Welcome to #globaledchat! It’s Heather Loewecke moderating for @AsiaSocietyEDU. It’s election season here in the US, so we’re chatting about civics education with guest host @afterschool4all. Please introduce yourself and share one way you were recently civically active.
Hello #globaledchat! I'm Andy Hetherington, a student teacher from Ohio State University, currently placed in a 4th grade classroom. As a matter of fact, talking about civic engagement, I just got home from a protest at Columbus. It was a new experience for me.
Tonight, #globaledchat questions will come from @afterschool4all, so follow them to stay in the loop! Get a sneak peek at the questions here: https://t.co/3nMC9VqIRu. Also, please use the Q1/A1 format and #globaledchat so that everyone can follow the conversation.
Hi! My name is Selena Vlajic and I’m a pre-service teacher in the OSU integrated social studies program for grades 7-12! I was civically active this week by voting! #ssvpln#globaledchat
Hello #globaledchat! I'm Andy Hetherington, a student teacher from Ohio State University, currently placed in a 4th grade classroom. As a matter of fact, talking about civic engagement, I just got home from a protest at Columbus. It was a new experience for me.
Q1: Civics education includes learning about government structures, opportunities to develop responsible citizenship skills, and the promotion of civic dispositions. What civics knowledge, skills, and dispositions are most important to cultivate? Why? #globaledchat
A1: Civics knowledge, skills & dispositions = interrelated, therefore each important. But at a basic level, a sense of curiosity & a sense of civic responsibility are foundational to civic engagement. #globaledchat
Welcome @Ms_Vlajic ! Glad to hear you voted. Not everyone does in the mid-terms. I bet you're excited to teach your social studies Ss about #civics! #globaledchat
Hi! My name is Selena Vlajic and I’m a pre-service teacher in the OSU integrated social studies program for grades 7-12! I was civically active this week by voting! #ssvpln#globaledchat
Hi everyone! Im Kathleen Burkinshaw in Chatlotte,NC. I'm an author and my MG hisfic The Last Cherry Blossom is based on events in my mom's life and surviving the atomic bombing in Hiroshima at 12 yrs old🌸 #GlobalEdchat
A1: Based on my limited experience so far, I feel that schools do a good job covering the way that government works. That said, more time needs to be spent on ways that students will be able to engage with those systems. Voting is a fundamental... (1/2) #osussmce#globaledchat
A1: It's important to develop empathy, ethical decision-making skills, & agency. Being confident sharing views & standing up for self + caring about the welfare of others = positive community change for the betterment of all. #globaledchat
I think that the most important knowledge/skills for students to start cultivating early is getting the know how on what to look for when hearing or reading about news Especially in our current climate, people need to fact check what is being said to them! #globaledchat#osussmce
Yes, absolutely! I teach government this year and my students are very opinionated and were actively tracking the election so we had a lot to talk about this week! #ssvpln#globaledchat

Q2: Several US organizations agree there are 10 proven practices for civics education. Which of these practices do you implement with students? How? Which one do you want to try with students? #globaledchat
A2: In my social studies methods course, we have talked at length about helping develop students' media literacy skills, especially when it comes to the news. Just the other day I was working on a lesson plan for a jigsaw activity on those lines. #osussmce#globaledchat
I think that the most important knowledge/skills for students to start cultivating early is getting the know how on what to look for when hearing or reading about news Especially in our current climate, people need to fact check what is being said to them! #globaledchat#osussmce
A2: Ex: students in @YMCA of Port Angeles program debate current events, learn how to be a smart consumer of information, & take part in a model state legislature at WA state’s capitol. #globaledchathttps://t.co/pWLlJLaiL1
A2: As a student teacher, I've yet to get truly in-depth in many of these, however I'd love to try having more honest open discussions with students about current events, since there is always something to talk about! #globaledchat#osussmce
A2: I'm a BIG proponent of #SEL and believe it can improve health, reduce conflict, & increase interpersonal awareness. I also love #ActionCivics which increases Ss' understanding of rights & responsibilities thru projects that improve local or global conditions. #globaledchat
A2 - the most important thing they need to know is the difference between rights and duties as citizens. They have to look after the rights they have conquered and/or fight for what still needs to be changed in their society. #globaledchat
A2: It’s important to have our students engage in discussions about current events but also helping them understand how the current events relate to their lives. I love having my students debate. #Globaledchat
A2: As a student teacher, I've yet to get truly in-depth in many of these, however I'd love to try having more honest open discussions with students about current events, since there is always something to talk about! #globaledchat#osussmce
A1: While it’s hard to narrow down what is most important, I think teaching deep listening skills is vital in teaching civics. While it’s important for students to cultivate their own opinions they also need to learn how to understand multiple viewpoints #globaledchat#ssvpln
#globaledchat A2 We have brought in our Indiana State Senator Brian Buchanan & our 2 Indiana US Senators Todd Young & Joe Donnelly to speak to our students. Gives Ss the opportunity to ask their elected officials questions and learn about the legislative process.
