A1) Yes.Teaching kinders how to work together is essential. We turn and talk, solve small socal problems every day, all day long! #mtedchat
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:09 PM EST
A1 I started each day with a morning meeting to get Ss warmed up talking and listening each day #mtedchat

A1) Student teaching coming soon, hope to use a lot of debate collaboration among students~ #MTedchat
  • MrsKimStout Nov 20 @ 10:10 PM EST
A1: Flexible seating! And giving many opportunities to work together at the tables in which they sit at. Less teacher talk time, more student talk time. #mtedchat

A1 Lots if talking and working together throughout the day. This year I’ve started doing collaborative game play so students play a game meant for two players with 4 so they have partners to collaborate and discuss with, especially when playing for the first time #mtedchat
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:12 PM EST
I think classroom arrangement is one of the first steps to collaboration. You have to have a place for it to happen! Not a lot of collaboration happens in rows. #mtedchat

Q2: What are your favorite digital tools for collaboration? #MTedchat
  • St006C Nov 20 @ 10:15 PM EST
A2) @Flipgrid is my NUMBER ONE collaboration tool for educators! #mtedchat
  • AnnBruckerEDU Nov 20 @ 10:16 PM EST
A1) Even being out of the classroom for 5 years, I try to do this as often as possible! Selfishly, I feel like there’s as much in it for the facilitator of collaboration as there is for the collaborators. #mtedchat
  • MrsKimStout Nov 20 @ 10:16 PM EST
I had very few behavior issues last year after I implemented it! It works for most kids, not all, but most! #MTedchat

    In reply to @AnnBruckerEDU
  • St006C Nov 20 @ 10:17 PM EST
I have not used it this year because I am focusing on @Seesaw However with the additional steps that microsoft has added, it is not as user friendly. #mtedchat

    A2: @breakoutEDU = Collaboration!!! I LOVE this tool!! As well as @Flipgrid and @Seesaw #mtedchat
  • AnnBruckerEDU Nov 20 @ 10:18 PM EST
Knowing what we know know about learning and best practices in teaching, why is “stand and deliver” still even a method?! #MTedchat
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:18 PM EST
I agree with you there. I have stumbled with those new features as well. Do you use the blog feature on Seesaw so they can comment on classmate posts? #mtedchat
    In reply to @St006C, @Flipgrid, @Seesaw
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:20 PM EST
I would argue that it is not a "method" but more of a "habit" that is hard to break. #mtedchat

  • HowardKiyuna Nov 20 @ 10:25 PM EST

For those who joined #mtedchat late here are the Qs for tonight!
  • AnnBruckerEDU Nov 20 @ 10:28 PM EST
A3 As a mom of “one of each,” I have seen that digital or even game-based collaboration levels the playing field; it allows the quiet, shy, or uncertain Ss to finally have a voice, and it tends to temper the over participators who already tend to do school well. #MTedchat
  • TaylorTreasure3 Nov 20 @ 10:28 PM EST
A3) Encouragement! Students don't always have the confidence to jump right in, but fostering a classroom environment where they're encouraged is a chance to step forward. #mtedchat
  • AnnBruckerEDU Nov 20 @ 10:29 PM EST
Hey #MTedchat check this out! An adorable shirt, a GREAT professional read, and a chance to win a @breakoutEDU kit!😃
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:30 PM EST
A3 I find that starting small is always good. Start with partners, let them choose their partners, then make the groups a little bigger. Choice is key! #mtedchat
  • Shelley_Emslie Nov 20 @ 10:30 PM EST
A3 I start the ones who are not comfortable collaborating on little collaborations w/ one or two other students. As they build confidence, they engage in whole class collaborations. #mtedchat
  • HowardKiyuna Nov 20 @ 10:31 PM EST
A3: The solution might require knowing why they are reluctant. Various delays in development might require scaling back expectations. I think if Trevor Mackenzie’s swimming pool graphic/analogy #mtedchat
  • cristama - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:31 PM EST
Hi everyone! Jumping in late, just finished up with a little “me” time. Glad I could make it for the rest of the chat! #mtedchat
  • St006C Nov 20 @ 10:31 PM EST
A3) I think that tech tools can help students collaborate. I also use sentence stems in my class to faciliate that "what do I say" barrier." #mtedchat
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:31 PM EST
This is a great insight! WHY are students reluctant or struggling? Every student has a story! #mtedchat

  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:32 PM EST
I LOVE sentence stems. I even use them with adult learners. I think everyone needs a starter sometimes! #mtedchat

