Hello #waledchat! Eric from Ontario, Canada. Gr. 4 teacher. Blogging, making Ed. videos, and T & S resources at https://t.co/gwrpfpwcqa
Happy to be part of the chat tonight!
Evening, #waledchat. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado. I'll see them in about 10 days. Mean time, I'm juggling dinner & Twitter tonight.
A1: I feel like I have done a good job coming up with engaging activities for my 6th graders. It will be my first year teaching 6th grade, and I think my tasks are both rigorous and enjoyable for them! #waledchat
A1 Something I feel I have done well to prepare for the coming school year is involving myself in a lot of #edchat discussions...like #waledchat! I have added to my teaching toolkit & grown my #PLN to be a key resource throughout the school year.
A1: I spent a lot of time writing out scope and sequence for my course, which didn't exist until now! I also worked a lot with @MasteryConnect tutorials and created rubrics to tie in to my new foray into standards-based grading. #waledchat
Hello #waledchat Melisa from Ohio teach 2nd & in the car with my family heading to beach & hope I don’t 🤢🤮 due to on phone while moving-gulp... @ChristineBemis2 jump in;)
A1: Improving/creating a strong #pbis program for Maple. Added upper grade lessons, @flipgrid extension activities, Code w/ Carlin, and made quick access qr guides for Ts. Leadership was brought into the pbis matrix too! #waledchat
A1: I have been doing well at creating relationships with my new Ts. We have been in contact for the past few weeks, and I have been reaching out with positive notes and memes to build those relationships. #waledchat
A1: Iaid a lot of groundwork for a new self paced/student choice type system I want to use next year, and even got to chat with an admin last week about her thoughts and how she saw it playing out for different groups of learners #waledchat
A1 We’ve been working hard to collaborate with stakeholders to improve our emotional support program. We included instructional assistants and we learned so much! #WaledChat#SpecialEducation
A1: I have begun planning tech sessions to continue the great Innovation Conference we ended last year with as well beginning many online PD options!
#waledchat
A1: I inherited a lot of items from the previous teacher and I was to afraid to throw anything out, but this summer I went through everything and I felt like I could breathe again. #waledchat
A1: I have taken a lot of time off this summer from school to read, cook, and spend quality time with family and friends. It was good to spend time recharging. #waledchat
A1: I have focused on creating standards based grading scales and it has helped me plan units for next year. Creating the scales has forced me to create more meaningful assignments. #waledchat
A1: Read a ton, listened to ed podcasts around the house, started participating in twitter chats and started working on mastery grids. Feeling inspired!! #teachbetter#waledchat
A1: When summer school started I changed up the seating in my room got rid of the big high table, now a smaller round one about 10" off the floor, pillows to sit on, Ss are in chagre of their materials. It worked great, I'm excited to have it for the school yr. #waledchat
A1 For the first time ever, I used the end of last year to get ready for this year. I sent everything up to the copy center and planned out the first week. It's a good feeling for a change and was well worth the time. #waledchat
A1: I have been reading a lot of books & getting my inquiry maths stuff together to let Ss take the lead on their own learning! #mathchat#inquirymaths#waledchat
A1 Like @WallerALPHApack, I haven't thought too much about next year until the last week & change. During that time, been laying groundwork for routines where grades will matter less than effective feedback loops documenting growth. #waledchat
A1: After a year out of the classroom, I feel like I’ve finally adjusted to my new working rhythms while still remaining productive. Ready to keep moving forward. #waledchat
A1~feel very prepared to take the daily inspiration & positivity I receive from our awesome in it to win it #PLN & shower our Ss & families with all I’ve got & then some 😊 #waledchat
A1: I purged a lot of "stuff" which helped me feel less stressed, I rearranged my seating for this year to do more flexible seating, and already started my syllabi. Feeling pretty dag gone great! #waledchat
A1: First year in a new position makes it difficult to know for sure, but I think I made the most of my brief summer break to rest & recharge. #waledchat
A1 Weeklong @codeorg training, just planned my first month of earth science, meeting on #steamstudyhall, webex meetings for @mff, some nhl 18 in the downtimes. You know, crushing it. #waledchat
A1: I am really proud of a year plan that I created at the end of last school year when everything was still fresh in my brain. Now to get ready to implement it! #waledchat
#waledchat A1 My first day presentation is #Amazing My students are WOWED! Be the teacher that your students go home and tell their parents about! #AlwaysBelieve
A1: I'm rested and relaxed. I reread #KidsDeserveIt to reignite the fire. I read #SparksinTheDark and did quite a bit of recreational reading. Also participated and collaborated in a boatload of Twitter ed chats #Waledchat
