. I feel teachers do not have enough say about their professional development. I’m some cases, PD is spoon-fed to teachers without much input from those receiving it. Let’s let teachers have control over PD. #mtedchat

Q2: Montana teachers, great people, are immersed in a culture of seat time for re-licensure. Can be like: "I'm here. I did my time." I feel that way sometimes depending on the PD. But there has to be a better way, one with active learning, feedback & reflection. #mtedchat
A2: I believe lack of prioritization is due to lack of personalization in PD. Many systems still use dated stand–and–deliver model, expecting participants to be at same level. If PD meets bldg goals, need to support Ts in how it can also meet personal/professional goals #mtedchat

Tends to be my favorite conference because you can mix up a variety of sessions to meet your needs… Technology, leadership, curriculum, school culture… There are sessions for everyone. I also find they tend to be very interactive #mtedchat

Yes, and also give time & resources that even go beyond building goals. Many teachers have their own professional goals & student goals that need support and encouragement. #teachersmatter#personalizedPD#MTedchat
Jumping in on this one… I think it depends on the teacher. I know one of the biggest things that led me to take on extra professional development outside of the school day was the opportunity to get curriculum pay. New teacher, new parent… Helped a lot #mtedchat
My guess is that a teacher's interest is because of student needs. Both can be important & can be identified by the teacher who is working with her students every day. #MTedchat
Exactly… by taking time to conference w/teachers about those professional goals… You can bridge across to add relevance to what you bring to the school for site-based professional development. More often than not there are common themes that pull everyone together #mtedchat
A3. I’m a principal of a preschool - 12th grade school with approximately 50 teachers. “One size fits all” PD is impossible. I work with my teachers in small groups, allow them to attend off-campus PD, help them build a PD plan. #mtedchat
A3: I am super spoiled here in Billings. I fell into #BPSTILT 8 years ago under @caskeyd and opportunities have blossomed...partly I think becuase of the growth mindset I showed. Hard for me to specify. #MTedchat
Yes, I'm learning that is true as well. I agree that there should be recognition for attending. What do you think of micro credentials? Would they garner interest in your school/district? #mtedchat
A3: District support depends on the year, the leadership, the culture. Like the blog piece says, it all comes back to teaching & leadership. Generally speaking, I've been supported to travel, learn, & share as opportunities have become available. #mtedchat

Greetings #mtedchat. A1: I went to a Google Apps training. Sat no in a Android App Inventor class. That 1 hr training translated to years of instruction and multiple projects.
A3) Unfortunately, there is no money in our district for sending us to PD. If it isn't brought to us, we can't go. We have had writing curriculum training for the past three years. #mtedchat
A3 I’m pretty lucky that I have a principal that supports just about any PD I want to do. We don’t have a big budget for Pd but I have been encouraged to do things locally and am able to take days to do so. #MTedchat
...and there's the point, right? Some might want pay. I want time. A few might want badges or gamified learning. Some will want a guide. Almost all want CHOICE. Everyone needs time to identify needs and explore solutions. Rinse. Repeat. #MTedchat

@cristama, @NVradenburg, @AmandaRapstad
Student needs have to be focus… But there are ways to achieve both. We have to provide autonomy to staff w/expectation that Ss will be provided experiences that increase S achievement. #mtedchat “Fit” is imp w/staffing. Ts are more effective when passionate about what they teach

A3.2: 1 nice development--National Writing Proj bought 16% of contract in 2018/19 so I can travel, lead, & learn. Had weeks this year where I'm teaching in Montana on Mon & Tues, observing classrooms in Missouri on Wed/Thurs & talking writing w/teachers in TN on Sat. #mtedchat
Not a silly questions, many ask this! It depends on the program and how it is recognized by your school but they can all be the same. It's proof of your learning. #mtedchat

A3: I floated the idea of our staff & host a twitter chat specific to the needs of our campus bring the PD to us. Cost effective. Just need to invite the appropriate guest speaker. Diverse learners, special ed, full inclusion, tech integration, PBL. #mtedchat
Q4: Another survey conducted by @montanapbs found that the majority of teachers in the Montana schools we surveyed preferred face to face workshops over all other forms of PD. Do you agree? Why do you think this is? #MTedchat

A3; My district has lots of opportunities for PD, and I can apply for funds to attend PD outside of that, but that money is hard to get. If I want to attend something, I usually find the funds to send myself. #mtedchat
I love this. Conversations are some of the best PD opportunities. A discussion with a couple of thoughtful educators can change so much toward the positive.

