Q1: Relationships are more important than ever for students in today’s schools. What strategies do you use that help students accept you into their “circle of trust?”
#makeitreal
Always a pleasure to join you all, especially after successfully doing our first ever student voice panel with middle schoolers at our faculty meeting (part of my masters project). #MakeItReal
Q1: Relationships are more important than ever for students in today’s schools. What strategies do you use that help students accept you into their “circle of trust?”
#makeitreal
A1: Circle of trust - one EASY strategy is knowing the first name of EVERY student! Call them by it, use their name often, and have a 1:1 discussion! #MakeItReal
Q1: Relationships are more important than ever for students in today’s schools. What strategies do you use that help students accept you into their “circle of trust?”
#makeitreal
A1 Before I started studying I was a TA in a special ed school. To me its listening to each and every student. Let them know their voice matters and take time to get to know them
#makeitreal
A1:At the start of the year I have students fill out notecards with info about themselves. If my infectious charm and wit don't build a relationship (Ha!) then I go to the notecard and see what I topic I can have a real conversation with them about! I care about them! #makeitreal
A1: I have 8th graders, so it's a tricky balance of friendly and firm. I make sure they know I'm there for them for their "real life stuff," not just to teach them science. #MakeitReal
A1- I’m visible, I’m crazy and often in a tutu, a cape, a crown. I get to lunches, recesses, arrival, dismissal, and I talk to them, remembertheir names and families all 750 of them. My mobile desk was a game changer! #MakeItReal
A1: When building relationships with students I follow there principles: be open, be available and give every student the benefit of the doubt. They need to know you respect them before they respect you #makeitreal
A1 My Littles know about my life. I have a bookshelf in the room that is covered in “me” artifacts. The extra room on the shelf is for theirs! They know me well! #MakeItReal
A1: Gotta put relationships first. Listen to them & incorporate their interests into lessons. When something happens where they think they're going to be "in trouble," ask them how can you help them. #MakeItReal
A1) I find ways to connect with them outside of school. Go to their games or hang out with them on Minecraft. I love playing Minecraft with me. It’s the perfect opportunity for them to teach me. #MakeItReal
1)Be real. Kids know how to spot a fake. I fully support #embraceyourweird & using it to foster relationships with https://t.co/hmhp7cSgqk: In the fall, we helped at PokemonGo raids in town & I saw some Ss & fams. They're already asking if I'll be helping again soon! #MakeItReal
#MakeItReal A1. I never fake that I am perfect and the I know everything. Kids appreciate when we show our real sides. I also bring things that I love into the classroom showing them who I am. Cooking, NKOTB, or kid books.
A1: I guess I should have mentioned that I am at a school of over 360 Ss. I know each name (no matter how it is to pronounce some of them). :) #MakeItReal
A1: throughout the year I ask Ss to share their interests. When they realize that you care about their outside school life they let you in #MakeItReal#IHMarchmadness
A1: I show continuous concern for my Ss. I send them emails when they are sick, give them high fives in the halls, and reassure them when they are stressed out. #MakeItReal
A1: I let them see me for who I am. As Principal they need to see that I am "human." I love to learn, I make mistakes, I like to have fun and I am there to support them. Greet them with a smile, a high five and take interest in who they are. #makeitreal
I keep those cards all year. It is a simple way for them to share stuff about themselves the first day of school. Those cards have helped me find conversation starters with many of my tougher students. #makeitreal
A1 Start by playing games with them at recess, asking questions about their hobbies outside of school, and attempting to tell the lamest jokes possible throughout the day. Some say sarcasm does not belong in school, but my students enjoy it. #makeitreal
#makeitreal A1: ALWAYS praise the courage it takes to ask a Q and thank the S for getting us started. Model how to respond kindly to a "wrong" suggestion. In casual situations, ask about their opinions..NEVER judge those opinions. In short: let them feel like their voice is safe.
Q1: Relationships are more important than ever for students in today’s schools. What strategies do you use that help students accept you into their “circle of trust?”