A1: Look into a variety of PD opportunities like professional texts, online PD like #hivesummit, participating in twitter chats, attending district sponsored PD & connecting with educators & discussing what we’ve learned #WaledChat
A1 I have participated in some amazing professional development this summer including #BLC18, #EdCampFlipgrid and #StuVoiceCon18. These have put me in the right frame of mind to begin the new school year. #waledchat
A2: Exciting, invigorating, nervewracking. In the words of @renathunderhawk “Start now! You have to drop kick the doubt.”The planning I do this summer could all bomb or it could go over great. I won’t know till we try it in the fall and gather feedback from Ss and Ts. #waledchat
A2: I feel so much more confident when I have things set and prepared - that goes for ALL aspects of my life! It can get overpowering though, so I have to keep myself in check. #waledchat
A2: It helps me feel more relaxed if I have some things planned for the start of the year. It gives me more time to build early relationships with students. Anyone else feel similar? #waledchat
A2 When I am able to plan things for the next year, I feel far more relaxed & prepared. I am able to enjoy the non-planning times more, because I am not focused on what should be done. #waledchat
A2: i get even more excited to start the year! It’s always hard leaving my loves at home, but I love thinking about the plans I mapped out during the summer. Only got about 1/8 of what I wants though.... #waledchat
A2 Good in theory, even when I *know* the practice will prove to be different when rubber meets proverbial road of reality crowded with learners moving chaotically. #waledchat
A2: I love the feeling of learning as much as possible in summer, dreaming big, and then beginning to put steps in place to get to the greatness!
#waledchat
A2: every year about this time I'm always gripped with the feeling that I've forgotten how to teach, so getting prepped really helps that feeling go away. #waledchat
A2 This last week I’ve been coming in mornings to collaborate with another teacher and it has get great to actually have time to plan. I love the ability to talk about crazy ideas and how we can actually pull them off! #waledchat
A1: I have done well setting up my students for writing this year! I am working on a word wall, personal dictionaries, and Seesaw activities for the writing center. #waledchat
#waledchat A2 From experience... Don't over plan. Things could change. Successful teachers ADAPT and can quickly change their plans to enable the #1 goal. The students. #AlwaysBelieve
A2: It helps me feel more relaxed if I have some things planned for the start of the year. It gives me more time to build early relationships with students. Anyone else feel similar? #waledchat
A2 I love it. Besides getting excited for what is to come, I feel far more relaxed when I get back to work. I know I'm ready to go and can spend the time dotting my i's and catching up with colleagues. #waledchat
A2: It feels great to be able to plan for the upcoming year. I find it helps settle the nerves to know that I have a plan/vision and that my Ss are going to have a great year. Even if the plan gets tossed aside, it feels good to be prepared! #waledchat
That happened to me as well... all the stuff is still in the cupboards. I think you’ve inspired me to look throw it and clean it out. Thank you! #waledchat
A2 I like having a general plan for where I want to go but a lot of what we cover is based on my ELs individual needs. Will know more when I meet them. #waledchat
#waledchat A2 From experience... Don't over plan. Things could change. Successful teachers ADAPT and can quickly change their plans to enable the #1 goal. The students. #AlwaysBelieve
A2: When I'm able to plan and prepare things for the next year I reduce my anxiety and gain peace. I always have to get my ducks in a row before I go back. Though the ducks wander, I'm still somewhat prepared #waledchat
A2: It helps me feel more relaxed if I have some things planned for the start of the year. It gives me more time to build early relationships with students. Anyone else feel similar? #waledchat
A2: It makes me feel grateful that I have a couple months to reflect and read to grow. I can't imagine not having a break in teaching. A lot of people say that teachers have summers off, but it's a vital time for me to learn. #waledchat
And that is so important! If we are going to plan over summer, we have to also recognize that those plans may change as we build relationships with our Ss! #waledchat
A2: Pre-planning makes me feel relieved & organized. Nothing worse than an unorganized Mrs. Waller! Plus, much of what I do takes coordinating w/others & that takes advanced scheduling & planning. #waledchat
A1 I feel like I have prepared for the unique qualities of my elem Ss. Improving my scaffolding and developing a better array of choices to help Ss share their understandings. #waledchat
Exactly! I used to be scared of the projects I would create because I thought they would bomb, but I realized if I want my kids to know that failure is necessary for learning then I need to show them I’m willing to fail and grow too! #waledchat
I say you don't know what is there so just purge! I have moved into to many classrooms where "stuff" was left and I had no need for it. Be proactive and just let it go. Unless it is district material, then make sure to ask first! #waledchat
