Michelle Waters, 9-11 English, Wayne High School. #OklaEd My 3rd grade teacher told me she liked my poem so much, she took it to the 6th grade teachers and they loved it, too. I've been a writer since. Didn't know what to make of it at the time though.
Shari Gateley, Putnam City West HS, 11th/12th ELA
We have an amazing school counselor who has started a therapy dog time at our school. The kids LOVE it! #OklaEd
A1: Love this question. This is hard not being in the classroom anymore but I have a handful of amazing kiddos that run to give me a hug everyday and come read books to me. #oklaed
Tammy Jensen Dean of Students, Crossings Christian. My counselor at PCN Suzanne Rickerts helped me understand leadership and always encouraged me as a student, leader and educator. #OklaEd

Kristin Atchley, executive director of Counseling OSDE. School Counselors are behind the scenes people. I’m so thankful for all the SCs in our state who show up for kids when recognition rarely happens! #OklaEd
A1: There have been times where Ss shared with me how upset they were that I wasn’t at school especially when I don’t tell them I am going to be gone. Never got a celebration when I returned though. Don’t know if they do that at the high school level #oklaed
Bradley Ward - #HigherEducation PhD & Policy Student, Education advocate
I had a great school counselor back in 5th grade that help me adjust from move to a new state & school.

#oklaed Janalyn Taylor, Clinton principal. I don’t remember a counselor experience from my youth. I do believe however, the counselor at Nance is making an impact on our students now. Thank you, Mr. Stratton!

A1 - Love this question. I would definitely say some do. Not all. Working on all, but with 180 Ss that prob won’t happen. LOL! I think for some Ss I provide them a safe place where they feel valued. At least, I hope that is how they feel! #oklaed
Totally missed the counselor shout out! I had an amazing HS counselor that helped navigate the process of applying for college, don't know if I would have gone through the process without her guidance. She's also the reason I ended up at #ECU#oklaed
Todd Gragg, History Educator at Midwest City High School. #MDPurpose#MDubLearns#oklaed
My favorite counselor was Donnie Condit who later served as a very pro education State Rep.
A1: I think they miss me. I'm sure they enjoy the easier work load but they aren't in AP classes or Biotech because it's easy. They miss the labs more than me! #OklaEd
My students ask me why I was gone!
I think they feel special because they get to be pulled from class to spend time with me, and I make them feel like it’s because they are superstars - not because they are “dumb” like somethings SPED kids are made out to be.
#OklaEd
A1 I work at a very small school and I get to teach my kids for 3 years. So I think some do miss me when I'm gone. Others are glad I'm not there to insist they read and write (subs don't always follow my plan...). #OklaEd
A1 - Some do and some do not. I really think it depends on my relationship with them and how much I have connected with them on a deeper level. #oklaed
I’ve had Ss I suspended as an AP go out of their way to let me know they’re on a better path now. I’d like to think they do so b/c they know I care about them. #oklaED
Ohh. Forgot to say my counselor experience. I had an awful one that people told me to avoid. However, Mr. Hill would do anything for Ss. I wonder what happened to him. #OklaEd
A1: I loved when students noticed the counselor was gone. When I returned (when I was at Norman High) I had a list of about 10 kids who needed to see me. I was a common place to just check in. 😊 #OklaEd
My school counselor memory: 1st period, 1st year to teach, 7th grade. The counselor messed up (in his words). I had 52 students in a classroom designed for 25. He promised to get it fixed by Friday! Some of those 52 are still good friends today! #oklaed
A1 cont) I encourage Ts to have a ritual for returning (whether sick or school is closed) for the Ss and themselves. It teaches empathy and reminds Ss that we are thinking about them when they are not there #oklaed
A1. I would say not because I am the attendance AP on campus & I am usually associated with truancy court & loss of credit due to attendance. I am sure however some of my Ss miss me saying good morning to them in my hall when I am off campus. #OKLAED
A1 great question! When I go back to the MS it excites me to not only have kids say they miss me but it’s most exciting when the at risk kids tell me they miss me. It’s all about the relationship! They have to know@you truly care. #oklaed
A2 - A way I have been building trust recently is through being more vulnerable and transparent. This school year has not been easy. I have been battling fatigue and extreme stress as never before. Being honest about that with colleagues and students has built more trust #oklaed
