Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
Welcome to #21stedchat tonight we will be discussing Creativity in the Classroom - What Can I Do To Make Learning More... please join @Edu_Thompson & I now. Please introduce yourselves.
I teach Visual Arts and STEAM in West Mich. #21stedchat - looking forward to sharing creativity in the classroom #k12artchat is also a great resource for this!
“Creativity (C) is a gr8 motivator bc it makes people interested in what they are doing. C gives hope that there can be a worthwhile idea. Creativity gives the possibility of some sort of achievement to everyone. C makes life more fun & more interesting” Edward DeBono #21stedchat
A1: I allow my students to do a 'passion project' on a topic of their choice. They need to research their topic and prepare a presentation of any kind to teach their classmates about their topic. They can do slideshows, powtoons, videos, etc. #21stedchat#sbpdchat
A1: Creativity in the classroom looks like messy hands, empowered students, risk taking, and a bit of chaos. Creativity encourages more than one way to discover and demonstrate understanding. As I tell students "Be Weird. Weird Wins." #21stedchat
Creativity is when students show what they know in a way that makes sense to them. No one learns the same so Ss should be allowed to show what they know on their own terms. #21stedchat
A2: Nneka here coming late to the #21stedchat party! I must admit that some of the best creativity came out the classroom when the tech decided not to work. :-)
A2: I do not believe that you NEED new technology to enhance creativity but it does give students more tools and opportunities to express themselves. #21stedchat#sbpdchat
A2. While I do not think it is absolutely needed to foster creativity, there are so many resources out there that can be utilized in the classroom, it definitely makes fostering creativity easier! #21stedchat#edu5213SBU
A2: Technology is key in my classroom. Using @schoology and @artsonia allows for me to create a flexible online space for students to gather information, post results, and share ideas. I am lucky to have access to a lot of tech in my classroom #21stedchat
A2 Don't need technology but helps students to express themselves in an increasingly technocentric world and gives them further avenues to do so #21stedchat
Yes... but I have found my students love using paper, scissors, etc and mixing things up to make slime. They even asked how they could color their slime. #21stedchat

I really like the discussion forums in @Schoology for students sharing ideas. I also use the updates in that way. Having students comment back questions and answers to each other is another great way to engage. #21stedchat

@fuglefun has a great approach to #transdigital learning. Merging physical and digital spaces for transformative educational experiences. It is important to have both represented in meaningful and engaging ways #21stedchat

I don't like the term "soft skills" because they are hard to master. How to work with others, think differently, and come up with as many resolutions to problems with the limitations of resources are not easy to do, but I think get lumped into that category #21stedchat

I use it as a reference to sketching, cutting and taping. Also include folding. All are these are necessary skills in the prototyping process #21stedchat

A3 Creativity must exist in the classroom or we will likely have far fewer inventors, scientists, authors, and innovators in the future. Also it fosters classroom engagement #21stedchat
A3: Creativity is more important than ever before because of testing #21stedchat - if you want to be truly inspired by creative youth, visit the @artandwriting show regionally and nationally each year - it demonstrates why #artsed matters.
A3: Creativity can exist in the classroom as long as we give students the chance. Focusing on high quality learning experiences is the most important. Students will still succeed on tests and be better learners in the long run. #21stedchat
A3. I believe that creativity is still possible with all the standardized testing. While not ideal to fit squeeze everything in in such a short time, we as teachers can still provide for opportunities that can bring out or enhance creativity #21stedchat#edu5213SBU
A2: I do not believe you need technology to bring creativity in the classroom. It can help to have students research for fun ideas. Hands on activities without strict parameters are where I see the most creativity. #edu5213SBU#21stedchat
A3. Adding creativity and imagination to the schools is important as it builds imagine, inspiration and the love of learning which then correlates to academic achievement. #21stedchat
Jumping in a few min late!
A3: I sure hope so! We need to make sure we provide opportunities for creative thinking. It’s a 21st century skill! #21stedchat
If you are interested in seeing creativity in classrooms, you should check out the work of @twoducks@MelissaPurtee@iansands@missjaybar and others in the TAB and choice-based #artsed community who have totally divergent outcomes in student work #21stedchat

During our 2nd grade Native American SS unit, I have my students use everyday materials (paper, leaves, twigs, etc.) to create teepees or wigwams. They love it! #21stedchat#edu5213SBU

I tried something new in my #STEAM class this year - Have To's and Can Do's - Have To's were teacher directed activities with some options, but similar results. Can Do's were student directed with varied outcomes and results. I did one of each for each letter in STEAM #21stedchat
A5: My classroom is a always busting with new creative opportunities. My goal is to keep showing students they are creative, they are artists, and they can make art that people want to see and experience. #21stedchat
A5. I have only taught 2 yrs so far so I know I still have a ton to learn about teaching, and I am always trying to better my lessons, lesson delivery, and student engagement. So adding more opportunities for creativity is definitely on the agenda! #21stedchat#edu5213SBU
A5: I try to add more creative opportunities to my classroom every year. Networking with colleagues has helped me add more to my creative tool kit. #21stedchat
A5: I want to design a lesson where student re-purpose recyclables into functional items...I just starting planning...we'll see how it goes. #21stedchat
A6. There is always opportunity for creativity and at any age level! Can't wait to do further research on some of the resources/activities suggested tonight! #21stedchat#edu5213SBU
Thanks for joining #21stedchat. Join us next Sunday, 8:00pm EST as we discuss Summer Break: Reflect, Rest, Renew, Restore to Recharge with @dprindle & I.
A6- Technology does not have to be present for students to be creative. We can still be creative and cover the standards through our creativity.

Thanks @dprindle This was my first Twitter chat. Learned about some new resources from others. Also learned that others do value creativity despite challenges of integrating it into the classroom #21stedchat
