Good morning #bookcamppd ! Kimberly, K-5 Reading specialist from north TX here to join the conversation! I love the chapter on finding Passion; Content, Professional, or Personal!
Q1. Page 55 - Dave mentions being REMARKABLE - that everyone talks about you in a good way. Please share a time when you or someone you know had the most talked about class on campus. What was going on? #BookCampPD
Good Morning #bookcamppd! I'm Sara from Missoula, MT. I teach 3rd grade. My favorite part of the book is adding fun, excitement, anticipation, and drama into our classrooms. I love the idea that students are on the edge of their seats wondering what will happen next.
A) Probably when I was doing simulations w/ world history Ss (Estates General, Congress of Vienna, Mid East peace negotiations, etc.). Haven't figured out how to do something similar in asynchronous online environ. #BookCampPD
A1 It's such a great feeling to feel REMARKABLE. I felt remarkable when I started using #mysteryscience in my classroom. My students were so engaged and loved to explore science through investigation. #bookcampPD

A1: Desks were moved out - tables moved in...Basal readers moved out - novel sets & high interest reads were brought in.... Changing to meet the needs of today's Ss - both the learning environment & the content delivery #bookcamppd

This is such a great hook for MS and HS and is sometimes thought of as ‘elementary’. Learning can and should be exciting and engaging at all levels! #BookCampPD

A1. I’m long term subbing & last week a peer said he’s had Ss tell him that I’m making a difference. Wow! Can’t tell what that did for my confidence #BookCampPD
A1: @wmirvinelem’s 4th grade team is always coming up with REMARKABLE and engaging activities that has the whole school talking about it and wanting to follow what they’re doing #bookcamppd
A1: We have so many great classrooms @TigerTownCHS! But @watkinskaleb has some amazing things going on right now! He started a culture of book love with his ELA students. They have read over 500 books this year! #bookcamppd
A1. Our Social Studies department at BMS has many WONDERFUL opportunities per grade level. 7th Grade hosts an ancient adventure fair where they set up booths with their groups and share info with the school. #bookcamppd
A1. As a dual lang team we used to do cumulative project presentations with our 40 kindergartners! It’s remarkable what kdg can do when you give them ownership of learning. #BookCampPD
A1: I try to do elements of PBL and part of one "getting into Athens" project the students hosted and Agora and dressed up, sold their goods, had to attract customers. It went well every year #BookCampPD

Hello! I am Megan, a 4th grade classroom teacher from VA! My favorite #tlap is incorporating your passion, enthusiasm, and creating memorable engaging lessons! #bookcamppd
A1: when I used @flipgrid to have my students answer an essential question in groups. Students spilled out into the hall recording themselves in a big green (stand out - oh yea!) pod ! Laughing and learning at the same time! #BookCampPD
A1) When I first started teaching at my school, it wasn't an expectation that our Ss would/could speak English with each other (I'm in Mexico). I expected it from my Ss, & then they did it. Everyone was surprised & then the expectation changed. #bookcamppd
A1: When I've teachName Poems, students can't wait to tell other students what their names mean. I feel like there is a buzz in the halls all day when I teach that lesson. #bookcamppd
Q2. #BookCampPD is all about supporting others. Please share how you will support other educators who are working toward implementing amazing strategies that are mentioned on each page in "Teach Like a Pirate."

A1: Changing up how we use formative assessment to guide instruction - to be more engaging, increase critical thinking, & empower Ss. https://t.co/3HxgrCMuvS#bookcamppd
A2: As a leader, I must provide opportunities for Ts to observe each other and share the amazing things they are doing. Also, I celebrate publicly those who #tlap! I can feel the culture in the school shifting to one of explorations and excitement! #BookCampPD

A2 I always like to be supportive of innovative teachers. It can be very hard for teachers to break out of their normal and try new things. Helping them feel confident and giving positive feedback will help them give their best to the students. #bookcampPD
A2: Listen...listen...listen to their needs, concerns, & professional goals. Then take a "first step" to offer support. One small step at a time #bookcamppd