A2. To me, trust is easy. With my kiddos, I trust them to run events, mentor younger kiddos, come up with new ideas and more. With trusting the kids, the parents and families come with that. They see me trusting their kids, so they trust me. #oklaed
A1: all I know is when I am gone and I return the next morning I get knocked over with hugs. It really makes my get watery eyes. Always catches me off guard. I think they miss my structure and love. #oklaed
A2 authenticity. Be real with your kids. Let them know you’re human. Let them see you make mistakes and fix them without freaking out. Do what you say you’re going to do. Afford them basic human respect. With most kids, it’s not rocket surgery. #oklaed
A1) Our teachers use a measure called Care/Behave 3 times a year as a measure of classroom culture. We think this gives a good clue as to what kids think about their teacher https://t.co/WKW6JrAnj9#oklaed
A2: mostly empathy. Showing people you have time to listen, consistently showing up, and modeling honest mistakes. Trust is so vulnerable. I take every bit as honor to walk with a S & their family through a situation. #OklaEd
A2: so much to this question. There are so many things that break trust. To build trust you have to be real, honest, show you care, empathy when needed. By walking through tough situations with them. #OklaEd
A2: honest conversations, eat lunch with my kids, play with them at recess, positive notes home, recognition for hard work, just treat them like the diverse humans they are 🤷🏻♀️ #oklaed
A2: Honesty works well - as well as having high expectation and keeping everyone informed about shared issues. Accepting and respecting feedback and criticism helps as well. #oklaed
A2- I am consistent. I show grace. I admit mistakes. I share my life with them - I bring my kids and husband to their events. I do what I say I am going to do. #oklaed
Students- express why they’re awesome, often!
Teachers- assist when I see an opportunity.
Principal- share positive experiences from my classroom (she normally has to deal with negative things all day)!
Families- ask for and value their input!
#oklaED
A2. Trust is established by building relationships, unconditional love, we all mistakes, we’re all different, and learning in our own way...but we do it together and we support and celebrate one another! #OklaEd
A2 I think trust is built on communication and authenticity. I share who I am as a writer and reader, including my failures. (Just talked with a student today about procrastinating on our writing projects...!) #oklaed
A2. Such a good question. I think ultimately it is consistency. Consistently doing what you say you are going to do. Not being a friend but being approachable. Having high standards with proper support. #OklaEd
A2: I have some time at the start of the year with non-cheesy team/community building in my classroom. As a high school teacher, I have to earn trust and respect. It’s not always a given. #oklaed
A2. Building trust with my students is based on listening to them, their problems and their celebrations. When you show an interest in them, they know you care and it helps them trust you as well. #oklaed
A2 - A way I have been building trust recently is through being more vulnerable and transparent. This school year has not been easy. I have been battling fatigue and extreme stress as never before. Being honest about that with colleagues and students has built more trust #oklaed
A2: be real & be kind. “Assume the best intent” has become my new mantra for interactions. Take those opportunities that cost you little bit mean a lot to others #OklaEd
Q1: Yes, I recently missed a couple of days to a loss in my family. My students were anxious to see me return. We have close knit class. I often tell my students that I miss them when are absent and ask about them. #oklaed
Trust is built with open communication and transparency. Owning mistakes, sharing victories, working to support others in their work. Elevate. Encourage. Empower. #oklaed
A3: Speak with them about their own lives. Don't talk at them, but speak with them. Make time for them. A lack of time is a mask for a lack of care. #oklaed
A2: Trust is hard earned but can be established by cultivating relationships through open communication, team work, support and understanding.
#OklaEd 🍎
A2) Two pieces of research that may be relevant here. 1. Defining trust as benevolence, competence, openness, reliability, and care and 2. The evidence that student's perceiving that their T trusts them is correlated with achievement in high FRL environments #oklaed
A3: I think this is easier because my kids are younger (less social media/outside connection) but I would say all the things I said in answer 2
#oklaed
Landry Underwood, Tuttle High School. I teach English I (9th grade) and Career Exploration.
