Hi! I’m Kristen, and I teach 6th grade physical science. I found your chat on this Great list! 5 pages of chats! I’m trying to hit all of them!!! #5thchat#pblchat
Hello, Everyone, my name is Nicholas Evans and I am a student at @GraniteStateCol. I work as a Paraprofessional and I am currently teaching my clinical classes in a 5th-grade setting. This is my very first time doing a live chat! #5thchat#GSC612702
A1 it has been a great year! Lots of great STEM projects, PBL units! I teach K-5 ad I can then f at least 1 great learning experience from each! #5thchat
A1 - Not sure if I had a "Best" moment, but my kiddos really enjoyed Mystery Skype, Skills21, hands-on science, Mars simulation, Oregon Trail simulation, DQWorld, Money Island, Mystery Science, and all of the other activities that let kids experience learning! #5thchat
A1 on the first nice spring day, I decided to take my class outside and we showcased learning via #sketchnotes with sidewalk chalk. Then we took a class gallery walk to discuss. They lived it and I did too! #5thchat
A1: The best teaching moments from this year have been centered around our read aloud books and how they create a fun classroom climate, discussions, and jokes. #5thchat
A1:I taught using stations. It helped me identify what ss knew and didn’t know about concepts rather than see whether they could read or write. Ss Matched cards, acted out, and demonstrated. Anyone can try that! Found ways to assess rather than mult. Choice test. #5thchat
A1: Hi Everyone! I'm Gina! Jumping in late! Best teaching moment...having my whole class make their reading goals for all 4 nine week periods! #5thchat
Q1: Today was the best teaching moment that I have had this year. I was observed for the first time and I got great feedback from by faculty facilitator. She stated that I established a great presence in the classroom. This was a goal I set for myself! #5thchat#GSC612702
That’s quite a list! I’ll have to add you to my #mysteryskype group. Would you be interested in showcasing the fun for preservice Ts in the fall? #5thchat
A2: Moving forward I need to find a way to create a better systematic closing from my lessons. My lessons this term are fairly short, therefore I have to be very careful with my time! #5thchat#GSC612702
A2 - Moving to 4th grade next year, so I'll focus on new curriculum and a little more patience at the start of the year than I'm used to. Also working on improving students' self-assessment. #5thchat
A2: parent communication. Working on meet the teacher videos for parents and Practice assignments on @PearDeck and @Flipgrid. Want to contact each parent by the second week of school. #5thchat
Nice job, Nicholas. 👍🏼 It’s always daunting for the first observation. Now that that’s over- it’s smooth sailing. Just love those kids and teach your heart out. #5thchat
That's a really neat idea, Sara, any idea how you might implement that strategy? Always looking for new ways to promote higher order thinking and connections! #5thchat#GSC612702
Wishing you the best in 4th! Kids will be so lucky that you’re in their corner! #5thchat Slow start, lots of patience not a bad idea for all new beginnings.
A3: We've spent time looking back through our interactive notebooks & celebrating understanding and skill progressions. We've also spent community time talking about our personal growths! #5thchat
A2 I teach college preservice teachers and I’m finding they don’t know a lot of the content I assume they know. I’ll need to tweak the in my model pedagogy lessons
- Lord’s proprietors
- branches of gov’t mirrored at state / fed level
- key people (Dorothea Dix)
- etc
#5thchat
A3: I also think it's vitally important to show your students how YOU are a reflective too. As a learner I reflect with them about my own progress! #5thchat
A3: I have found that using Google Docs have been a great tool for the students, not only does it help them idenitfy grammer and spelling mistakes, but on certin computers we have a Grammarly program as well! #5thchat#GSC612702
a3- we do daily reflections both personally and as a class as part of our daily RESET. These reflections have gotten deeper with time and practice. #5thchat
When giving homework, ask yourself. Would you want a mechanic that practiced on the previous 10 cars WRONG to work on your car? When doing Hw, kids could be practicing wrong. Think before you give it. #KidsDeserveIt#edchat#5thchat#mathchat#DitchHW#DitchBook
A3 - I have my kiddos create blog posts for important learning and answer reflection questions to synthesize their learning and solidify understanding. Here are some examples:
Many posts are still a work-in-progress!
