Matt Sterling, Teaching and Learning TOSA, @powayunified. Jumping in and out because of kid bedtime but hoping to learn some literacy strategies I can share with the two staffs I work with! #caedchat
Rick Stevens from San Francisco area. 25 years in class & admin, now consultant & designer. I hope to learn more about how people use cross-curricular connections in teaching/ learning #caedchat
A1: Literacy is the ability to read, comprehend and expand upon the initial thoughts expressed in a text whether it be literature or informational. #CAedchat
A1: Besides the ability to read, write, speak and listen, use numbers and technology, to express and understand ideas form opinions, decide and solve problems, so that you can contribute and impact your community and the world
#caedchat
A1 literacy is learning by reading (books, mags, social media, graphs charts, ads, etc). As I sci tchr, 15% of my grades is categorized as literacy to meet NGSS & CCCS. We learn sc prefixes & suffixes all year, write and analyze texts #caedchat
#Caedchat Sorry I am late! Too much fun ordering a surprise for a friend's bday. Kim from SoCal. K-12 Digital Learning Coach. Hoping to recharge with my tweeps before a busy week!
A1: At basic level, ability to read and write. But more than that, ability to articulate meaning clearly. Ability to dig deeper and write clearly, growing as Ss grow in age and learning. I use this to challenge Ss to stretch themselves. #caedchat
A1: Literacy, the art of words, the reading, writing, interpreting and inspiring of language. I take every moment I can get to show Ss the power of words and how they can leverage that power like the mentors we study #caedchat
Literacy in reading means that Ss can read, decode, comprehend written text. We have a teaching responsibility to ensure that are Ss are literate. #caedchat
A1: Literacy has four main components: (1) the ability to read, (2) the ability to think critically about content, (3) the ability to put into context content, and (4) to understand that the more you read, the better you will comprehend when reading. #caedchat
Literacy in reading means that Ss can read, decode, comprehend written text. We have a teaching responsibility to ensure that our Ss are literate. #caedchat
A1: Literacy is the spine of learning...being able to read, write, think, communicate about a topic. Fluency within the topic. Literacy is the great unifier in education and learning. #caedchat
Great point @JenRoberts1. Literacy is apart of everything we do. It should never be put into a separate box! It is integrated into our daily lives #caedchat

Literacy implies a broad appreciation for multiple genres and disciplines. It is not just reading and writing. I learned as English teacher that it is important to make cross-curricular connections #caedchat
A2: Cross-curricular literacy is about acknowledging and integrating the various forms of authentic communication that happen within and among the academic disciplines. #CaEdchat
A2: Cross-curricular Literacy is when our Ss transfer their reading literacy to other content areas, using academic vocabulary correctly. It means that our Ss understand the content they are learning. #caedchat
Yes, and also each discipline should be aware of and teaching the literacy of that discipline. Being literate as a mathematician, and a scientist requires specialized skills too. #caedchat
A2: If we start with literature, then cross-curricular literacy integration connects stories to other content areas. It becomes a launchpad for appreciating the inter-connectedness of the world & learning. It gets us out of silo thinking #caedchat
A2: Cross-curricular integration is the integration of multiple subjects in order to provide Ss with a more purposeful, real-world learning experience. It's important because life is not lived in one dimension and neither is learning.#caedchat
Hi #caedchat - late arrival! David, HS English teacher and writer, Palo Alto
A2: the disciplines in academia are artificial anyways - good to cross over whenever possible
A2: Cross-curricular Literacy is when our Ss transfer their reading literacy to other content areas, using academic vocabulary correctly. It means that Ss understand the content they are learning. It is important for Ss to apply and to make connections in all content #caedchat
A2: Cross-curricular literacy is the ability to reason and understand concepts in any subject. This is critical because it is exactly what common core asks of our students everyday. Coming up with just the answer is now only the beginning. #CAedchat
I'm also fascinated by the way academic terms mean different things in different subject areas. Words like degree, theory, and lots of others change meaning based on context. #caedchat
Yes! The carry over is huge. We need to set the same expectations for written, verbal and other responses across the content spectrum if we want to keep the kids accountable!

A3: I think Ts need to see the connections between their subject areas. Elementary Ts do this often. I took all the "practices" and related them to the ISTE standards. #CAEDCHAThttps://t.co/QXQb5kqvOA

A2 Cross-Curric Integration is when their is collaboration among instructors to make literacy seamless so not just an ELA Thing. My team has agreed to use claim evidence reasoning when we support with text, practices or research. #caedchat
A2: cross curricular literacy approach is teaching in a real world way. Ss will more than likely not have isolated subject lives or careers so it’s important we teach them in a way that is relevant to the real world. #CAEdChat

A3: Asking students to analyze, reflect, report, explain, etc. is asking them to engage with the process of what and how they are learning. This flexes their literacy muscles. #CaEdchat
A3: My first thought is to think through a real world activity: cooking, tearing down a bike, etc. Then tie in the academics. I’d like a year off to do this. #caedchat
A3: reach out to other teachers to share what you know, expand what you know. I think integration is natural when the teacher is curious, aware, prepared
#caedchat

