#espechat Hi my name is Hollyn Watkins and I will be joining the chat tonight. I am a sophomore at UGA and I am currently enrolled in an EDIT2000 class. I am excited to hear about Cross Curricular Integration.
A1 connecting learning in #physed to what the S are learning in the CR- SOLs common core, portrait of a graduate whatever your school calls it- #ESPEchat
#espechat A1: For my class I am focusing my genius hour project on how 6th grade Physical Education class can improve students ability to collaborate. I believe that #physed is extremely important when It comes to classroom connections and helps build students relationships
A1 making connections to the CR through #physed activities. Such as teaching cultural dances for heritage day. Doing calculation with the mile run etc. #physed#espechat
A1) In PE teachers need to integrate other subjects throughout lessons and activities. For instance, we used math today while playing parachute K-2. Also, gathering resources for teachers to teach physical activity throughout their lessons. #espechat
A1 we are given the ELA, Math, science and SS curriculum standards and outcomes and we plan w the CR Ts on how best we as a faculty can help Ss meet the standards for each subject. #ESPEchat
A2 Having ss read your what why how, providing articles for them to analyze, reading food labels etc these will help with ELA as will ss talking about the subject or the focus, presenting to the group #espechat#physed
A1) Phys Ed is much more than playing games. I teach collaboration, teamwork, responsibility, etc through physical activity. Add Health and other contents we are busy year-round #espechat
A2: sight words, fluency, rhyming, vocab, inferences, 2 many. Activities can include reading a sight word, b4/after a task, creating a rhyming word, creating words from a set of letters collected- game we call scramble), ....#espechat
A big hello to @rich_wiles & #ESPEchat 👋🏼!! This is Stephanie Sandino from Southern California, I’m a ms #physed teacher (grades 7/8). Sorry, tuning in late here!
A2 I have dry erase boards at each learning station with directions for Ss to read. They must read with intention and be able to ask questions and answer questions about the text. This is huge for our Ss rn. #ESPEchat

Q3. Physical Education is a science. What are some concepts and skills that link to Next Generation Science standards? Can you share some examples. #espechat

A1 Classroom connections are those bridges you build to make learning in #physed and across the board a little more seamless, to make the WHY that much stronger. It even makes our subject matter more relevant for ss who may have a hard time sipping the #physed juice #ESPEchat
A2 I use language and words they know and words they may need to sound out. Following through is where they fall short sometimes. But the process is ongoing and they are beginning to comprehend. #ESPEchat
#espechat I do believe that taking a brain break and being involved with #physed improves all students classroom connections and collaborative skills no matter what age. It is important to take the time to clear your head. What better way than getting out and exercising!
Do you feel it can be hard sometimes linking with classroom educators do to the pace of the classroom instruction compared to our frequency of instruction. #espechat
A2 I’ve been talking with an instructional coach on my campus about using @Newsela to help ss with their lexile scores. So essentially I would use it as an anticipatory set or perhaps bringing up a health topic, attached with a thinking map #ESPEchat
A3.b: But I link science to just about every lesson: laws of motion, simple machines (lever bat: fulcrum/power vs control) force, trajectory. Ss ask if i am teaching science or pE #espechat
A3 Our science teacher has reached out to our #physed department with a heart rate lesson. We have steps that ss use to enter and exit school. He uses these for his lesson by having ss go up and down the steps along with calculating their HR, max HR, target zone, etc. #ESPEchat
Q4. Physical Education links to character education and social emotional learning? What are some of your favorite character ed and SEL lessons? #ESPEchat
A3. I connect with the Science Standards with activities that link to force. speed and environmental standards. #espechat We have so many standards that parallel.
A3 I work closely w the STEM T and we link lots of science standards together. She’s growing and harvesting and we are discussing food groups and healthy choices. #ESPEchat
I did a cool PBL project with the students Garden to Lunch room idea. The students loved weeding and mulch the plants. #espechat Now only if we did have rain everyday for the summer.
A4a We have Second Step lessons at our school, we are doing our 3rd out of 12 tomorrow. Just last week I mixed it up and added a movement piece (along with the PPT they ask us to use). Did the human knot with negotiating and compromising along with action steps #ESPEchat
I did with my K-6 when I had pedometers! I want to start again! Right now, @KateCoxPE has this really cool idea about having her ss take pictures of themselves during the pacer and using them to attach to a certain number of the RPE scale #ESPEchat
#espechat Do you believe that some of these helpful science standards could potentially improve a students ability to collaborate with other students in the classroom as they learn about and discuss the topics that were brought up in Physical Education class?
Q4. I don't necessarily do specific lessons on character and sel as much as I incorporate it into the lesson as extensions. After everyone is able to understand what to do we "level up" to improve the activity by adding sel strategies #espechat
I really like that idea. I was teaching SJR today and my ipads did an update and lost all the memory due to a county push of apps. Epic fail. I will be using that idea. #espechat
A4b Used @MsTuckerRocksPE lesson called build-a-gym to teach social awareness. It’s a tag game where the taggers are negative impacts and ss are trying to retrieve word cards to put up on their build-a-gym wall #ESPEchat

A5 My go to resources to give classroom teachers are always the following (moreso, for K-6): @CoachPirillo movement videos (especially like his stability ball drumming ones, I tell the ts to use desks), @GoNoodle , @CosmicKidsYoga & @DANCEPL3Y YouTube videos #ESPEchat
A5. @OPENPhysEd Active Classroom and Early Childhood. I like Hopple ideas and Noodle books. Most activities can be modified for small spaces. #espechat
A6 Talking with CR teachers to see what areas ss are struggling and see if you can adapt to your lesson. One yr ss did not get angles we worked on them in PE and the struggle was over. Learn by human building. #espechat
A6: our games are all linked to a SOL. So Evaporation is a throwing game based on the water cycle, VA REGions is "thunder, lightning, fire but with VA Regions, Line tag is electricity or blood tag depending on what I'm reinforcing (circuits or circulatory system) #espechat
A6 I’ve linked historical facts w my passport 🏏 lesson where ss travel from country to country not only learning about cricket skills but also cricket facts (I’m sure I need to work on extending these facts to something a little more rich, but it’s a work in progress) #ESPEchat
A6.b Using content language: perimeter, area, line, intersection =easy way 2 make connections. we estimate a lot, & skip count in exercises, count by 3s / 4s to learn mult. facts when planking. We have even counted by the presidents-Although we usually stop Monroe. (5) #espechat
Our students do required drown proofing in our county in 5th grade. I would like to see students paddling more frequently and fishing too. We need to teach regional activities for our students to build the connections. #espechat
@rich_wiles#espechat I like the idea of Incorporating water activities into Physical education class. I taught water sports at a summer camp for five years and noticed that my campers were always much more enjoyable and focused once they had their break on the water.
A7: be they are ALL of our Kids we are all responsible for them and their success. any thing we can do to connect S to the knowledge and understanding they need to be successful in school and in life is something we should be supporting! #espechat
A7 Honestly, I think it helps bring everything full circle, for lack of better words ⭕️, there is an aspect of all subjects very much alive in #physed#ESPEchat
Thanks! Rich for moderating and everyone for a great well paced chat! Have a super Wednesday everybody (picture day is Thursday for me and it will probably be raining!) send me some love! #espechat
I have done Yoga in the main hallway just to make sure everybody understands the importance of physed and never to let the physed class in the hallway again. #espechat