A3.3: We can't lose in all of this, in regard to district support, that the Learning Progress Institute named SUSTAINED DURATION as their 7th element of highly-effective PD. Many good Ts choose (when given choice) quick-hit PD bc of seat time culture. Ts can change that #mtedchat
I think some prefer online because of convenience but I think that most teachers are social (I'm a lone goose) and they want to learn what other T's are doing. That makes F2F more positive. We are also so rural that some folks only meet with like T's in F2F PD. #mtedchat

Take a look at this research conducted by The Learning Policy Institute and examine the 7 elements of effective PD in preparation for the final 2 Qs. https://t.co/Oz72SWMCkJ#mtedchat
A4. I agree. I’m a kinesthetic learner. I like to learn, then apply, then be coached. If you ask me to watch a PD video on the computer, I’m likely to turn the video on and go play PlayStation. (Yes, I sound like your students.) #mtedchat

Everywhere! Walmart, Shopko, Verizon, there are more places I can't think of off the top of my head right now too...If I see grant opportunities, I apply for every one! #mtedchat
A4: I prefer at least elements to be face-to-face… Teaching as a human business. There is so much trial & error, revision, re-VISION. It is really nice to sit & talk w/colleagues. I learn more from those side conversations that I often do from presentations themselves #mtedchat

A4) I just learn best from a face to face relationship. If that is not possible though because of funding, a digital/skype option is great so we don't miss out on great speakers and relevant information.#mtedchat
A4: This Q could get me into trouble. I prefer face-to-face PD. But MT is big & rural, & sometimes online PD is the only option. We need to connect, but we need depth in that connection regardless of whether we're face-to-face, online, or blended. #mtedchat
I've always told people when I present that they might learn more from the person sitting next to them than from me and I'm WAY okay with that! #mtedchat

Some of our favorite FREE #personalizedPD is what we call #PatioPD Invite educators to your house (or a local eatery) and share stories, apps, tools, plans, or whatever anybody needs. Put yourself in charge Christine! #MTedchat
A4 this might have something to do with having a lack of knowledge about good online PD. After doing my masters online I’d have said online PD was awful before knowing what else was out there. #mtedchat
A4: I think there is a time and place for both forms of PD. I like face to face because of the hands on aspect, but I have also learned a lot from VLC's! VLC's are still up and coming, that could be why they aren't favored yet. #mtedchat
Q5: The Learning Policy Institute identified 7 elements of effective PD. One of those elements is “Active Learning” How does this fit into your current plans/goals for professional development? #MTedchat
A4.2: Central factors for fundamentally changing professional development seems to be depth & impact. LPI's key elements from their report come from highly-effective models that get to that depth & impact. Online PDalone can lead sometimes lead to shallow surface level #mtedchat

Ha!! Me, in another empty school parking lot… I’m probably on some list somewhere at Central Office. “What is that little Jeep doing here again?? #mtedchat
A5: YES! This! Education is a dynamic field… Professional development should be to. Anything we do in our own professional learning should be applicable in the classroom and/or in the school. Learning by doing increases odds of meaningful/sustainable implementation. #mtedchat

A5: I read professional texts constantly. I have a few people that I read whatever they're reading. I really like online lesson studies where a group of teachers get together across space & distance to teach same lesson simultaneously, then come back together to reflect #mtedchat

A5 I skimmed the section &one thing that stuck out was teachers participating in activities or processes like they’d have their students do. I think if I can put myself in my students position the learning will be a lot more powerful if I know what they’re experiencing #mtedchat
Q6: Another key element of effective PD identified by the Learning Policy Institute is “Sustained Duration” What does this mean to you? Have you experienced this in PD before? Did it have an impact on student learning? #MTedchat
This was why I always tried to write my own piece during writing workshop. Had to do it after school and sometimes I struggled. Always helped me to support Ss during the lesson. #mtedchat

Staff is doing a Daily 5 book study as we build background for implementation and provide some time to get our toes wet. Decided to use @seesaw as our platform. Best decision yet! Love having teachers thoughts anchored to come back to throughout implementation process #mtedchat

It's very cool. Obviously, falls in that "content-oriented" LPI element. I led an online lesson study through NWP with MS/HS teachers. We followed a lesson another teacher-leader created, taught, took pictures over student shoulders of annotating, writing, then shared. #mtedchat

A5: I like "Learning by Doing" because I am far more likely to implement what I am learning, if I have already do it myself. Plus, doesn't everyone love "doing?" Otherwise, I have just get bored and tune it out. #mtedchat
A5) Active learning is why I use twitter. I love learning from so many different perspectives, areas and ages. #mtedchat helps me to continue to learn what my students need!

A6: Sustained duration, to me, means ongoing support throughout learning & implementation process. When you try new strategy or model of inst, there are growing pains and learning curves. Providing time for reflection and revision helps us land on what is most effective #mtedchat

A6 I suppose that sustained duration was one of the things that made going through the national boards so beneficial. There was lots of opportunity for ongoing feedback and conversation about teaching practices and student learning. #mtedchat
A4.4: Here's some screen grabs from that lesson study I was talking about, done on a Google+ platform with teachers involved in a PD study NWP is conducting. #mtedchat
