Q1 What does collaboration look like in your classroom?
Q1 What does collaboration look like in your classroom?
I'm Tammy Farlow, math-8th grade and Spanish teacher, Southwood Jr. Sr. HS, MSD Wabash Co.
R1: Collaboration is busy, sometimes noisy, productive, and energizing!
that's a could tool. Love the ability to get transcript & shared resources
R1: You can feel the enegy when you come in... hear chatting, working together,
Q1: there are let's of ways. It could be allowing peer editing of research papers or working on a lab in class.
Deb from Angola HS world language teacher looking forward to Collaboration; adults need it too
Chris from Bloomington, IN. Teach world history for online HS. Trying to do double duty with & tonight. Oh, and IU bball.
R1: Collaboration Math: Ss discussing and explaining their processes and results. Spanish: conversations, filming projects
I love that energy that collaboration creates! https://t.co/qqWlM5FYOd
R1: You can feel the enegy when you come in... hear chatting, working together,
R1: it's organized chaos. It is expected to look and feel sometimes uncomfortable. It is productive though.
R1) In my online classroom, it looks like comments on Google Docs, posts on Padlet walls, etc.
It's important to nudge Ss out of their comfort zone while still honoring their pref. learning modality! https://t.co/H8jgHPTmo1
R1: it's organized chaos. It is expected to look and feel sometimes uncomfortable. It is productive though.
R1: collaboration in my classroom is usually centers. Talking, learning & lots of fun. A lot of times it's a game
R1: My Ss and I really like padlet, too.
Hi ! Chantell from Angola, a little late but I made it!
R1 I have kids everywhere in groups, on the floor, talking & discussing
R1: With Google, you can share, edit, etc with anyone ANYWHERE
Organized chaos is my favorite way to describe it!
yes...K is very busy and can be noisy but that is how they collaborate and the excitement runs HIGH
R!: My favorite collaboration rt now is in my Coding class--we are all equals in the class-teaching each other.
Center time is one of my FAVORITE ways to collaborate! My Ss learn so much from one another.
I've never taught K, but I've spent 5 yrs with firsties! Busy, noisy, and exciting!
R1: I think it is important that collaboration is student driven, not teacher driven
I just got our coding club rolling, and I am LOVING the excitement and collaboration!
A1 Love how Google docs enable collaboration without having to rearrange desks. Have a group of seven co-writing a story start!
I LOVE this part of K. Collaboration is how they learn!
Q2 What are your favorite digital tools that facilitate collaboration between Ss? Between Ts and Ss?
R1: Collaboration is movement, choices in seating, noisy, and hard to spot the teacher amongst the collaboration!
Yes, yes! We will chat seating arrangements in a few. Can't wait to hear your classroom plan.
R2: GAFE with Google Classroom=instant, constant collaboration
R2 I love using Canvas for T/S collaboration. I often use QR codes for my Ss to access S created content and then offer feedback.
R2: Students love using Google. I also foster collaboration using Canvas through message boards and threaded discussions
R2) Google Docs, Padlet, Diigo, email. If still working f2f, sounds like Remind is great for connecting w/ Ss & Ps.
R2: Google Docs, cameras on our laptops
R2) Google Docs, Padlet are two favorite digital tools to facilitate collaboration.
R2: Echoing everything being said about Google. Also, Padlet-we post our IDR books weekly and students start chatting books.
R2: I love that my Ss send me messages via their Canvas inbox. They feel in control of their learning!
R2: I also kick it old school and use CPS remotes to allow students to learn from one another.
D'oh! Forgot to mention Canvas. That's our LMS - guess it's just so basic to what we do that I didn't think of it. :)
Checking in late Curt Schleibaum from Seymour .. TechEd
Q2 What are your favorite digital tools that facilitate collaboration between Ss? Between Ts and Ss?
R2: My Ss are loving as a way to share work and to see each others work.
Your LMS can be a powerful collaborative tool in the classroom! Maximize the potential. https://t.co/JOKsG59rma
D'oh! Forgot to mention Canvas. That's our LMS - guess it's just so basic to what we do that I didn't think of it. :)
Too busy celebrating all of the awesome Ts in your house? :) Congrats to Summer! Glad you are here!
Q2: We Kidblog with a sister classroom in Cincy. Ss post quick writes and comment on each other--a whole new level. +Engagement
R2: Agreed: my favorites Padlet and Google Docs.
a2 as said, love how Ss collaborate silently and I can track history to see degree of participation quantified
R2: collaboration between Ps and Ts though email and through our student management system (Skyward).
R2 I use Slides a ton! Each student or group have a set of slides to share & comment on I distribute via classroom so I can see
R2: the more parent/teacher collaboration, the better. Had PT conf tonight. I send a message every week to my Ps about work
is a fantastic collaborative tool!
