Hey Syndee Malek coming to you from the shores of Harry's Pond! Not quite sunny and 72, but it's got @JulieMytych in the house! Looking forward to tonight's chat!

Becky, principal from Marysville! Donning my #MEMSPAchat T-shirt from @MrDomagalski and @mschulte50
Checking in from I75, about a hour north of Dayton on our trip to FL!
A1: Student Voice means students are involved with having a say in "happenings" in the school. SIP, Culture, PTO, programming, events, etc... Always better to have S's involved. #MEMSPAchat
A1: ss voice means letting ss say what is on their mind without judgement. Also to me means giving them tools to help them find their voice. Like technology, writing skills, speaking skills #memspachat
A1 Student Voice means not only creating opportunities for students voice to be heard,&/ choice to be made, but actively listening and acting on what you hear - it’s power and true Learning #memspachat
A1: Student voice means empowered kids sharing, creating, leading and collaborating! Students have voice when they are a part of the lessons, not just the recipients of them!! #MEMSPAchat
A) #MEMSPAchat Student Voice is just that, creating a space for students to share thoughts, ideas, questions, opinions...am I anywhere close @RickJetter@RebeccaCoda
If a goal is student voice, who’s listening? Lots of responses here make it sound like grown ups but it seems to me we have to help them listen to each other, thoughtfully. #memspachat

Student voice is giving students an opportunity to have a say in their own learning. Education seems the only entity that often disregards voices of those it serves. A1 #memspachat
Hey #MEMSPAchat! Checking in late, but happy to join in! Kate here, elementary principal in Mendon.
A1: Student voice involves adults being active listeners and empowering and encouraging our students to have a safe place to share their opinions and ideas.
A2: This needs to be a part of the schedule. Have an way for students to plan and have a say in things happening in the school. Weekly, monthly, SC meetings, etc... They need to know your coming, then listen, then react based on THEIR needs. #MEMSPAchat
A2: We are currently utilizing student voices to help more than our school...they are solving community problems too! https://t.co/5eM8udG2y6#memspachat
A2: Is ANYTIME too general??? I think the teacher must facilitate the learning and guide the Ss in the general direction (using content standards) but it would be amazing to allow the students to choose the vehicle and how they consume that content. #MEMSPAchat

A3 - good project-based science (I’m not a principal) encourages student voice throughout learning! More schools should use this to change school environments! #MEMSPAchat
A2: By creating an environment for students to have a voice, it should always be welcomed not only in formal discussions but also in casual conversations. Empowering students to have a voice fosters ownership with our students. #MEMSPAchat

Joining late tonight, Randy Muffley here.
A3- This year we have been part of @PosProject which has really created great conversations from students about #OtherPeopleMatter and how they can apply the idea. Amazing conversations
A3: They love to share about things they know, their experiences, something they are "experts" in... if they don't think they are experts in anything, help them find their passion and give them those experiences!! Help them have stories to share. #MEMSPAchat
A3: Students love to talk about their experiences and interests. Even if it's something that we don't know anything about, giving up some of our time to listen is invaluable. I love the excited/amazed look they have when they teach me something! #MEMSPAchat
A4: We have to model proper collaboration as adults. We cannot activate student voice and show them how to participate if we do not welcome and listen to ALL voices in our buildings #memspachat
A4) Student voices may express something intolerant to others: https://t.co/EMwHp9owzB
On the other side, perception of family, community attitudes that are less tolerant than classroom voices may stoke fear of backlash.
#MEMSPAchat
Teachers have so much to do. How do you help them help Ss to access their voice in their learning? You have great ideas for this “extracurricular you” but what about in the subjects? #MEMSPAchat
Challenges might come from students' inability to share their voice due to fear of humiliation or suppressing it for too long. Speaking out is a learned behavior that our systems have been disregarding. A4 #memspachat

