Hi all! Welcome to #AppleEDUChat tonight - @ccrannell and I are so excited to chat ‘coaching’ and how to create a culture of coaching in your schools/districts!
#AppleEDUchat take a second to introduce yourself and share what bucket you fall into - 1. “I am a coach" 2. “I work with coaches" 3. "I want to be a coach!" Or 4. “I just think coaches are the best"
Hi everyone, I am cindy crannell, I was a tech integration specialist and digital leader for the last ten years abroad. Now I am STEM teacher in river Forest #D90Learns#AppleEduChat
I am Jordan - iDirector In @BerwynSouth100 - I am a former instructional coach and current Director of Innovation who leads the iCoaching team and also supports the coaching program in our district #AppleEDUchat
Q1: How do you build relationships with your peers? Whether you are a coach, teacher leader, admin, etc.? - We know relationships are key! Share your successes of building these relationships #AppleEduChat
Good evening, everyone! Michelle here, an instructional tech coach from Orland Park, IL. Last week was snow, now we prepare for ice storms. #AppleEDUchat
Currently our hallways have weekly meetings on our early release days. I also like to chat with my teammates and other colleagues during our lunch time to find out what we have in common. #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUchat take a second to introduce yourself and share what bucket you fall into - 1. “I am a coach" 2. “I work with coaches" 3. "I want to be a coach!" Or 4. “I just think coaches are the best"
A1: Build Relationships by listening more and talking less. As a coach I try to support where I can - fixing devices, making copies at the beginning. #AppleEDUChat
A1: Start every PLC or training session with a getting to know you activity such as Three H’s- share a hero, highlight and hardship of your life. @JonGordon11#AppleEDUchat
Hello friends! Jeremy from Lakeport Elmentary School in Lakeport, CA. I teach 3rd grade. I am an unofficial tech coach for all things apple and I think coaches are awesome!!!!#AppleEDUchat
I think I fall into buckets 1, 2, and 3. I have had the opportunity to be part of the administrative group that is supporting coaches this year. I also work with staff and coach them. #AppleEDUChat
A1: Vulnerability- your ability to be open and most importantly authentic in any conversation. That’s where true relationships form. Relationships are everything. #AppleEduChat
Q1: How do you build relationships with your peers? Whether you are a coach, teacher leader, admin, etc.? - We know relationships are key! Share your successes of building these relationships #AppleEduChat
A1: You build relationships with peers through respect. You have to work at their level of understanding and realize that just because you "get it" doesn't mean everyone else does. #appleeduchat
Hi everyone. I am Mike. I teach engineering and App Dev in the Dallas area. I have was previously an Instructional Coach on campus. Our three coaches @CoppellHigh are awesome. #appleeduchat
A1: part of building relationships is just being present and listening. I try to connect with teachers in the halls, lunchrooms and at after school events...when time allows. #AppleEDUchat
Hi everyone - Marc Drumm, Senior Instructional Designer at West Chester University near Philadelphia, and proud resident of bucket number 4. #AppleEDUchat
A1 The daily friendly check-in is a good way to get started. Our staff members collaborate and coach each other constantly. We are open to learning from peers #AppleEDUChat
A1: I started in a new building this year, so its like starting over. Getting to know people, not just in the school setting but hobbies and interest. It's almost like being in sales... except you are selling a pedagogy. #AppleEDUchat
A1: I have the best luck connecting with teachers before school and in the hallways! Just like students, if you can find out what they are interested in, then teachers know you care! #AppleEDUchat
A1: I think its about being approachable and always having a smile on your face. Letting people know that you are always ready and willing to lend a hand. #AppleEDUchat
A1: I don’t believe I am going to say this...I am a rabble rouser. I sorta disrupt, because disruption is innovation. I apologize after the fact. I find that when people are apprehensive to change, it is sometimes difficult to build. #AppleEDUChat
A1: Taking the time to listen to what others have to say, while trying to be nonjudgmental is key! Conversations are two-way. #BetterConversations#AppleEDUchat
A1. Listening is such an important part of building a relationship. It's hard to build a relationship if everyone is talking at the same time. #AppleEDUchat
Q1: How do you build relationships with your peers? Whether you are a coach, teacher leader, admin, etc.? - We know relationships are key! Share your successes of building these relationships #AppleEduChat