Q3 Let's talk room arrangement! How important is classroom arrangement in collaboration?
Q3 Let's talk room arrangement. How important is classroom arrangement in collaboration?
R3: Many of our students need practice in carrying on a collaborative conversation. Room arrangement can enhance.
R3: I am still working with traditional desks, but there is the freedom to REarrange any time we want with number needed in groups
R3: I have comfortable spaces w/ futons, moveable end tables, a variety of stools, large tables, desks...I love a mixture.
R3: Room arrangement is a thing of the past. We can collaborate with anyone world wide at any time anymore.
Q3 Let's talk room arrangement! How important is classroom arrangement in collaboration?
R3 Rows do not lead to collaboration. Unfortunately, with 30+ Ss each class, other arrangements can be tricky
R3: my students set in groups w/ mixed ability levels. I use this in hopes that some of my higher students guide others w/ them
R3) Can be very important. Timed Ss getting desks into diff configs periodically so could do so quickly/efficiently when needed.
A3: Rm arr is huge. Wishing we could ditch all desks for tables. I have a combination of both.
R3: This is 2nd year 1:1, last year most classes were traditional rows. This year majority are moving to desk groups and tables.
I just keep stealing and swapping as I can! HA! :)
R3: I can have my kids email experts in different fields at any time. I did this in the past with genetic disease research
R2, GAFE is given but more importunately St email Allows St to have a bigger voiceand keep connections once out of my class
A 4-Q survey helps me ID 1 leader & 1 strong math S (not the same person) to anchor a pod of 4 desks. Stop, drop & help as needed.
R3 I used rows as "home base", then we rearranged...groups, on the floor, etc
R3 Flex seating is so important! My Ss can work from anywhere in the room. Classrooms are looking more and more like Starbucks!
R3 I have tables of 4 Ss and 5 large areas for meeting. 3 lg area rugs a pit and a circle rug area in the room, lots of movement.
R3: my students sit in groups w/ mixed ability levels. I use this in hopes that some of my higher students guide others w/ them
Collaborative conv practice--something I haven't brought to sixth grade from my 4th days.Thx for reminder! https://t.co/NZGvwqpCmr
R3: Many of our students need practice in carrying on a collaborative conversation. Room arrangement can enhance.
yes, my Ss are doing the story starts for our keypals in France to do the next piece & send back for us to add to...
One of my teachers is doing groups of three: 1 excel, 1 ave, 1 striving
Do you assign the Ss at the beginning of the year or wait a bit to see who might mix well together?
Allowing movement is key!
R3 I do pairs or groups w/ my desks to foster collaboration, but now pushing for new tables standing desk etc for more flexibility
Q3 Let’s talk room arrangement. How important is classroom arrangement in collaboration?
Q4 What seating arrangements have you found to be most conducive to student collaboration?
--Yes to standing desks! I have one or two that would love to stand and collaborate!!
R3 and 4: With Google Docs Ss who are absent can collaborate from home and continue to contribute. No 'room' arrangement needed
I bought "jewels" at JoAnn's to give Ss. To talk they have to spend one; stops one from dominating
it's becomes more precise as the year continues
R4) Pods of 3 or 4 worked best for me in f2f setting. Groups of 5 depending on activity. This was with HS Ss.
R4: I did cooperative learning training several years ago. Having them in groups of 4 with eyeball partners and shoulder partner
R3,I believe the best arrangement is turning seatbelt sign off allowing St move around for collaboration https://t.co/1DbXTaS2au
R4: MOVEABLE seating and I use alternative seating... no more chairs are tipping back. I have little spools
My husband just built me a bookcase/standing desk for my office. Would hate sitting all day! Not all Ss like it either
R4 Giving Ss freedom to choose where they work has transformed my Ss ability to collaborate! Even in K they need to do that!
R4: Anything Ss are able to move and customize has been most successful this yr. They love creating their own spaces.
R4: These groups are mixed ability and allow for learning with all different levels.
R4 letting kids get on the floor, lay down, spread out, have room to move & get comfortable Seriously looking to get floor mats
I teach kindy. We took posts off tables. No chairs so kids can sit all around the tables for better collaboration
Special Note: For the most up-to-date Qs, follow or for tonight's chat.
R4: No matter the arr...most Ss want to sit on floor or in comfy chairs to collaborate. Many want to hide in cubby area in bk!
R4: Depending on activity, some Ss are + productive working independently (isolated/no distractions) & contributing on Google Docs
I would love to have those spools!
Nothing like the power to choose! :)
R1: collaboration looks noisy with groups talking around the room wherever the group learns best
R4: I always have those Ss who prefer to work in quiet spaces. We have an "exit room" where Ss can work in quiet partner groups.
