Hey #3rdchat! Ashleigh, from Hutchinson, KS and your moderator tonight. I am passionate about many things... especially anything involving kids. But these two peanuts make my heart skip a beat- watching them grow up is everything! <3

  • KutacTonya Jul 11 @ 9:05 PM EDT
Hi #3rdchat. Tonya from Texas. Outside of school I enjoy reading, exercising and spending time with family and friends!
  • azurehenwood Jul 11 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: Because music is big part of my life, we sometimes rewrite lyrics to songs to help us remember things. Sometimes, I use music to gain their interest. One time, I played Ghostbusters to introduce "kn, wr, gh" sounds. They are ghosts! Get it? #3rdchat
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: My go to thing is SUPERHEROES! I grew up with my nose in those stories everyday. I even wanted to be a comic book artist. I share my drawings with my students. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jul 11 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1 (contd): I feel like this strength really tailors into my district and buildings focus for SEL. I can continue to use it to enhance our morning meetings and any cooperative learning project that we may do. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jul 11 @ 9:06 PM EDT
A1: I feel like my "go-to" thing is relationships. I am passionate about my students feeling and knowing that I truly care about them as people.. not just as their teacher, and i feel like that translates into the activities and the lessons we do everyday. #3rdchat
  • lesahaney Jul 11 @ 9:07 PM EDT
A1: My "go to" thing are creation apps/technology that enables our classroom to connect with others outside of our four walls. This year I want to connect in more meaningful ways utilizing @EmpaticoOrg and #TeachSDGs #3rdchat

A2: In my classroom I believe that I am a combination of learning styles. We use a mixture of all styles everyday, but I would say we mostly are visual & kinesthetic learners. In my room you'll see a lot of pictures, hand motions, movement, and dancing to learn skills. #3rdchat
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2: I am an interpersonal-social learner. I make a lot of time for collaborative work. Students cannot reach deeper levels of learning without turning the conversations over to them. #3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jul 11 @ 9:12 PM EDT
A2: Bodily-kinesthetic and Musical. We rarely sit still. We move to engage our brains. I would like to work on interpersonal-social learning. #3rdchat

  • SarahJHuber Jul 11 @ 9:15 PM EDT
A2: I would say I definitely use a blend of all the learning styles, but I especially use bodily-kinesthetic and musical. I would like to be more conscious of utilizing different styles for different students. #3rdchat

A3: I am SO excited about this! My thing is "relationships" so I would like to do something where students can have an individual part- but must work together to complete a task. I'm thinking inferencing..using a detective theme and maybe transforming my room- thoughts?! #3rdchat
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:18 PM EDT
A3: Thinking of bringing back a narrative writing project I did in Google Slides. We created a story about an ELA Superhero. Students worked on utilizing dialogue to support the story. #3rdchat

  • SRyan3rdgrade Jul 11 @ 9:22 PM EDT
In a galaxy not far far away we are going to explore different planets. Was at conference once where T told about PBL Ss had to make travel videos to get others to want to move to other planets taking bad & using it as selling points (it rains diamonds you’ll b rich) #3rdchat

  • 8to3withMrsV Jul 11 @ 9:23 PM EDT
You cld transform your room, make it glow in the dark & use black lights. You could have each person be like “mission control” & each planet a station that they have a mission to solve to move onto the nxt planet. Once they complete all the stations they can get a badge #3rdchat

A4: Comparison is a BIG struggle for me. I have to make sure that I am finding people to breathe truth into my life so that I feel encouraged rather than tearing myself down. I lean heavily on my #3rdchat co-mods for their encouragement!
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A4: I am very lucky to work with a very talented group of individuals in my grade-level. We lift each other up and celebrate each other's success. We lean on each other when we need it. The Joker stays far away from us. #3rdchat @RamageLynda @swolfpack214
  • 8to3withMrsV Jul 11 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A4: With all the amazing educators on social media it's hard to not fall into the comparison trap and try to "keep up" w/what others are doing. I remind myself & others that what they are doing is amazing, & although it may look "perfect" it is not always what it seems! #3rdchat
  • DonnaWeth Jul 11 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3 My thing is the environment as building relationships. My decor is green and blue with lots of globes. I would love to have room transformations and have my kids travel the world. I would also like to incorporate more of #TeachSDGs #3rdchat
  • SRyan3rdgrade Jul 11 @ 9:24 PM EDT
A3 we have @BenchmarkEdu ELA want to transform room to court house & Ss debate the rights they learn about (Alice Paul, civil rights, Thurgood Marshall #3rdchat
  • lesahaney Jul 11 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A4: I like what the authors said about comparison kills creativity. You run this risk as a connected educator. Have to focus on drawing inspiration from what you see not using it as a benchmark of your self worth. #3rdchat
  • KutacTonya Jul 11 @ 9:25 PM EDT
A4: Comparison is the Joker at work. Instead of comparing, collaborate. Educators are always willing to share. #3rdchat #bethewildcard

