Christina Tondevold, The Recovering Traditionalist; Idaho; PD facilitator; Happy to be facilitating tonight!!!
I like connecting with other Ts from MN! Kind of neat!
Hi, Tracey! Glad to see you!
My questions were too long to fit in a tweet so I'll be posting pictures with my questions for
I'm not too far from you guys! Spirit Lake, Iowa!
It is great connecting with MN 1st grade teachers! How long have you been teaching 1st grade?
We just introduced these as a tool to our college class working on manipulatives!
A1: Understanding how numbers work in relationship with other numbers
A1: Sense of quantity and conservation
A1:NCTM: Number Sense is the understanding of number... & ability to use understanding in flexible ways
A1: I think of a ss that knows the number patterns, before/after, and how they work together
This is my 4th yr & my teammate and I are team-teaching so we have 41 kiddos. How about you?
A1 Understanding numbers & relationships, making connections to solve number problems, more than rote counting
A1 counting, relation-ships between numbers like 5s and 10s, number facts
A1: 1:1 counting, forward number sequence/backward, identify numbers
A1 Making sense of numbers, how they can be used and manipulated to demonstrate understanding
A1: Quick identification and meaning of groups or objects and how they relate to numbers!
A1: understanding that num. are more than a symbol and being able to understand relationships between numbers and manipulate them
Awesome! I'm seeing lots of "flexibility, relationships, more than rote counting..."
Subitizing:) https://t.co/1Iit0R43uo
A1: Quick identification and meaning of groups or objects and how they relate to numbers!
A1: Number sense means different ways to represent numbers, numbers before and after, and how they are related
A1 - knowing how numbers and counting "work" - comfort in playing with numbers, making reasonable estimates
A1: I'm currently taking classes to get a math certificate & number sense is forward/backward sequencing, number ID, & decomposing
A1: # sense is a Ss understanding of build/decompose the #, how that # works in relation to other
1st year teaching 1st grade. Previously taught 6th grade last year and 2nd grade 3 years prior to that.
Q1:Students have a good understanding of numbers and what a number means including place value.
Do you often say some ss don't have number sense? What are they lacking of?
Love subitizing! We have a Nearpod created for Ss this week! Math RtI here we come! :)
Stephanie from Ottawa, CAN
Personally, I LOVE the 4 Number Relationships from Van de Walle (et, al) book, we will be investigating them in a few moments.
A1 knowing how numbers work, number patterns, making ten in different ways, being flexible w/numbers
Math RtI! LOVE! Some kiddos need it so much!
A1: I look at number sense as a deep understanding & a literacy of numbers, the construction & deconstruction of numbers
a little bit of everything! Only kinder & 1st here! .. 1st is where I belong!!
Hi, Stephanie! Glad you are joining us!
A1: Number sense is just that...what do they know about numbers & their meaning.
It is but luckily I taught 2nd grade before so I was prepared for teaching routines and handling little kiddos
I moved from 6th to 1st this year as well. It's a bit of a culture shock😜
Bless your heart! I could never teach kindergarten!
A2: if ss don't know what number comes next or before it's hard to add/subtract and then with place value there's no understanding.
Q2: When students don't have number sense they lack the ability to recognize when an answer doesn't make sense.
A2: NS is the basis of everything. Without the solid foundation (like a house), the walls, windows, doors, roof etc will crumble.
A2-if Ss can't visualize where numbers are it makes it difficult to add and subtract
Q2: for example - subtracting and getting a larger number
haha! Isn't it great, though?
A2 It's the foundation needed for more advanced math skills. Ss w/o strong number sense end up with gaps later on
A2 Ss rely heavily on counting one by one when they add. No strategies.
They aren't able to see relationships or struggle with decomposing/demonstrating numbers in various ways
A2 NS is the foundation for all strands of math, need good solid understanding
A1: Nothing is more important than number sense. It is foundational to being able to reason, to estimate, to do calculations
Have you taught any lower grades before? What was the biggest culture shock? Mine was shoe tying, 2nd graders can do it
Sorry I'm late...Ann Elise Elementary Math Specialist from Berlin, NH.
A2: number sense is the foundational building blocks for future mathematics! So important to help Ss develop an understanding!
yes! They look at you with a blank look when asked "What's one more than 12?"
A2: I see number sense as setting the foundation for Ss mathematical journey. Same strat translate to advanced topics down the road
Number is a symbol to them, not quantity that can be manipulated.
A2: Ss lacking number sense don't realize errors in problem solving as they struggle with number relationships.
A2: I agree it is the foundation! Impossible to do any mental math either. Difficult to "see" the answer in their heads!