A2 I love the opportunity I lay out materials and take my time, read stories and play with activities and lessons without the time constraints and pressures of school being in session #waledchat
A2: I love that when things are planned, I can really be present and there for the students because I’m not stressed about the next plan or trying to come up with an awesome way to introduce a topic... when it’s planned in advance it all just flows much more smoothly #waledchat
A3: I wanted to get more videos for my flipped units completed. However, I needed to take a break from school work for a bit this summer so I could recharge for the year. #waledchat
A3: My husband & I didn't get a chance to have a little getaway like we hoped. Our work schedules are polar opposites (he works 4 - midnight w/ M & T off), so we hardly see each other during the school year. Trying to plan a very last minute overnight trip this Monday! #waledchat
A3 Something I wanted to do this summer that I didn’t get around to is remaking some classroom materials I use weekly. I know I will find the time to get it done... & on the bright side, it was more time I got to spend with family because of it. #waledchat
A2: it’s great knowing I have so many more resources since I’ve joined Twitter!! Amazing wealth of info and resources that would not be possible!! #waledchat#bettertogether
A2: Those people who know me, know that I thrive when I can plan things out & have an idea of where I’d like to go (but I know it’s only a roadmap & that detours may need to be taken). I find it helpful & feel more productive when I have a plan to work on #WaledChat
A3: I spent so much time cleaning out my classroom I didn't get to clean out closets in my own home. Professionally, I did not get to read 2 books that I wanted to finish before school. But that’s ok!! #Waledchat
A2 I have been teaching long enough to learn my summer phases. I have moved through the wonder and ideation phases into the production phase. It feels great when a plan comes together because it gives me more time to pick it apart. #waledchat#funisneverdone
#Waledchat is on fire tonight. Check out this from @MrMarshsClass We model failure for our Ss and Ts and they are better for it because they see what will happen next! Shout out to @TaraMartinEDU for recently reminding me of this fact. #ShareMOEdu
Exactly! I used to be scared of the projects I would create because I thought they would bomb, but I realized if I want my kids to know that failure is necessary for learning then I need to show them I’m willing to fail and grow too! #waledchat
A3 I had hopes of getting down the the Holocaust museum in DC, but I'm also moving this summer and it just didn't happen. Hopefully over spring break. #waledchat
A3 I wanted to go visit my daughter but we had too much going on. I also wanted to plan a little more, but did not because I realized that I needed a break. Made a choice to do contract work and it's stretched me thin. So a break was necessary. #waledchat
A3: I wanted to blog, work more on my #GoogleEI project, and get further on my prep... but I took time to enjoy life, family, and friends. No regrets, nothing but positivity as I launch into things!
#waledchat
A2: I'm not really a big planner for the next year. I think about my kiddos and hope they are all coming back. I think of where they were when school ended and some ideas of what to try to get them going again. Yet, it all depends on them. #waledchat
A3: I still have time! I'll be partially back to work Aug 13th, but not really until Aug 29th. (I still probably won't get as much reading done as I want though...) #waledchat
A3: I wanted to plan more... I got the first unit done and I was so excited about it and now with my summer job I have lost my momentum for planning the next units in detail. I’m hoping that having the first few weeks done will give me time then to prep the rest 🙏🏼 #waledchat
I agree, this year was my first summer in a few years that I had time to actually relax and focus myself on reading a lot and getting reflecting on a lot of my practices. Have a lot to try out this year! #waledchat
A3: Professionally, I have so many more PD videos I want to watch from #DitchSummit and I'm already falling behind on #HiveSummit
Personally, I haven't relaxed or read nearly as much as I told myself I would.
#waledchat
A3: There is still time (in Ontario we aren’t back until Sep. 4), but I haven’t been out in my kayak yet this summer! I’ve got to get out on beautiful #GeorgianBay before school gets back in! To focused on house renovations! #waledchat
A3: I really wanted to blog about my whole summer, but instead I couldn’t break myself away from chatting. I also started to work out a ton and well, something’s gotta give... #waledchat
A3: I can’t say there was much I didn’t do. I got to put a lot into my personal life, first summer I’ve taken “off” for a few weeks. I have attended trainings for my professional life. And it’s been a good work-life balance! #waledchat
#waledchat A3 I wanted to update my website https://t.co/QpZgmKLgQL to have more material about my book "The Story of Always Believe" coming out this fall. Two weeks of summer school teachinga and a 2 week vacation thwarted my plans.