A1:Our district places a priority on building relationships with staff and students alike. Our admin tell their stories either via a keynote or movie to share. Staff can volunteer to tell theirs and this is how our meetings start #YourStoryMatters#AppleEDUchat
Intro: Hi everyone! John Albert Principal of @iInspire_CA and I work with coaches and think they are the best. #AppleEDUchat # Appledistinguishedschools @AppleEDU
#AppleEDUchat take a second to introduce yourself and share what bucket you fall into - 1. “I am a coach" 2. “I work with coaches" 3. "I want to be a coach!" Or 4. “I just think coaches are the best"
That is so true! This year is my first year as a coach and I need to build those relationships across our entire district. It's hard work, but it's definitely worth it! #AppleEDUChat
A1: I don’t believe I am going to say this...I am a rabble rouser. I sorta disrupt, because disruption is innovation. I find that when people are apprehensive to change, you must take a risk to show what is possible. Relationships are the byproduct of change. #AppleEDUChat
Q2: What types of coaching cycles/models do you use/want to use? Why and how are these used? Explain. Ex: Cog. Coaching, @jimknight99 Elena Aguilar, etc. #AppleEDUchat
Meeting people where they are and moving forward from there helps to build trust. Everyone starts somewhere and moves at a pace that is comfortable for them. Moving is the key #AppleEDUchat
A1: Take time to get to know each other. Share your stories. Find out what you have in common. Also, participate in challenges together and create - could be a book, presentation, course, etc... #AppleEduChat
Q1: How do you build relationships with your peers? Whether you are a coach, teacher leader, admin, etc.? - We know relationships are key! Share your successes of building these relationships #AppleEduChat
A1: I read an article last year that explained the concept of “idly schmoozing” and someone told me that’s what I do. Speak to people you work with as people, not just a colleague. #AppleEDUChat
Q1: Fika - the Swedish culture - has been a great way for us to build culture - taken from the Joy of Professional Learning Books made by ADEs! #AppleEDUChat
A1: Just like we teach the whole child, we coach and collaborate with the whole teacher. Lunch time together and chats in the hallway are as important as truly listening during instructional conversations & learning from Ts expertise #AppleEDUchat
A1 I find having informal, one-on-one conversations to be the most effective. Group settings tend to change people for a variety of reasons: nerves, oneupmanship, pressure to conform, etc. #AppleEDUchat
A1: Education is about 50% Relationships and 50% Relationships! Sharing common purpose/vision, spending time to listen to the needs of your team and be a servant leader. #AppleEDUchat#AppleDistinguishedSchools@AppleEDU
A1: Putting in the time and effort to build relationships is worth it in the end. I've been in the same schools for a few years. I am maintaining many relationships now. Still building relationships with new teachers. #appleeduchat
A2: Our district uses cognitive coaching as well as some Elena Aguilar. We recently came up with this graphic as a coaching team that sums up our cycle. #AppleEDUChat
A2: Lucky enough to work in @BerwynSouth100 where we collaboratively developed a cycle and model that works for us-- constantly refining and defining what that looks like for all coaches in the district. #AppleEDUChat
Q2: What types of coaching cycles/models do you use/want to use? Why and how are these used? Explain. Ex: Cog. Coaching, @jimknight99 Elena Aguilar, etc. #AppleEDUchat
A1: build relationships through listening and “hearing” what teachers need and being that therapy! I have a couple chairs in my office that seemed tk have been coined “therapy chairs”. Just having a relaxing and positive environment #AppleEDUChat
Building trust, listening to needs, & bringing some examples that are instantly adaptable and ready to use is important when people are apprehensive #AppleEDUchat
Q1: How do you build relationships with your peers? Whether you are a coach, teacher leader, admin, etc.? - We know relationships are key! Share your successes of building these relationships #AppleEduChat
A2: I'm suppose to meet on a weekly or regular bases with all staff. Some meet with me and some don't. I record our meetings on a Numbers Sheet that Jordan shared with me. I slowly work on meeting with the other teachers, but it takes time. #AppleEDUchat
A1: real-time coaching. I just made that up. It means when you are in a smaller school, making yourself available when teachers ask or need, rather than waiting until a certain time. Challenge? ADD tends to thrive. #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUchat Here is a little graphic I created recently to demonstrate our process. The part that is essential for me is the “Land and Reflect” I learn a lot about my teachers in this process!