Wait for me! Wait for me!! I am here! So sorry to show up to the party late. Glad to join @RickJetter and @RebeccaCoda, and all my #memspachat friends. Allyson, fresh on spring break and from Zeeland, MI.
Some could view student voice as challenging without proper modeling and structure, but there are many great strategies to support student voice and facilitate amazing conversations...even as young as Kdg. @lchambless#talkmoves#memspachat
A4: We have to make sure we're modeling openness with students and their ideas for our teachers and staff. If we don't, we miss the chance to maximize the impact that empowering student voice could have on the culture of our building. #MEMSPAchat
A4: Accountability to curriculum for one. There are content standards that have to drive our instruction too. There is a scope and sequence! We have to be aware of our expectations on a larger scale... #MEMSPAchat
A5: Some things get too political, especially lately. Need to take caution on some things, or think about how we brioche some ideas, concepts, or views... #MEMSPAchat
A5) Yes, when issues that are HR issues, staffing concerns, confidential I guess...might be good for the staff, maybe not for students. Something to think about. #MEMSPAchat
Teachers have so much to do. How do you help them help Ss to access their voice in their learning? You have great ideas for this “extracurricular you” but what about in the subjects? #MEMSPAchat
A5: Yes, there are topics that developmentally inappropriate for children. However, if children bring them up, we should hear them out and do our best to answer questions in a way that meets them where they are at. #MEMSPAchat#letstudentsspeak
YES! For the kid's sake, an adult should not be discouraged by the lack of support of other adults. But it also does not absolve the responsibility of other adults. No kid should be cast off by any one. #MEMSPAchat
A6: Nothing should really be out of reach, but for kids who have experienced trauma it is best done one-on-one or journaled. The message should be that all problems can be solved with the right help. #MEMSPAchat

A5: A well structured, intentional "adult" conversation shouldn't be off limits. Ss like it when they are taken seriously. Also, many of these topics effect them too. #MEMSPAchat
A5: Sometimes when you think a topic is "student friendly" students take things in a different direction very quickly. It's imperative that we are focused and actively and carefully listening/ questioning/facilitating the discussion. #MEMSPAchat
I think we are talking about people here, not robots that can be turned on and turned off. I understand the terminology, but our language reflects our thinking. Are there any topics where kids shouldn't participate - yes, staff relationships, for example. A5 #memspachat
Yes! So many times they want adults to listen and accept the bad with the good. I agree on the journaling and narrativizing their thoughts! #memspachat

A6: There are times when adults at school are "too busy" to hear Ss out, especially when there is a discipline problem. And especially with repeat offenders. ALL students deserve to have a voice, every time. #memspachat
In order for students to feel comfortable sharing their voice, teachers must build a climate that allows kids to feel safe and able to take risks without judgement. #MEMSPAchat#LetStudentsSpeak

A6: Unfortunately yes, but mainly w/high school students whose ideas challenge the status quo. Adults find it hard to admit they are wrong sometimes. #memspachat
I have the same trouble with "empower" -- even though I use the word. Kids and all people have power inherently until they're supressed. What we sometimes call "empower" is just not suppressing them. #MEMSPAchat
A6) When I first suggested students to participate on School Improvement and Title 1 teams. @SaraShriver13 has a powerful video of the importance of Student Voice #MEMSPAchat
So true! As adults we like to have answers for everything! Sometimes students just need an ear to listen! It’s surprising what you can learn.#memspachat
A6: Unfortunately, yes. So many times students that I'm talking with about a discipline issue say "they wouldn't even let me explain!". It's often hard for some staff to give our toughest students the chance to have a voice. #MEMSPAchat
I agree! There are no limits to listening. The limit lies within the judgement of privately getting the student the right emotional support either administratively or counseling. We are listening for improved customer service! #MEMSPAchat

Yes, many times. One subtle example is not letting student evaluations of their teachers affect teacher evaluation. I heard many times students complain about the same teacher and nothing is ever done. Who matters most? A 6 #memspachat
Okay my #MEMSPAchat friends! I am going to hop over to #IMMOOC to get ready for the chat. Hoping to see you there! This is the last chat for #IMMOOC 4. It is going to be a great one!
Thank you @RickJetter@RebeccaCoda for a GREAT chat, looking forward to reading #LetStudentsSpeak
Heard from Ts today about how discourse and argumentation (S to S) is one of the most critical and useful means of formative assessment. #MEMSPAchat@Syndee_Sue@starrscience
If a goal is student voice, who’s listening? Lots of responses here make it sound like grown ups but it seems to me we have to help them listen to each other, thoughtfully. #memspachat
A7: Continue to model and encourage others to take a step back and allow students to have a voice. Share celebrations of students having a voice and making an impact #MEMSPAchat
Have better scheduled ways to have student have input in SIP, School Culture, $ spent from PTO, etc... They need guidance, but it can happen! #MEMSPAchat Thank you for the inspiring chat.
A7) Modeling, like @vickilwilson5 does in her school...show others so they can see, feel, and hear what it looks like...once they are comfortable, baby steps! #MEMSPAchat
A7: I've invited staff members to sit in on restorative circles to actually experience the way students express themselves, their feelings and their needs. It is powerful for adults to hear. #MEMSPAchat
