Welcome to tonight's #edchatie disvcussion on I“What is the language of learning and why do we need to use it more in our reporting?” But as usual, please introduce yourself before we begin
  • fboss Apr 30 @ 3:40 PM EDT
Fred Boss, 2nd level Art teacher currently with @NCCAie andlooking forward to tonight's #edchatie about “What is the language of learning and why do we need to use it more in our reporting?” - if there's anyone out there :-)
  • Stacy_Kenny Apr 30 @ 3:57 PM EDT
Stacy, DP & Geog teacher. Language of learning is the universal language of schools. Skills development, critical thinking, engagement with content, progress & development #edchatie
  • fboss Apr 30 @ 3:58 PM EDT
There's only the two of us online for #edchatie tonight - but I completely agree with your statement on the language of learning for schools

  • clareire Apr 30 @ 4:00 PM EDT
Clare, DP. Useful to link Blooms taxonomy and learning. Also JC key skills. Wondering if anyone has developed policy or procedures around using Lang of learning in reporting #edchatie
  • Stacy_Kenny Apr 30 @ 4:00 PM EDT
Historically what is recorded on report cards isn't always the language of learning. Comments cn be on behaviour, attendance, attitude and not focused on the actual learning & steps to progress #edchatie

#edchatie totally agree....feedback feeding ego rather than learning
    In reply to @Stacy_Kenny
  • fboss Apr 30 @ 4:01 PM EDT
As both you and @Stacy_Kenny are DPs - do you find you have time to lead learning in the school? Does the language of learning kick in at meetings, etc... #edchatie

In that case, check out @dylanwiliam and the video on https://t.co/ARZdOye9zX on @NCCAie website + Focus on Learning booklets for #juniorcycle too #edchatie

So, how can the focus be moved on to the use of the language of learning? #edchatie

What is "the language of learning"? Does it mean jargon like "learning outcomes", "yet to meet expectations"? When it comes to reporting to parents our priority has to be plain English. #edchatie
  • fboss Apr 30 @ 4:08 PM EDT
Agree - and to students too - but how can the focus be maintained on the learning is what we're looking to answer on tonight's #edchatie

Good article on how those who condemn the 'Factory Model of Education' usually don't know what they're talking about https://t.co/WxJtFjIvOm #edchatie

Was at the JCT Mgt day today on this topic....am really hoping to work on this.....was hoping someone w more/deeper experience might be able to share best practice...think Lang of learning comes across in oral feedback, meetings easier than in written reports

#edchatie SLARs are very interesting as they do use the language of learning, but in a focused way by teachers and so allows for teacher professional development too + it's in own subject
    • clareire Apr 30 @ 4:13 PM EDT
Like idea of attending SLAR - I must ask to attend one....

Not as much time as we'd like I'm sure!! Staff engaging in TL21 which is an excellent opportunity for these conversations. I'm planning to attend a SLAR this week to engage in these conversations around student work
      In reply to @fboss, @clareire
  • Stacy_Kenny Apr 30 @ 4:18 PM EDT
Business dept asked me to attend, think it's a great opportunity to see work and have conversations about learning #edchatie

#edchatie again I think the language of learning is evident in class, in written & oral feedback, at parent teacher meetings, in staff room & staff interactions etc etc but I think it’s hard to distill into a comment on a report card
    In reply to @fboss
  • fboss Apr 30 @ 4:22 PM EDT
I think the nearer feedback occurs to the learning then the language of learning is much more powerful and can have a greater effect for the student in helping them to understand where their learning could take them next. #edchatie

#edchatie yes and in some ways with assessment instruments like eportfolio in TY there is richer engagement with the language by students

It's been a quieter but interesting #edchatie discussion tonight as we enter the final famous five minutes on “What is the language of learning and why do we need to use it more in our reporting?”
  • clareire Apr 30 @ 4:27 PM EDT
#edchatie on the why? We need to engage w the language of learning in reporting cause that’s our core business but again on the reporting side...finding a way of moving away from “pleasant student- working well” is a challenge
    In reply to @fboss
  • clareire Apr 30 @ 4:29 PM EDT
#edchatie we have students at all our parent teacher meetings and have recently begun student-teacher meetings - powerful and engaging
    In reply to @Stacy_Kenny, @fboss
  • fboss Apr 30 @ 4:29 PM EDT
Hard to do that when report cards can only hold so much info. Parent Teacher meetings give more time for the focus, but are parents open to understanding this language too? #edchatie