  • SarahJHuber Jul 11 @ 9:28 PM EDT
A4: Comparison really gets to me sometimes. I think just remembering that we're all wanting what's best for kids, and having confidence in my own abilities, will help me conquer the "comparison trap." Plus leaning on my #3rdchat team for support will be a strong help!
  • DonnaWeth Jul 11 @ 9:29 PM EDT
A4 I remind myself that where I am is fine as long as I keep moving forward. I have an amazing PLN who life me up and share ideas all the time. I am a true teacher I beg borrow and steal- no room for comparison #3rdchat

    Q5: Systematic Barriers #3rdchat
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:30 PM EDT
Absolutely! We are stronger together! #3rdchat
    In reply to @KutacTonya
  • azurehenwood Jul 11 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A5: Two words: Demand and Time. Those two words are the enemy of my creativity. #3rdchat
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A5: Too many goals & initiatives from the top down can encroach upon in-depth lesson planning. As a former administrator, it was tough to find balance. Collaborative efforts between admins and teachers with a laser focus are crucial. We need to dance together. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jul 11 @ 9:31 PM EDT
A5: I try not to let these barriers affect me as a teacher, but I would be lying if I said they didn't. Of course time and money hinder all the wonderful things we could do. Come testing time I find myself cramming and getting stressed instead of trusting the process. #3rdchat
  • SRyan3rdgrade Jul 11 @ 9:31 PM EDT
#3rdchat A5 mandates curriculum & pacing guide. Can hinder creativity but just have to think about bringing the transformations to what we have to teach. As are alway passionate about it if the T is so that’s 1/2 the battle
  • lesahaney Jul 11 @ 9:32 PM EDT
A5: In all honesty, all of my perceived "challenges" have proven to come from me. Demands such as time or content/pacing are more malleable than I think they are. #3rdchat
  • KutacTonya Jul 11 @ 9:32 PM EDT
Q5: I use to think that assessments and standardized tests were barriers of creativity. I've now used @Kahoot, @Plickers , and @Flipgrid to review. SS love it! #3rdchat #bethewildcard
  • DonnaWeth Jul 11 @ 9:33 PM EDT
A5 I sound like a broken record because I say it often but time is my issue. I simply don’t have enough to do everything I want to do. Finding ways to integrate creatively is my challenge. #3rdchat
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:33 PM EDT
Teams are made of a diverse group of individuals. It is okay to be different. Stay confident in who you are and what you do. There is a reason why you were selected to be in front of that class. Believe it! #3rdchat
    In reply to @SarahJHuber
  • SarahJHuber Jul 11 @ 9:35 PM EDT
A5: My barriers are state and district-mandated testing, money and planning time, and perfectionism and comparison to others. I know I can work around those things, and I shouldn't make excuses, but it's something I struggle with and have to work on. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jul 11 @ 9:36 PM EDT
    Q6: Personal Barriers #3rdchat
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A6: My kids sports schedule can get in the way of my creative efforts. I have to work with the rhythm of my school year and sports calendar. I know Spring is my busiest time, so I take advantage of the off seasons. #3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jul 11 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A6: The fear of failure gets in the way of my creativity as well. Being overwhelmed as a wife and mom can also be a factor. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jul 11 @ 9:37 PM EDT
A6: I would say time would also fall into a personal barrier. I don't say NO enough... and that can at times hurt the quality of the work I do because I am overdoing to many things. This year I am going to make more of an effort for my self care and well being #3rdchat

A6: TIME! There is never enough time in the day to plan and do everything I want to accomplish. My husband says I spend too much time on school and I can't disagree. I have to work on finding a balance between my love for work and my love for life outside the classroom. #3rdchat
  • SRyan3rdgrade Jul 11 @ 9:40 PM EDT

  • azurehenwood Jul 11 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A7: I need to learn more about gofundme and applying for grants. These things take time and I often think that I don't have time to do them. Also, I need to reach out to the community and look for opportunities as well. #3rdchat
  • Ron_Martiello Jul 11 @ 9:44 PM EDT
A7: I find ways to work around any budget issues. I once heard an old pastor say, "When there is no way, you need to make a new way." Apps is a prime example. Too many free options are out there to be slowed down by lack of funds. #3rdchat

A8: Honestly, I am my own biggest roadblock. I am a perfectionist by nature and sometimes that holds me back from trying new things or going FULL OUT like I know I can. Allowing myself grace to try and fail is what I am giving myself more of this year. #3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jul 11 @ 9:51 PM EDT