A2: When students don't have number sense yet they can't see relationships between numbers and how they work together.
side note: we do maker mornings & shoe tying is a choice. We have a QR code w/ video to support Ss
Q3 We are going to investigate 4 Relationships from the book Teaching Student Centered Mathematics, here's… https://t.co/mJmwcW3ZQQ
A2b: Pv, division, multiplication, fractions, decimals, % all require strong number sense skills
What does your maker mornings include?
Decomposing numbers is one of the most important ways to develop number sense. If they can do this fluently, kids are on their way
Students can count to 100 without being about to recognize printed/physical or represent using manipulatives.
A3 Subitizing number talks with dot cards. Flash a card for 3 seconds and ask what number & how they saw.
A3: Working with my Ts on Number Talks - beginning with dot cards to promote subitizing
A3: subitizing () this week and drawing dots on the #'s to show the relationship of the = sign
Mandy, elem in TX. Just saw your chat...
A3: Number Talks with dot patterns and number talks with dots on 10frames.
A3: dot cards, OSMO math dot game, dominoe games I need some more ideas on this
A3: We use 10 frames, quick ID and number missing often!
EXACTLY! They try to apply rules rather than understanding.
Would love to hear more about maker mornings!
I have seen this strategy within the kindergarten curriculum but not within the first grade curriculum directly.
A3: We play subitizing war & count on w dice during early fluency games
A3: We subitize (sp) each & every day through a variety of games & challenges. I start w the question of "what do you notice" a lot
choices for building, making, creating, exploring .. Exs: legos, magnetix, cup stacking, drawing, etc.
Awesome to see Kinder curriculum with number talks! So important in first as well!
A3: I have to get back into subitizing with my students using domino cards, ten frames and double ten frames. So important!
I played Compare with 1st graders last wk. We used # cards w/pic supports, but I have dot cards if necessary.
I love the count on with dice. I'll try that!
I taught K for 3 yrs, but it was 17 yrs ago😜Shoe tying & constantly being needed are the biggest changes😊
building, creating, making, etc. Exs: legos, magnetix, building, puzzles, etc.
love OSMO and dots is great! https://t.co/VyT9i0K25B
A3: dot cards, OSMO math dot game, dominoe games I need some more ideas on this
A3 lots of games and activities with dominoes and dice
do you have a link for the game?
Loving that people are familiar with Subitizing using dot patterns (dice), ten frames....how many have used rekenreks????
I love that idea! How long do you have it for? So important but difficult to fit into busy schedule!
I'm so impressed and happy to see that you're exposing pre-serv Ts to Twitter chats
I love can you use it without Ss accounts? Is this a lesson that's free?
I need to get better with number talks! More focused on Ss explaining their thinking this yr though.
I also have tile math, ss just did finger tiles and struggled with knowing how many fingers were showing w/out counting each one
A3: using individual math boxes filled with base 10 blocks, number lines, and counters
I have a rekenrek! So many great ways to teach structures of 5 and 10! I wish this was still common practice.
I have! My ss explored with rekenreks last week. They discovered many features of rekenreks.
oh like the subitizing war idea!
we use rekenreks as well as dot cards during our number talks
A3: Our Ss can use their manipulative of choice to show understanding: Rekenreks, ten-frames, number bonds. Cool to see
the idea came from I turn their whole group fluency suggestions into workshop rotations
I do it as a warm up. Only takes about 5 minutes:) That's all they can handle too!
I have for the past 3 years! Rekenreks are to show different ways to represent a number or get an answer.
Ts receiving K's in gr 1 who have had Number Talks notice such a difference in understanding & ability 2 explain their under.
A3: Our subitizing tools include: dice, dot cards, ten frames & real life examples such as eggs in a carton, chocolates in a box etc
Q4 We are investigating the 4 Relationships from the book Teaching Student Centered Mathematics, here's 2n… https://t.co/tkmExRcDuO
Roll & color and roll & add are two popular games in my room
I love my Reknrek I have a large one like you do. It really help to illustrate numbers betw. 5s, 10s, 15 & 20
A3: Parent volunteers made rekenreks with 20 beads for all our Ss K-2 (about 300)! Use it for so many reasons!
Our k's and 1’s use them https://t.co/djqc6ctYo6
Loving that people are familiar with Subitizing using dot patterns (dice), ten frames....how many have used rekenreks????
I use rekenreks! We really like them when we add/subt to 20!
A4: Work on the hundreds chart w mystery number, dice games, dates on a calendar, days of the week.
every morning! Ss enter classroom from 7:25-7:45, so they have 20 minutes
Angela, visit blog. She has a ton of info there.
