#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Our Hip-Hop Radio personalities have done pretty good by us EBro & the Breakfast Club & Sway all use their platforms & talk about taking better care of ourselves #BeHealthy#HipHopEd
In self-care, it’s important to learn that it’s okay to ask for “help.” Also important to cultivate a community where asking is not frowned upon. #hiphoped
There should never be the thought of “I can’t afford to do something for myself” the truth is “You can’t afford not to do something for yourself” #HipHopEd
Connecting is part of self care! Reaching out helps me remember that we are not alone in our perceptions and that we are not crazy for seeing what others also see. #HipHopEd
What's your go-to self-care hip-hop song/experience? For me, "Quiet Dog" by Mos Def and "We The People...." by @ATCQ. Also pretty much anything by @kendricklamar. #hiphoped
Important to develop “proactive” self-care practices instead of “reactive.” Would be interesting to consider how #hiphoped could play a role in developing this consistency.
"Cause young niggas be dying of old nigga shit
Wifey sleeping in the guest room cause you snore at night
It’s like 40 years old is 3/4 life" #ExpensiveGenes#HipHopEd
Self-care isn't always about feeling good. Its about doing the things that are good for you, and sometimes that's difficult and uncomfortable and painful. #hiphoped
I make it a habit to practice self-care regularly! I 👏🏾don’t 👏🏾play 👏🏾those 👏🏾games! Stress and the like will NOT take me out! Also, I can’t be my best self for my wife, family, and fellow educators if I don’t take care of myself #HipHopEd
Our chat is a space where we can take the weight of our identities and professions off and simply build off of one another for the betterment of one another #HipHopEd

Self-care is asking yourself what you need, and then giving those things to yourself. Its showing up for yourself, even when you might not feel like it. #hiphoped
HipHop provides us to connect with artists who have gone through similar experiences. This allows us to reflect on and interrogate these experiences for clarity and self care. #hiphoped
Self care means taking the time to re-center, refocus, and rejuvenate so we can always bring our complete selves into the classroom. Students deserve us at our best! #HipHopEd
As an educator, we want to be there for our students, but we also need to be there for ourselves. Having a chronic disease, #Endometriosis, I have learned that sometimes I have to take time to rest & practice self-care. #HipHopEd
I’m definitely diggin the Self care topic this eve. many facets: the mental, spirtiual, and physical. For me..starting around early 30’s, more attention to health: rest, diet, exercise. To the latter, having motivating music helps too:
https://t.co/3A2rQXfYJf
Self-care also is about being aware of who we connect with in our buildings. Actively seeking out positive people to surround ourselves with (admin, support staff, faculty, paraprofessionals) is key... #HipHopEd

@chrisemdin#hiphoped well-being must be multidimensional, beyond only bio psycho and neuro, here in evalutile we work 11 dimensions of being for integral well-being! family greetings! #hiphopedchile
We have to practice what we preach. We cannot expect our students to take care of themselves when we don't take care of ourselves #hiphopandhigheredu#HipHopEd
If you are investing in a child’s self-care you have to invest in their parents as well! Don’t forget that parents are our children’s first love #hiphoped
Self Care can begin with bringing our who selves into our classrooms and other work spaces. We must model self care for our students and other colleagues #HipHopEd
Not just artists/MCs but other Hip-Hop practioners too. Bboys/girls, DJs, cultural producers, etc all translate the culture and trasmit emotion & experiences thru their respective art forms. #HipHopEd
HipHop allows us to connect with artists who have gone through similar experiences. This allows us to reflect on and interrogate these experiences for clarity and as self care. #hiphoped
#HipHopEd makes us strong, self-aware and self-accepting. We become more aware of microaggressions towards us and our community. Also, it connects us with people who care. This is self care.
Yes! I have an intentional practice of being unapologetically myself in all the spaces i occupy. That's as much about self-care as it is about challenging expectations of what "expert" and "professional" are. #hiphopedhttps://t.co/yPSLy6dDmg

The narrative around educators is that we don’t work hard and that our days are not long. Don’t let the narratives that society places on us stop us from taking care of our minds and bodies. #hiphoped
If you are investing in a child’s self-care you have to invest in their parents as well! Don’t forget that parents are our children’s first love #hiphoped#hiphoped@chrisemdin@TheRealHipHopEd
I used to retreat to my office and record a quick verse after I heard my principal say some detrimental ish about students and my work #HipHopEd Do you have space at work for self care?
When I’m feel stressed or Anxious I stop everything and for a few moments I sit silently, close my eyes and listen to Sade or Kanye’s 808’s & Heartbreaks album. Find out what works for you. #hiphoped

