I had an interesting back and forth with my son who said that he got tired of hearing about male genitalia while listening to "Queen". In that moment I imagined if women feel the same way listening to hyper-sexual male rappers #hiphoped
That's modeling introspection AND reflection (and being a great dad) :) Moments like that I think/hope help grow empathy, especially for kids #HipHopEd
I wonder if @NICKIMINAJ is to this generation of girls and young ladies what @LilKim was to a generation of girls and young ladies in the mid 90's #HipHopEd
Haven't heard the whole album so I shouldn't say anything but the Barbie Dreams is not that fire to me...she is learning from Tekashi on how to Troll in this Klout Chasing era #HipHopEd
It was restful, and filled with learning and professional development of MY choosing. Listening to folks and participating in chats like #HipHopEd and #EduColor and #ClearTheAir. So thankful!
Despite her successs, Nicki feels threatened and passionately defends her own identity. A powerful opportunity for educators to dicuss individuality and the notion that there can only be one female emcee. #HipHopEd
I think it depends on the audience, I was with a group of teens on Saturday and they had already rocked with it and it had just came out the previous day #HipHopEd
Mainstream hip hop is littered with male emcees problematically bragging about the amount of women they’ve been with. Nicki’s decision to detail who she wouldn’t be with, and why, was so powerful. #HipHopEd
A1) my initial impression (1st 2 songs)=Dope. After that, I’m with your son, got tired of genitalia stuff. So much talent. Powerful platform. Would love to see her content mature. Empower and inspire the next generation. #HipHopEd

Yeah... seemed like she wanted to show her range as an artist. Can't hate on that, but then boxes herself in trying to be alpha femcee. #HipHopEd@amilcook
It would be interesting to compare how hyper sexual messages are received when they come from women and men. Are they both empowering or cries of insecurities #HipHopEd
There is such a scarcity mentality when it comes to women doing almost anything. Definitely an opportunity to teach students to focus on collaboration - when appropriate - not competition. #HipHopEd
I was sharing for context because you have many people that didn't know that was a re-interpretation of the B.I.G joint. Remember you could be turning 20 this year and would have been born after he died #HipHopEd
Yes! It's hard for me to deconstruct whether she is doing this projection in a "male way" OR a very core HH way since HH is so male-dominated. Thoughts? #HipHopEd
Sadly the only stand out moment for me was EM’s Majesty verse. The rest was trying to hard to move copies but not having a cohesive & coherent vision. I love pushing boundaries, but that wasn’t this. #changemymind#hiphoped
I agree! She's got some great bars but I can't really say I like an entire song because of the hyper-sexual focus of the album. I would like to see her focus more on empowering females rather than trying to tear down males #HipHopEd
my sister Savannah Shange's powerful and beautifully written piece on Minaj: 'A king named Nicki: strategic queerness and the black femmecee' https://t.co/xKPXVotrtB#HipHopEd
Yep -- as with many things in our culture, the spin of the message depends on who the messenger is. Men are assertive, women are aggressive; men raise their voices, women are shrill. Most things that matter seem to be stacked against women. #HipHopEd
I believe that it is an attempt to empower and level the playing field. The issue is that the playing field is toxic but as long as the men were winning, no one wanted to stop the game #HipHopEd

I'm not sure that's a popular opinion. I just read in pitchfork:
'Due to hip-hop’s sexist, one-at-a-time cap on women dominating the genre, this is the first time Nicki has ever released an album with another commercially successful woman also climbing rap’s ranks." #HipHopEd
I think that is the reason why I went to #1
A lot of people just through it was new-age trolling #HipHopEd
Reason for the importance of teaching historical relevance in the hip-hop community

I enjoyed it but I wouldn’t listen repeatedly. Also make me think how the culture praises artist of equivalent stardom like Drake but don’t ask them to grow in their music like people do of Nicki #HipHopEd
This album features @NICKIMINAJ rhyming more than previous albums. There is an anger from the mixtape era that is glammed up because of wealth #hiphoped
You don't think @Drake has evolved or added some variety within his music #HipHopEd I know that there is an unfair expectation that comes when you are one of a few versus one of many
indeed! would love to know the percentage of people who have bought or streamed ‘Barbie Dreams’ who do know the Biggie joint. i’d guess fewer than 20%

Sadly no access. I’d be interested to hear how she’s positioned and positions herself as a “rapper whose critical, strategic performance of queer femininity is inextricably linked to the production and reception of their rhymes.” #hiphoped
Yes, it seems as if the tide is shifting but we always try to stay on top of major releases that could influence how our students and even some teachers view themselves. Hip-Hop is grown now #HipHopEd

Because women suffer from patriarchy, too, and interpret content from the same lens men do. Also: femcee is not a real term. We don't say "women doctors" or "women engineers" so let's stop saying "female rappers". #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/aqObhcJzmz
Just dropped an new EP w/ @rebelyr_ last night called “ Family Ties” that is our great grandmother as the cover we miss you nana. Twitter listen to us be great. Hear Family Ties https://t.co/9tOG25qcxS, a playlist on #SoundCloud.
The image of Queen on the album cover is one that must be analyzed and evaluated. Are our girls queens based on looks, their queendoms of influence or simply because of who they are? #HipHopEd
I wouldn't use it outside of high school or above and preferably college. I would ask the students to present lyrics that they thought represent the relationship norms in their communities and what were their thoughts about them #HipHopEd
I would ask the students to identify the mixed messages and compare that to the mixed messages and or emotions that they feel. Can you authentic while contradicting oneself? #HipHopEd
This is hard. I have seen many nude and partial nude photos that gave me a vibe of female empowerment and the beauty of a woman. This for some reason seems desperate...we are showing it’s based off looks #HipHopEd
"I done fasted and prayed, had to cleanse my body
Abstaining from sex, had to zen my body
I ain't givin', so don't ask, I don't lend my body
Gotta be king status to give men my body" @NICKIMINAJ#HipHopEd
THAT is a great question, and I would guess the most dominant force in why there is a cap. Maybe @NICKIMINAJ is helping to break that, show corporate that just like many men out there, can be many women too. #HipHopEd
#Queen demonstrates @NICKIMINAJ’s evolution as an emcee and showcases how a female rapper can successfully evolve in the industry as an exemplar #HipHopEd
Dunno if it's so much of an evolution, as a going-back-to-her-roots-after-making-all-that-pop-star-paper. More of a savvy navigation. Either way, after spending a lot of energy defending @NICKIMINAJ's raw talent (when she didn't always make it easy), #queen is welcomed. #hiphoped

Because Nicki is a woman, people expect her to automatically make "feminist" decisions. Some of her content is feminist. Some if it is designed for the male gaze. In the end, its ok for her to be a little mixed up b/c we don't expect this kind of perfection from men. #hiphoped
I’d need to spend more time with it but pretty much I’d examine how Nikki’s marketed & markets herself as a critique of capitalism, male gaze, thru questions of longevity, signature flow(s) & content. #hiphoped