A2: my team and I have been piloting a student centered coaching model. Although, it’s been a struggle with time and our amount of buildings. My favorite part is being able to complete a unit with a class and co-teaching. #AppleEDUchat
Our site loves whisper coaching when our coach is in classrooms. They also leave us encouraging notes and attend our plannings to coach us through things we’ve done in our rooms as a team. We also get to go see our peers teach upon request, with whisper coaching. #AppleEDUchat
A2: I love modeling behaviors and inviting people to share ideas. Flipped videos are an excellent way to share ideas. I love, however, to take advantage of and visit schools other than my own, and arrange for an exchange of methods across districts. #AppleEDUChat
A2: Making sure you schedule up your next meeting, determining what needs to be done by the coach and coachee prior to the next meeting, and keeping data/reflecting on each step of the process. #AppleEDUchat
A1: Listen and observe. There is so much to learn around you. Everyone has special talents. I appreciate learning from my colleagues everyday. #AppleEDUchat
A2 I'm not a coach, I don't know what the models are called, but my literacy coach worked with us 3 weeks on. I liked that amount of time- I got ideas, applied them, & reflected #AppleEDUChat
A2: I like group coaching on a voluntary basis...pull the people in that want to learn & when they discover something amazing or cool they in turn spread the word to others - hopefully sparking a ripple effect on something awesome for kids (or Ts)! #AppleEDUChat
A2: I feel so fortunate to have been coached by @SweeneyDiane! Focusing on what we want students to be able to do/create and looking at student work is so powerful in making instructional shifts but also maintaining a non-evaluative relationship with teachers #AppleEDUchat
A1: with the limits of time & being a specialist, I use collaboration on the go - use those few minutes at drop off and pick up to share tips. I also invite teachers for the last 5 of a class to highlight a new tip I’ve taught Ss that Ts can use too! #AppleEDUChat
Q1: How do you build relationships with your peers? Whether you are a coach, teacher leader, admin, etc.? - We know relationships are key! Share your successes of building these relationships #AppleEduChat
A2: We model our coaching cycles around Diane Sweeney's book Student-Centered Coaching. We use a "results-based coaching tool and have a 4-6 week cycle. #AppleEDUChat
This year has been extremely helpful. All of our coaches districtwide meet monthly to collaborate with one another and even go through some scenarios together. It's good to know that you're doing things right and people are in the same boat as you. #AppleEDUChat
Our directors and coordinators did research of cycles from Knight, Aguilar, Sweeney, and Kise -- synthesized and compiled what fit for us and what wouldn't work to format our cycle. Again, it's a constant revision and allows us to be in a state of reflection #AppleEDUChat
Q2: We do monthly coaching cycles. Half the staff one month and the other half the next month (staff of 24 teachers). After a full day of PD I follow up with 1:1 reflections with cognitive coaching. Then lead into an “I do”, “we do”, “ you do” non-evaluative. #AppleEDUChat
When our teachers complete 40 hours of professional learning, they receive a class set of iPads and a coach for 8 weeks. During this time they continue to develop technology and pedagogical skills to teach in their new 1:1 blended learning classrooms! #appleEDUchat
I don’t know any coaching models. I just hangout in the staff room and provided 1 to 1 and 1 to small group training on using our apple products (Apple TV, iPads, MacBook Airs, AirPlay, AirDrop, Classroom) in the classroom. It’s complete informal #AppleEDUchat
Q2: What types of coaching cycles/models do you use/want to use? Why and how are these used? Explain. Ex: Cog. Coaching, @jimknight99 Elena Aguilar, etc. #AppleEDUchat
A1 I'm new to my position this yr and learning the best ways to build relationships. So far, being positive and helping in any way I can has built trust and opened Ts doors for me #AppleEDUchat
A2: coaching to me is really just partnering with teachers, admin, and students to be more, to grow, to be what's next, to help, to figure it out.... #AppleEDUchat
sharing and remixing from each other - how perfect - that's exactly what we hoped tonight could be to since we can't visit each other's schools! #AppleEDUchat
A2: my go-to books/people are anything @brightmorningtm and @ShaneSafir ❤️❤️❤️
Not only do they speak to coaching, but they also value equity, empowering teachers, cultural responsiveness, and social justice. #AppleEDUChat
Q2: What types of coaching cycles/models do you use/want to use? Why and how are these used? Explain. Ex: Cog. Coaching, @jimknight99 Elena Aguilar, etc. #AppleEDUchat
A2 I’ll admit, coaching models are not my area of expertise, and I had no idea there were so many! I need to take some time to sift through all of this. #AppleEDUchat
A2: Pull out training focused on teaching strategies not tech and here is a tech tools to support it, provide pull out reflections, demos in the class linked to the training (I Do, You Do, We Do), repeat. Coaching is non eval. School goals/evals parallel cycles🚣🏻♂️🚣🏻♂️🚣♀️#AppleEDUchat
I'd suggest a lot of listening too. I got a lot more accomplished when I took time to listen and really understand where Ts were coming from & where they want to go. #AppleEDUchat
#AppleEDUChat We use a Team Drive to share thoughts and ideas @KressTech4 She also found youcanbookme which has been a nice tool. I am hoping to try video recording soon!
A3: Using Numbers for coaching logs have been helpful in keeping track of everything! Everything is all in one place...notes, documentation, pictures, examples, everything!!! #AppleEDUChat
A3: Do you know what I have been using? I have been using the screen record feature in iOS and Clips to create flipped videos. Easy How to Videos. #AppleEDUChat
A3: I use a numbers document that we created as a coaching team. Place for the goal of the coaching cycle, meeting dates/what occurred, follow-up steps, and a place to keep artifacts. Easier to remember what you have accomplished in a year when you document it #AppleEDUChat
Q3: even if you aren't a coach - how do you document digitally? it all helps to as we keep track of relationship building and Long term projects #AppleEDUchat
A3: Taking notes from the incredible @cbmacchick (hopefully that's the right handle) -my favorite tool is Numbers- without a doubt. Each coach in our district hosts their coaching log in Numbers and great for turning logs into forms for quick reflection by the coach #AppleEDUchat
A3: Our coach leaves notes behind, or puts hand written notes into our files in her office. Our district level coaches send us emails with what went well and things to try.
