#RuralEdChat is a chat that focuses on the needs of the rural educator. This chat has been revised by Tammy Neil (@MathNeil), John Martin (@edventures) and Natalee Stotz (@nataleestotz).
#RuralEdChat Hi All! @KsCommissioner is currently talking to @KStateKNEASP about the #kansascan redesign. Lots of pre-service teachers thinking about how education might be in their future classrooms.
Hey guys! Julia here from Grove City College. Weather is rainy and 50 today but was sunny and 70 yesterday! Preservice elementary and special ed teacher #ruraledchat
We know that summer offers teachers a different mode where our own learning can take off. We will have some questions for you in a few mins. Be sure to tag your thought with #ruraledchat
A1: I am most excited to learn how to relax. I know that's probably not where we were headed, but I actually have that opportunity this summer. I think I'm taking it. #RuralEdChat
A1: I'm probably getting a little broken record here, but next year I'm teaching a year long, project based programming class. Which means I have a lot to learn about all of those words and how they work together. #RuralEdChat
A1 Our faculty is reading "Enough As She Is" by @RachelJSimmons and, since I had already started (and nearly finished it) on my own, I can easily anticipate the great discussions we're going to have.
#RuralEdChat
A1b) After about 2 weeks of hibernation, I suspect I will start looking for new projects for my students next year. Looking forward to getting some reading done as well. Not sure what I'll be reading yet. #RuralEdChat
A1 I'm excited to think hard about the ways my teaching currently does and does not support social justice, and think through possible changes.
#RuralEdChat
A1 I'm always excited (and/or anxious) to see what conversations, topics, and themes emerge as the summer progresses. That will create the social context in which our kids return, and give me opportunities to learn and grow.
#RuralEdChat
A1, #2: I'm also excited to learn what some of student will be learning - two of them were accepted into a Carnegie Mellon summer program for math and science, so they'll be spending their summer over across the country doing some cool stuff :) #Ruraledchat
A1) My district is really focusing on using @CanvasLMS . I want to really plan a curriculum that keeps my students engaged. That means I'll be digging into learning about distance learning. #RuralEdChat
#ruraledchat Have you heard about #CyberPD. We've had wonderful summer professional book discussion for the past 6 years with educators around the country and world.
Q2 How do you plan and prioritize your learning alongside the other draws of summer like taking care of yourself and embracing different routines? #ruraledchat

A2 Having my wife around in the summer makes it pretty easy to take time away from work - when she's done for the day, so am I. Also, I love running in my neighbourhood, and when better to do it?!
#RuralEdChat
During the day Monday-Friday I will be learning from the children and veteran counselors at the camp. On the weekends I will be enjoying my down time and going to the Shore or spending time with friends and family #ruraledchat
A2: plan is easy - schedule is totally shifting anyway, so blocking some calendar time isn't too difficult. Sticking with it, on the other hand... #Ruraledchat

That's fantastic! Thanks so much for joining us for #ruraledchat. I think you might be a first pair of future teachers from that scenario. #ruraledchat
A2: Since I'm in Florida, I plan to plan during the high sun (1-3pm) or during the afternoon thunderstorms (4-6) depending on the weather. #RuralEdChat
A2 summers get pretty warm in the Northern Sacramento Valley, so I get chores/ critters/ gardening done in the morning and can stay inside in the 100+ afternoons doing my reading and research. Or head into school and do it there a couple days a week. #RuralEdChat
A3a: Most of my summer learning is informal. I really need to do a better job documenting. My district does allow personalized learning. There's just a bit of paperwork to do. #RuralEdChat
A3 I try to blog about my summer learning periodically, partly to keep the content relatively fresh, partly to document, partly to explore and share ideas.
#RuralEdChat
A3 My school does honour summer professional development. For one thing, we usually manage to save a little PD money to help people out. But also, we make space for people to share what they did and learned; sometimes that becomes ongoing learning for a while.
#RuralEdChat
A3 it seems most of my coworkers have their own goals they are working on over the summer, their own research and passions that don’t involve “documenting and working” with the district. Then we all tend to share our learning in August #Ruraledchat
Although edtech is extremely helpful in the classroom, i do not plan on expanding my knowledge in that area this summer. I will be outside in the sun and doing hands on experiences. EDtech can wait till classes start again. #ruraledchat
That is SO important. Too many don't look beyond the sales pitch. Many of the current trends were tried in the past. We need to learn from past mistakes and successes. #RuralEdChat