From what I remember, my high school counselors didn’t have a lot of interaction with students day to day. #oklaed
A2: Trust- so important to success! Giving action to words is one great way to earn trust. If I say I care, then I need to show that I care. If I say I will do something, then I need to get busy doing it. #oklaed Being honest and genuine also breaks down barriers of distrust.
A3: You do YOU! If you like going to their after-school activities, go. If you are firm in your classroom, be firm. Just be genuine and real with the kids/parents. #OklaEd
I build trust by taking the time to have meaningful conversations with those I serve. I've found that showing genuine care for the well-being of others is one of the best ways to build trust. #OklaEd
A3: I love my kids. I preach at them and I am clearly the boss. You can share and care but at the end of the day, I'm in charge and they know it. I can't explain how I do it, but what I do works. #OklaEd
A2. By getting to know my Ss, parents, Ts. Trust starts when you know each other & that you care about them. To include areas other than school ie. life @ home, interests, etc. you have to be approachable no matter your position. #OklaEd
A3) I truly believe that you have to know 10 things (not school related) about a kiddo to build a relationship. Have conversations with them, let them have ownership in the classrm, give them voice/choice #oklaed
A3. Check out what their interested in. Watch some anime, listen to some modern music, watch some sports, etc. It will give you something to talk about on their level and make you more relatable. #oklaed
My HS counselor slapped me. Literally. I deserved it, but not a corrective action I would recommend in a modern school. #oldschool#oklaedhttps://t.co/d7dt0G34z8

A3: Listen!! Listen!! Listen!! By building relationships you connect with students. Tell students when you are proud, tell them when you are disappointed. Candy is your office is always a bonus! They stop by for candy, I can check in and see how they are doing. #OklaEd
A3a - Teach in the same building as your wife with whom you share the same passion and love for the students. I truly believe this gives us a unique ability to connect to students. We have had such great opportunities to connect with our Ss #oklaed
A3: Go to their extracurricular activities. Make positive calls home. A random act of kindness here and there doesn’t hurt either. A free donut occasionally may do wonders. Lol. #oklaed
A3: Checking in on them. Attending events or recognizing them when they are involved in events. High Fives for good things. I used to use Journal/free writes in my science classroom as bell starters. Then try to follow up with something students wrote. Focus on Positives. #oklaed
A1) They say they do. :D I think they like that I represent something stable, and that I talk to them. I like to think they also enjoy our class activities. #OklaEd
A3 an easy way to establish connections with your kids and their parents is to show up to stuff—band concerts, baseball games, school musical, art shows, etc. THEY LOVE TO SEE YOU—and it’s a great place to establish a positive relationship w/ parents and your kids! #oklaed
Carri Hicks, Teacher turned Senator. I come from a blended family. My Elem. School Counselor was my lifeline in learning to grant mindfulness and assign feelings to change. #oklaed
A3. Trust and Honestly is the key to building a healthy relationship with my students. I am very honest with them when it comes to school, their work, and more. But I also am honest with them about my health. I treat them like adults and this has gone a long way. #oklaed
A3 Really listen to students...meet them where they are and show interest in them. Value their efforts, support them as they make mistakes and grow. #OklaEd
A3) Give honest feedback and hold to expectations. Don’t have Ss on private social media. There are great ways to connect and share real life without opening up that zone. #oklaed
A3: Get to know interests, do some research, and ask about that interest. Also, surprise them with a note, a “pass” of some sort, or gift of time. #OklaEd
A3: I love my kids. I preach at them and I am clearly the boss. You can share and care but at the end of the day, I'm in charge and they know it. I can't explain how I do it, but what I do works. #OklaEd
A3: One of the best ways I've found to build connections while maintaining healthy boundaries is sharing stories -- storybooks, historical stories, current event stories, student stories, teacher stories. Stories connect us! #OklaEd
A3: Go to their extracurricular activities. Make positive calls home. A random act of kindness here and there doesn’t hurt either. A free donut occasionally may do wonders. Lol. #oklaed
