Evening all :) fab but tiring day now looking forward to chatting- discussing this article tonight folks
https://t.co/ukzUMVUZIR
Evening everyone. Half term for me. Just enjoying a glass of red!
Just checking in from snowy New Hope, PA! :) Holiday here today!
Hello you we've had lovely sunshine and a dusting of snow today- still freezing though
just reading it now :) hope you had a nice break
we had a slight sprinkling yesterday. Very cold today though.
Hi how are you all? It's freezing in Scotland today! Sooooo cold!
Was lovely it just went too fast- spent lots of it catching up on sleep!
snowing steadily! Nothing like we had a few weeks ago! :) I love it!! Glad you got dusting- always so pretty!
I wish I had a cozy fire to warm up to!! Cold here as well!
Are you off for a week then? lots of us were off last week and some have this week
Hi Lyndsey how are you? Are you on hols this week in Scotland?
hi I'm good yeah our kids are on holiday but I'm in doing holiday club! Whoo! Today we made marmalade!
we have lots of snow on the hills!
Are you doing that all week? Wow brave, I was dead on my feet!
I feel like I've not been on here for ages been super busy with uni and sortin our move to a lovely new home! Can't wait! 🏠
just till Wednesday then we're all back on Thursday my next holiday is 31st of March for moving!!!! Yay!
I missed last week- totally forgot as hols! When do you move?
it's so busy when you move. We moved in oct. Was going to decorate this week but think I just need to chill!
chilling is good! can't wait until we're all settled in new house at the moment it feels a bit weird that we are moving
It's so good though. I love having more space. Still miss my old house though. Drive past daily and wave!
We're off then too for Easter :) A lovely new home instead of an Easter egg eh? :)
hahah no I'll still be wanting my chocolate egg! Haha
Ok my little gang :) have you seen the 'Reading Readiness' article?
It's very interesting and I agree that it's not good to rush children need to build the gross motor skills first
evening everyone , I have read the article and love love it ... so simple let the children play !
Doing every child a mover training at the moment. Links so clear. So interesting too. Changing practice
Love the bit about 'reading readiness is the result of brain maturation, bodily sensation & movement' NOT test funnily enough!
lots of research on the benefits of play not only for developmental reasons but for future mental health !
did research about proprioceptive sense & found it fascinating- move you learn - being squeezed out of curric though
only criticism is the reference to play and work ... there is no difference for children their play is their work
So how much time do your class get to climb, dig and run?
This is what I'm doing a at the mo.I'm looking at all my kids so closely and really tuning into physical skills
Would agree I also hate that distinction- play is their work!
our children's can choose to be outside all morning if they wish but I would say all our children are outside at least 1hr a day
We've been doing the same and looking at which children need lots more physical opportunity
Not as much climbing if I'm honest. Environment/resources need improving. Running and digging daily.
open door in ey's. when I was working FT, always out , encouraged to explore... h&s determines the climbing :(
Think I am going to do a 'proprioception audit' as I have lots in my class whose FMS are poor
Same with ours- although if they have to wear a full wet suit they tend to stay in! We need more climbing opps!
our physical development monitoring tool useful for breaking down skills and identifying gaps, right back to birth
Our children go to woods once a week where there is plenty of room to climb. Also have a climbing frame in garden
ours are the same they hate wet suits haha!
Think sensible & controlled risk taking essential though. We had a climbing tree, until gardeners accidentally chopped it down!
4yr old that I look after told me that her job was to play when we were discussing different peoples jobs. I liked her viewpoint
Do you think pushing academia too young has a detrimental effect? Article suggests possible learning disorders- thoughts?
Which one do you use? could you share? We use Nfer one for SEND needs & planning for specific gaps/needs
yes absolutely, website has plenty of evidence to suggest a later starting age for "formal" schooling
I think it can be if child is not ready they can also lose interest.
I agree and I like how article talk about learning to read naturally and not being forced-
Absolutely , denying children their years of play based learning is simply deplorable
Hi all! Liked the article. Children do not have the time to play anymore. Learning is rushed and not enjoyable.
pushing children is just an unhappy place for them to be
Supportive family where play, reading & conversation are part of each day- how many of our children have this? It's so key
Yes it's important to build a love for reading not force it from an early age
Agree makes their teachers sad too! Wish our politicians would see that :(
evoking and nurturing the desire and purpose to read before the actual teaching of reading is key
Hi Nicole- I would agree ironically it is this very play that will create your great readers
I wish they would tune into wonderful chats like this
Research by looks at this ! amongst many many other areas!
The prep school I was in was a miserable place unhappy children & adults (no actual QTS)
exactly making it exciting and enchanting! I love reading stories to children making them laugh with work play
yes yes let's ask them to!!!
fostering that love of books is a joy to get involved with - love it
Ok, - help me decide tonight's topic & related reading. Poll open until an hour before tonight's chat!
I want to order a Lycra body sock and make some long elastics for resistance work.
night all dipping out as early start tomorrow and walking dead is on !!!
There is a preoccupation with pushing concrete concepts early in our ed system... Yet we languish in outcomes 😔 x
got any contacts Lyndsey ;)
Oh me too, me too! Such inspirational teachers, our children are lucky to have you all. We need to fight for play
Ok, , help me decide tonight's topic. Poll open until 1 hr before chat starts at 7pm MST!
just makes me sad, such a short valuable window of time wasted
Good night Sharon and thanks for joining us :) ends in 5 mins anyway Thanks for sharing
are these the kids that always pick up a milk carton and it squirts out everywhere?!
I know ;( Yet play and focus on academia later would actually achieve more- why are the powers that be blind to this?
Help choose tonight's topic! https://t.co/eK0YRkYUhn
Ok, , help me decide tonight's topic. Poll open until 1 hr before chat starts at 7pm MST!
now that would be an eye opener for them!
Children may be 'learning' earlier but they lack sufficient social skills which comes from play
Agree worked probationary period then got the hell out! Happy face & squeals of delight is my scene
Me and talked about this once- we should do it! Think they would be brave enough?
