#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd tonight we wanted to ride the wave of energy caused by election day and channel it to developing and fostering the civic mindedness of our students
We hope that everyone has had an opportunity to cast their votes and are planning on remaining active in the process tomorrow once we wake up to the results #HipHopEd
civic-mindedness are actions, activities or individuals that are motivated by or that show concern for the public good or humanity as a whole. Doing community service and running for public office are examples of activities motivated by civic-mindedness #HipHopEd
What are some of the ways we can engage a key component of our population that isn't old enough to vote but still must be heard, around civic mindedness? #HipHopEd
Penned this new manuscript. Emotional lyric writing as youth action research about systemic issues of particular importance to them. A call for educators fo use mixtapes for civic-mindedness #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/RBe2fX88Fn

Our students need to be aware of how their actions and voice matter. When we are studying data in mathematics, we need to be giving students real data to analyze, bring in civic-minded conversations, let them study & understand their own local data #HipHopEd
We need to begin creating councils under our local government where these students can go and give their views to the adults who are old enough to vote. That way we not only let their voice be heard we are also prepping them for the day they are old enough to do it on their own
#HipHopEd our seniors are spending the trimester designing civic action projects — some relate to suggested policy changes on topics like gun control, drugs and the criminal justice system. (That crew can change the world!)

Teaching social responsibility is character development. It’s imperative that we embed this into our classroom, adult learning and school culture. #HipHopEd
They can't vote but they can still lobby local law makers to legislate in their favor. They need to understand that civic participation is more than voting. Writing letters, marching, the arts, etc. are all powerful tools in a democracy.
In schools, we need to be more willing to give students a voice in their own learning. This means allowing them to collaborate with educators at all levels. If we really want to know what students need, we need to ask them, and then listen. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd I definitely agree on the idea that civic mindedness is more than just voting. It is being informed on the issues and the candidates that are running and encouraging/educating those that are old enough to vote to do their civic duty.
#HipHopEd students from @EdUncontained@Hungry4Access last month discussing the economic pyramid with @tdj6899 — tomorrow they meet again to discuss connections between social justice and lyrics as we build out our HHE program.
Schools should teach students how schools are funded and held accountable by “the powers that be” and allow the Ss to see where their voice can come into play #HipHopEd
What's good, #hiphoped? Watching election results from suburban Milwaukee where I live and teach. I'll say this--my HS students are so much more civic-minded and politically aware than I was as a teenager in the 80's. #TheKidsAreAlright
There are social justice issues that can be addressed in every content area. Provide students with the opportunity to address and share their perspectives on these issues with their community #HipHopEd
Plan a student and community 4 action event. Discuss key issues to ensure that Ss voices are heard & transmitted to ballot boxes via those old enough to vote. #hiphoped
During morning circle we discussed power & perspective. We also shared one thing we would like to see change in the world. Their responses were indicative of issues affecting their communities & issues affecting other People of Color. #HipHopEd
Get your students engaged with critical analysis & deep diving into arguments. Bars come from a thorough and thoughtful engagement with the issues & contexts. #HipHopEd
Push your district/charter for student leadership programs where Ss can engage with school board members & advocate for policy. And don't just pick the "model" Ss. #hiphoped
My students looked at demographics, key issues, media coverage and polling in swing districts: trying see if they could figure out how people vote before the election tonight! They also had to volunteer locally to compare the different ways of engaging with elections #HipHopEd
Great comment! I work heavily w my city councilwoman n local mayors on social justice issues n invite my students to the events. Many have become volunteers at the events n organized their own! I also always have some sort of social chg event requirement in my classes. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd engage Ss in #PBL focused on civic action. Weave in all content areas...co-teach across class periods if your school schedule doesn’t naturally allow 4 this and crate space for Ss to share with public/parents+family
Great question! We can't be going to sleep after the election! We must stay aware & involved, especially in our local communities. We need to talk to students about our local systems of government - city council, school board, district attorney, etc... #HipHopEd
Have Students bring up issues that have within their neighborhood and then create maps that go from the issue being resolved back to the stages of leadership that have to be addressed to deal with the concern #HipHopEd
We are watching #13th in class & breaking down the arguments while exploring the logics of racism in the US. @ava expertly uses @PublicEnemyFTP & hip hop throughout to make her points. #HipHopEd
All the ideas mentioned here are great ideas, especially city youth commissions that are invested with real power. Some youth are directly advocating for the right to vote starting at age 16 as well. #HipHopEdhttps://t.co/ff5qZidWvA
Have Ss learn about the voting process & civic engagement early on - elementary/middle school. Discuss issues related to their power in determining policies that effect them - even if they aren't old enough to vote! #hiphoped
W/ ss representation matters! If they can't see it, it's hard for them to believe it. When thinking about how to make ss more involved in voting& politics we should consider inviting ppl in the classroom that they can identify with that are politicans & voters. #hiphoped
How do you stop the shaming of political activists? When people protest or march, they are called troublemakers or accused of being lazy and not working "like normal people". #HipHopEd
I'm holding people to their word. I think students need to see that candidates may or may not do what they campaign on, for a multitude of reasons. The faster students can see through the rhetoric and focus on the facts, the better they will be. #HipHopEd

