The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is starting a new #prinleaderchat every Sunday at 9:00 pm EST. We will be starting this Sunday October 2. Our schedule is listed on this google spreadsheet https://goo.gl/SI9LVo.
Sorry, apologies in advance. I came down with a really bad cold yesterday and am still under the weather but still expect an awesome #PrinLeaderChat with all of you here.
A1: By TALKING about mental health. Working to end the stigma & talking about the fact that mental health matters! Asking for help is a sign of courage, not weakness. If adults lead the way, the kids will follow. #PrinLeaderChat
A1 We have a Social Work Inter program that places graduate level SW students in our building for the whole school year. We coordinate with local colleges and universities to secure the interns who then have a caseload of students they are responsible for. #PrinLeaderChat

A1: We can begin by creating an environment of discussion and understanding that mental health issues are real, often unseen until they manifest themselves, and have a large impact on the overall educational experience. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: Support them with programs and opportunities. Making connections, talking to people, knowing when something doesn't seem "right," talking about mental health, educating students, staff, and families about mental health and wellness! #PrinLeaderChat
A1 We also start each day by doing a positive in the present activity designed around Shawn Achor’s work from his Happiness Advantage book. #PrinLeaderChat
A1: #PrinLeaderChat
1. Start talking about it.
2. Create a safe place.
3. Have support for all.
4. Make sure teachers know how to help.
5. Recognise that it takes a village.
A1 For two years practiced mindfulness with our students Meeting once a month in large group for mindfulness intro and exercises. This has been so successful our district is investing in a comprehensive mindfulness program for all student, staff, and community #PrinLeaderChat

A2 Half way through school year we made students turn off cell phones during school hours. We started school partners-randomly assigning student partners-sit together at lunch on Mondays-say hello and something nice every day. Change partners monthly #PrinLeaderChat
A2 I think education is key Are we teaching Ss what is appropriate/inappropriate. Are we teaching them where to go and next steps when bullying occurs? #PrinLeaderChat
A2: #PrinLeaderChat
1. Learn what bullying is and what it is not.
2. Establish a safe school climate.
3. Learn how to engage parents.
4. Know about your obligations.
5. Respond when it happens.

Samsung's new Galaxy J2 Pro is intentionally designed to have no way to go online. They say it's for students but I bet a lot of people trying to shake internet and phone addiction will buy this.
A3: would encourage all to check out WatchDOG Dads Program, 1:1 mentoring with community mentors, school-based therapy, most importantly, students must be known (not only their name - their interests, passions, what drives them) in school. #PrinLeaderChat
A3: We have positive relationships with our local healthcare facilities, police officers, and first responders. In addition, we have #FalconsCARE groups that have community connections that connect our students to organizations that are meaningful to them. #PrinLeaderChat
A3 Just recorded an episode with retired Air Force Special Ops @1coreyc - this bonus show releases May 21 and we're doing a FREE webinar on increasing campus safety in June (date TBD). He originally was on Ep 101 https://t.co/mZLUSB5eAQ#PrinLeaderChat

A2: The creation of educational programimg that includes character and cyber etiquette. People bully online because it is easier. Teach strategies to overcome, but also empathy and respect for others. #PrinLeaderChat
A3 Our state (Utah) has developed an anonymous reporting system for crisis situations and for identifying possible bullying issues in schools called Safe UT #PrinLeaderChat
A3 We have a great relationship with our local law enforcement team. Utah also has an app called SafeUtah that allows anyone to report to us anything they are concerned about. They also can report acts of kindness. #PrinLeaderChat
A3 Today during the recording @1coreyc taught me that schools are sound tactically (one entrance, cameras, etc), but need to expand on strategy and operations. The key is to educate staff, students, and community. What to look for and how to respond #PrinLeaderChat
It's essential to involve the whole community in Minneapolis to support families. We are connected to county services and local mental health providers and allow them to come into school to meet with students on site. Limits missing classes! #PrinLeaderChat
A5 My Emergency & Disaster Management page https://t.co/UcpUQJvjs3 has school safety and security resources. Cannot stress enough the importance of making your school campus safe for the students and staff. #edchat#PrinLeaderChat
A3: We always need to partner with local law enforcement, but must not forget community institutions and agencies that support those who suffer from mental health issues. Regular updates on best practices concerning instruction, discipline, & environment are key. #PrinLeaderChat
A4 We hold a a training session with local law enforcement and other safety entities to ensure we are ready to handle all emergency possibilities #PrinLeaderChat
A4 Our PTA led by the amazing @mellyhickey last year did a great job bring in speakers to share what Ps needed to know about their Ss in terms of social media so we could be more aware and protect them #PrinLeaderChat
A4: Our district, @Bville_Schools has created an anonymous phone tip line, ‘See Something, Say Something’ - I have seen these online within several school districts as well. At the end of the day, ‘relationship’ is the most vital tool. #PrinLeaderChat
A4 My SSW and I will be presenting at the MASSP Summer conference on our SSW Intern program. It can be replicated. Happy to share how we coordinate with local colleges and train the interns. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: My friends @morganwright_us & @VFTCoach run a free webinar on how parents can educate themselves and protect their kids. You should definitely connect with these guys and check them out. Solid work. #PrinLeaderChat
A4: I agree 100% with @KipMotta! There is so much value in sharing ideas, seeing how people have implemented ideas, knowing what is happening in other schools and other parts of the country, finding out what works and modifying it to meet your needs...#PrinLeaderChat
