Sir John Jones advocates student involvement in staff selection - how would that fly?
I believe a PLN is a group of people which makes each other better. "The room is smarter" and a social media PLN is one huge room!
Today:As a Personal Learning Network Advocate what do you tell your colleagues abt the specifics of how personalized learning works?
Helen here. Participating in chat on lunch break.
For me is timely.Like Ss, Ts can't lrn until they are ready. Timing is everything. https://t.co/B0yFbBrnxN

Yo I love this! Planning an urban farming unit for 7th graders. Could use your help!
To convince someone of the benefits of a PLN, they first need to buy into collaboration as a primary method of learning.

Right on Matt... how do PLNs play out in you school? Classroom?
A1. personalized learning encompasses: "need to knows", "nice to knows" and "desire to knows"
Only 8% of students complete college- & career-ready curriculum. Even fewer master it: https://t.co/iM8kkivXE7 (via )
Our PLN is certainly smarter because Matt... is in the 'room'...
To me, PL is about creating a learning environment, pedagogy, and experiences to best meet the Ss learning styles and interests.
Well, Sarah...that's a lot to know...
A personalized learning network allows people with different roles, experiences & locations to learn from one another.
NOW in progress Topic: As a PLN advocate what do you tell your colleagues about the specifics of how personalized learning works?
Personalized learning: Meeting the needs of individual student's needs via pedagogy, curriculum, and learning environments…
how does it apply to online environments?

Hey Sarah... have you met Matt ???
Yes, as said, "The room is smarter." Together we grow, but PLNs need buy in. https://t.co/GS8ROIyoCm
To convince someone of the benefits of a PLN, they first need to buy into collaboration as a primary method of learning.
Field of education struggles with its language. Example: personalized learning, or personalization… just sayin.
We are slowly getting all Ts on board with leveling their walls and sharing best practices and successes! https://t.co/vsy2UsUeeE
Right on Matt... how do PLNs play out in you school? Classroom?
Doesn't everything in education?
so so what's to know about personalized learning????
I would start by asking my PLN what they know and what questions they have about PL as a starting place. Build collective knowledge.
Sarah, my website has the same name as your Twitter handle! Great minds think alike!
Personalized learning intends to address the learning needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural backgrounds of individual students.
Learning, sharing, & growing as educators w/focus on engaging & reaching all learners https://t.co/OGx2kgmN0V
A personalized learning network allows people with different roles, experiences & locations to learn from one another.
The first step toward realizing PLN Power is admitting you can't do it alone...
There's more to a PLN than just taking. It requires providing info as well.Never assume everyone already knows what you do.They don't
Some people feel that they can do anything w/o help.
Right on Howard... and what would you look for in an answer?
Hi Debra... have you met WE'RE GETTING OUR PLN ON at
The power of authentic audiences! 9-year-old reporter breaks crime news, posts videos, fires back at critics https://t.co/6R41iZcNK8
Are we focusing our thinking on S or T? How are we learning about S interest and styles?
What is working for others I haven't tried?
Step 1- admit you have more learning to do Step 2- admit you are in need of change
Sounds more like T than S. We need to learn as much as S sometimes.
We've seen great PLNs, & we've seen ppl be discouraged by them. A big difference maker seems to be a clear, goal all agree on.
I love the fact my PLN is global. So much to learn and share with educational leaders globally
"music becomes this vehicle for experiencing & envisioning themselves with lives filled with possibility." https://t.co/68K7VX9crd
Important insight... My take? All of the above...
Very cool Nic... are you connected with
you guys have some really cool ideas ride on
PLN's R collaborative efforts: Educators support, share, brainstorm & challenge each other as they strive to improve their practice.
Many focus on criticizing the use of social media for collaboration for PLN's while losing sight of the successes of PLN's for Edus
Step minus-1: Listen to Debra...
The bigger the wave the more powerful the ride.
Access to a collective brain-trust & creating/sharing a bounty of resources in a PLN make it a great place to follow your curiosity
The benefits of personalized learning are obvious. Is it possible to do at widespread scale? How? What? Help me here…
yes! And I think beyond educators and ALL learners, too.
We just need to teach empathy. More women in creative/tech fields! https://t.co/yIGqKtl6a2
Because we've evolved to 'win', but we're now at a point when we need to share. We're just not up to it.
Personalized learning addresses needs, interests, aspirations, or cultural backgrounds of individual student…what about teacher?
Peace out PLN, looking forward to learning more from u in near future! Thx for shepherding us through!
. I credit social media for my & much of the learning I do!
People tend to criticize what they don't understand. Social media can be intimidating. https://t.co/PExAlHTbTu
Many focus on criticizing the use of social media for collaboration for PLN's while losing sight of the successes of PLN's for Edus
So important to have platform for Ss to self- assess their learning in personalized learning. They track what matters.
Personalized learning…is a lot of work, many moving parts…how to do all this and everything else?
PLN does same thing for T. We need to grow as much as our S.
Why would any educator settle for limiting their collaboration with their building when the world is opened to them through a PLN?
Aren't teachers (and administrators) also learners? Why would this be different?
At any time and place! https://t.co/3cNcCHfuYg
Access to a collective brain-trust & creating/sharing a bounty of resources in a PLN make it a great place to follow your curiosity
Love this! spend a lot of time getting our teachers accounts for PLN
Very true! Still getting used to Twitter.
PLN means teachers sharing and learning with open minds. We tch our stdnts to do this, so we should too!
Indeed, important... how are you establishing/providing such a platform?
Great question! Who has an answer?
Yes Matt! https://t.co/tZsTawMfq1
A PLN is a two-way conversation between a giant virtual room of educators who all want to improve. Curate resrouces and reshare!
Agree? In a personalized learning model where students are at the center, THE ROLE OF TEACHER MUST BE ELEVATED, EMPOWERED, ENABLED
It's hard to imagine why... scared, not a risk-taker? https://t.co/rQH2VAfK0L
Why would any educator settle for limiting their collaboration with their building when the world is opened to them through a PLN?