We use rekenreks quite a bit. Love them for having students see numbers in different ways.
I just don't see them utilized as often as a classroom resource. Need ongoing PD in early numeracy.
we do a lot with the hundreds chart. But then I also have ss struggling to find a specific number on the chart.
We use colour beads and string to make two counting tools. One is for counting by 2's to 20 and the other is 5's to 100.
A3: We build personnel number racks to use.
A4 - bunny hop game using number line, 100's chart activities using manipulatives or coloring, Roll to 50 game
you must have everyday math like we do
A4: we do "today's number" which is a daily exercise adding and subtracting, and showing the number in different ways
A4 roll a die/two dice and cover the number that's one more or one less.
We build up to 100...right now we're at a 30s chart until the majority are overly comfortable with the numbers.
A4: I haven't used any activities yet so looking forward to hearing some ideas!
A4 use subitizing card, but tell me one more or less than shown.
trying to do more work with the calendar this year. Just recognizing & pronouncing 27th is difficult & confusing when learning #'s
That is awesome!! Thank you! Definitely using that!
for those of you using 100s chart, check out post https://t.co/xyChcBLmxJ and Number Find app to see if kids really get it
A4: we do have strings with colored beads to help with skip counting by 2s, 5s, & 10s
Missing so much trying to make dinner and chat 😖
A4: I use Kim Sutton songs to practice one more/less, two more/less, doubles, etc.
Oops, forgot https://t.co/PqDPnyBD6I
A4: Ss use unifix cubes to build a number - break of one and discover 1 less and add to discover 1 more. Also use 100s chart and number line
Wow! Kids don't start coming to our rooms until 8:00 and we have announcements at 8:20.
we also have a few other ones too - I can DM them to you!
A4: We do Cold call with +- 1 or 2! Say a number they quickly call out the answer based on preset skill.
love the concrete model of the concept. It's sooo hard for some students.
A4: I get the kids up and build a person number-line adding and subtracting and the kiddos decide who comes or leaves the line
Curious, what math curriculum/program does everyone use?
Sorry I am late, just got home
We start so LATE compared to you! School starts at 8:45 and goes until 3:25 in our school
A4: Like Count around the Circle from Intentional Talk
we switched to early time this yr (so happy). We used to start at 8:50!
Q5 We are investigating the 4 Relationships from the book Teaching Student Centered Mathematics, here's 3r… https://t.co/WpyFQLc9lS
We use videos to do counting while being active. 'Count to 100 Everyday' & others that count by 5's & 10's
I love those songs! They really work!
That was us last year! Switched based on lots of research. So thankful!
We just got EnVisions math. We looked at Go Math last spring.
We use math expressions but as a resource, also starting Advantage Math.
A5: Ten frames, number lines, rekenreks, number talks...
We go from 8:20-3:13 so we about the same length of days.
A5 Like using 5 and ten frames, hundreds chart and the learning carpet
or Eureka math as some call it!
We're in Yr 2 of I really like it; most effective when I use a workshop model (T group, fluency, etc)
A5: songs, youtube videos, tally marks, touchpoints on coins,
Thank you! Spent a lot of time on your site today, making number bracelets also for decomposing.
A5: Five frames, ten frames and double ten frames are my go to
We have EnVisions - but use it as a resource and bring in a lot of our own stuff!
- our district uses Everyday Mathematics
A5 Number talks on 5 & ten frames. How many dots do you see? How many more to make 5 or 10?
A5: We use 10frames, numberlines, rekenreks, and Number Talks using dot patterns...also love Cuisenaire rods.
A5 lots of work with ten frames, rekenreks and number lines
Make 10 frame on the floor using the tiles and tape. They practice c by 2s by jumping forward and back. Also a 100's one is great!
Does anyone have any awesome resource for a "math by myself" center at the elem level? I have some but could use more :-)
A5: morning calendar exercises has a leader who leads the class counting on hundreds chart by 2s, 5s, & 10s based on days in school
I learned about the touch points on coins last yr and thought it was brilliant!
A5: 10-frames, # talks, compose/decompose the day
A5: decompose/compose many ways for benchmark numbers: Shake and Spill, number bonds, number bond bracelets, draw pics, 10-frames
I love touchpoints for adding/subtracting and money
Very similar in my room https://t.co/o6lueelfxc
A5: morning calendar exercises has a leader who leads the class counting on hundreds chart by 2s, 5s, & 10s based on days in school
Love all the ideas! Being a 1st grade T for only 20 days means I'm gleaning far more than I'm sharing 😜
A5: Ditto! https://t.co/3DwMKBOor6
A5 Number talks on 5 & ten frames. How many dots do you see? How many more to make 5 or 10?