#makeitreal
A1 I try to develop a relationship with each of my students. We talk about their weekends, interests, things they would like to learn about. Show them your interested and care about them #MakeitReal
Q2: Today, many students walked in a circle for 17 minutes, honoring lost lives and raising awareness for change. How do you support your students when they believe in a cause?
#makeitreal
Q1: My favorite activity all year is a "Dear Mrs. Clark" letter I stole from my cooperating teacher when I was student teaching. Ss are truthful and provide me insight into their EDU backgrounds while helping me understand who they are. #makeitreal
Q2: Today, many students walked in a circle for 17 minutes, honoring lost lives and raising awareness for change. How do you support your students when they believe in a cause?
#makeitreal
A2: Acknowledge their feelings and provide a safe space to discuss them. It's important that they feel as though their opinions and thoughts are valued, even at a young age. #MakeitReal
A1: As a HS teacher at an alternative school, I often correct a conversation that is getting too colorful with "No judgment but don't bring it to school" & say "No judging about what you do outside of school but know I hope you make good & safe choices this weekend." #makeitreal
A2 I wrote about this on my blog. First? Let them talk. We shhh! kids WAY too often. Let them talk. Then help them turn their voice into action. But let them talk. Please. #MakeItReal
A2 Start by listening to them. Most of my Ss walked out today. One girl chose not to because she said it was unfair to all of the other victims. So proud of all of them. #MakeItReal
Q2: Today, many students walked in a circle for 17 minutes, honoring lost lives and raising awareness for change. How do you support your students when they believe in a cause?
#makeitreal
2) Find a way to help make it happen! For #GeniusHour 1 of my girls wants to spread the message of self worth & that girls are all beautiful without extra glitz. I'm checking into ways that she can share that idea around the district. Empower your students!
#makeitreal
A2: While students are doing independent work, I like to walk around and chat with students. Students have opened up to me about many of their beliefs. I find that when they know there is someone who will listen, they feel empowered in their cause. #makeitreal
Q2: Today, many students walked in a circle for 17 minutes, honoring lost lives and raising awareness for change. How do you support your students when they believe in a cause?
#makeitreal
A2: Support doesn't always mean you agree with an idea or cause, support and respect is being honest with them about your thoughts and concerns and also if it is a cause or protest,to ensure they are safe. #makeitreal
A2- guide them to use their energy productively. Let them own it, plan it, make it happen and let them tell you what they need. Support, guide, teach #MakeItReal
A2: Students don't always know what they are standing up for. Today we had a great discussion about the power of their voice and how they can make a difference. For a middle school student it is important to educate, support and reinforce. They did a great job today! #makeitreal
Proud of our students who participated in today's "walk in". Discussed finding their voice. We wrote letters to MSDHS, developed 17 acts of kindness and talked about how we can make our community a safer place. #walkupnotout#peqpantherpride#pvpantherpride
A2 I support my students by listening. They sometimes wants to talk about situations they hear about on the news. When that happens I listen and we talk #MakeitReal
A2 Give them a platform to express their beliefs. I love it when students are passionate about change and I do not have a problem with brainstorming productive ideas with them. #MakeItReal
Q2: Teaching HS English, my students often ask me how to help them make their point or communciate their beliefs. Sometimes it's as simple as proofreading, sometimes its putting them into contact with community stakeholders. #makeitreal
#makeitreal Q2 variation: I'm gonna throw out a nuclear question. How do you support Ss when they believe in a cause passionately and QUITE THE OPPOSITE of you? For example: abortion. THIS, imo, is the real answer to this question......
Q2: Today, many students walked in a circle for 17 minutes, honoring lost lives and raising awareness for change. How do you support your students when they believe in a cause?