Can’t read the buttons on a Japanese toilet? Our guides from around the world will take you to their favorite cities and introduce many interesting stories. A great resource to spark students’ curiosity! https://t.co/uRlkdZOKzC@AppleEdu#ADE2019#AppleEDUChat
A3: We start with a shared document to house learning targets & instructional plans. After co-teaching, we analyze student work and take notes in the same document to notice trends over time #AppleEDUchat
A3: Here is a document that our coaching teams created with the help of Apple Professional Learning Specialists - it tracks our coaching cycles for us to personally reflect on -https://t.co/BQH4BxbHuh#AppleEDUchat
A4: love anything where I can hand write my notes. Love, love my Apple Pencil... so using it in a Numbers file or Notes, my coaching notes are written😊😊 (and color coded!) #AppleEDUChat
A3: i don’t feel like I have a strong h digital tool to use when reflecting and coaching with teachers. I have tried a couple things but I have not landed on something that works well to track their progress. #AppleEDUChat
Great way to state that. Everything in that statement screams 'Team' to me. Makes more sense as a coach to have a team around you. Make sure our teams are all using the same vision/goal. #AppleEDUchat
A3: In training, Ts make a Pages book to reflect, document, and grow. For the coaching cycles, we use a collaborative doc to keep track of goals, notes, celebrations, and resources. We add images and videos there too! Easy to access! #AppleEDUchat
A3: I personally have been using pages but I may switch to numbers. Occasionally I will do this old school thing called "Paper & Pencil" but that is only in a pinch. #AppleEDUChat
I use Numbers to track my individual interactions with teachers! The other coaches in my district and I also collaborate on a Numbers file to make sure we aren't overloading or missing any teachers! #AppleEDUchat
I capture images and videos using the Camera app and then put them together using my favorite app Clips! I use the features of the app to annotate and point out observations, notes, ideas, and questions. #AppleEduChat
Q3: even if you aren't a coach - how do you document digitally? it all helps to as we keep track of relationship building and Long term projects #AppleEDUchat
A3: Here is a sample of what the file looks like - feel free to copy your own and REMIX - Numbers has definitely helped us reflect - audio recording, drawing, text, and shapes #AppleEDUchat
A3: Here is a document that our coaching teams created with the help of Apple Professional Learning Specialists - it tracks our coaching cycles for us to personally reflect on -https://t.co/BQH4BxbHuh#AppleEDUchat
A3: Documentation- Coaching is non-eval so I ask my coach not to share it with me(trust!). For goals/evals teachers can keep digital portfolios to upload artifacts of success. Goals for coach & eval mirror each other 🚣🏻♂️🚣🏻♂️🚣♀️ Celebrate artifacts in the goals meetings. #AppleEDUchat
A3:Shared GoogleDocs are something my school has used.During my 1st coaching session on @Seesaw Ts had the chance to reflect/document their training experience w/an activity they submitted using tools their Ss will! This snapshot was GREAT feedback for me from them! #AppleEDUChat
I mostly use a Google doc shared with the person to keep track of what we talked about, what they're working on, resources, & next steps. Makes it easy for me to prep for next coaching visit, follow-up on resources, & create a reference for them #AppleEDUchat
OTJ! - Throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim! Lol! Right @Mr_JGonzalez & @MissGonzales_ Seriously - just like Ts w/ a new iPad. Start small & build. #AppleEDUchat
In reply to
@annfeldmann1, @Mr_JGonzalez, @Mr_JGonzalez, @MissGonzales_
A3: Here is a document that our coaching teams created with the help of Apple Professional Learning Specialists - it tracks our coaching cycles for us to personally reflect on -https://t.co/BQH4BxbHuh#AppleEDUchat
A3: We use collaborative documentation of our to-dos work within #Numbers However, since we have so many buildings and tech mentors, we use Team Drive and Google Docs/Sheets etc for larger collaborative measures. #AppleEDUchat
A2: As a first year having and being an edtech coach in our district I’m still figuring out the best ways to coach every school. This year is mostly about building relationships by having teachers book me.. @YCBM_APP You can book me=great site! 1:1, model, coteach #AppleEDUchat
A3: Loved attending @ChiCoachCenter summer intensive where we recorded ourselves multiple times in different scenarios to reflect on our practice - so helpful! #AppleEDUchat
A3: Here is a sample of what the file looks like - feel free to copy your own and REMIX - Numbers has definitely helped us reflect - audio recording, drawing, text, and shapes #AppleEDUchat
A3 After the Apple Pencil came out, I started using Penultimate to document meetings. I like their built-in page backgrounds (graph paper, to-do-lists, etc.). https://t.co/qyrx0eZXHm#AppleEDUchat
Thanks to inspiration from @rperry209 we're using a 360 camera during pre-service teacher observations in internship; our students can see their own actions during the lesson but also students' reactions w/ the 360 #AppleEDUchat
A3: @goswivl is a coaching tool must! Self reflection then. Shared discussion and focused conversation is critical to self improvement and enhanced practice. #AppleEDUchat