A1: Creating a living wax museum for Ss to exhibit their research and creativity. Also when 3 classes wrote a song about Jamestown, eventually most of the school was singing the tune 🎶. #bookcamppd
A2: @lynzhite and I have been spreading the pirate movement throughout our school. We've talked about the hooks and how #tlap has changed us as teachers. Many people since then have read the book. #bookcamppd
A2: I try to always share new things I've learned with my team, learn, model, and participate with my students. Say thank you and listen to all the teachers out there including my students. #bookcamppd
A2: The key is connecting, stopping in or inviting others in to see what you are doing. Those who do not know different can't do different. Building an environment of support is key to innovation in teaching. #BookCampPD

A2 Building trusting relationships so when encouraged to take risks others will feel they are being encouraged to grow and not being ‘set up’ in any way. #bookcampPD
A2: ❤️ these profiles of giving (as a way of preventing teacher burnout)! I think I prefer being a coach rather than an expert since I feel that we all need to continually learn and there is no end of learning #BookCampPD

Hello Kathy Miller jumping in late! #BookCampPD
A2) We started a book club at my school and we travel to EdCamps together. Having others to process supports making changes. We talk about what we are doing during building meetings when possible.
Shared @Edulastic with my grade level team last week. Love how it has widgets for question styles Ss will see on standardized assessments and allows for individualized feedback for Ss. #BookCampPD
I doubt that is the case. It is often very helpful to an institution to have someone come in with "fresh eyes" and offer feedback and observations. #BookCampPD
A2: One way I support teachers is by digging deeper on Newcomers’ story and sharing it with teachers.
Students who come to us from other countries have a story and language barrier shouldn’t be a reason to amplify their voice
#bookcamppd
Even new educators have experience and perspectives that can help others. Plus, asking for suggestions from others goes a long way in helping everyone improve. #BookCampPD
Q3. Grab your book and find an idea that you would like to try during the month of March or maybe it is something someone has already mentioned during the chat. What is it? Cooking? Dressing up? Social Media? Being "on"? Adding Music? #BookCampPD
A2: Be there. It sounds simple, but in order to support another person trying something new...being there in whatever capacity they need, coach, mentor, sounding board...this provides them with a safe space to learn and grow..just like I would for a student. #BookCampPD

A3) I'd love to add music to the intro pages for each of my lessons in my online course. Have images that I hope serve as "hooks" but would love to add music as well. #BookCampPD
A3 enthusiasm!!! There are always some parts of the curriculum I dread teaching. And the students know it. I need to focus on creating a better atmosphere and engaging my students by being "on" Make the kids excited about elapsed time! #edet543#bookcampPD
Quite the opposite. Asking questions shows you are open to learning. I am trying to get my high school Ss to see that. I use this video with them in an intro lesson: https://t.co/ir6JQ8t1AK#BookCampPD
A2 - I'm trying to share more ideas, including the ones that don't go so well.
There's something to be learned even from the epic failures...and another person may have just the trick to turn it into something amazing!
#BookCampPD
A3: I want to explore the "hooks" with my lessons more. Planning with a purpose but even more specific. Looking at which is most effective. #BookCampPD

Q3 - B Making plans and sharing ideas during #BookCampPD is fabulous! Continuing to collaborate and supporting each other during the week extends your learning and growth. Please be sure to follow others, encourage and make connections when you see others make posts.
A3: I really want to dress up a sentence with details and voice, and then have the Ss decorate it with glitter and bling and walk their sentence down a red carpet. #bookcamppd
Have any of you checked out the #BookCampPD hash tag during the week to see what others are posting? You might want to try it out and support them by making comments?
A3) Getting back to blogging & social media, hopefully on a daily basis, for young adults & myself. Have a classroom account to share our learning. #BookCampPD#globalcitizen
Many thanks for being here this morning! The next #BookCampPD will be on March 3rd - "Book Tasting" @KimSnodgrass will be our guest moderator during the chat! How exciting is this!! Please join us!
A3: Next week my Ss will “travel outside” of the school walls using Google Hangouts to share and collaborate with Ss across the state. This will be our first time using this platform and connecting with others outside our school. #bookcamppd