A1. Active citizens. As a SS teacher it’s important to teach students the history and structure of our government in order for them to actively participate in the government & create the change they want to see. #ssvpln#globaledchat
I'm with you on that, @stephwurking. I think we often think about our rights and not our responsibilities. It drives me crazy when people don't vote or when they complain about jury duty, for example. How can we change this? #globaledchat
A2 - the most important thing they need to know is the difference between rights and duties as citizens. They have to look after the rights they have conquered and/or fight for what still needs to be changed in their society. #globaledchat
We have flexible scheduling so a formal stugo has been hard. We tried it, but we work with a high at-risk non-traditional S pop. We also have nontraditional drop-in classes so we never have the same group twice! #globaledchat
A3: I haven't had a chance to teach an original lesson on civics engagement yet, but when it comes to sources, I think it's important to remember that 'neutral' and 'high quality' are not the same. Having a variety of high-quality perspectives... (1/2) #osussmce#globaledchat
A3: Our new issue brief created w/ @AsiaSocietyEDU "Promoting Civic Engagement Through Afterschool Programs" is a resource for the afterschool field to inspire youth to engage their communities & be civically minded. #globaledchathttps://t.co/PeeuJUzr18
A2: It’s important to have our students engage in discussions about current events but also helping them understand how the current events relate to their lives. I love having my students debate. #Globaledchat
A3: My updated civics blog goes into depth about the current state of #CivicsEducation & engagement in the US. It's also chock full of teaching ideas and resources at the end! Take a look: https://t.co/X3tkvlBY99#globaledchat
A2: Media Literacy all the way! This was my first lesson through my program at OSU and I found that using frameworks like M.I.T.S really helps break down different sensory perceptions so that students can analyze media and be critical of how it is used #globaledchat#ssvpln
A3: We also have spotlighted 5 programs strengthening student engagement, giving a look at a typical day for students, program characteristics, and program outcomes. #globaledchathttps://t.co/K0UtU6mHW8
A1: Well, you’ve got to love Asia Society! #Globaledchat I try to also tie in reading passages to other cultures, scientific information, etc. We Skype with friends in other parts of the world, I ask students who have immigrated to share some of their culture if comfortable
A4: We use @icivics quite a bit as a supplement along w/ currrnt news. We also look at ours & our Ss social identities & how those tie into the lens of civics. #globaledchat
This is powerful! Do Ss come up with some good questions? Are they rec'd well? Do tell @ToddShriver! I am so curious about how/if these polished politicians get real with the youth. #globaledchat
#globaledchat A2 We have brought in our Indiana State Senator Brian Buchanan & our 2 Indiana US Senators Todd Young & Joe Donnelly to speak to our students. Gives Ss the opportunity to ask their elected officials questions and learn about the legislative process.
