Hi! I'm Christina - one of the math consultants/coaches @HamiltonCoESC down here in Cincinnati and current president @ohioctm
I LOVE that @MUCTM_ is facilitating tonight! :) #octmchat
A1: anything from @gfletchy is golden in the elementary math world. Great 3 act lessons, progression videos, subitizin resources and online learning classes. Check him out! #octmchat
A1: @Desmos teacher resources are excellent. What started as a great online graphing calculator (which is now being used for AIR testing) has developed into a great resource back for students to "play with math" #octmchat
A1: @YouCubedOrg is a fantastic site for activities and research. Robert Kaplinsky is great to follow. He shares lessons and blogs and DOK information. #octmchat
A1: New found resource that I love for supporting Genius Hour is "Mystery Doug." @youcubed is another great one! Also- PD I've taken through @Connect2TLC#octmchat
A2: I like to have students do a card sort of questions. They naturally will tell you what they feel comfortable with and what they may be unsure about. I don’t even need them to solve the probs, just sort #octmchat
A1: I also love @joboaler & @YouCubedOrg The WIM activities are a great way to kick of the school year - and then revisit the problems throughout the year to see how understanding has changed. #octmchat
Q2: Much of formative assessment in my classroom is me conferring with students- it happens often and the info I gain from it is invaluable- their words say what a worksheet can't show! #octmchat
A2: I’ve been trying to use assessments that give me and my Ss immediate feedback. @quizizz is great, and @Desmos has new features that allow the whole class to see Ss responses #octmchat
A2: I take anectdotal notes while they are playing games (and all day long) and it gives me a glimpse of their learning. I'm a lover of anectdotal notes! #octmchat.
I have been using @Flipgrid as a formative assessment tool--students create videos to explain their thinking, model a strategy, respond to a prompt, etc. and then other students can learn from each other and I can use it formatively #OCTMchat
A2 Students share their mathematical thinking under the document camera, I sit and chat with groups while they are working with the math toolbox and I take a lot of anecdotal notes. #OCTMchat
A2: I also use @seesaw and have the children video their whiteboard drawing because I can see the order of their thinking and then they record their thinking verbally to explain what they did. #octmchat
A2: Google forms. Love how my mathletes and I can communicate through the private comments, and @polleverywhere is an easy to implement tool to gauge understanding. #octmchat
A2: I've used @Classkick for formative assessment as well as quizzes on @CanvasLMS. @GetKahoot is another good one. When you have immediate results, you can talk about possible misconceptions while the questions is still in Ss minds. #octmchat
A2: I have problems of the day on @CanvasLMS (not always every day) that students answer using any method. They can type, take a picture of their paper, or record a video of themself explaining their strategy. They love havig choice. #OCTMchat
A2: @flipgrid, number talks, Google classroom assignments where they can comment, and I still like the "parking lot" with post it's..I just have them initial so I know who needs more intervention #octmchat
A2: I also try to keep a "running record" when observing students work. Then I can see patterns and trends in students' strategies or attempts. #octmchat
I'm in a 1:1 district so I have seen teachers create learning menus that allow for choice in the classroom that frees up time for these individual student conferences #octmchat
A2: I also use @seesaw and have the children video their whiteboard drawing because I can see the order of their thinking and then they record their thinking verbally to explain what they did. #octmchat
5 Practices for Orchestrating Discussions a way to tell a mathematical story using Ss work and collecting student understanding #COCTM meeting tonight! #octmchat
A3: take advantage of learning together with a colleague whether that is reading a book or article together, attending a conference together or challenging each other to try something in your class. Keep the focus on your own personal learning #octmchat
A3: I let them in and let them see me as a work in progress. I talk to them about things that I'm really wrestling with rather than things I think I have a handle on. #octmchat
A2: Doing a lot of demo Number Talks using Cube Conversations and Fraction Splats from @SteveWyborney which give a lot of insight into Ss understandings. Also oral counting with elem Ss charting on a number line as we go. Pair-Shares, small groups #octmchat
A2: This former high school teacher (now instructional coach) is learning so much by observing students... what are some of the ways you document that so you don't forget what you learned and the next steps to take? #octmchat
A3: Invite other colleagues to come watch you teach, and ask for feedback. They’ll often times let you watch them teach, and this can lead to great opportunities to share and collaborate. #octmchat
A3: Build moral amongst colleagues simply by asking them things other than "school talk" Get to truly know those you work with... who knows, they may be going through something VERY similar to you! #octmchat
A3: Get to know them as people outside of the classroom; ask questions about things you see them doing in the classroom; offer opportunities for collaboration #OCTMchat
A3: Play off your colleagues strengths, don't complete with them, everyone can learn from everyone else in some way. Ask for help, don't be afraid of failures and celebrate the successes along the way! #octmchat
A3: Invite other colleagues to come watch you teach, and ask for feedback. They’ll often times let you watch them teach, and this can lead to great opportunities to share and collaborate. #octmchat
A4: Balance is hard to learn. I have rules about when I put it down and stop working. Pick specific days to work late. Remember there is always something to do and prioritize #octmchat
A4: whatever your system is set up parameters that protect you as a person. A teacher can not be their best for students if they are burnt out. So protect yourself and know when to just put it down. #octmchat
A4 I am terrible at this! Advice please! Often limited after school time at work due to family dictates, but also out of energy at end of day and need a recharge which means taking things home #octmchat
A4: A big part of planning assignments is looking at what you can realistically grade in a reasonable time. It’s important to find ways to give feedback with your time in mind. Time savers like gradecam can be lifesavers! #octmchat
A4: also I remind myself not to spend time on the the small "cuteness" of things. I don't think children remember the little bear in the corner of your paper teaching them something. Ask yourself "what is the student payoff?" when working on things #octmchat
A3: Beging buildingyour PLN immediately. Take advantage of learning opportunities that your district may provide. Get involved in professional organizations. Be willing to take advice and friendly critism. You don’t know everything b/c you have a degree. Be FLEXIBLE! #octmchat
A3: Be yourself! I was so nervous when I first started. But, when I started to be my loud, goofy self I built relationships and realized I had a lot in common with other teachers #octmchat
A4: Smile, listen, inquire about something your interested in you see them do, and gently share. It takes time sometimes, don't get discouraged. #octmchat
A4 I prefer to come in early and stay late instead of take work home. Sundays have some take home work, but I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken a big bag of stuff home and it’s never made it out of the car. 🤷🏻♀️ #octmchat
If it is on the computer, I would rather be on my couch watching TV. I usually go in early twice a week to do the at school stuff. It's really personal preference #octmchat
A4: This differs for everyone, but I’ve found that I’m much more productive when I stay after school. If I try to work from home, I get distracted by the tv and refrigerator... #octmchat