A2 Students need to know you care. However, they need to know there are boundaries. Others need to see that the teacher loves his/her subject area and do what they say they are going to do. #OklaEd
A2) I think building trust happens the same way no matter who you are dealing with. Do what you say you are going to do, listen, apologize when necessary, fix your mistakes. #OklaEd
A3b - Also ask them questions and listen, really listen, to their answers. Seek common ways to build relationships. Let them know you care daily. Tell students you missed them when you are gone or they are gone. #oklaed
A1: I like to think so! Building a team/family atmosphere in the classroom where each student contributes to the group. Making time when you return to celebrate the successes you’ve missed with them. Having students tell you they missed you and actually mean it #oklaed
This is it. My kids get a scary (to some standards) amount of choice in their day. I got a new kid last week & he was in shock over it. Our class is just...different. We love it. I love it #oklaed
A3) I truly believe that you have to know 10 things (not school related) about a kiddo to build a relationship. Have conversations with them, let them have ownership in the classrm, give them voice/choice #oklaed
Q2: I think the old say remains true: "actions speak louder than words." I greet my students every day at the door of my classroom. Students tell me about their evening or some special things that have happened. #oklaed
A1 first we have to honestly care. They have to always understand you are going to hold them accountable. They don’t get a pass from being accountable no matter how good the relationship. #oklaed
A3: Bring yourself to their level and get a sense of their “world” “Great leaders know their soldiers” - same concept applies.
This is how I learned to do the Floss dance!
#OklaEd 🍎
I love sharing stories! They not only help students connect to whatever content we're learning, but they can help students better understand why we're learning. As humans, we are wired for story! #oklaed
I do not like calling parents. Last year, after an #oklaed chat, I was motivated to get over that so I spent a few weeks just calling students homes and bragging on them. It really helped.
A1: My staff says they miss me when I am gone LOL! As a HS T, yes they always said they missed me. I ran into some of my MAEL students from Sep. on Sat. They were gracious & said they missed seeing me, having me in class. People know when you genuinely care about them. #oklaed
A4: I almost always start with “do you need me to just listen, provide feedback, or offer suggestions?” I’ll respect any of these. I try to remember small details and refer to them so they know I’ve heard them. #OklaEd
A4: same as before- ask about their individual experiences & really listen to their response. Really notice when they do good things and celebrate that. Share a smile, etc. #oklaed
A1: I am missing them fiercely this yr. Reflecting on my time as a T - creating a space w mutual respect & clear expectations builds community. As the T you are kind of like the Mayor of the city. When the Mayor is out the city runs a little differently you could say 😉 #oklaed
Sorry guys. I got distracted listening to H.E.R. singing. It is so refreshing to see musicians again (sing and play instruments). I want to say all that has been said so far was probably great. #OklaEd
It’s funny you mention “names” but I had a discussion with a peer & a disturbance was caused by a student whose name was mispronounced by a teacher. You also have to know the pronunciation of names as well. #OklaEd
A4 - As far as the classroom goes - I do a lot of choice in my classes and do a lot of ind. conferences for feedback.
W/relationships - I try to make sure I am present, write notes randomly, and show up at their events. #oklaed
Mine are very EC but something as simple as during the class intro saying we missed you yesterday. We had a song we sang to greet each other in the morning and used that as our time to remind the Ss that we missed them #oklaed
A2: Invest in your students. Attend their events and support them on the hard days. I send emails out weekly to 8 parents (2 Ss per class period). Just to let them know the positives I see with their Ss. Trust in the classroom is vital for students to want to learn #oklaed
A4) Actually talking to individuals as often as possible. Give feedback with specificity to individuals, not just blanket statements to the whole group all the time. #oklaed
Recently, I’ve been talking with defensive parents at IEP meetings. They have reasons to be upset - they weren’t treated very well previously.