It is a great question. I humbly offer that a combination approach may work best. For example, learning algebra in sequence. Or understanding how osmosis works at cellular level before applying it as a literary metaphor. #caedchat
A3: Reading necessary in all subject areas! Right now my reading instruction is embedded in a science inquiry unit on wildfires, born of Ss Qs about spare the air days— non fiction reading, vocab, parts of speech, phonics— all part of wildfire unit #caedchat
A3: Ts have responsibilty to help Ss and Ps see cross curricular connections, both explicitly and implicitly by asking ?s, helping Ss reflect, creating and encouraging projects across disciplines #caedchat
A3: Examples. I have Ss read outside texts (news articles, etc.) and write letters, reports, essays, stories, etc in history and science. Mat Ss also read and write curriculum specific pieces. #caedchat
A3: reach out to other teachers to share what you know, expand what you know. I think integration is natural when the teacher is curious, aware, prepared
#caedchat
A3: Ts can support literacy through their day by consistently making connections between different subjects’ terminology and the variation of the language use in each content area. This is a true boon for ELs. #CAEDCHAT

I love it when students write to interpret graphs and other data. My students do this in a unit at the end of the year, but I like this source for graphs to write about. #caedchat
Q3 collaborate with a focus on what standards & skills integrate well in your subject matter. Don’t see as just another addition. Everyone uses literacy or academic language. Reading/interacting w/ #EduProtocols has helped me develop new ways in my Sci class #caedchat
A3: All Ts can talk about the importance of being able to clearly communicate and comprehend text. Ts can provide opportunities to overtly make connections so students understand, seek and create new connections: Precedes innovation #caedchat
A4: The role of technology in cross-content area literacy is the manipulative capabilities. For example Ss could create a pictorial representation of various terms that multiple meanings depending on which subject they are used for. #CAEDCHAT
A4: I’m a big fan of any tool that helps students communicate their learning in words, spoken or written. So, Google Docs of course, but also, Google Voice, Flipgrid, Google Forms. #CaEdchat
A3: Ts can support literacy integration in all areas creatively integrating core concepts from content areas using real life math problems, for example. Project-based learning and STEM activities are some examples, where various content areas are covered. #caedchat
A3: Opportunity lies in collaborative unit planning. Start small. Have English & history teachers: Great Depression study by also reading Grapes of Wrath. Have science and math teachers collaborate: physics integrates with statistics. Lot so #PBL possibilities. #caedchat
A4:Tools such a google classroom, hangouts etc. provide students to practice the exchange of ideas, reflection on their work, thoughts ideas as well as others. #caedchat
A4: tech is a tool that allows for self expression, creativity, and personalization to meet the Ss needs. But we have to remember. It’s just the tool. The Ss are the driver. #CAEdChat
A3: I think by aligning subjects for example when learning about Native Americans my class is reading picture books about indians as well as legends. In science we are learning how Natives did things. #caedchat
A4: I love having my students use G Suite tools to practice literacy. Discussions in G Classroom, Blogger for authentic audience, Sites as digital portfolio, Slides for ebooks, etc. #caedchat
This educator has been doing it for years. The content is current and relevant. We have great conversations about the topics! It also provides students an opportunity to share their own thoughts on the subjects.
A4: Technology is the tool for expanding the classroom beyond the 4 walls, breaking barriers, enabling growth, reinforcing creativity and exploration, and presenting a limitless possibility. Doing with a focus on the attempt regardless the result, is the best tool #caedchat
A5: That is where PBL or 20% time would come in I guess. I also think Google Applied Digital Skills and CS First come in handy...writing across disciplines. #CAedchat
A4: Tech tools are invaluable in special ed. Remember when textvto vouce costed thousands & you scammed into proprietary formats. CK12 eBook & ReadWrite tool allows my Ss to surpass limitations. #caedchat
A5: I prompt them with questions such as “what do you do at the grocery store? In music don’t you read and write?” I hope that they will come to the conclusion that reading and writing is not limited to ELA. #CAEDCHAT
A5: interesting question. My Ss luckily do not think that way. Infact they would much rather read/hear a story then have to take notes I look forward to hearing from others on this question. #caedchat
A4: Google Clasroom has allowed a steady flow to incorporate the G Suite tools. Ss can read, write, peer review, collaborate... It is my go-to. #caedchat
A4: I love having my students use G Suite tools to practice literacy. Discussions in G Classroom, Blogger for authentic audience, Sites as digital portfolio, Slides for ebooks, etc. #caedchat
A5: It is a fact that many students as well as adults aren’t reading books for pleasure or otherwise. This adds to the challenge for educators to find a way to create relevance for Ss. Many prefer YouTube to get, and give info #caedchat
A5: Connecting students with business/industry leaders/experts and apprenticeship/externship opportunities is one way to disabuse them of the notion. #CAedchat
A4 My Sci curricula portal @amplify integrates rich texts, reading RFPs & writing Reflections/Final Rpts/Rpts to Engineering Team after work in lab & simulators. Ss learn 135 Sci prefixes all year w/ @quizlet@quizizz@IXLLearning Quia #caedchat
A5: I think I would respond by reflecting on my own teaching practices that would possibly make a S think that. Then adjust, adapt, and evolve my own craft. #CAEdChat
Q5: Students should read and write about scientific research. #socialstudies Ss need to read historical/current events and write arguments. All careers require the ability to read and write within their fields. #caedchat
I read part of a book on dyslexia. It describes reading as an acquired human skill. Therefore one that could be lost. Talked about increased use of video. Fascinating. #caedchat
Q5: We use CPM, students often have to justify their reasoning. Once I started using The graph of the week, these questions & comments....are not there. They can see the relevance of explaining their point of view in writing. #caedchat
A4: Technology is the pencil of the digital age. But solid pedagogy and deep content knowledge make tech work to effect in the classroom. I love how https://t.co/thJd88GcnK makes it visually easy to establish connections between ideas #caedchat
A5: I try to highlight the importance of words in everything we do. It makes the idea that reading and writing in a separate context is obsolete. #caedchat
A5: We all use language to communicate our ideas and defend our thinking, whether we are scientists, psychologists, or mathematicians. Luckily in elem kids buy into this idea easier since they spend all day with me #caedchat
A5: Students should read and write about scientific research. #socialstudies Ss need to read historical/current events and write arguments. All careers require the ability to read and write within their fields. #caedchat
A1: Literacy, the art of words, the reading, writing, interpreting and inspiring of language. I take every moment I can get to show Ss the power of words and how they can leverage that power like the mentors we study #caedchat
A5: I try to highlight the importance of words in everything we do. It makes the idea that reading and writing in a separate context is obsolete. #caedchat
A5 Learning requires literacy everywhere. All the cool teachers are serving it up in their classes. I actually get that question more about math then ELA in my Sci Class. #CAEdChat
Great point about elementary. When I started as primary grade teacher, I used to love the ability to integrate teaching into integrated thematic units. #caedchat
A5: I was taught a writing activity. Ss wrote out a list of important life events. I share mine first. They pick from it throughout the year. They made me cry: watching mom take the call about the death of a grandparent, why can’t parents stay together. #caedchat
For Open House, I have Chromebooks for parents to use so that they can browse their child's Sites. They love it and are so proud of their child's work. I also have them fill out a Google Form after they look through the website. #caedchat
A5: I've been doing a lot of writing and sorting of problems with design thinking in the classroom. You can get more hesitant readers and writers excited when they are developing empathy and solving problems for others. #caedchat
We use National Geographic Reach for Reading in @CajonValleyUSD in elementary school. It is a complete reading program that we implemented this year #caedchat
There is no debate at this point among scientists that reading is a skill that needs to be explicitly taught by showing children the ways that sounds and letters correspond. https://t.co/A7yfcpAfBS