Q4 What dig. citizenship lessons are important when considering collaboration in the classroom?
I'm curious--Google docs--do your kids have laptops or iPads?
Q5 Collaboration doesn't always occur within the classroom walls. How do you connect your Ss to the outside world?
I have used these in the past. They do seem to help some. You may also check into balance balls to replace seats.
chatters..this is Q5. https://t.co/RmFZouZba4
Q5 Collaboration doesn't always occur within the classroom walls. How do you connect your Ss to the outside world?
R5: I used to blog before moving to middle school. I want to re-explore that next yr. Skype is also a great tool!
R4: Yes, this is what I meant working independently: this is how some people contribute best to group https://t.co/XQlcLIgYsd
R4: I always have those Ss who prefer to work in quiet spaces. We have an "exit room" where Ss can work in quiet partner groups.
R2: I LOVE using Google apps! I can comment right away, and students can collaborate so easily with shared docs, sheets, or slides
I LOVE and her classroom! Amazing stuff here.
Q5: Having professionals in the field, students in different classes, students in different countries. Options are limitless
A5) I struggle with this one w/ teaching online and privacy concerns.
I have a mixture of both in my classroom right now. Balls seem to work better than bands for my Ks.
Yes! We have to still allow for Ss learning modalities and needs. Collaboration can still be just as effective.
R5: I struggle with this one....any suggestions for kindergarten?
R5 Google Hangouts/Skype connect w/anyone in the world! We chatted with a Holocaust survivor last yr+other classes this yr
Q5 Collaboration doesn't always occur within the classroom walls. How do you connect your Ss to the outside world?
Skypes w/ her Ss. I believe they Skyped w/ middle schoolers today for Read Across America! https://t.co/cIPR5h6qse
R5: I struggle with this one....any suggestions for kindergarten?
R5 We Skype/FaceTime and use .
R4:Mentioned earlier-Kidblog.We connect with a Cincy classroom . Cincy kids learning about country life, NM kids learning citylife
Skype is an amazing, easy tool! Great for bringing experts into the classroom. We are all week for .
R5: I Tweet class happenings: my Ss can't Tweet at school, but I show them that I publicize. Last year I did this more on fb
R3: SO important-students need flexibility! Desks put together to make tables, additional seating, and lots of floor space!
R5: Connecting outside the classroom is a huge key in reaching the Redefinition level of the SAMR model.
A5. The parse Meet me on your doc so we can take a look at what your struggling with.
R5: I do the same!! https://t.co/Lf8NCLNaw4
R5: I Tweet class happenings: my Ss can't Tweet at school, but I show them that I publicize. Last year I did this more on fb
we use Facebook as a school and we follow other school. I share those picture and projects with my kids
R5: Had my HS Ss create "professional" twitter accounts to tweet projects, questions, etc
Q6 What dig. citizenship lessons are important when considering collaboration in the classroom?
got them donated by an automotive co. they were wire spools, I painted them my mom made covers for them
R5: I want to go there. We need to trust kids to do the right things at school with social media. It's a powerful tool
Q6 What dig. citizenship lessons are important when considering collaboration in the classroom?
R5, In our makerspace we have a few engineers that allow us to Google hangout to ask questions its a great way to add community
R6) Being respectful, remembering there's another person receiving your msgs, building others up, golden rule.
Q6 ask about taking others pics or videos
R6: It is important to inform students of proper etiquette. We need to model this for our Ss. It should be K-12
A6: For K teaching to ask permission to take someones picture before animating it on chaterpix
R6: Modeling feedback. My Ss must to reply to 1 friend and 1 other peer in Canvas discussions. Want them to widen their circle.
R6 Digital citizenship in collaboration is exactly like teaching basic rules of working together in other scenerios.
R6: With middle school Ss, courtesy to discuss, compromise, agree, not delete/tamper, with others' contributions to a document
Does anyone think this is the shortest hour of your life??
R6: Respect is key. Also, when discussing a blog partners work--being specific and helpful.
R6 How to Respect Someone's ideas that may not be align with with your own. I see this one most on layout arguments of Slides :)
Always! Especially when I am moderating. It flies by!
R6) in collaboration, it's critical for students to have and share great research and communication skills online
The best Rules! https://t.co/CeHunIUbGR
R6) Being respectful, remembering there's another person receiving your msgs, building others up, golden rule.