A3 Another great tool is the Swivl for capturing video. I videoed my teaching then sat with coach and we analyzed. #AppleEDUChathttps://t.co/TXNuh6SMXF
A2: Modeling is so important, but so is support. We all need a soft place to fall when we are learning something new. It is ok that we don't get it the first time. #AppleEDUchat
A3: I use a mentor log on numbers. Add a checkbox after the next steps column and if I’m able to accomplish those next planning steps I check it off. #AppleEDUchat
A4: Today, my coach came in to watch one class period i’m struggling with. She gave me some feedback during the lesson and it worked. She also gave me one thing to work on with them. Tried it with my next class period and things went much better. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I think that any time you learn something from a coaching candidate/cycle to improve your practice, whether that cycle went good or bad, then I'd define it as a success. This requires constant reminders to yourself asking always-- what can I take away from this? #AppleEDUChat
Yes, students fill out a reflection document, we give written feedback, then we discuss. It gives students time to think about how things went before we chat #AppleEDUchat
We had one of the original Swivl's. Really need to get another one of those. I've even explored 360 video so the T can see any part of the classroom at any time. #AppleEDUchat
A4 working with a struggling kinder teacher. By coteaching, modeling and asking reflective questions she has been able to start connecting some dots on her own. So important to just nudge them but let them process in order to grow #AppleEDUchat
A4: @MiaLMorrison and @JennyGrabiec when I became an ADE. They reminded me how I got there and pushed me to dream big. Life changing to this day. 😘 #appleeduchat
A4: I feel like I’m being coached on a daily basis, there is so much to learn. The SCC units I have completed I’ve really enjoyed seeing the growth from everyone involved. It’s always so interesting to see the student data at the end. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I have nothing to add here, but I am so inspired that there are so many committed, talented, and knowledgeable coaches out there. You guys rock! #AppleEDUchat
A4: I once coached a somewhat reluctant T. It was all about meeting them where they were and building them up. Their reluctance was from not knowing. It was successful bc when I was done with the cycle the T still reaches out and shares the great things they do. #AppleEDUChat
I've only used it a couple of times, but so far, so good! We just started at the end of last semester. My hope is to also use the 360 camera to record "case study" lessons to share w/ our Ss to analyze teaching strategies and tech integration #AppleEDUchat
A3: Here is a sample of what the file looks like - feel free to copy your own and REMIX - Numbers has definitely helped us reflect - audio recording, drawing, text, and shapes #AppleEDUchat
A4: (1 of 2) We have new ELA materials so I have supported a lot of our teachers with planning and teaching the lessons. Co-teaching has been beneficial for both teacher and coach. We reflect together on the lessons, pacing, student growth, etc. #appleEDUchat
A4: @MiaLMorrison and @JennyGrabiec when I became an ADE. They reminded me how I got there and pushed me to dream big. Life changing to this day. 😘 #appleeduchat
A3: We use so many different tools, depending on the what people are comfortable with. One tool that I use a lot is a shared Google Doc, or even a shared Google Keep. A great place to store images, video, audio and text all together! #AppleEDUchat
A4 My coach gave suggestions to motivate students to write. Motivating middle school students can be difficult, but her efforts helped tremendously #AppleEDUChat
A4: What I like is when I hear from a teacher a few weeks after coaching and listening to other things they have tried, because the coaching helped give them a foundation. Its a nice feeling.
#AppleEDUchat
A4: (2 of 2) While co-teaching, both of us have learned different strategies and management ideas from each other. The continuous collaboration and reflection has been great. #AppleEDUchat
Q4: I measure success as anytime I see a T that I showed how to do something with their iPad or Apple TV actually doing it in the classroom. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I remember a teacher that kept the plastic on her computer 24/7 so it wouldn't get dirty. So as it sat and sat, I finally was able to demonstrate to her how she could access student data. After that, she was onboard for everything. #appleEDUchat
A4: Currently learning a lot about teaching in a fully online environment from fellow faculty. It's a whole different ball game, and I have so much room to grow! #AppleEDUchat
That's the key. It's not what I want you to do as the coach, it's what you need and where you need your Ss to go. Then we start on the same page. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I know it’s been a successful coaching cycle when I see it in action without my presence. When the teacher really runs with the concept and is excited to see the learning their students are getting from them implementation #AppleEDUChat
A4: #AppleEDUChat Recently I was invited into the classroom of an expert veteranT. We both learned along side each other. It was a coaching moment I will remember @KomenskyLions for year.
