Welcome to #MTedchat! Our topic tonight is “Collaboration in the Classroom and Beyond!” Please take a moment to introduce yourself: name, role, and location.
A1: Flexible seating! And giving many opportunities to work together at the tables in which they sit at. Less teacher talk time, more student talk time. #mtedchat
A1 Lots if talking and working together throughout the day. This year I’ve started doing collaborative game play so students play a game meant for two players with 4 so they have partners to collaborate and discuss with, especially when playing for the first time #mtedchat
I think classroom arrangement is one of the first steps to collaboration. You have to have a place for it to happen! Not a lot of collaboration happens in rows. #mtedchat

A1) Even being out of the classroom for 5 years, I try to do this as often as possible! Selfishly, I feel like there’s as much in it for the facilitator of collaboration as there is for the collaborators. #mtedchat
I have not used it this year because I am focusing on @Seesaw However with the additional steps that microsoft has added, it is not as user friendly. #mtedchat
I agree with you there. I have stumbled with those new features as well. Do you use the blog feature on Seesaw so they can comment on classmate posts? #mtedchat
A2 I have been using @padlet to have classes communicate with other classes. So easy and so powerful. Check out our playground padlet https://t.co/I8RkqKnnD6#mtedchat
When we plan genius times my Ss Shaw ideas. Something as simple as a Google Sheet with 1 tab per Ss allows them to see each other’s planning and shopping lists. #mtedchat
Check it out! @padlet is easy to create and share. Also, can be a great back channel tool! That was how we used it this weekend at a workshop I went to. #mtedchat

A3 As a mom of “one of each,” I have seen that digital or even game-based collaboration levels the playing field; it allows the quiet, shy, or uncertain Ss to finally have a voice, and it tends to temper the over participators who already tend to do school well. #MTedchat
A3) Encouragement! Students don't always have the confidence to jump right in, but fostering a classroom environment where they're encouraged is a chance to step forward. #mtedchat
A3 I find that starting small is always good. Start with partners, let them choose their partners, then make the groups a little bigger. Choice is key! #mtedchat
A3 I start the ones who are not comfortable collaborating on little collaborations w/ one or two other students. As they build confidence, they engage in whole class collaborations. #mtedchat
A3: The solution might require knowing why they are reluctant. Various delays in development might require scaling back expectations. I think if Trevor Mackenzie’s swimming pool graphic/analogy #mtedchat

A3: I think providing opportunities where each student has an active role in the activity, like they HAVE to take turns. Then give that over the top positive feedback when they step out of their comfort zone and jump into the activity! #MTedchat

A1) One of my favorite professional development experiences I've facilitated was our #Daily5#dailycafe book study using @Seesaw It was a great way to hear all voices and share ideas. #mtedchat

A4.1 TWITTER! What did I do before I knew you guys?!?! My PLN has literally taken me on adventures I would have never discovered in my own little bubble or on my own. #MTedchat
A3: Providing opportunities to practice collaboration skills… Often we assume students know how to work in groups, work with tech, and/or are confident to share. These are all coachable skills. Need to start in the earliest grades and consistently offer experiences #mtedchat
A4.2 My team uses Google (all the doc types) and Hangouts daily. We also coordinate projects in @SlackHQ and @trello - so many useful tools for teamwork! #MTedchat
A4) I'd love to do collaboration content areas outside of English - With art, history, etc- the issue is starting the conversation. Even with mentor teachers it's getting up the courage to ask that can be so difficult. #mtedchat
A4: My go to collaboration with fellow educators is Twitter!! I have learned SO much from all you! Also @edcampBigSky!! Huge collaboration opportunity there!! #mtedchat
A4: As a professional, I try to stay active in my existing professional learning network… AND try to stretch outside of my comfort zone by establishing new connections. I appreciate any chance were my digital world can intersect with the real world. #mtedchat
A4 Collaboration is my life line. Twitter and chats like this and the awesome people who share and encourage. I agree with Ann; what on earth did I do before this PLN?! #mtedchat