A3:In one of my field placements, we had students do their own research of primary sources from various people/groups during the trans-Atlantic slave trade and end it with a debate over who was guilty/not guilty. It was fun to see students imitate lawyers! #globaledchat#osussmce
It's hard to learn! I had only one semester of govt in high school, which was whoafully inadequate. I am still/always looking things up about our system! How do you make it fun @munadualeh#globaledchat
A1. Active citizens. As a SS teacher it’s important to teach students the history and structure of our government in order for them to actively participate in the government & create the change they want to see. #ssvpln#globaledchat
A3: My new favorite resource is "No Citizen Left Behind" by professor & former secondary teacher @meiralevinson. I am learning a ton about the #CivicEmpowermentGap. Let's enfranchise ALL young people to be civically engaged! #globaledchat
Hi, joining late from Connecticut USA. Canvassed for our state candidates in the days immediately before the #MidtermElection and did some phone banking in the final hours of #ElectionDay. #GlobalEdChat

@hloewecke, @AsiaSocietyEDU, @afterschool4all
Yes. It was a great civil discussion. We work with the students to research to build questions. They answered the questions. It made learning about government relevant to the students. #globaledchat
A4: To start, I think we should frank about the importance of civic responsibility. The decisions that governments make can make or break lives, and students need to understand that, through civic engagement, they are responsible for their government. #osussmce#globaledchat
A3: While I haven’t had much instruction time with civics, in my gov classes students like to have opportunities to practice what they’re learning, so I’d love to do a simulation of sorts and have students come up with projects in their own communities #ssvpln#globaledchat
A3: Resources supported by @McCormick_Fdn and @MikvaChallenge are outstanding. Finding mediation and conflict resolution techniques extremely valuable these days. #globaledchat
A4: Students in the program reflect on & discuss topics such as implicit bias, privilege, oppression, & the history of the civil rights movement to better understand & recognize the effects of systems & structures on their lives. (2/2)#globaledchat
A3. Action Civics! Our current political environment has created tension and extreme emotion in our nation. Action Civics promotes civic engagement and with this we can give students the tools they need to voice their truths and fight for their rights #ssvpln#globaledchat
A key disposition is habit. Around election time, there shouldn’t have to be campaigns telling people to vote—and then it’s considered extraordinary if more than 60% do so. It should be ingrained as a basic right and responsibility. #GlobalEdChat A1
Q1: Civics education includes learning about government structures, opportunities to develop responsible citizenship skills, and the promotion of civic dispositions. What civics knowledge, skills, and dispositions are most important to cultivate? Why? #globaledchat
A4: Critical for Ss to understand that civic responsibility begins with voting and protest but is about discovering the power of ordinary people to impact decision makers and take direct action in ones community. #globaledchat

#globaledchat A4 We are able to take a group of students each year to the White County Lincoln Day Dinner. Students get to sit up front and meet with local, state leaders and candidates. Last few years our students have met VP Mike Pence, Governor Eric Holcomb & Senator Young.
A4: A lot can be accomplished through political processes but even more can be accomplished when people find ways around traditional modes of decision making. #globaledchat
A4: To start I think you find out which issues students care about and give them a strong foundation in the workings of government. Also, maybe plan a field trip or experience that you can navigate together, so students can see what’s possible #ssvpln#globaledchat
Q5: Where have you seen youth take the initiative to be civically engaged? Share some examples of when your students took what they learned about civic engagement into their communities. #globaledchat
Totally, @sethbrady9! I understand that the young adult vote can actually change the outcomes of elections in the US, however, we never speak their language or include them in campaigns. Others feel completely removed from our system. Let's change this! #globaledchat
A4: Critical for Ss to understand that civic responsibility begins with voting and protest but is about discovering the power of ordinary people to impact decision makers and take direct action in ones community. #globaledchat
A5: I'm just a student-teacher, so I haven't had any chances to see this yet. I have heard second-hand about students who form proposals for their school's policies, which sometimes go right to the principal. It's a good way to model civic engagement. #osussmce#globaledchat