I constantly remind the parents that I am on the student’s side, and that we are working as a team! #OklaED
A4: I hate the word everyone! Everyone is doing this, ALL teachers are doing this. NO!! Be specific to the student, the teacher, the observation, the practice, the parent, etc. Focusing on specifics that pertain to that person or situation instead of generalizations. #OklaEd
A2: Children will rise to the expectations set before them. I would never expect more from my Ss than what I'm willing to give. Modeling those skills of working hard for goals and taking a breath when things get hard builds that trust. #oklaed
You would be surprised how much EC items work for all grade levels. Anything that shows care works. I think I see a Passingnotes episode in your future. #OklaEd
Absolutely! You had better know their name as they claim it. A mistake can be forgiven if genuine effort in getting it right is there, but disinterest is a game ender for sure! #oklaEd
It’s funny you mention “names” but I had a discussion with a peer & a disturbance was caused by a student whose name was mispronounced by a teacher. You also have to know the pronunciation of names as well. #OklaEd
Welcome to tonight's #OklaED Chat! We will follow the typical Q1/A1 answer format. Retweet w/ comment to respond so we all can see the Q's and A's you post. Oh! Be sure to use the #Oklaed hashtag in your posts. Let's have some fun & LEARN new strategies from each other!
A4: The biggest key for me (and something I'm working on to improve) is being a good listener. I've always got a million things running through my mind; I have to intentionally LISTEN to better serve each person. #oklaed
When I talk with students, I treat them how I want my own kids treated. The same with parents. I am parent too. It’s hard sometimes and we are all in this together. #oklaed
A4 PART B: This includes the #AppleWatch Put it away. You're not doing anyone favors by checking your phone or watch and say "I won't answer that". CRAP, Don't even look. #FOCUS#oklaed#RANTOVER
A4: Listen! Eye Contact, Listen, rephrase or ask questions if you need clarification. I will often ask, so what is it you need from me. It is important for people to fee they are the most important thing at that moment in time. What they are saying matters to them,Listen! #OklaEd
This is really huge. I feel so bad if I mispronounced a student name. I also found out this year that if they really like you then they are really forgiving about this. Have a student whose name I mess up constantly. She is so forgiving of me. #OklaEd
Jessica Robinson, Altus High School - my high school counselor was there for me when my father passed at school. She also helped me through my grief and gave me space I owe her so much. ❤️ #oklaed
Also, make sure your body language says “I’m present. I’m ready for connection.” Are you standing over people, looking down? Do you have a huge desk between you? #oklaED
A5: A simple apology goes a long way. Not one of those "sorry you're upset" sort of things, but I real "sorry I made a mistake" type of apology. #oklaed
A4) It is not only critical to prioritize that person, it is also in how you choose to respond. Deloitte's "Courageous Principals" 4 key communication errors: Quick fixing, steam rolling, box checking, and cherry picking https://t.co/KOj52vA0Rz#oklaed
A5 honesty and a real apology. You don’t always need to go into details about an outside cause of your behavior, but most of the time people will understand when you screw up one time—if you already have that foundation of trust built. #oklaed
A5: I constantly have to restore relationships with my students. I speak to the student one on one. I speak with him or her why I got on to him or her. But I always end the conversation with how much I care about them and want them to succeed. Sometimes this works. #oklaed
A2) I think consistency and structure is the key to building trust with students. Doing what you say you will do and keeping children 1st builds trust with parents. #oklaed
I had a student tell me this year I was the first teacher to use the apostrophe and capital in spelling her name every time. She’s in third grade 😔 #oklaed
A4 don’t be on your phone or computerwhen someone is talking to you. And don’t be walking away as they are talking to you. Either be there or schedule a time when you can. #oklaed
A3: In elem. it is critical to involve the family in healthy relationships & boundaries. Reaching out to make a positive phone call home before situations arise is critical in building trust. This allows the family to be involved and sets a tone of professionalism. #oklaed
A5) Oh my goodness! I admit I messed up regularly. I don't put on an act that I'm perfect. I've apologized to Ss, Ts, Ps, As, etc. I also can be intimidating unintentionally so sometimes I have upset people without realizing it and have to apologize for that. #oklaed