A4: When teaching high school ELA the most successful co-teaching experiences started by inviting Ts into my classroom to learn w/ us when we tried something new. This often led to the T returning the invitation because they wanted to explore the tech w/ support #AppleEDUchat
A4: When I was a new teacher years ago, I was coached. It was such a joy to work with my coach on cooperative learning and I welcomed her expertise. The kids and I both learned and grew so much because of her mentorship/coaching! #AppleEDUchat
A2: #AppleEDUchat We have been using Student Centered Coaching along with Random Acts of Coaching. I am starting an online Elena Aguilar course (The Art of Building Trusting Coaching Relationships)
A4 I haven't coached, but as a reading T, I was able to model & reflect with peers. I learned that working 1:1 with Ts is great and should happen more. We can learn a lot from each other. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I think that any helping a teacher make their next step is a successful moment. Finding where they are at and moving them forward. Challenging them enough, celebrating any success...no matter how "small" they may seem. #AppleEDUchat
A4 I used to be reluctant to do conference presentations, but a former colleague offered to walk me through the process and co-present with me. We presented together four times over three months, and now I do them regularly. #AppleEDUchat
I love it when teachers get a couple students involved in the coaching session too so that they know they have some in-class tech helpers ready to help them & other students #AppleEDUchat
A4: W watched a video and reflected on the behaviors and sentence stems to see how a coach and coachee interact - powerful to watch and discuss #AppleEDUchathttps://t.co/NKwPSLNnTF
A4: I feel like the majority of the time I end up learning more than the person I am coaching! I love coaching the teacher that "Doesn't have time for that" and then seeing their realization of what they have been missing and it wasn't actually hard... #AppleEDUChat
A4: I like to model language, questioning, and reflecting. When working with teachers, I identify strengths and comment on things they do well. For me, working collaboratively and planning together is definitely beneficial for all, especially our students. #AppleEDUchat
A4: I learned that “you don’t know what you don’t know”, and most people, when they know better, do better. I learned not to be afraid of hurting feelings w/suggestions, but to be gracious and provide constructive feedback in a way that makes everyone find success #AppleEDUchat
A4: I'm constantly being coached by my incredible instructional/tech team @MrsKrissyPierce@jepcke@MrsSmithThinks. When I feel valued and have open collaborative conversations, I learn the most! I need to continue to do this with the teachers I coach and work with #AppleEDUchat
Yes, I teach mostly face-to-face, but I have one fully online course this semester; it's such a different experience, and I'm noticing places where I need to build in extra content and support because we don't have that face time. Figuring it out one day at a time! #AppleEDUchat
A5: I once coached a T through using FlipGrid. The day I went into coach, nothing on the platform wanted to work. I would tell myself to double check the platform before going in, and to never give up. Kids are resourceful! #AppleEDUchat
A5: One of the first times I had a coach (when I was teaching), she came in rambling about some lady named Carol Dweck and Growth Mindsight. We thought she was crazy. Looking back, what she said was genius, she just gave us no frame of reference or reasoning. #AppleEDUchat
A5: I've had many coaching failures. One of the biggest ones I learned from was - you have to meet Ts where they are & you can't move them faster than they are ready. #AppleEDUchat
A5: My most epic fail was when I was just starting to demo using AirPlay from the iPad to the AppleTV and the Network went down. I ended up using the whiteboard to draw pictures of what happens LOL 🤦🏻♂️ #AppleEDUchat
A5: I’m a very direct person, so if a coach hinted at something I probably missed it... love the quote from @BreneBrown “clear is kind” because that is how I appreciate information. ❤️ #AppleEDUchat
A5. I was working with a teacher in a new content area. I moved too quickly and made too many assumptions. It wasn't a collaborative team environment. Needless to say, I learned a lot from that. #AppleEDUchat
A4: The BEST mentor I ever had always told me "Children attend to what you attend to." To me, that means, focus on the positive ALL the time, and you will get positive results. Mrs. Ellis, you are forever my mentor! #AppleEDUchat
A5: We have been using coaching dilemmas and partnering coaches to role play and learn from coaching conversations - here is a @jimknight99 adated list from a workshop that we added to Keynote /a creation aspect to it! #AppleEDUchathttps://t.co/iV0yBcVAAn
A4: At the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year I had never held an iPad. @ckklynen placed one in my hands and told me to move toward the fear. I haven't stopped moving. The inspiration she shared has been life changing. #AppleEduChat
A5 I was coached once and I was talked at. My thoughts and concerns were second string. Being on the other side of that is tough. It has taught me that listening is key! #AppleEDUChat
A5: working with a teacher on gradual release of responsibility and failed to ask good reflective questions and ended up pouring more in than pulling reflection out. Got compliance but not commitment! #AppleEDUchat
A5: shoutout to @leahod for giving me the best WORST mock coaching meeting. Modeling is the best practice and I feel like if I can handle your fake crying and shouting, I can handle anything. #AppleEDUChat
It's tough to estimate what they need ahead of time. Discussion boards are my best friend. I encourage my Ss to use it to ask questions. Don't hesitate. #AppleEDUchat
Coaching always unlocks new and awesome ideas. You typically have some sort of problem or dream that you want/need to accomplish and you get to collaborate and guide to a solution. I don't always have the answers... but we can create an answer together #AppleEDUChat