Teach Ss to make formative self-assessment a tool they use very day. Formative feedback IS learning.
How to do that when Admin frowns upon it?
What are methods you use to help your Ss & their parents see the value in ?
Most attention of personalized learning is given to instructional approaches…to succeed, what else must be attended to?
A what point do efforts at personalized learning become counter productive?
Sorry to & dash off to class! Looking 4ward 2 lrning wu
If personalized learning is about needs, interests, aspirations, or cultures of students…then how to determine each?
Respect is a huge issue and lack thereof sometimes in today's schools.
so Tom... What is your answer to your question?
Some do this out of fear of the unknown. We need to help others, those in control of SM in schools esp., "see" the value.
Districts need to focus on personalized PD for T’s. Just as our students are not all the same, either are T’s!
vice versa, ignore engaging their building with what they learn through a world wide PLN...
Always err on what's best for Ss. If that doesn't hold up in your school, you're in the wrong place.
How about in Post Sec.? How does a PLN fit or does it?
Those who understand must be the messengers!
Choice sells. At 1st choices reflect poor self analysis. Practice & safety improve results. Emphasize empowerment.
Ah, the age old tested & true excuses- fear, time, failure to launch & fear
wow this was awesome good thing to keep in mind for student teaching https://t.co/CxBvvFySWY
Have you seen our new video? Share it with the grumpy instructors you know who are still grading midterms by hand. https://t.co/GxOR227wcW
Looks like we are modeling that right now. A learner is a learner is a learner.
Tough job being the messenger some times...
If you believe that edus have a moral obligation to share than why limit sharing to face to face encounters Tech provides scaling.
We must "show" admin value-I asked my Superintendent 2 follow me on twitter so he could "see" it in action! https://t.co/j99E5H50iO
How to do that when Admin frowns upon it?
intentional strategies to develop relationships, build a culture of care in schools and classes
Believe in the message and arrows don't sting as much
Yes-It's called the "Bleeding" edge. Some pain but oh so worth it!
YES, intentional strategies... ._riina examples please?
When the Paris Peace Accords were signed in 1973, economic problems lingered and nearly 3 million Vietnamese civilians died
Being on the bleeding edge is what I say-LOL!
I do what I do now because I couldn't keep doing what I was doing.
. Many things create apathy in educators, Lack of respect, appreciation, leadership, recognition, but not tenure alone.
Life is fuller, on the edge...let's meet there!
Something as simple as asking students how they liked to be recognized is a start.
, we want our students to think and learn globally. It makes perfect sense to extend that idea to our educators.
PERSONALIZED LEARNING requires lots of planning preparation, follow-through, and so on. Where to get the time?
Yes Howard! It's brought me new found energy & passion for !
Start there, then grow... love it!
class circles, Ss led circles, peer support/mentoring
So many people are afraid of change; it is scary for some to realize the educational revolution is upon us https://t.co/pxRbbGXX8n
Why would any educator settle for limiting their collaboration with their building when the world is opened to them through a PLN?
When did we convince ourselves that learning requires a textbook? Learning had been occurring for thousands of years prior to books.
IMO, if you intentionally focus on building positive relationships at start of yr the rest will follow. https://t.co/chZGj2yJJe
Respect is a huge issue and lack thereof sometimes in today's schools.
make relationship building part of who you are as a class / school, schedule the time!
You think people are meant to be so restless? Or are we in an unnatural environment that makes us this way? https://t.co/lw13deteVn
