  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:38 PM EST
As a follow-up, do you consider robots like Dash & Dot, Sphero, etc. to be "toys" or not? #csk8

A3 #csk8 It is easy to do a fun "memory/pairs" game for little ones with BeeBots.
  • billmarsland Dec 13 @ 8:39 PM EST
A4: I do NOT consider robots like Dash/Dot, BeeBots, Spheros, or Ozobots to be toys. And I encourage teachers not to call them that either #csk8
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:40 PM EST

A4 #csk8 Do robots, blinkytapes, arduinos, and the like count as toys? Don't do CS without 'em!
    In reply to @VisionsByVicky
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:41 PM EST
I don't either but they are also marketed to consumers as toys so can be confusing? #csk8
    In reply to @billmarsland
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:41 PM EST
They're fun to "play" with but are they "toys". #csk8
    In reply to @mlmiller
  • ntavarez89 Dec 13 @ 8:41 PM EST
I'm interested in this thought! #csk8
    In reply to @billmarsland
  • billmarsland Dec 13 @ 8:41 PM EST
It is confusing. I also don't like when people say their students "played" with robots - I'd rather hear that they programmed robots!! #csk8
  • mlmiller Dec 13 @ 8:42 PM EST
#csk8 interesting perspective. why not? Toys are fun. CS is "hard fun." Like learning to SK8-board and flipping a coke bottle.
    In reply to @billmarsland
  • jmiles61 Dec 13 @ 8:42 PM EST
    Nice. Giving me ideas! #csk8
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:42 PM EST

I used to be a music teacher and had the same opinion of classroom instruments - they were not called toys or used as toys #csk8
  • Sheena1010 - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:42 PM EST
#csk8 Silicon Valley chapter of CSTA got a fantastic talk on AI and Mark's Tic-Tac-Toe... You must check it out

A4: Saw some little ones playing with a board game called "Robot Turtles" a little while ago. #csk8
  • billmarsland Dec 13 @ 8:43 PM EST
And, just like in music, it's good to point out that some instruments are sold as toys (dollar store whistles) but I had "real" instruments. Same should be applied for robots #csk8
  • ntavarez89 Dec 13 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4: It required the kids to make a maze and then figure out the instructions on how to get through it. #csk8
  • mlmiller Dec 13 @ 8:43 PM EST
#csk8 I most certainly consider programming to be play.
    In reply to @billmarsland
  • ntavarez89 Dec 13 @ 8:43 PM EST
A4: Good tool to learn sequencing before coding! #csk8
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:44 PM EST
A4: I use Legos to review algorithms and it has an ELA writing tie-in as well. https://t.co/rXF77aOev7 #csk8
  • billmarsland Dec 13 @ 8:44 PM EST
I like the idea of "hard fun" but the idea of toys, to me, implies the wrong sense of "play" - it's more of the passive "play" instead of the actively engaged and learning "play" @VisionsByVicky #csk8
    In reply to @mlmiller, @VisionsByVicky
  • Sheena1010 - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:44 PM EST
They are Educational Toys - popular since parents will buy them. They can definitely be used in the classroom in some ways #csk8
    In reply to @VisionsByVicky, @billmarsland
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:45 PM EST
Yes, Robot Turtles is fun and can be quite complex depending on the maze and usage of the cards. #csk8
    In reply to @ntavarez89
  • ntavarez89 Dec 13 @ 8:45 PM EST
A4: Also saw some students using K'nex as toys to create ships, and cars. #csk8
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A4: I also think Legos can be good to use to emphasize decomposition and modularity. #csk8
  • mlmiller Dec 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
#csk8 Well, we probably agree more than it seems then. Yes, I don't want them to "drive the robots around by remote control" -- if that's what you mean by calling them "toys" -- unless THEY PROGRAMMED THE RC interfaces themselves, at least.
    In reply to @billmarsland, @VisionsByVicky
  • Sheena1010 - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
Agree with Mark here - programming is play, and will be wonderful if our kids always think of it that way. Coding is difficult, but then hard games are more fun than easy ones. #csk8
    In reply to @mlmiller, @billmarsland
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
Yes, no using the remote control capability. Program them. #csk8
    In reply to @mlmiller, @billmarsland
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:47 PM EST
It is "play" and "hard fun" for sure. #csk8
    In reply to @Sheena1010, @mlmiller, @billmarsland
  • billmarsland Dec 13 @ 8:47 PM EST
Oh we definitely agree then! I always want to encourage teachers and students to go beyond just driving robots around a maze! #csk8
    In reply to @mlmiller, @VisionsByVicky
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
Q5: What CS related item are you hoping to “open” (or get funding for) this year? Why this? #csk8
  • Sheena1010 - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
Yes and Legos go well with so many other items - Lego WeDo, or adding them with LEDs and Makey-Makey etc for any maker type stuff #csk8
    In reply to @VisionsByVicky
  • VisionsByVicky - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
Yep, every year when I bring out robots, some kids end up getting them for Christmas or birthdays. :) #csk8

  • mlmiller Dec 13 @ 8:49 PM EST
#csk8 But now I see where Bill was coming from. But many of the kids I have worked with over the years call me "Santa" partly because of my appearance and partly because I always have the most amazing (always programmable) "toys" with me. ;-) It absolutely has to be active play!
    In reply to @Sheena1010, @billmarsland
  • jmiles61 Dec 13 @ 8:50 PM EST
A5 Microbits please!!! I think they are a great start to program then unto ardruino or raspberry pi. #csk8
  • Sheena1010 - Moderator Dec 13 @ 8:50 PM EST
I think when we bring out robots and other toys etc - they are wonderful new exciting add ons to any CS program - a new challenge... may not ok for a whole program, but engaging for some number of classes. #csk8

#csk8 The business of children is play, but play should be about the active construction of knowledge. Passive play may be needed sometimes for a "brain rest," but active play is what we should inspire.

A5: Really hoping for a Parrot Drone! Programmed one the other day and had a blast. I want one of my own. #csk8

We have a cabinet of devices for teachers to check out and use - people call it our "toy closet" and I always have to bite my tongue! #csk8

As long as the "play" is active and learning then toys they are. :) #csk8

  • mlmiller Dec 13 @ 8:54 PM EST
#csk8 A5 may need one of these. Trying to convince myself the "fun" will be hard enough first. It does appear to have 2 sensors and many motors... Jimu in case the picture is fuzzy. $100.

Careful about giving control of the drone to kids - have interesting story of one that was lost in the area by a class! I am not doing those in my classes ! #csk8

They get bored more easily at home than at school. They don't know what to do with them at home a lot of the time. #csk8

Yes I saw this at the STEAM conference this Monday - guess you did too. I like that we can control motors with this easier... am going to get on the list to try, or will just ask you #csk8