Q5: I was teaching a intro do Word class at a community college. I moved very quickly, and student was lost looking for the "right click" button... he was a factory worker who lost his job and was going back to school... he had never used a computer before. #AppleEDUchat
A5 Coaching for me (the coachee) failed once because my goal was not well defined. My coach worked in lower elementary and I worked in upper. Better conversation and explanation was needed pre-coaching. Fortunately I still learned from the experience #AppleEDUchat
I've been there! Last semester, our network seemed to drop out on me every week during the same class, right in the middle of a demo! Great opportunity to model monitoring and adjusting! :) #AppleEDUchat
Is the Apple Distinguished Educator site down for anyone else? I'm trying to submit my application and upload video but it keeps looping back to the welcome screen and asking me to log in again 😱😱😱 @AppleSupport#appleeduchat
Yes! It is like Challenge Based Learning for teachers! The more you unlock, the more it leads you to new places, more questions, research, learning, ideas, and implementation! So fun! #appleEDUchat
Imposing time constraints is so real! My former leader once told me that I can control my stress by controlling my self imposed timelines - #mindblown#AppleEDUchat
A5: I have to remind myself that what worked for me in the classroom, may not work for the person I am coaching. New teachers need to explore what works for them. Being open minded and none judgmental. Being prepared is key. That can be messy.#AppleEDUchat
I agree; I've also been using @Flipgrid for discussion in addition to discussion boards. I think there's more connection when everyone can see one another. It's so easy to feel disconnected in an online course #AppleEDUchat
A5: there are often times when you receive feedback, but it may have been given out of frustration from many other weights on their shoulders. It’s hard because initial response is taking it personally, but working to stay focused on the positives to grow #AppleEDUchat
A5: people who are coaches have fantastic impact in many ways. But in my experience that is their default leadership style that they always go to. Some people don’t want to be coached and just want an answer. It’s important to read those moments and stay flexible. #AppleEDUchat
I set reminders in my calendar to follow up even just via email with teachers to continue to build the relationship. I also try to schedule our next collab session before I leave a classroom or collab. session. Building routines with teachers can be helpful. #AppleEDUchat
A5: coaching fails happen if I’m not well prepared. And as a coach we must be willing to adjust for all ability levels. Having a wide range of tools/strategies to pull from instantly #AppleEDUchat
A6: A coach knows they’re successful when they see their Ts using what they learned in their classes when no one is looking. The sharing part is easy, staff shoutouts, taking peers to see each others successes are all great ways. #AppleEDUchat
A6: One sign of success is when your teachers are doing great activities, and they are not asking for your help as much... Its great they are growing... but also feel odd when they don't need you as much. #AppleEDUchat
A6: Team work makes the dream work! Coaches and teachers are successful when a goal is met! When goals are met, it is important to relish the accomplishment before setting the next goal! #AppleEDUchat
A5: Not meeting teachers where they are at is my #CoachingFail. My frustration in those moments isn't with the teacher, it's with myself for the way I approached the conversation. I make sure to touch base with the teacher to clear the air and try a different angle #AppleEDUchat
A6: a coach knows they're successful when they see that their coaching candidates have shared/taught their new skills to their colleagues. #spreadyourinfluence#icoachbsd100#AppleEDUchat
A6 As a coach, I have felt successful when the colleagues I work with feel successful, when they feel empowered to do what is best for kids, or when I see students succeed because of the collaboration we had. It's inspiring to see. #AppleEDUchat
A5: This was a fail and a success...I was just learning Writer's Workshop, and my "coach" told me I did everything wrong. I shut down. When I reflected on it, I could see why kids shut down, too. I became determined to ensure my kids opened up!! #AppleEDUchat
It is easy - but always so important to remember - a leader once told me 'reward what you want more of' and that has always stuck with me! #AppleEDUchat
A6: A sign of success is when Ts begin independently trying new things and seeking out new resources. I think a big part of coaching is encouraging an innovative spirit in our Ts when it comes to planning & teaching #AppleEDUChat
First time I coached a teacher after starting cognitve coaching training, I was focused more on figuring out what the next "phrase" was to use rather than on listening to what the teacher really needed. Was confusing for teacher when I kept asking questions #AppleEDUchat
As the conversation rages on, big shout out to @jg_jgarrett@ccrannell for leading discussion on “Creating a coaching culture” It is so important to inspire & connect #AppleEDUchat
A5 I’ve learned that, while some people will show up to be coached, they may only be there because they’re required to and will end up ignoring everyone’s advice. I’d advise my future self to recognize these people and not waste too much time on them. #AppleEDUchat
A6: a coach is successful with teachers when a teacher is commended for what they are doing from others and they say I couldn’t have done it without my coach. Shows you are an integral part of their learning and teaching #AppleEDUChat
Thank you so much for coming to learn, share, and remix resources from each other - we hope that you enjoyed being here and hope that you can use these connections and convos for your future coaching experiences #AppleEDUchat 🤓🤓
A4: #AppleEDUchat My favorite is when the Ts share how they applied previous lessons & ideas to new content. For example, after a modeled coding lesson, the Ts had the Ss code the American Revolution.