I could not agree more! Going to conferences and meeting up with Twitter friends adds a whole new layer of fun! #mtedchat Especially when you go to the Crab Pot with @AnnBruckerEDU
YES!! When I was teaching fifth grade, I found myself collaborating more with educators I connected with online than I did with teachers in my own building. It felt less threatening.. eventually I was more confident to share more locally #mtedchat
Q5 What are the challenges to collaborating with students? What strategies have worked for you to overcome them? Admins/Coaches/EdLeaders how do you support teachers to collaborate with one another? #MTedchat
A5) Expertise blind spots would be my assumption- it can be easy to forget where students may need more support that we may accidentally overlook! If it comes naturally, having other teachers observe and comment may help those oversights. #mtedchat
A5: I think many of us struggle to let our kids collaborate, because we had negative experiences with group work when we were students. We have more tools today, to provide students opportunities to offer a voice and support than we had then. #mtedchat
Q5 What are the challenges to collaborating with students? What strategies have worked for you to overcome them? Admins/Coaches/EdLeaders how do you support teachers to collaborate with one another? #MTedchat
A5 As an outsider stepping in, I have seen that sometimes student “collaboration” time leads to teacher “freedom” time (ck email, visit, etc). It’s an easy trap to fall in to, but it’s so important to take full advantage of the time to wander, watch, listen & learn! #MTedchat
A5: Many also get hung up on the assessment piece… With traditional grading practices, it is hard to “grade" collaborative work. it is much easier to assess growth when we shift to supporting the process more than evaluating the product #mtedchat
Q5 What are the challenges to collaborating with students? What strategies have worked for you to overcome them? Admins/Coaches/EdLeaders how do you support teachers to collaborate with one another? #MTedchat
A5: Certain students dominate and leave others out, while Ts forget about the Ss and then the free for all begins. Ts need to stay engaged while the Ss work. A lot can be learned from Ss during collaboration time. #mtedchat
A5 In PD Ts often resist collaboration at first. Sometimes it takes bribery, like chocolate, but eventually they come around and find it enjoyable. #mtedchat
Q5 What are the challenges to collaborating with students? What strategies have worked for you to overcome them? Admins/Coaches/EdLeaders how do you support teachers to collaborate with one another? #MTedchat
A5 last year was my first year in 4th and I assumed students would know how to collaborate. It takes time and modeling to show students what you expect. #mtedchat
I also moved to 4th last year, and I found the same thing in my classroom. Ss don't always know HOW TO collaborate. They need to be taught how to do it effectively! #mtedchat
This was my experience. I did not like being the person who did all of the work. I resented it. It took a long time for me to come around to collaboration b/c of that. #mtedchat
A5 I found for colleagues it took patience and a few times where their world was rocked by collaborating in Docs! It's been magical since they have seen the light! #mtedchat
A5: I think as an admin, the best way that I can support edus in providing collab experiences for students… Is to provide opps for the same high level collaboration for staff. background info through professional development as important as well. What is the purpose? #mtedchat
Q5 What are the challenges to collaborating with students? What strategies have worked for you to overcome them? Admins/Coaches/EdLeaders how do you support teachers to collaborate with one another? #MTedchat
I very quickly became the “artist“ in almost any project… I liked it, because I could draw things… But I never actually had to know any of the content behind what I was representing through illustrations. Somebody else had content job ;) #lifeskills#mtedchat
This was me, too. Even in college, I only had one experience in which peers were held accountable for their lack of work. These resentful experiences still hold a residual effect today. #mtedchat
I have one who constantly dominates and tries to control other Ss. If I sit with her it helps but I also don’t want to neglect the other groups. Any suggestions? #mtedchat
A6) Nothing worth doing was ever easy, and same goes with teaching. Rather than sticking to one's self, reaching out and working with others helps with always improving. You never know when another teacher has a method you may want to follow! #mtedchat
A6) You have to try!!! (I feel like a bit of a hypocrite for saying this). while Start with something simple like a think, pair, share strategy and then have the other student share what their partner said. #mtedchat
A6 I say "Try it, and if you don't like it, you can give it up." Guess what? They never have given it up after they see the true value and how it will change their life! A little dramatic, but it truly is life changing! #mtedchat