A3. Professionally missed #FlipgridLive & #Flipgrid edcamp 😢😭😔. Personally wanted to get my running on but knee is messed up so have to do PT & frequently visit dr. BUT... could be worse;) #waledchat
A3: Personally-staining my deck did not happen. But if I need help I think I am going to recruit my 4 and 6 year old. I found them with the window cracked open and climbing out on covered deck to get their favorite stick down that got stuck up there! #waledchat
A3: I wanted to paint the interior of my house and get out to hike at least once a week. The only painting was the basement making a mini appartment for my 19 yr old. I think I did 3 hikes. But I did get a trip to California! #waledchat
A3: I wanted to attend a Get Your Teach On Conference, but failed to plan it. Personally I wanted to repaint the exterior of my house, but the Southern heat and summer thunderstorms prevented it #waledchat
A3: Spend more time at Disney?? We were there for 3 weeks straight. But my daughter now works for Disney...so apparently we never get enough time there #iteachmath#disneyteacher#waledchat
A3 We have accomplished a lot as a family. Still holding out hope for the multi-day hike. Professionally, I am late in writing @nathan_stevens and it is my loss. I need to get on it. #waledchat
A4: As far as the trip goes, hopefully we can snag a hotel room! With work, I hope to get a handle on organizing my classroom, since I'll be working in a unique space that I'll only have for one year. #waledchat
A4: I am hoping to finish all my videos for the American Revolution before summer ends. I think having that completed will be big for me as I pursue flipped learning for the first time. #waledchat
A4 To complete some unfinished work before the year starts, I will make a prioritized list of what needs finished & tackle it one item at a time. Love the feeling of crossing things off a list. Anyone else go back & write something you already did just cross it off?
#waledchat
A3. Personally, every year our family holds a golf tournament in our of my cousin, who was a Sgt. Marine killed in Afghanistan. To raise money for college scholarships to donate to Ss and to veterans who are injured. We couldn't make it down to MD this year! #waledchat
A3: This summer I was able to do exactly what I was hoping....relax w/ my family. It is always my #1 priority after busy & dedicated school years! #waledchat
A4 With a month left, this isn't dire, but I would like to get my bio sept. plans done as well. I have my keynote Monday and then thats my next thing. #waledchat
A4: um, get off Twitter... 😂😂😂 I also thought about waking up early and going to the gym instead of going at night. That would free up a lot of time and get me ready for the beginning of the school year! #waledchat
A4 I teamed up with another teacher to come in the next couple weeks to get stuff done in the morning. Having another person with me is super helpful to actually be motivated to be working in the summer! #waledchat
A1 I feel like I am ready to jump in with technology. I have planned out several lessons using @Seesaw and I am working on creating activities to push out now. #waledchat
A4: I started back to work just before losing my grandfather and have jumped back in after his celebration of life. Running full speed ahead to get as much done as possible!
#waledchat
A4: I need to make sure I prioritize things that I say I am going to do. If this is what needs to be done then it needs to be moved up the list. Focus on what matters! #startnow#waledchat
A4: I’m a very last-minute kind of person and we still have over 2 weeks until I go back and 3 until students come back. I’m hopeful that as I start to mentally settle in for the year, I’ll find the planning energy that I had earlier in the summer! #waledchat
A4: We are back into full gear this week. Leadership meetings have begun, staff PD begins Monday, and students return on the 20th. I just want to spend as much time with my family as possible. #waledchat
A3: I wanted to read MORE professional texts BUT summer is not over yet so I’m not giving up. I still have time left so I’m going to keep reading. #WaledChat#SoManyBooksSoLittleTime
A4: The last of my "honey-do list" is being completed tomorrow. So now I will take some time each night (an hour at most) to sit and do some planning for the school year. I just went to a great PD (#517Summit) and picked up some new tools for the toolbox. #waledchat
A4: Well my kids began school yesterday and we had a great day!!! I still have the PD books that I have not read yet and I definitely will finish them. #Waledchat
Stinks when the summer is redefined. I was off this week but found a way to spend 4 full days there and tons of time not sleeping trying to improve our school. It was a productive week though so that’s good. #Waledchat
#waledchat A4 My mom will be having major back surgery next week. I will be in the hospital room with her for THREE DAYS! Opportune time to work on my website. #Adapt and overcome to get things done. Prayers for my mom, please. Surgery is in 2 Mondays.