I do what I do now because I couldn't keep doing what I was doing.
I would love to teach accounting w/o book!
That is the way educators have been programed to think through the decades.
And is bleeding on the edge w/ the rest of us!! Welcome Howard!! https://t.co/zE2R22ifrs
Howard, wear the arrows as a badge of honor...
When did we convince ourselves that learning requires a textbook? Learning occurred for 1000s of years prior to the advent of books.
PLN's provide transparency in education as well. Myths are exposed and new ideas are vetted. Status Quo is always being challenged.
agreed but we need to always ask ourselves, how am I doing this is it working, ask Ss to what they need
Don't say you're on the "cutting edge" unless you can show the wounds. https://t.co/vk7XDmo21i
Yes-It's called the "Bleeding" edge. Some pain but oh so worth it!
So how do we change this? IMO it takes disruptive educators like those you find here. a little https://t.co/Vq8Ex5nBUq
I think is has to do with mindset - many teachers view their job in one dimension: my classroom, my lesson, start at 7 end at 3.
You are so wrong about this, but it is a discussion for another bottle of wine.
Often overlooked in personalized learning —> academic-support strategies. How to insure these occur?
Love it Jeremy! My scars abound but each & every one was worth it!
I totallyagree https://t.co/SP0qJciRfN
When did we convince ourselves that learning requires a textbook? Learning occurred for 1000s of years prior to the advent of books.
I've never actually that about that phrase in such a way. Very true! https://t.co/IfQ0gE9kAB
Don't say you're on the "cutting edge" unless you can show the wounds. https://t.co/vk7XDmo21i
Yes-It's called the "Bleeding" edge. Some pain but oh so worth it!
personalized engagement. Some families want to be more involved.
Agreed James! S's need to be our focus. I have quarterly conferences w/ my S's to ask 4 feedback &how they think I'm doing.
Some don't want or have the time? What then?
good advice, thanks. Differs for everyone.
In the factory model of schooling a textbook is a procedure manual to ensure workers on the line apply the same parts.
I teach 12 wk classes. Ask many times as to what can b done better/change.
agreed, keeps the lines open both ways, Ss see you are willing to be vulnerable, listen to critique
that's a larger (and important!) question. This was a response about personalization.
It keeps me humble asking for S feedback....
Agreed. Learning by doing rather than by memorization is where true learning lies. https://t.co/4C591fjw8a
When did we convince ourselves that learning requires a textbook? Learning occurred for 1000s of years prior to the advent of books.
I thrive on their feedback and what I can do different.
I agree with S as the focus- using a google form 4 feedback & discussion with S. Always looking to grow
I think it's good modeling for them too!
Celebrating freedom to read bestiality in schools. MT : Great news! Gov Vetoes ‘Beloved Bill’

makes for a culture of growth and care, mutual respect and responsibility can occur
Personalized learning; yes, it's complicated ->
Teach the Ss and parents you have, not the ones you want. Keep pushing then get there.
Any tenured teacher may be removed from their job if due process is followed. Blaming tenure is often an excuse not to.
good point, brilliant insight... ._riina we can do this!
Tom, los colegas no saben distinguir aun entre y
Helps to keep it "real" Love my S's -they teach me new things every day!
You're right, it's a discussion for another bottle of wine (whine?) but would be a great topic for a future
Yes they are very different things.
keep the door open ,our Ss can lead parents to your "door"
What lessons have Americans grasped from the war in Vietnam? Thoughts?
RT : Next time a child comes at with you question after question ... consider it a gift. For they chose you!
