Welcome to the #rethink_learning chat. Introduce Yourself! Tell us your role, where you live, and share anything (word, picture, gif, blog, etc.) that you believe represents your voice!! #studentvoice#stu_voice
A1: Students come to me used to waiting for teachers to tell them what to do...then doing it. I ask my students to form opinions and become part of the learning process. They must unlearn a lot in the process. #rethink_learning
Student voice has to go beyond an instructional voice. Student voice must include wellbeing and how they are currently experiencing life. And how they uniquely think, feel, and behave. #rethink_learning
A1: In my school student voice means the ability to take control of my education. Its a way for me to get involved by being active and opinionated about topics. Having a voice is away for me to become a part of the learning process! #rethink_learning
Isn't it great when your students feel okay about making their own decisions? It is about unlearning and relearning. Thanks @LevineWrites#rethink_learning

A1: One of my favorite always to empower #stu_voice in MS ELA is to use lit circles, where Ss are taught to be discussion drivers, curious connectors and active agents of their learning. B4 trying this, I underestimated what Ss were capable of! #rethink_learning
A1: Student voice is so much more than them having a say. It is asking them to take an active role in the creation of their new ideas and learning. #rethink_learning

#rethink_learning#stuvoice for me is when my Ss can decide how they want to learn , when they have a platform to share their learning . When #studentschoice is part of their learning process.
A1: Student voice means students' opinions and preferences are evident--in what they're choosing to read, write, how they're choosing to share their learning. #rethink_learning
A1) Student Voice is when teachers take on an innovators mindset to empower students to take ownership of their learning, culture, and community in AND outside of the schoolhouse.
#rethink_learning
A1: it's all about Ss talking more - we know we need to teach them HOW to think, not WHAT to think. When I did #inquiry in my classroom, I always refrained from giving my opinion- their voice matters plus they think my answer is the right one and that's not true #rethink_learning

A2: So many students are programmed to stay in a box that was created for them by pat experiences. We must build confidence to break through the box of limits and open students to creative thinking. #rethink_learning
A1) Student voice is providing students with choices for activitives, collaboration, and reflection. In the classroom this equates to personalized learning. #rethink_learning
A2: many Ss are not used to giving their opinions - we need to teach them how to ask good questions. Instead of "do you have any Qs?" ask, "What Qs do you have?" #rethink_learning
A3- Choice boards giving them ownership. We are starting a Chrome Squad to empower our students that are techie. Podcast for students to reflect on their learning!
#rethink_learning
A2: challenges - ensuring they do something/take action with their voice - it's great to have opinions/thoughts but what are you going to do about it? #rethink_learning
Student voice at our school is involving Ss in a conversation. I have set up interactive bulletins and displays to engage the entire school in a discussion.
We have discussed learning goals, favorite books, choice of class pets and favorite part of fall so far..

A2 Student voice requires vulnerability by adults, students might know something we don’t know, and the ability to relinquish some control over how work gets done. Creating a classroom that supports and encourages student voice requires both. #rethink_learning
A2 Classroom control is a barrier to student voice, most teachers are planners and voice and choice often disrupts the teacher created classroom flow I find. #rethink_learning