A3. Action Civics! Our current political environment has created tension and extreme emotion in our nation. Action Civics promotes civic engagement and with this we can give students the tools they need to voice their truths and fight for their rights #ssvpln#globaledchat
A5: Girls in the program use digital cameras to capture barriers to health in their neighborhoods & have presented solutions to issues identified to audiences such as the city mayor. (2/2) #globaledchat
- https://t.co/DqQ9YAWJTR
A4: The answer to civic action is in the way we teach Ss to ask questions—It is critical to frame inquiry questions in ways that are actionable and incorporate globally relevant issues. Starting with actionability as a must makes action a must! #globaledchat
A2: Media Literacy all the way! This was my first lesson through my program at OSU and I found that using frameworks like M.I.T.S really helps break down different sensory perceptions so that students can analyze media and be critical of how it is used #globaledchat#ssvpln
We used this video from PBS to teach students about the Native America who created a democracy 500 years before the United States. The Founding Fathers would later integrate key ideas from their government into the Constitution. https://t.co/sWHbfc3iLK#globaledchat#ssvpln
A5: #globaledchat#osussmce I remember at a placement, we had students doing a civic duty studies type class during one of their core periods. One that seemed to have the most steam was one that had students keeping the school green. They also learned the importance of recycling
A5: Our Ss have the opp to do an afterschool program called Youth Action which is a part of Dignity in Schools. We work with a community org to help Ss advocate for breaking up the school-to-prison pipeline #GlobalEdchat
A5: I'm just a student-teacher, so I haven't had any chances to see this yet. I have heard second-hand about students who form proposals for their school's policies, which sometimes go right to the principal. It's a good way to model civic engagement. #osussmce#globaledchat
So late - Jessica from @PenPalschools reporting from Georgia at a conference hanging with some great principals! Excited to follow this conversation! #globaledchat
#GlobalEdChat A5 One of the items I required in my government class was for students to attend one school board meeting or town board meeting. Important for Ss to see government at the local level. They were amazed to see and understand how a school board operated.
A5: As a student teacher I haven’t seen too much of this yet, but at a previous observation students were upset about conditions at their school and wrote out proposals in the classroom for how they would fix it #ssvpln#globaledchat
Ss complete @ILGlobalScholar must ask an actionable question rooted in a global context & then take action to effect change—this has resulted in incredible civic action - spreading awareness of labor unions in Bangladesh, a white paper on China’s disabilities...#globaledchat
A4: The answer to civic action is in the way we teach Ss to ask questions—It is critical to frame inquiry questions in ways that are actionable and incorporate globally relevant issues. Starting with actionability as a must makes action a must! #globaledchat
A6: At Alternatives, Inc. students in the program have the opportunity to become youth ambassadors, learn how to advocate for education & discuss the value of quality afterschool programs with local policy makers. #globaledchat
- https://t.co/JS5XTHaMUK
A6: In some of my classes, we have discussed ways of having students have a role in deciding what classroom strategies work best for them. This helps design the classroom to best fit students, but maybe it could also help model community engagement. #osussmce#globaledchat
A5: ...A choose your own adventure cane deployed in Sierra Leone classroom to teach about Ebola risk, a 2 hour conversation with a legislative leader on Health care policy influenced by research of Japan&Canada. All Ss! #globaledchat
A6: I initiated a leadership team in our 5th grade with 2 reps from each class as the Senate would have. They addressed school-side issues with our principal and learned about leadership skills. #globaledchat

A6: #globaledchat#osussmce I would like to try and introduce different types of role-playing scenarios for students about ambiguous scenarios as to what may be right or wrong. Of course, these may need to be carried out cautiously as those unprepared could cause headaches.
So late - Jessica from @PenPalschools reporting from Georgia at a conference hanging with some great principals! Excited to follow this conversation! #globaledchat
#globaledchat A6 We had a discussion last year with a class from Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽 over current issues. Ss formulated questions and answered. Ss learned to agree to disagree with their peers. Interesting to see how issues/ideas differ between countries.