#5thchat
A1: Working with Ss that were excited to see me when I showed up at their door. The relationships I’ve created through reading will forever be a part of my heart. Watching Ss grow & learn to love Reading has been the best gift I could ask for. #5thchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
Paul, this is an awesome way to incorperate technology into the classroom! Do the students have their own blog sites or do they all post to one that you oversee? #5thchat#GSC612702
A3: I have them fill out a form for them (and me) reflecting on their learning. What they learned, what helped them learn, what do do next time, etc. #5thchat
A4: I LOVE our classroom community, our jobs, committees and student led environment. My kids are leaders and responsible decision makers when they leave me. The self-confidence in them is AMAZING! #5thchat
A2: Provide Ts differentiated PD that will allow them to administer assessments, analyze results, and make instructional decisions based on their observations. Ts come with various levels of expertise & needs- I want to honor that. #5thchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A3 My journals are my reflective practice. I journal as I read, journal as I think through content... I share my journals with my students to model metacognition. #5thchat
They all have their own page on our class website. I invite them to be authors of specific pages and they have full access to those pages. We also have pages that are shared between all of us so we can all add blog posts! #5thchat
A4: Students all have jobs that they are responsible for in the room like taking out, putting away, and charging our chromebooks. I feel like it makes them invest in our classroom and feel like it belongs to all of them and not me. #5thchat
A4: I had to do a bubble lab for my classes this term. It was modified for a 5th to 8th grade level and it was so neat! The professor step by step was able to describle how to mix the solutions we needed to make down to how to blow the bubbles! #5thchat#GSC612702
A4 I used to create all the math games for my elementary math course. Now I en put the creation in the hands of Ss. They were rockstars this semester! I know that’s an adult example, but I know it could be done just as well or better by 5th graders. #5thchat
That's awsome Paul. Creating a blog is a great way for the students to express themselves! This term in my classes my EDU 612 professor had us create a blog. Needless to say it's my favorite assignement every week! #5thchat#GSC612702
A3: I conference with Ss & we discuss not only academic but social gains. We talk about the growth they’ve made, goals they’ve set & discuss a plan so they can achieve new goals. I want them to focus on all they’ve accomplished so far. #5thchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A5: Each year everything tweaks, adjusts and changes for me. I never run things the same way- because the kids are so different. I try not to use the same procedures- It helps keep me fresh and rut free. #5thchat
A5: For some of the students that I worked with, we downloaded a speech to text software for them so they could get his ideas onto the page. It worked well for those students but when we tried to incorperate it into a lesson, it was not used appropriatly. #5thchat#GSC612702
A5: my ss use interactive notebooks. This year they took them home with them each night. Not next year. They will have a drawer for their class. #5thchat
A4: As a RS, I don’t have my own classroom- however, the room I use for READ180 is organized. Ss have a place for all materials, schedule on the board, & baskets for small group. This organization helps us be efficient & effective with our time. #5thchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A5: I kept track of too many of my students works in projects on my desk so they wouldn't lose them, but I need a space for them to keep track of them in my classroom. #5thchat
I use a website called Wordpress, it's fairly easy to use and it's free! Here is my webpage https://t.co/Wvm6P2VUPL Let me know what you think! 😀 #5thchat#GSC612702
A5: This year, our school went 1:1 for technology. We need to re-evaluate our choices for text vs tech usage. There are times when tech is a tool but others where it’s just a simple replacement. I want us to reflect on how we used tech this year. #5thchat#LoveLiteracyLearning
A5 I keep thinking of what to add, not take away. I’m toying with ditching group projects, but then collaboration wins. This term I added a reflection component to the group work where they graded themselves and explained why. Interesting to read.
#5thchat
A6: My final grade: B My reflection: I need to incorporate more student driven lessons and opportunities for them to learn from each other. I "drove' more than I should have. #5thchat
A6: Overall for this year I would give myself an 85%. I think I made great strides forward, but I feel I still need more practice working in a classroom especially introducing topics and wrapping up the lessons! #5thchat#GSC612702
A6 - If I were to grade my excitement and ideas for returning to 5th grade I would say A. So many amazing things I will be implementing from my time as a Tech Specialist! #5thchat
A6- I’d give myself a P- Proficient- to take myself to that next level I want to better engage every learner and find more productive ways to help the Ss who seek more support #5thchat
I love the idea of self reflecting on project based assignments! I am teaching a lesson tomorrow and the students are going to create ads for Westward Expansion. That could be a neat reflection, I could tie it into the rubric! 🤔#5thchat#GSC612702
A7 Vision- I want to have more lessons that inspire further study. I’ve found that that quality occurs when I introduce a concept, publicly document their wonders, and empower Ss to discover answers. The more they experience, the more they remember. #5thchat
A7: More personal connections & relationship building with my students. EVEN MORE reading and book discussions with students! Adding more connectivity to our community! #5thchat
A7: My vision moving forward is to create assignments that allow all students to be involved, no matter the barrier. I have worked with a lot of students this year with behaviors and I have seen a lot of negative stigma toward those on IEPs and behavior plans. #5thchat#GSC612702
I was surprised at the number of Ss who gave themselves a B or C. They all said they could’ve done more. I wonder what your students would do reflecting on their work everyday. “I could have done more” becomes “I gave my all” #5thchat
Beginning of the year B+ good at giving ss feedback but not at getting grades updated since ss can redo any assign. so great at parent comm. Curr and instrucion solid!
2nd half- b-. my Inst. wasn’t so solid. Difficult to see what ss know. Inst weak during #Rubegoldberg#5thchat
I think sometimes students tend to grade themselves harder than they do their peers. I'm not sure if this is just human nature or what! Any thoughts? #5thchat#GSC612702
I think I’m going to make the reflection a daily event. Maybe via @Flipgrid ? I just don’t want it to become a check off the list. I want it to be real. Still pondering... #5thchat
A7: more parent contact, #pbl for every unit, station to practice, start off with phenomena, have a checklist of concepts to check off for each ss. Better use of blogs by having more reflective questions rather than posting assignments. #5thchat
a8: I love my team of teachers. We are already collaborating on what to change and how to improve next year. My Twitter PLN's also contribute to my learning daily. I think I just need to keep listening and trying new ideas. #5thchat
A9 this week, I can list all the topics from student journals they didn’t know much about (their words) then incorporate those into my plans for next semester. I know there are ideas for innovation here from my Twitter PLN ❤️ #5thchat
A8: Inclusion! I have two students in my 5th grade class who are mainly pull out. They have a hard time communicating with other and use ASL (one of them is my one-to-one). With my lessons I have made modifications to include them in the classroom experience! #5thchat#GSC612702
A8: I will definitely take the end of the year student responses and use them to learn from. Then I will close out the year and not carry everything over into next year, #5thchat
Thanks so much to @JuliePJones, @PaulSolarz and all the amazing educators reflecting tonight #5thchat. Thanks for all of the ideas and the generous sharing.