R6 Reminders-we should use suggest/comment rather than change someone's work, not to type in boxes/Slides that don't belong to us
Every. Single. Day! https://t.co/5dK4DXtM16
A6: For K teaching to ask permission to take someones picture before animating it on chaterpix
makes an excellent suggestion for a mini-lesson here. https://t.co/1FlPR1ECA7
R6 Reminders-we should use suggest/comment rather than change someone's work, not to type in boxes/Slides that don't belong to us
R6: Since K is the first place for 1:1 to occur, we have a lot of basics to cover and I always remind to be good digital citizen
R5: I do this too! They want to see what is posted and know how to view it (It's linked to our website) https://t.co/fObVny0eKN
R5: I Tweet class happenings: my Ss can't Tweet at school, but I show them that I publicize. Last year I did this more on fb
Yes! Even when I was helping college Ss w/ their resumes, I would always ask if OK to write on their doc.
Do you find it's so much like teaching basic classroom rules? It becomes so ingrained.
R6: We have to tell students that no devices are allowed in restrooms. Pix=Disrespect, bullying. Sad but necessary.
Q7 What methods do you use to encourage Ss who are reluctant to collaborate with peers?
Learned that one the hard way when I had PLTW Ss collaborate on a slidedeck for Open House this year.
R6: Agreed: Our PBIS is Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best: that covers everything https://t.co/H7xCwlN8G9
Do you find it's so much like teaching basic classroom rules? It becomes so ingrained.
R7: Encouragement, but mostly in a quiet, subdued way. Typically these Ss don't want attention called to themselves.
R7: Collaboration online reduces the shyness factor and allows communication to flow.
R7: This is a tough one. Careful choosing of groups. Placing S with a mentor figure. Gentle encouragement.
Yes! This is our first year and I am loving it. It's everyday reminders!! https://t.co/hEEpUAUqsU
Do you find it's so much like teaching basic classroom rules? It becomes so ingrained.
Q7 What methods do you use to encourage Ss who are reluctant to collaborate w/ peers?
R7: I have a few this year that are always worried about what peers will say. We talk about our classroom being a safe place, and
I'm so happy for you! 1:1 is an amazing thing!
R7 Sometimes tech can make the difference. Takes the pressure off +lets introverts shine! Also, general classroom culture building
R7 (continued) the real life applications of collaboration. It's an important and we do it all the time!
R7 I start by sitting at their pod - To S1: "Ask her for help". Then to S2: "Will you answer his question?" Gets the ball rolling.
Great answer. Some St have been burnt by bad collaboration and need a good experience to right the ship! https://t.co/1LnBwHIRsS
R7: This is a tough one. Careful choosing of groups. Placing S with a mentor figure. Gentle encouragement.
R7 Comfort is key. Selecting partners for Ss, being intentional in setting, topic, etc. Esp. in K.
R7: I ask them to try it for half a period. Once they start, I have never had anyone continue to resist
R7: I also think of my son. Social interaction is difficult for him. I think, "How would I encourage him in this situation?"
A7: I will sit with a small group including them and modeling how to collaborate
R7: I use classroom dojo to track student groups. Groups earn points during collaboration time based on the discussion I hear
Definitely! They need a gentle nudge sometimes! https://t.co/lpww2FWek4
R7: Encouragement, but mostly in a quiet, subdued way. Typically these Ss don't want attention called to themselves.
Great idea for students reluctant to collaborate! https://t.co/PzBhPClyEc
R7: I ask them to try it for half a period. Once they start, I have never had anyone continue to resist
R7. Do mini lessons with accountable talk stem (I agree. I disagree) so all have great words to use
K is the same no matter where you are! :) Gotta love it
Q8 Wrapping it up. What is one collaborative strategy or tool you found tonight that you will implement this week with your Ss?
Q8 Wrapping it up. What is one collaborative strategy or tool you found tonight that you will implement this week with your Ss?
R8 I really want to be better at utilizing Seesaw with my Ss! It's so K friendly...I'm not sure why I haven't yet!
R8: I'm going to look into seesaw!
They all get the right start from all of you wonderful Kinder Ts
R8: Continue to model, creating a safe learning environment, allowing movement and empowering students to collaborate.
R8: I have to check out Seesaw also
R8: I am going to Skype with someone this week. It's been too long!
R8: I think I need to reboot Google docs for collaboration--it's been difficult with iPads. Worth looking into.
R8 I know how to use Skype - but haven't yet in my classroom I want to get my students more involved with collab outside the class
R8: I also want to expand the horizons for outside collaboration with businesses and other schools around the country.
R8: I know there's good GAFE stuff for math out there. Need more Desmos Activitiy in my world too.
Check it out, they've had a series of PD in your PJs. Its a fabulous tool for k-12!! https://t.co/jjYd1bGHkn
R8: I'm going to look into seesaw!
R8 FaceTime outside of our building. I have a student teacher in South Africa right now😀
family, thank you so much for a great chat tonight! Indiana has the most amazing, dedicated educators!
R8: Reminder that I need to routinely bring digital citizenship into the mix
Thanks for great chat! Hope everyone has a wonderful week!