Both of these. There are times when I get home I need to sit in the car and take a few moments to blast some music & get right before I transition from work to home #HipHopEd
@tdj6899 great topic. Thinking about the core tenets of #hiphoped culture esp related to expression and movement—two things people surely don’t do enough. Critical to be among your people to express, rhyme, dance. Be. Most of the time it’s me and my kids and it’s live.
I advise school leaders to have two mental health days for teachers. A day with no students or structure to allow teachers to catch up on work at their own pace #hiphoped
“Stay far from timid. Only makes moves when your hearts in it, and live the phrase: ‘Sky’s the limit.” B.I.G #hiphoped#SelfCare@chrisemdin @TheRealHipHopEd
Self-care is pulling into the parking lot, music on blast if you feel like it 🤷🏾♂️. I’ve pulled up to my building many-a-time with anything from Biggie to Al Green to Hezikiah Walker blaring if that’s how I’m feeling lol #HipHopEd
@TheRealHipHopEd@tdj6899@chrisemdin today I had lunch with my seniors! Sometime I have to chat with my students in a "non-graded" atmosphere in order to get to know them. This allows me to reassess my approach to my students and get to know them #HipHopEd
Sometimes, self care is asking the students to step up and lead. Being honest with them about where you're at teaches them healthy life skills. #HipHopEd
Nothing weird about planting a flag in your day. I take 7 deep thoughtful purposeful breaths in the shower every morning. Not concerned with schedules or anything else for that moment. Then I can invoke that peace at any time in the day. #hiphoped
An ideal situation 4 classrooms 2! Edus need focus on self-care&bring tht vibe into class spaces, providing a happy medium of self-awareness&understanding that stus come from a variety of situations. The weight of their identities need space&opportunity 2 build, learn&grow #HipHopEd
@chrisemdin Present in essence, in transcendence and in cosmovision, we are a mark and we leave a mark where we go, our students are the reflection of the mirror that we are with them. #hiphoped#hiphopedchile
Self-care is that fresh haircut (or hair do) and automatic confidence boost that comes with it. You KNOW you feel extra good when you hop up out of that chair. Am I lying?? ✨💇🏽♂️💇🏽♀️ #HipHopEd
We think professors have all the time in the world, but when we are working against that tenure clock we’ll find ourself doing everything at all hours of the day. #hiphoped
Schools that value moments of self care for educators and students, value the role of the school counselor to help create healing spaces. Can't have one without the other #HipHopEd
In hip hop in flow, the trance of the limbic system is activated, where all of human nature lies, and which we know of applied neuroscience? much theory, little practice, what good contribution is neuroscience to education! #hiphoped
I'm so grateful for how instrumental #hiphoped and authentic PD like Hip Hop in the Heartland has been for my own self care and mental health journey, personally and professionally. Many of these Tuesdays are literally therapeutic for me. <3
Self-care can also be about being honest with our students when we’re off. Sometimes showing a little vulnerability helps to reaffirm the trust we want our classrooms to be based on. Family is about that give and take relationship... so should our classroom families #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd another self care practice I’ve found some success with:
digital dieting and unplugging.
(much easier said than done, lol)
Having extended periods offline, notably socmedia. Plus a lil dieting of notifications + regulating blue light intake (helped with better rest)
“I woke up this morning. I WOKE UP THIS MORNING! gotta smile when I say that s!%* (Ahhh !) I woke up this morning.” —“somewhere in paradise” — Chance the Rapper paradise is the classroom, keep it alive! #StayWoke#hiphoped@TheRealHipHopEd

FAM! Do you know the art of Parkour displacement? eco urban culture promotes creative languages of unmatched healing power and generator of environments where everyone wins! #hiphoped#hiphopedchile@chrisemdin
Self care is also about engaging in those things that you enjoy doing outside of the school building-completely void of the profession - that allow you to rejuvenate and build the self. #hiphoped
Communicating with many adults in my life who were once teens in my program is a form of self-care because they make it their business to make sure that I’m taking care of myself #HipHopEd#FamilyTies
Self care can also be a collaborative effort. Take a day in class to have students check in with each other and you. It can be organic or guided by an issue you’ve noticed happening with your students. #HipHopEd

I've given myself permission not to care about IG, no matter how much people say its "necessary" for work. I unfollow folks if their feeds don't make me feel good. I put my phone away when i'm with people. #hiphopedhttps://t.co/kpdmwfbKL8