A3: Providing opportunities to practice collaboration skills… Often we assume students know how to work in groups, work with tech, and/or are confident to share. These are all coachable skills. Need to start in the earliest grades and consistently offer experiences #mtedchat
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:38 PM EST
A4 Since working at @MontanaPBS I find myself using so many new tools to collaborate w/Ts. I love Zoom, Google Docs, Keep and Voxer the most to stay in touch w/ @DBakkegard @MekcaWallace @KariWardle @BenGarciaSOPTV #mtedchat
  • AnnBruckerEDU Nov 20 @ 10:39 PM EST
A4.2 My team uses Google (all the doc types) and Hangouts daily. We also coordinate projects in @SlackHQ and @trello - so many useful tools for teamwork! #MTedchat
  • TaylorTreasure3 Nov 20 @ 10:39 PM EST
A4) I'd love to do collaboration content areas outside of English - With art, history, etc- the issue is starting the conversation. Even with mentor teachers it's getting up the courage to ask that can be so difficult. #mtedchat

Q5 What are the challenges to collaborating with students? What strategies have worked for you to overcome them? Admins/Coaches/EdLeaders how do you support teachers to collaborate with one another? #MTedchat
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:46 PM EST
Me too! Twitter gave me access to so many MORE Ts since there were fewer of them in my small school. #mtedchat
    In reply to @cristama, @TaylorTreasure3
  • TaylorTreasure3 Nov 20 @ 10:48 PM EST
A5) Expertise blind spots would be my assumption- it can be easy to forget where students may need more support that we may accidentally overlook! If it comes naturally, having other teachers observe and comment may help those oversights. #mtedchat
  • cristama - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:49 PM EST
A5: I think many of us struggle to let our kids collaborate, because we had negative experiences with group work when we were students. We have more tools today, to provide students opportunities to offer a voice and support than we had then. #mtedchat
    • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:45 PM EST

  • AnnBruckerEDU Nov 20 @ 10:49 PM EST
A5 As an outsider stepping in, I have seen that sometimes student “collaboration” time leads to teacher “freedom” time (ck email, visit, etc). It’s an easy trap to fall in to, but it’s so important to take full advantage of the time to wander, watch, listen & learn! #MTedchat
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:49 PM EST
Great idea! Teachers observing teachers is a great strategy for all kinds of things! #mtedchat

    In reply to @AnnBruckerEDU
  • cristama - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:51 PM EST
A5: Many also get hung up on the assessment piece… With traditional grading practices, it is hard to “grade" collaborative work. it is much easier to assess growth when we shift to supporting the process more than evaluating the product #mtedchat
    • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:45 PM EST
Q5 What are the challenges to collaborating with students? What strategies have worked for you to overcome them? Admins/Coaches/EdLeaders how do you support teachers to collaborate with one another? #MTedchat
  • MrsKimStout Nov 20 @ 10:51 PM EST
A5: Certain students dominate and leave others out, while Ts forget about the Ss and then the free for all begins. Ts need to stay engaged while the Ss work. A lot can be learned from Ss during collaboration time. #mtedchat
  • NVradenburg - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:51 PM EST
A5 In PD Ts often resist collaboration at first. Sometimes it takes bribery, like chocolate, but eventually they come around and find it enjoyable. #mtedchat

I also moved to 4th last year, and I found the same thing in my classroom. Ss don't always know HOW TO collaborate. They need to be taught how to do it effectively! #mtedchat

  • cristama - Moderator Nov 20 @ 10:54 PM EST
A5: I think as an admin, the best way that I can support edus in providing collab experiences for students… Is to provide opps for the same high level collaboration for staff. background info through professional development as important as well. What is the purpose? #mtedchat

Where do you think her need to dominate comes from? Is it in certain subjects? With certain people? #mtedchat

A6) Nothing worth doing was ever easy, and same goes with teaching. Rather than sticking to one's self, reaching out and working with others helps with always improving. You never know when another teacher has a method you may want to follow! #mtedchat

A6) You have to try!!! (I feel like a bit of a hypocrite for saying this). while Start with something simple like a think, pair, share strategy and then have the other student share what their partner said. #mtedchat

Q6: What is your advice to a teacher who is reluctant to use collaborative learning in the classroom or for professional development? #MTedchat

A6 I say "Try it, and if you don't like it, you can give it up." Guess what? They never have given it up after they see the true value and how it will change their life! A little dramatic, but it truly is life changing! #mtedchat

Think, pair, share or turn and talk are great strategies! I used them a ton! #mtedchat
