#miched Archive
The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

Especially impt. considering decision by State Board of Ed today re: Ss https://t.co/yuB3BUhtQj
A2 14th amendment and right of ALL children to protection under law to a just and fair education!
The Kaepernick issue is definitely a relevant current event for schools right now!
The Psychotic Version based on a "loose" interpretation. Kids actually think that don't they?
Discussing an important topic on tonight’s . Feel free to join in; you don’t have to be from the mitten
Impt. topic is….The Constitution

Q3: look for opportunities to discuss current events ALL THE TIME. one of the most invaluable skills for Ss to develop
Chiming in late to ! Sarah from A2, MI HS T & curr coordinator
. Yes! And it makes it so much more relevant & meaningful for them, esp. my middle schoolers.
There have been so many issues relevant this year with the election! So many Constitutional connections
A3: How might we better understand the Constitution as it relates to immigration and refugee asylum seekers?
A3: We have been tying in Constitution by having an election week all week. Been running campaign + Constit. discussions everyday
A3:'s emails were leaked today.
There is so much mudslinging in the campaign, too.
Ideal vs Reality PLENTY of docs...
A3 Loved comparing opposites (Fox News & MSNBC &/or international outlet) on a topic & asking who's justified via law/constit
Anything or brings a lot of student interest this year with opportunities for learning
Great point! Comparing news coverage uses excellent analysis!
we did an immigration discussion yesterday centering around this issue! Just skimmed the surface!
I honestly want to make more TeachableMoments LPs based on current events.
I only have a few on my website.
Arriving late, Tyler from Clinton!
A3 I like to talk about the limits to constitutional power and the distribution. Few pay attention to local politics. often most imp
A3: Tying Constitution w/ election helps our Ss see how that document is embedded in the current events
The did an awesome last yr about & their experiences coming to U.S. VERY impactful.
That's great! Current events can be very charged, but using the Constitution as a grounding point helps https://t.co/IcBhfVrXUE

A3) using the Olympics with Lochte was a great way to teach foreign diplomacy. Protests over the pipeline for right to assemble
had an interesting chat last Sunday. Discussed Immigrant issues - Ts shared some personal stories.
Great point. Local has much more direct influence, yet not covered. Sadly, I'm guilty of not spending enough on this
Sounds like an engaging PBL project
A3 Current events can help ss understand the complex interplay of issues, policy and social change moving political change.
It was. We have a large immigrant population here, so lots had first-hand experiences to share.
Current Syrian Refugees shouldprovides ample current📰but comparing
different refugees/different time periods.
It's so powerful to ground PBL projects in local issues and concerns.
Q4: Is Constitution Day just a Social Studies topic? Is it relevant for math, science, ELA, etc?
A4: Def. grounded in Social Studies but could pull in math w/ electoral college or # of reps. ELA Ss could write/research an issue.
A4: We are running our Election Week as cross-curricular - Ss can earn ELA/SS/Communications depending on the activity
A4) applies to all subject areas, we are citizens! We teach it in the social studies and English departments
A4) A thorough understanding of our government is relevant for every subject, and a task larger than one day!
A4: one of the best classes I had in college was a stats class - Elections & Voting - math analysis of election data. Powerful!
A4 If we aren't hammering the connectivity of subjects by HS, ss are in big trouble.
A 🍎Teacher is asking if the Constitution should be discussed in other classes.🙄
The only are for each 📰.🎮 https://t.co/Y2OM44vbFy
Gotta go peeps duty (or small child dooty) calls! Have a great night/Week!
Q5: Let’s say you thought something in education was unconstitutional. What could you do? What would you be willing to do?
Interesting Math tie-in could be Ghost votes during that Election in Chicago.
Past+Present
Gotta run - evening workout = late dinner. Have a wonderful night!
A5 Well, I'm pretty sure the way we distribute $ to schools is potentially unconstitutional. Judge in CT thinks so about CT.
Q5: Tough question. Schools are complex systems. I would want to better understand the Constitution and modern interpretations.
A5: If I wanted to change the constitution, I'd start an open conversation about it, much like the chat.
A5: Make it public to start! Reach out to my networks
Q6: Is the Constitution fairly applied in education?
Reminder: We need your input for next week's chat. Share your topic ideas and questions. is You! https://t.co/spijeX4dPr

A6: The constitution fairly applied in Education? Most likely not, but we can always work to be better at it. We are fallible beings
A6: I'd argue it is not fairly applied. Look at the unequally distributed takeovers of districts.
A6: Geeze! feeling challenged by the last few ?s I think we could alway improve on providing an equitable ed environment.
A6: Geeze! feeling challenged by the last few ?s I think we could alway improve on providing an equitable ed environment.
A6 - I think far too many Ss have limited access to quality education - don't know if that's a constitution problem - but is reality
A6: My Ss are debating education/Constitution issues tomorrow!
A6: I think most educators make every attempt to treat students and community members with same legal respect
I hate to belabor the point. No Pun intended.
Do you have any prompts you could share? inquiring minds want to know :-) https://t.co/nVmYXjxnQC
A6: My Ss are debating education/Constitution issues tomorrow!
😮Like ClassDojo? AttemptedMurder?

The disparities based on SocioEconomics?
Multimillionaires vs 🍎T😬
A6: tech in education raises some concerns - not all tech resources equal. Is that Constitutional issue? Prob not, but def issue
does the Constitution apply to Americans under the age of 18 ?
Last question in 1 minute...
A6 does the Constitution apply to Americans under the age of 18?
Q7: What is an activity, strategy, resource, or question you use in the classroom which might relate to Constitution Day?
Speaking of unequal distribution,
I could have competed w/ independently.
No other competition in .
In the event of a proposed amendment, innovation may unite Ford and Eminem to shut down the assembly line of homework.
Personal + Business issues aside -
Ss. Think of how unequal distribution like completely skewers the playing field.
That's a deep question. Are you getting issues like the right to speech is more restricted in schools?
What do you mean by that?