This election seasons has taught me that students of this generation want and most importantly, will demand to be heard. If we don't foster those voices in a positive manner, we are missing a key opportunity. #HipHopEd
As an instructional designer, I am very mindful of the images I choose to illustrate online courses. I also sought new narratives of what a successful business person should be/look like. Representation matters. #HipHopEd
Work for yourself or an organization? Lobby for youth inclusion on the Board of Directors &/or in an Advisory capacity. They know more than we do about Ss related challenges & issues. #hiphoped
#HipHopEd I currently volunteer at an after-school club with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and they are very heavily interested in Gender and Sexuality and the rights of LGBTQ+ people/students!
Ask Ss what they want to see in their own community. Create lessons focused on the streets they navigate daily. I'm 35 and just now learning about significant history in my city of Houston, TX. #hiphoped
This. In Mx we prepare people to compete internationally. Many of our students have relatives in the US, or are preparing to move. We need to stir away from anglocentrism when teaching them about International politics, economics, or business. #HipHopEd
We have to talk about civic engagement in context. If you know what movements did before you, you can build off their work instead of starting over each time. #hiphoped
Also, S/O to @norarahimian for being an international business woman of color. Just knowing she exists made my experience designing an International Business course a lot more enjoyable. #HipHopEd
Civic engagement has to be about the action, but it also has to be about the outcome. We have to talk about impact & effectiveness if we're serious about making change. #hiphoped
I think showing the impact of how voting affects our everyday lives is important. We are raising kids who will never truly understand Obama and were raised in a Trump era...keep that in mind. #HipHopEd
You don’t have to start from scratch, Civic Mindedness is a great way to bring the community into your classroom as historians and project partners #HipHopEd
As a #HipHopEd (ucator) civics ed must be embedded throughout your pedagogy & not a one-off unit or lesson. Hip hop is something you live. So is engaged citizenship.

We talk about the whitewashed history of Milwaukee in class. The construction of freeways in the 60s that decimated Black neighborhoods and created the geographical segregation that persists today. The suburbs that were sundown towns. #HipHopEd
Ask Ss what they want to see in their own community. Create lessons focused on the streets they navigate daily. I'm 35 and just now learning about significant history in my city of Houston, TX. #hiphoped
If you allow students to create a list of things that are important to them and then have them research what role politics and poli-tricks play in them #HipHopEd
Using their cell phones, have youth do some ethnographic research in their communities via interviewing residents/activists on the front line about their perspectives on issues that matter to them.#hiphoped#civicengagement#HipHopDev
Whenever my high school students would complain about the problems at their school, I would ask "what can we do to solve that? how can we work on this?" my goal was to teach them how to problem solve and take action #HipHopEd
Civic engagement starts with including the people who are most impacted: via visual representation, as planners & decision-makers, on platforms and podiums. #hiphoped
Providing Ss with opportunities to vote inside the classroom is actively teaching civics. Having Ss justify their voting is equally as important. #HipHopEd
In my US history classes we do a unit on mass incarceration & compare it to more restorative models like those used in Norway. Gives students perspective and something to fight for #HipHopEd
Focus on the local community. Students often have a hard time imagining a world that isn’t accessible. Focus on how students can rally to create local change. #HipHopEd