Love seeing lots of use of 5 & 10 frame, rekenreks....anyone know about number paths instead of number lines for begin 1st grade?
we use math games for math my myself
I liked having them work in a math journal for that thinking about things from class that day, journal promote etc
currently I use this as computational practice or Sprints! I could use more ideas too!
We just switched to EnVision math this year.
Do you have technology? Our kiddos go on to Front Row and do individualized practice. Super engaging and awesome!
I can hardly wait to hear more!
Hi all! Sorry I'm SOOO late. Time got away from me-packing lunches 4 boys, laundry & more. SOrry! Sara from WI checking in for 15"
I learned from you, Christina! No more confusion when they are adding & subtracting! https://t.co/a8sDWiW0OF
Love seeing lots of use of 5 & 10 frame, rekenreks....anyone know about number paths instead of number lines for begin 1st grade?
Number lines are a measurement model, Number Paths are a count model...they actually give kids something to count.
A5: I love the Friends of 10 video by ! We really stress ways to make ten! Also use Friends of 10 from Pinterest!
I am starting my 3rd year and I am doing the same! 😁
Wish I could take credit but majority of my activities come from ideas shared from staff/on Twitter
Switched from K to 1st this year and I can't seem to get it together to join on Sunday night! I'm Jen from Indiana
The best Ts are always learning😊You're a good one!
It is a Common Core math curriculum put out by Pearson.
Most of the time kids just count the 'tick marks' on the number line and don't understand it is the distance from 0
I'll be doing some investigsting😊
Yes use a number path that help Ss see numbers in boxes, a number line is more abstract,1st Ss aren't rea… https://t.co/Ot5C6pwBew
Love seeing lots of use of 5 & 10 frame, rekenreks....anyone know about number paths instead of number lines for begin 1st grade?
I have a weekly reminder on my Google Calendar ;)
This makes good sense! It explains the trouble they often experience with fractions & decimals later on too!
Hi, Jen! Welcome to I will archive the chat also:)
They are missing subitizing. The ability to recognize a number without counting one to one to one.
That is still a problem in 7th grade. Distance on number line (spaces) vs 'tick marks'
I have not heard for friends of ten videos....is it free....I'll be checking it out. Thanks for the share https://t.co/RWkvkQqIi7
A5: I love the Friends of 10 video by ! We really stress ways to make ten! Also use Friends of 10 from Pinterest!
Love Math Racks! I ordered mine from
Q6 We are investigating the 4 Relationships from the book Teaching Student Centered Mathematics, here's la… https://t.co/blktm0lLxN
I highly recommend taking Christina's Number Sense Course. Best Math PD I have ever had.
All of his songs are fabulous! We use his Morning meeting song every morning!
A6 This past week my ss used red and yellow counter chips to decompose numbers 6-10 and discussed the number of possibilities.
Mine good w a number line and they have to put their counter on a certain #. I have 2 # lines in my room. More they see = 👍🏽
A6: making 10s, I like singapore math part/part whole lessons, I use the vocab even when we start adding,
. A6: number bonds, unifix cubes, spilling two-colored chips, drawing pics
Luv "guess my part" Ss split 10 train & hide part
A6: We use those number bonds daily. They are so helpful! Also added a body clap to show p-p-w. Slap, slap, clap above head
A6 Shake & spill w/ two colored counters. Fill in the number bond, write a matching sentence.
A6: LOTS of manipulatives, numberbonds, and capture their thinking w camera app on Doodlecast https://t.co/F1LGkzFQpX
I need to come spend a day with you friend!!
A6: We're obsessed with finger flashing fun right now - quick way to decompose during calendar time https://t.co/oVhem0jsm9
A6 I got these great plastic plates with 3 compartments at Dollar Tree this year. perfect for part part whole
I know! Isn't she awesome? Don't miss the webinar link that I shared also.
A6: 2-sided counters, shake & spill, snap cubes, lego, dominoes. More exposure the better.
Thanks I plan on show my Ss this week. Love the title Friends of Ten. very creative
Seriously so much goodness tonight. I have learned a lot!
Legos! Of course! Love the idea:) https://t.co/sSOUINONMX
A6: 2-sided counters, shake & spill, snap cubes, lego, dominoes. More exposure the better.
Have a fun week with your Ss...math ROCKS!
A6 Using all stated manipulatives & acknowledge all different ways to represent an answer. Ex 3 on top & 1 on bottom or 2 top & 2 b
roll dice and Ss hide answer behind their back and show on the count of 3 .. we talk about multiple ways of making a #