A6: This year, Ss are starting podcasts. Scripts in G-Suite, then record. Blogs to support podcasts will he done on Blogger. Topics span the curricula. 1/2 #caedchat

A6: Ss are also creating videos, such as book trailers. Read them share. @WeVideo Using @CNN10 to spark writing and reflecting on current events. 2/2 #caedchat
Very well developed scaffold for argumentation and critical thinking. I also like the team approach. How do Ss share their position with each other? #caedchat
@Glynn_ed and bring Read Alouds to life with readers. She's done some amazing work by connecting readers with the real world; bringing in people books are based on, completing activities in the community that were read about in books. Getting Ss excited about literacy! #caedchat
A5: Id tell them. After a certain age punctuation is less driven by rules. It’s tells the reader how to express your story. When to breathe. When shout. When to rattle with snare from precision. I think it mDe the# pay attn to the conventions MORE. It became meaningful. #caedchat
A6: I’ve always enjoyed lessons taught by the BAWP. You can find out more about their lessons here: https://t.co/JuWBCk3JHy I have a favorite on revision for October, but I will have to search for the lesson. I’ll find it & attach it later. #CaEdchat
A7: My #pln in general. Sorry if too broad. Being a #connectededucator has influenced my approaches in a myriad of ways. Difficult to pinpoint one or two right now. #caedchat
I share it in G Classroom and let everyone edit. Each team takes a slide. Here's the template: https://t.co/8VRlT9yjVs. Feel free to use and adapt. #caedchat
A8: @EdCampSD is right around the corner! Hope to see many of you there! Also, the first @CUERockStar ELA Camp is happening in December! Another great opportunity to collaborate with fellow educators! #caedchat
Thank you to everyone who joined the chat tonight and shared your thoughts. You are what makes #caedchat great! See you next Sunday with Moderator, @CohenD