A5: correcting mistakes quickly! If I mess up, I admit it. When someone sees that you’re not afraid to be wrong, walls can be broken/relationships can be restored. #OklaEd
A1: Well I usually start with “How much did you miss me?” So they tell me they do regardless haha But I think we all crave consistency and stability especially in school. 6 different teachers to get used to and react to every day is a lot. #oklaed
A4: I have to admit I do this naturally and don’t know what I am actually doing. I have created a monster though. They start to fight over the attention. #oklaed
A5: let’s just say the biggest regret of my career is when I allowed a student to walk out of my office when they were agitated with me-probably because of a little them, a little me. Never got a chance to mend the relationship and I never will. Don’t be like me. #OklaEd
A5: mean it when giving the apology! A simple, true “I’m sorry” can move mountains. Just saying it because it is expected is a can of lighter fluid tossed on a fire. #OklaEd
A5: Absolutely, we all fall short. Own it, apologize for the situation. You know the part you played, be honest, authentic and mean it when you are working to repair. Lay blame aside, just own your own mistake genuinely. #oklaed
A4. By taking the time to learn something specific about them. It could be something about their culture, interests, family, etc. then showing them that you know it through conversation & make sure they get your undivided attention. #OklaEd
A5: I apologize to my students a lot. We have class meetings, we think about how to fix the bad, and focus on the good. We have a lot of conversations (I’m realizing now we truly have a LOT of conversations) #oklaed
The @USSTulsa will home port in San Diego. Figuring there's some middle school teachers in #oklaed working on a letter writing unit - why not these folks? Let's show them what that #Tulsa name means. @MayorTaylor Commissioning next Saturday!
A5: Be real. Talk through it. So often, damaged relationships are the result of miscommunication. Be very intentional & clear with your communication. Conduct conversations in person or via phone call versus email/text/social where tone & intent can be misinterpreted. #OklaEd
A5: Absolutely, we all fall short. Own it, apologize for the situation. You know the part you played, be honest, authentic and mean it when you are working to repair. Lay blame aside, just own your own mistake genuinely. #oklaed
A4: Eye contact, calling them by name so they know you see them, and being present. It takes practice not to let your mind wander, but being present and truly listening is essential. #oklaed
A4: We don't have to act like Ss aren't real people. Treat them with respect like you would anyone else in your life. Be genuine in your apology, admit your mistake, be better next time. Right??? #oklaed
Q5: When I blow it with a child or colleague, I own it. Being humble, taking responsibility, and asking forgiveness goes a long way in strengthening relationships and building trust. #OklaEd
Jessica Robinson, Altus High School - my high school counselor was there for me when my father passed at school. She also helped me through my grief and gave me space I owe her so much. ❤️ #oklaed
A5) When you are consistent and already have a connection and/or respect a simple and genuine, "hey sorry about the other day" is all it will take. But you have to have the trust and respect established first. #oklaed
A4: We don't have to act like Ss aren't real people. Treat them with respect like you would anyone else in your life. Be genuine in your apology, admit your mistake, be better next time. Right??? #oklaed
A6 our vision statement is pretty old...probably could use some revamping to address that. I think that’s an area where I would want some student input. #oklaed
Making sure your “space” i.e. social media, home life, etc. is YOURS. Attending school events is vital in building connections, but knowing when to “throw the towel in” on a day and go home and binge some Netflix away from school even when Ss may want you at an event #oklaed
A6: Yes, rules have been strict, but only to benefit the students in the long run. Healthy does not always have to equate to "happy" or "appeasement." #oklaed
A3) We have a joke of the day, student-created special handshakes. I also conference with students to determine goals, preferences & struggles. #oklaed
A5: When I have a broken relationship whether from my doing or the other person, I make it a habit to keep that person on my prayer list. A change in my heart has been a great mender of relationships! #oklaed I try to always look for a change in myself first.