A2 I know that I can only set a framework. All the real planning will happen when I have my kids. I try to read PD books and take some face to face as well as online PD during the summer to improve my teaching #waledchat
A4: The last of my "honey-do list" is being completed tomorrow. So now I will take some time each night (an hour at most) to sit and do some planning for the school year. I just went to a great PD (#517Summit) and picked up some new tools for the toolbox. #waledchat
A4: I need to make time to read and not get distracted by other things that I would like to do as well. I set a goal and need to make sure that I’m doing everything that I can to work towards meeting that goal. #Waledchat
A5 I'm planning to wrap up summer (down to the single-digit days) by not dreading the countdown. I refuse to worry about how many days or hours remain. The work week is just a pause on summer. It continues every weekend! #waledchat
A5: Tomorrow is Pinterest Day for @LBStrunk and I. We take 1 summer day where everything we eat comes from a Pinterest Recipe. We still have a couple shows to catch up on and some friends to spend time with as well! :) #waledchat
A5: Lots of time outside with my boys, practicing our tee-ball skills, swimming, taking trips to the zoo, getting my #runlap miles in, snuggling my new twin nieces, and celebrating my 30th birthday tomorrow! #waledchat
I can stop listening to the offensive explosion the #RedSox are giving the Yankees and get to work....or I can continue to enjoy this moment. #waledchat#RedSoxNation
A4: No time due to 3 day trip, meeting Mon. & official start Wed. Hey, there is always weekends and evenings; I can paint and hike then. Plus it is finally getting a bit more seasonable here temp wise. It was a really hot summer. #waledchat
A4: Trying to be more aware of the time I spend on my iPhone. I’ve been putting it down and picking up a book or creating a video or resource instead. I find I have loads of “extra” time when the device is away! #waledchat
A5: Relaxing and getting in the last of my me time for the summer. Couple more camping trips hopefully, although both are scheduled after the Ss return. #waledchat
A5 I am taking a day trip to Lancaster and planning to go into Philly for a day to hit Independence Hall and the Constitution Center. Some more pool time would be nice if the sun decides to stop hibernating and make an appearance. #waledchat
A4~ some more garden time, trips to @ArnoldArboretum & continue time with my family including this special ma/Nana & our weekly trips to @DollarTree & of course, yummies #waledchat
I don’t know what happened. Like, yesterday I had 2 weeks left. Then, today, I feel like I’m down to just hours! There’s a weird time warp between July and August. 😳 #waledchat
A4: What’s up #waledchat! Jon from Irvine coming in late. I have a Google Keep list going for whenever I am inspired. So satisfying to “check those boxes!”
A5: Hang a gate on the fence I built, go hit some golf balls, and spend some time with family. After this week, I'll need to start my focus on school after next week. #waledchat
A5: Tomorrow is my last weekday off because I return on Monday I'll make the most of the time with my family and hit those books Monday morning #Waledchat
A4 I have curriculum to write for the district and plans to create for the VDOE, so I need to set up a specific time to complete the work that I need to do and stop making excuses like summer break Lol. #waledchat
A5: @MrPStrunk and I went to the market this evening to prepare for Pinterest day tomorrow! It's a summer tradition for us to make breakfast, lunch, and dinner with new recipes from Pinterest! #waledchat
A5: I hope to spend the last bit of summer relaxing, reading, creating, and getting energized for the upcoming year! Also getting in that kayak! #waledchat
A5: I’m taking a short trip out to California to visit a friend who won’t be coming back to the east coast this year as she had planned... if she can’t come here, we decided we’d bring the east coast to her! 💕 #waledchat
#waledchat A5 Most schools in TX start in 4 more Mondays. Next week I will set up my room, then my mom has surgery and I will be with her until the 1st day of teachers. My 29th year is upcoming and my book will come out. It is going to be a great year! #AlwaysBelieve
A5: Got a bunch of collabs planned with my teams! Gonna spend about 2 hours a day in my classroom to chop away at my list. Spend the rest of the days with my family and catching a wave or two. #waledchat
A5: Getting ready to go on a much needed family vacation, looking forward to spending quality time together before we return to the busy life that school can bring. #WaledChat
Thank you all for coming! Very excited to have @moler3031 moderate his first chat as he runs the show in #waledchat next Thursday! Hope to see you there!