A2: A lot of times I feel as though there is a social barrier to having a voice for some children. Some kids may have a hard time sharing thoughts and opinions due to fear of being made fun of for those thoughts and opinions, either by peers or by educators #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning A2. one of the biggest Barriers to #StuVoice is the students' initiative ,drive itself. The challenge then is to motivate Ss to have a completely students'led experience. Sometimes it takes a lot to do that ,so learning appears students' driven but it is pushed.
True teaching and learning is not linear of boxed in a neat package. We need to follow the learning, not the plans that lead us in a straight line. #rethink_learning
A2 Classroom control is a barrier to student voice, most teachers are planners and voice and choice often disrupts the teacher created classroom flow I find. #rethink_learning
Q2) Systems, closed minded thinking, fear, need to control and manage students. Education is about leadership NOT management. Leadership is about influencing others to achieve greatness. We must start seeing ourselves as educational leaders. #StartWithWhy#rethink_learning
A2 Adults are the primary barrier. As renowned scholar Linda Camino has said: "adults will find it hard to pass the torch if they themselves have not had a previous opportunity to hold the torch" #rethink_learning#stuvoice
Framing the questions to include all Ss in the conversation.
Providing materials, platforms for Ss to voice their opinions.
Educating Ss how to appropriately respond and interact.
#rethink_learning
I love your resources jerry, thank you for all you do for educators! #rethink_learning These pages are new to me, I can't wait to explore!
#rethink_learning
This is why it is so important to build community and a positive culture in the classroom - many ways to do this (games, icebreakers, community circles, challenges)., Plus you can have Ss turn and talk and jot down ideas before sharing with the entire class. #rethink_learning
I also think it requires teaching active listening and modeling/scaffolding the language of deep questioning. Young learners need to be taught how to recognize and utilize their #stu_voice#rethink_learning
A2b Another barrier is all the learning & internalization of 'normal' school or youth--adult culture by youth. Youth often need to unlearn all the lessons adults and our culture have sent them, in order to fully lean into their voice, capacity, & power #rethink_learning#stuvoice
A3: If we are intentional about having our students become experienced in the ownership of their learning and guide themselves and peers, their voices will be forever meaningful. #rethink_learning
For my whole school discussion, I researched ?s that were appropriate for elementary Ss & chose the ones that were most engaging.
I love using stickers & post its for Ss to respond & they LOVE it!
We are having a large discussion that extends beyond the board.
#rethink_learning
A3: It doesn't have to be complicated. Writing op-eds is a great way to amplify student voice. As the adage goes, the pen is always mightier! #rethink_learning
#rethink_learning A3. sometimes we let them choose their group and the product ...with the same task ...so that also keeps them motivated ...all like minded work doubly hard as they are responsible for their #choices#studentsuccess#studentvoice
A3: Making sure that discussions are guided and giving children time to think out their responses could help make sure class discussions don't get too out of hand! #rethink_learning
A2 When discussions and projects are based on the teacher’s thoughts, it’s not really student choice or voice. Option lists also aren’t as free as we’d hope! #rethink_learning
Student voice means a lot more than just asking Ss to express themselves and giving them platform. It requires you, the T or Admin, to both listen and RESPOND in a way that shows them their voice was heard...and valued. #rethink_learning
A3
Let ss develop rules and expectations for the classroom Let them designate areas for storage of certain items or creativity areas Allow them to rearrange the learning space for flexible seating. Let them choose assignments or make suggestions for projects #rethink_learning
A2 Adults are the primary barrier. As renowned scholar Linda Camino has said: "adults will find it hard to pass the torch if they themselves have not had a previous opportunity to hold the torch" #rethink_learning#stuvoice
A3 In my past work we developed a national student poll on hope/engagement/wellbeing to use it as a pulse measure on how students are experiencing life and school. Educators could address issues early. Teachers can create their own weekly poll #rethink_learning
Q4. What are students doing to amplify their voices for learning? to advocate for what they believe? #rethink_learning- if we start to run over time - jump over to #formativechat to continue discussing amplifying voice
#rethink_learning 3b. That's the easiest thing for my subject,we role play . We assess skills through formatives. So, in their fun learning ways they show a lot of responsibility and ownership
A4: Bring the student voice movement to your school by founding a Student Voice Chapter, and join the effort to create educational environments where students are equal partners in decision-making: https://t.co/eTIC2oWj54@stu_voice#rethink_learning@innovates_ed
A3: it’s what I’d call the most underutilized best practice - self-reflection. Utilize tech to manage when you can, but have Ss discuss what they learned in their own words. This can be the focus of mentor meetings, conferences, etc. Let them articulate. #rethink_learning
A4: Students are getting involved in clubs and groups that promote their ideas and beliefs and they are getting involved in their community through these clubs! #rethink_learning
A4: Students are advocating for value in their education. They are asking for meaningful work that will take them where they want to go. They are asking for feedback that guides them. #rethink_learning
Q4. What are students doing to amplify their voices for learning? to advocate for what they believe? #rethink_learning- if we start to run over time - jump over to #formativechat to continue discussing amplifying voice
Q3 Pay attention to their strengths, how they naturally think, feel, behave and allow them to talk about how the want to demonstrate mastery of a subject or concept #rethink_learning
I believe students should be tracking and owning their learning, setting goals, failing, and trying again. Just like they learn a video game at home! #rethink_learning
A4: many Ss also form #socialjustice and #equity groups in their schools to promote and bring awareness to issues - we need to get more community involvement! #rethink_learning
Thank you, everyone, for such a fast, fun #rethink_learning chat about #studentvoice! It went so quick I couldn't respond to everyone but we will be archiving the chat soon. Save the date for the next chat 9/24/18 on Mindset!
A4: Historically students got engaged with activities like student government to express themselves, but lately I'm seeing a lot more self-advocacy via social media and a push towards more project based learning in my community. #rethink_learning
I agree to a certain degree. For Ss in schools that are top-down, believing in a sacred canon....and filter Ss rather than develop them....they don't even know what to ask for. They have nothing to compare to! How do we reach those Ss and Ts? #rethink_learning

A4) This fall I helped launch a student-led leadership podcast: #AwardWinningCulture
Students can interview and discuss concepts like Character, Culture, Community, Leadership, etc. it’s been the coolest project I’ve ever been apart of! #rethink_learning#FormativeChat

I agree, but also think that sometimes Ss don’t know how to suggest project approaches or pathways. Scaffold this by providing suggestions & also being open to their ideas. Don’t want them to lean too much on my ideas but also want them to be supported #rethink_learning
#FormativeChat hi Aprajita Ralli... jumping from #rethink_learning to here....it's early morning in India and I am excited about these sessions...a burst of learning to Kickstart my day

A1 Handing the keys to WHY and then HOW to the Ss. They want to do real work. Ts are artists who can guide a bit question alongside and dream out loud. #rethink_learning thanks @mjcraw
A2 The false fears of gatekeepers like the @ACT and @OfficialSAT They perpetuate a march to narrow assessments that don’t value student stories or DURABLE SKILLS. #durableskills#rethink_learning

A2: #whatif students co-created the tests and co-designed the assessments? Then the students provided critical feedback on the design and what worked, what didn't work and what they learned. #formativechat#rethink_learning