A4. I think the first step is to get students interested & that’s not hard! Legislation effects the lives of everyone in the nation! Also, making sure students know clear ways to participate (voting, interest groups, media platforms) #ssvpln#globaledchat
@AndyHetheringt2 In the #afterschool field, we call this "community agreements" (instead of classroom rules) to encourage Ss to keep each other accountable for the behaviors they want/need for learning. It's a great practice! #globaledchat
A6: In some of my classes, we have discussed ways of having students have a role in deciding what classroom strategies work best for them. This helps design the classroom to best fit students, but maybe it could also help model community engagement. #osussmce#globaledchat
#globaledchat A6 Also spoke with a class in Argentina 🇦🇷 over the issue of gender inequality. Lots of similarities between our two nations. Once again Ss put together questions and shared answers with each other.
A6:Actively practicing student choice in classroom policies and assignments. This is something that needs to be built upon but when students start learning how to make decisions in the classroom it helps them meaningfully engage with their community #ssvpln#globaledchat
Q7: What are your personal civic engagement goals for the school/program year? How will you develop and model your own civic knowledge, skills, and dispositions? #globaledchat
A6:Actively practicing student choice in classroom policies and assignments. This is something that needs to be built upon but when students start learning how to make decisions in the classroom it helps them meaningfully engage with their community #ssvpln#globaledchat
While I have the attention of #globaledchat , I m looking for connections with South Korean educators and/or a connection with someone from S Korea who could connect me to someone in health care & mental health fields. For Ss! Please message me!
A7: To be as knowledgeable about and engaged in the society that I live in. Civic engagement is like any other subject: you need to fully understand it yourself before you can effectively teach it. #osussmce#globaledchat
A7: To be as knowledgeable about and engaged in the society that I live in. Civic engagement is like any other subject: you need to fully understand it yourself before you can effectively teach it. #osussmce#globaledchat
A1: I believe it is important to be students' awareness of the world around them and for them to be informed about current events. This helps build empathy and helps students understand how we are all connected. #GlobalEdChat
A7: My goal is to develop more civics "habits of the heart," so I'm reading "Healing the Heart of Democracy" by @parkerjpalmer. (Thanks to @cvaughanlee for the recommendation!) Anyone want to join a book club + discussion on this w/me? #globaledchat
A7: Our civic engagement goal is always to engage the public in understanding and advocating for the importance of afterschool programs & community education! You can learn how to be an afterschool supporter on our website: https://t.co/rPv4HmnVE7#globaledchat
I think you can also learn as you go @AndyHetheringt2. No need to be an expert to start. Can be vulnerable with Ss and say, "Let's learn together! Being civically aware and engaged is a lifelong process!" #globaledchat
A7: To be as knowledgeable about and engaged in the society that I live in. Civic engagement is like any other subject: you need to fully understand it yourself before you can effectively teach it. #osussmce#globaledchat
#globaledchat A7 Goal has always been to bring a weekly speaker in from county and city government. Important for students to know their local leaders and the roles they perform. Ss will deal with local leaders on a more regular basis than state and federal leaders.
A7: I’m working in Congress this year as an educator with @AEF_Program! Applications are currently open for next year but close in one week if you’re interested! #globaledchat
Q5. As a student teacher I haven’t witnessed that yet. My students are working on a project where they research an issue they care about ( ex: police brutality) & during 2nd semester students will participate in civic engagement regarding their issue #ssvpln#globaledchat
Woo hoo! I love the work of @afterschool4all! #Afterschool programs are so vital and such great partners to schools for active learning and reinforcement of skills. #globaledchat

A2: I have participated in Mock Elections in previous years but didn't get a chance to implement it this midterm election due to time constraints. My scholars did participate in the Student Governance election. #GlobalEdChat
A7: #globaledchat#osussmce I hope to try and find some good PDs that pertain to teaching just this. Between that and my social studies methods course, I have many resources to help me develop plans to make students engaged with serving their communities.
A6. Create a student centered learning environment!! Create a classroom constitution, participate in popular sovereignty & give students the option to pick between group work or individual work. These small steps help create independent & active citizens #ssvpln#globaledchat
Our time on #globaledchat is up. Please help me thank @afterschool4all for a great chat! Join us again next week to discuss the topic “Global Competencies for Career Success.”
#globaledchat Thanks for letting me share my story tonight. Thanks to everyone who participated and shared new ideas with me. As educators, we are all in this together!!