#makeitreal
A2: Encourage the students to learn more than what’s on the surface. Celebrate the diving into learning and the passion you see... even if you don’t agree with their cause you can still be proud of their passion and their first step at being life long learners #MakeItReal
Absolutely! Whoever's doing the talking is doing the learning...and they are learning about their cause and feelings by talking! Don't cut them off! #MakeItReal
A2: I listen and offer ideas, if they're open to them. I haven't had much experience yet with Ss and social activism so I am looking forward to reading other responses. #makeitreal
A2 I wrote about this on my blog. First? Let them talk. We shhh! kids WAY too often. Let them talk. Then help them turn their voice into action. But let them talk. Please. #MakeItReal
A2: Make time in your schedule to have open and honest discussions with students that are not content related. Our young people need to be able to share their ideas with people they trust and receive authentic feedback. They deserve to feel empowered #makeitreal
A2b: I support them by asking them why. I may not always agree with their causes. Regardless, it is important to get them questioning themselves to ensure that what they are doing is something they believe in insteaf of following the crowd. #MakeItReal
A2 One of my fave projects is “The Great So What?” Littles can research and learn about anything they choose but it has to matter to the greater world somehow. You want to learn about snakes? Ok. But YOU have to #MakeItReal not me. That shows kids how to find a cause.
Q3: Share with us those in your Twitter Circle that make a difference in your daily walk, either through sharing materials, being a support or encouragement, or bringing joy!
#makeitreal
I like that you mentioned open and honest, which may mean that I may not agree with you, but I respect that this is something important to you. #MakeItReal
Today is the 1 month commemoration of the school shooting in Parkland Florida that killed 17 students/teachers. Today, students across the country walked out to honor them and continue pointing toward change. #MakeItReal
The #bfc530 crew at 5:30 am est allows me to start every day with engaging conversations that are thought provoking. Makes the first cup of joe all the better. #MakeItReal
Q3: Share with us those in your Twitter Circle that make a difference in your daily walk, either through sharing materials, being a support or encouragement, or bringing joy!
#makeitreal
A3 Indeed! Here’s your happy for today. My Littles did this to give them a random animal I could use for grouping. We all got a kick out of it. #MakeItReal
Hey there #makeitreal! Thanks for the great conversation tonight! I hope you'll consider joining me tomorrow 9pm ET in #waledchat when we reflect on strengths and growth areas!
Thanks for informing me. Such strong amazing students for standing up and honouring the poor people that lost their lives. Such a powerful message #makeitreal
Q3: Share with us those in your Twitter Circle that make a difference in your daily walk, either through sharing materials, being a support or encouragement, or bringing joy!
#makeitreal
A1: I am real with them. I don't act like I have all of the answers or that I am perfect. I let them know that if I don't have the answer, I will do my best to help them find it. I make sure they know that I am here to listen if they want to talk. #MakeItReal
A3: Kareem Farah, Phil Strunk, Tiffany Ott, and Dennis Dill are 4 folks I've really come to admire on Twitter. Sorry, my drop down links don't seem to work and I can't remember their @ addresses. Thoughtful, honest responses and good encouragement. #makeitreal
A2: I make sure that they have the tools that they need to be successful. I don't force my own beliefs on them, and I allow them to explore their passions. #makeitreal
A2: that is an awesome way to show support! I like to have them turn their passions into researching how they can help. Also our student organization is a way to support their causes #MakeItReal#IHMarchmadness
I can’t wait to learn more...I’m new to this but I’m loving and want a strong PLN. I need it...I am so passionate but was almost selling insurance #MakeItReal
I see a lot of talking at Ss but not enough modeling. When Ss start disrespecting other Ss’s beliefs, you have a teachable moment. I’ve stood up for kids in class instead of just avoiding it. #MakeItReal
#makeitreal...more like #keepitreal here. A3: I gotta be honest. I prefer Ts over consultants and edu-heroes. Ts give honest answers to real struggles. Others tend to read catchy, vacuous bumper-stickers and get 1K likes. They have a place, but give me Ts more often than not.
Q3: I think its important to have your own circle of "teacher-friends," not just colleagues. I have a group of supporters who help me recognize my strengths and my missteps, and that helps me to learn a little every day. #makeitreal
A1 Share my world with them, let them know I'm a person too with problems, interests, favorite food & favorite colors. If we can start small sharing that then the circle of trust has a starting place. #IHMarchMadness#makeitreal