Yep. My personal phonetic code may look strange next to the type on the roster, but it helps remind me in getting it right. How hard is it to take the 5 seconds to try? #oklaed
A5 - My building has had high admin turnover. So I have walked into a situation where there is little trust. Time. It will take time to earn trust. P’s, T’s, and S’s need to see that I am not going anywhere. Truly listening and being empathetic #oklaed
A6. This year our main focus has been building relationships with our students. Reaching out to the lost and trying to connect to them when we maybe haven't before. Keep trying, keep trying, keep trying. #OklaEd
A6 - My classroom vision is to educate tomorrow's citizens today. This is impossible without an investment of a healthy relationship into the student. #oklaed
A5) So tough to do, but keeping the BUT out of the I'm sorry. "Sorry I lost my temper with you, BUT you were..." or "Sorry I made that comment, BUT you are always saying..." Modeling solid sincere apologies. #OklaED
A6) Our vision is that the HS diploma is not a terminal degree. Our mission is to create a legacies of excellence and character. We want to prepare our Ss to be the best adult they can be on whatever path they choose. #oklaed
A6: Ours is definitely student-centered, just like everything we do should be based on what’s best for students not what’s comfortable for the adults. #oklaed#SafeChallengedReady
A5: Being vulnerable and allowing yourself and students grace. Honesty is still the best policy. Be vulnerable enough to admit a shortcoming or shed light on the instance. #oklaed
A6) yes, our dept's mission and vision has healthy relationships at the core b/c we promote & support the establishing of healthy relationships btwn Ts and Ss, Ps and Ss, Ps and Ts. All around #oklaed
A6: I’m working on core values of my department. I want my team to share their values with the team and have collaborative values so we can understand what we are working towards at all times. It’s in process. #OklaEd
A6 absolutely. It's all about relationships. #eked every kid every day. It's about them, not me. #oklaed how can I support the great things Ts are doing or want to do and coach them to be better in other areas.
A6: Building healthy relationships is something I talk often about with our staff. It is part of mission. We are working this year to #BeTheONE for our students and one another. Be the person that makes a difference, is there for them, pushes them to be their best.#oklaed
A6. Explicitly, no. I think it could be argued that it implies it, but I don't think that's enough. This would be a great discussion to bring to the leadership team #oklaed
I've missed so many ?s. Glad Q3 rolled around in my feed again. You have to be genuine. Kids spot a fake. Connect in a way you normally connect with people. Just make sure you are not discussing things like you are friends. They have friends already #OklaEd
A6: Yes. I am sure it does and did when I was in the classroom. However, I had my own vision and mission statement for my classroom. It helped the S's take ownership in the class. #oklaed
A2: Respect is crucial. Whenever I have an issue I ask “what have I done to disrespect you?” It usually deescalates things quickly, and I genuinely want to know. Respect + Empathy = Trust #oklaed
A4: By being present and intentional! You have been soughts out by that person for a reason so make time for them. Students and Parents often need someone to talk to that shows interest.
Even on my rough days students still need me on my listening “A” game. #oklaed
A6: it is, but TBH... our vision, mission, etc package has gotten to be long enough to require scrolling when out together. I like things simple & straight forward: kids first. #OklaEd
A6: most difficult part of our mission statement is “partner with parents”. This is difficult from both sides. Sometimes There are times we just want to deal with the situation not partner. But when we partner, the student benefits. Seeing that example is so important. #OklaEd
A6 - Our leadership team had its first meeting a week ago, we will have another this week. We are starting PBIS, from square 1. So, we are headed there. #oklaed
We have to be no-nonsense and nurturing. If you want a good book, you should check out "Every Student, Every Day" by @KKB_CT3 at @CT3Education It will change your world. #oklaed
A6: Each building I have served in had a school culture that focused on servant leadership. Healthy relationships might not have been expressly written in the statement, but it was definitely an expectation. #oklaed
A7: For staff meetings, end it with a video of students giving shout outs to staff members. Super powerful and takes less than 2 minutes.