So many facets of Hip-Hop in which you can exercise #selfcare. For me it might be readin Coates or Baldwin's works. Then laying the needle on a Illmatic, 4:44, Tribe or KRS vinyl. I find comfort in the teachers validating the necessity of me being an educator. #HipHopEd
I now work in instructional design for undergrads, grads, and adults in continuing education. I like adding content and activities that they can comment with their peers and friends and family. #HipHopEd
My wife and I drive to and from work together so that we can decompress with one another and enter into our home in a state of peace and love first and foremost for each other and our children #FamilyFirst#hiphoped
the art where everybody wins is healthy for all the diversities, not only for the strongest ones,if we talk about multiple intelligences, let's talk about multiple bodies and personalities, like for example the enneatypes of people! we are all worthy of our diversity! #hiphoped
Sometimes being vulnerable, I mean really vulnerable... like tears, and realness and authenticity, is what it takes to realize that you need to take a minute for self-care.. exercise, a good book, a long cry..#HipHopEd#self-care
I give my permission to let people know that if they want to understand they should read some articles before but talking to me. #HipHopEd#HipHopEdTherapy
If you have to view self-care as a job requirement because you value your profession over your personal confession, it’s a start. Over time you will realize that there is only one you and we need you whole #HipHopEd
The teacher who is an eternal apprentice always inspires his students, since he shows his vulnerability as the student, less arrogance more learning for the whole life of those who claim to be teachers! #hiphoped
We have a ways to go but I'm happy to see the destigmatization of seeing a psychologist, psychiatrist or another type of counselor. During these times many are called to exercise phenomenal levels of resilience and excellence. It's important to get things off ur chest. #HipHopEd
Self-care is not protecting your sensibilities towards protecting your whiteness. Nor towards protecting the sensibilities of cishetero ableist patriarchy white supremacy culture ! Doing that does more harm than healing #hiphoped@chrisemdin@TheRealHipHopEd
I love my office door and seeing how scholars use chalk and paint to express themselves, while leaving affirmations for themselves and other community members #HipHopEd#selfcare
Bring that vibe straight into the classroom. Maybe breath 2gether b4 class starts?... “I have to find a way to understand the space that I’m in & how I’m feeling at the moment. ’Cause if I don’t, it’s gonna zoom.” --> https://t.co/ABk1L0zmHt Worth a read & applicable... #HipHopEd
This chat is a labor of love so it is a form of self-care because my family knows that I wouldn’t be myself if I wasn’t spending this hour with my cyber family on a weekly basis #hiphoped
I am amazed at how many of our responses mention family and friends and community as part of self-care. It seems we are very aware of how, even as individuals, we understand ourselves as part of something bigger. And that is also healing. #HipHopEd
Self-care for me is being able to let go in the classroom and just laugh with my kids... When we get bogged down in directives, testing, and curriculum we forget that first and foremost we are helping to shape the next generation... and their outlook on life #HipHopEd
Not to mention that we are accessible, through tech, to students, parents, and administrators 24/7 in a way that didn't exist in the very recent past. We need to give ourselves weekends, weeknights, whatever's reasonable, away from checking email. #HipHopEd
Ive recently tried paint by numbers canvases and its helped a lot in detaching from the school day, decompressing, and getting back to feeling whole for the next day in my classroom #HipHopEd
The teacher who promotes that the error is another movi-certain because it is true that you are moving and that teaches you in a vivid way, generates environments where everyone but feel comfortable,we are comfortable for self-improvement and empower the collective good. #hiphoped
From Rozay to CombatJack to Fredo to Dolph to Ye to SeanPrice to Phfie to Prodigy to Pun to Pimp C to Yams to Lighty to Heavy ....The battle is on all fronts #HipHopEd Heed the signs, pray, grind, build, get woker
While we’re on Self-Care; be very intentional on the energy you surround yourself around, how people communicate & what they communicate about is crucial. Also, accept that silence is OKAY! I spend 15 minutes nightly in a dark room letting go of toxic energy. #HipHopEd
Recently introduced to the phrase "Im not going to take that on" and its helped me to focus when I'm feeling the school stressors and anxieties getting high. #HipHopEd thank you @AmyLIllingworth ❤
Something to do in a classroom &/or at home is make a Self-Care Top 5-10 List! Could be music, movies, exercises, reading material, whatever helps you chill/destress. Maybe over the course of a month (or however long), use something from everyone's list each day... #HipHopEd
In my first year teaching I’ve had trouble finding the right balance of self care. I’m also taking classes too so time is limited but playing ball with students on Fridays has been a save. #HipHopEd

The education process is like a plant it needs water, sunlight, food, etc...if the teacher is the sun to make the process grow...the sun sets daily, many teachers never stop...understand this concept #HipHopEd

So if they never stop they get burnt out...so we have to allow space and time for a replenishing to occur...so new ideas and concepts can be formed, that way our kids GET WHAT THEY NEED #HipHopEd
Self-Care means recognizing goals and expectations while leaving room for growth and learning. It would be a poor way to practice self-care if you left no room for learning so you don’t make the same mistakes.. a method that I model and share with students holistically. #HipHopEd

One of the outcomes of education must be the self care of the students we teach. If students aren’t becoming better by what we are teaching them then it is on us to change #HipHopEd
Many do, it’s just they struggle with expectations they are given as well. It’s easy to gloss over things when you are being given specific instructions as well #HipHopEd
I see a bunch of posts about the vocal booth... lol... writing is self care... the booth is my therapy session... you bob your head to my diary entries and call it music... #HipHopEd