You don’t have to start from scratch, Civic Mindedness is a great way to bring the community into your classroom as historians and project partners #HipHopEd
Civic mindedness is getting Ss to attend community board meetings, particularly the youth committee. This is an entry way to opening conversations on decision making. #HipHopEd
Whenever my high school students would complain about the problems at their school, I would ask "what can we do to solve that? how can we work on this?" my goal was to teach them how to problem solve and take action #HipHopEd
Civic engagement means switching up lesson plans when opportunities arise. Put the plan on hold to take my students to see this talk about First Nations “removal” & local history. #HipHopEd
This is so important. Voter turnout is so much lower for local elections & these are the elections that most immediately affect our communities. #HipHopEd
Focus on the local community. Students often have a hard time imagining a world that isn’t accessible. Focus on how students can rally to create local change. #HipHopEd
I love this! I always heard about the Civil rights movement in the southern cities we always teach. But there was history in my own backyard I was never taught. And all 7th graders are required to take Texas History. #hiphoped
Civic mindedness is recognizing Ss as stakeholders in the school community. Are Ss apart of the decision making process at your school? And not just the SLT... #HipHopEd
You have to also make civic engagement relevant to their needs. Some understand poverty, others may not and feel more inclined to lgbtq rights. Once you begin with their interest you can expand off of that. #HipHopEd
Love @APlusSchools TeenBloc program: https://t.co/jRdlZgWmkP was happy 2 be invited and proud to see Jhaunie this summer stand up for what she believes in and develop a plan for action. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Thank you for having me on this wonderful chat! I definitely learned a lot about how to get my students involved in civic engagement and why it's important to teach at any age!
This is so important. Voter turnout is so much lower for local elections & these are the elections that most immediately affect our communities. #HipHopEd
It's also important to seek alternative solutions that benefit their whole community. Let students see that just voting and following the majority does not solve all their problems. How do you voice minorities? #HipHopEd
We have to challenge the definition of “political.” What messages students deem as political based on the ecosystem of their neighborhoods must be valued #HipHopEd
Thinking of a scholar who said “she felt inadequate in a hyper white space”... we dug deep and I encouraged her to never stop speaking up and to use her voice even if it shakes #HipHopEd Then we listened to some J Cole to woosahh ✊🏽
We cannot rely on a system that was built by and STILL fueled by systematic and institutional racism to create "change"
We CANT rely/depend on a problematic 2 party system that has HISTORICALLY disenfranchised AND exploited Black/Brown folks on both sides of the aisle #HipHoped
Civic engagement NEEDS to move beyond voting and create spaces where Ss can develop and explore critical thought.
Move Ss into developing action-oriented projects that explore civic engagement on a deeper, less performative level.
#HipHopEd
And what does power look like in those communities? I always ask students if those holding power in their hometowns I.e. superintendents, mayors, Board members etc look like their community. I often hear a hell no and that they want to go back and change that #hiphoped
Yes, Texas history does not nearly cover the history of our state. This is where we need to dig deeper and visit local historical societies, museums, & groups that work to preserve the history of local areas. #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd here are some of my scholars’ definitions on what it means to be BLACK. From here, we will create together a reality that includes them in the world: Living. Thriving. Free.
And often intertwined+ connected
Re: Brazil + Israel. Steven Bannon + other white supremacists have been consulting their fellow white supremacists in power, training law enforcement in these places.
Need to explore the intersections, links AND the disconnects + compare #HipHopEd
Civic mindedness is addressing the historical practices that exists within schools and actively seeking ways to dismantling practices that are harmful to Ss and their communities #HipHopEd
Encourage Ss to ALWAYS speak up & speak out! #unapologically Let them know how important their voices are in the politically process 4 change. #hiphoped
Note to self: Think long and hard about what it looks like to decolonize our perceived notions what civil engagement has looked like historically, and what it can look like. #HipHopEd
Civic mindedness is providing Ss with different new sources and having discussions around the importance of how to critically engage with various sources #HipHopEd

I'm about to close my computer and shut off my TV. Be good to yourselves tonight, family, and try not to let election results stress you out too much. Get some sleep. The struggle will still be there in the morning. #SelfCare#HipHopEd#GoodNight
yes....! #sicking Bannon talked about his global populism stance tonite in a debate with Frum. Agree, we must closely examine the interconnectedness. #hiphoped#hiphopdev