A5: I failed when I was afraid to give truthful and constructive feedback because I thought I would hurt feelings. People want to be better - I always have to remember that #AppleEDUChat
When teachers share what they are doing with others, you know that you're on the right track to building their confidence & meeting their needs #AppleEDUchat
A6: This is the hardest Q for me to answer - I think it's about seeing the love of learning come back to life in Ss and Ts. Especially when you're working with a reluctant teacher, and you see that spark in their eye and the excitement in their voice- that's a win. #AppleEDUChat
Thank you so much @jg_jgarrett & @ccrannell for a dynamic #AppleEDUchat tonight. I have been so far behind - such a wealth of information & resources!! Definitely looking forward to re-reading!!!
A6: I love when teachers tell success stories of lessons they replicated or altered from ones we co-taught. Having students greet me in the hallway because we have spent weeks together on a unit warms my ❤️ too. I love that we all enjoy collaborating together. #AppleEDUchat
Q6: When a coaching client takes on new, positive habits or behaviors. It can be subtle and hard to track... but, as a coach, you know it when you see it. It’s a client doing new, high leverage moves you knew they *could* do & now you see it! #AppleEDUchat
Thank you so much for coming to learn, share, and remix resources from each other - we hope that you enjoyed being here and hope that you can use these connections and convos for your future coaching experiences #AppleEDUchat 🤓🤓
Thanks for a great chat @jg_jgarrett & @ccrannell The conversation was great and I have so many resources to explore and new people to connect with! You guys did a GREAT job! #AppleEDUchat
A6: a coach knows they are successful when student learning increases because of change in instructional practice of a teacher they worked with #AppleEDUchat
I started noticing that teachers were adding resources that they were finding to our shared doc & they weren't waiting for me to show up with "the answers" at our next meeting - they were finding their own answers #AppleEDUchat
Thank you so much for coming to learn, share, and remix resources from each other - we hope that you enjoyed being here and hope that you can use these connections and convos for your future coaching experiences #AppleEDUchat 🤓🤓
Great chat tonight, as always! I'm so excited to put some of these ideas into practice in the coming weeks! Thanks @jg_jgarrett and @ccrannell!
#AppleEDUchat
A6 When you see a T at least trying things you've been working on together. 🙌 I like to give Ts shoutouts at staff meetings or Twitter. Sharing their successes is so important! It encourages them and motivates them to try even more new things. #AppleEDUchat
A6: when teachers and students find success from techniques and feedback shared by coaches and collaboration abounds within the school. Everyone helping each other and pushing each other to be better shows the coach what they’re doing is making an impact #AppleEDUChat
A6: Success comes in so many forms! When students demonstrate understanding of the learning targets and we have work samples to prove it, and when teachers feel confident taking the reins with a new instructional strategy or facilitating new tech tool use #AppleEDUchat
A5: #Coachfail was when we started our cycles and shotgunned the training (Something different for everyone) resulted in shallow integration. When we all pull the oars together our 🚣🏻♂️ goes a lot faster #AppleEDUChat
A4 There were a few times that @TeachMichaelCz coached me to help define my role as a Literacy Coordinator, and to reflect on where I was heading, even when I didn't believe in myself. It was so very helpful. Thanks, Mike. #appleeduchat
A6: Success can be measure when we work together to do what’s best for kids. Sharing common language, strategies that work for student success. Teaching/lesson planning is intentional, relevant and learning is active and engaging. #AppleEDUchat
A6: When we have done our job correctly, we have given teachers the tools and skills they need that allow them to be successful, and they begin to rely more on their abilities than us to guide them. Teach a man to fish! #AppleEDUchat
I just love #AppleEDUchat chats because I feel like I’m chatting with the most famous educators in the world!! @BrianWTimm@shmaynor are gonna rock it!!