For kids, always tell them that you love them. Literally. Some of them never hear it, hence the tough convo to begin with. #OklaEd
A7- I always start and end w/a compliment. My goal w/this is a reminder that at the end of the day we are on the same team and want the same things. #oklaed
A7. I try to be positive most of the time. But I am also very honest. I ask for opinions and thoughts a lot so I seek a discussion. And respect others thoughts. Then I go in @Biobellrocks room to vent. Then feel great. #OklaED
We do the same, but it was a very unusual name and pronunciation without speaking the family’s home language meant that only her immediate family used her full name. Still stuck with me because I wanted to be able to do that for her. #oklaed
A7: If you aren't laughing you aren't living. I've really made an effort this year to be more positive, to say please and thank you and I appreciate you and to let both kids and colleagues know they are valued. #oklaed
A7 when I have to have one of “those” conversations with my kids, I generally wrap up with something like “you know I’m not happy about X but I still love you, right?” Since I am not the most outwardly emotional person, this hits home and helps us get back on track. #oklaed
A7) working on it, but keep in mind that all people are doing the best they can with the resources that they have (including Ss, Ts, Ps, etc). I can help if I can connect to resources and focus on the progress/growth of the individual #oklaed
Q7: I smile. I speak life. After talking through difficult topics, I end the conversation with thanksgiving and positive affirmations. We are a TEAM! #OklaEd
#A7 - In conversations with other T's I will always try to highlight positive things about Ss. I really cannot stand negativity as educators we have to constantly guard against it because our Ss need us to believe in them. #oklaed
A7. Ending the day on a positive note is all in your attitude. Even when the day has been tough or the subject difficult, ending the day with a smile starts with you. #OklaEd
A7: Gratitude is an essential trait/disposition here. Always be thankful and appreciative of honest feedback from family, friends, and colleagues alike. #oklaed
I may need some help with this! I am great at talking positive with students and families, but I struggle with some staff in my building. I’m civil, but may come across as negative and cynical. I definitely feel that way. 🤦🏻♀️ #OklaEd
A7) I like to ask the Principal to give shoutouts during the announcements. I've been known to send in a positive office referral for a teacher as well. :D It's fun! #OklaEd
A7) Share "Good Things" in meetings, "oreo" the tough conversations with positives on the front and back end, follow up with people after a tough conversation, recognize positives and fill buckets so the negatives don't bankrupt the acct. #oklaed
A7 We celebebrate growth and achievement every day. We discuss our actions and how they effect others...this sets the stage for meaningful conversations when tough situations arise...part of our daily convo. #OklaEd
A5: Admitting That I make mistakes is the first step. Making time to sit down with that person or give them some encouragement! Students model behavior based on what they see through teachers- showing a student that each day is a clean slate is critical for success #oklaed
A7: This is done with ease when you’ve established clear expectations and built a positive relationship w others. People can take “tough” conversations better when they know you have their best in mind. It’s not personal. #oklaED
A7: It starts with our own attitude. It’s all in the approach.....if you go in looking for a fight you’ll most likely find one. Tough situations can have positive endings....it’s all in the approach. #oklaed#RelationshipsMatter
A7: A single, genuine smile goes a long way. One of my new colleagues in the Senate told me it's disarming. I think that's a huge compliment to being able to make someone feel warm or welcome, even if there's a pressing situation to attend to. #oklaed
A7: I take the high road. I always remind the students how they are important. I like to bring up one of their past accomplishments to cap of a conversation I have with them. It never hurts to build people up, sincerely. #oklaed
A7: I try to start & end crucial conversations with a positive or some sort. When we have a large group together I LOVE to lead a spirit clap! Fun - makes people smile! I am huge on trying to end on positive vibes, providing encouragement & elevating the atmosphere. #oklaed
A7) Need to brag on librarian @shehopper who rocked positive interactions this week w/ a S who was doing all the things that get under your skin in the hallway. Called her in, had a tough convo, an hour later the girl came ON HER OWN and apologized. Hugged it out! #OklaED
So true. But I need to figure out what I do because I think others can do it too. I remember one time one Ss shared I am one of few Ts who make her feel she is smart. She was an AP student. #OklaEd

A7 Part 2) Also, read Crucial Conversations. It is incredible and has made me an effective coach of adults (for kids I have another recommendation as well "How to talk to kids so they will listen and listen so they will talk" https://t.co/ZDTCRfBzC6) #oklaed
A7: Ask open ended questions. Most things I bring to the T's are not a requirement. So if I leave ideas with T's they are open to using them. Nobody wants or likes change, it is hard. #oklaed
A7: I try to start with the not so positive so I can always end on good. #growthmindset can play a big part in this. Words like yet are great to use. #oklaed
I learned a lot of how to have tough conversations from you! You always show respect for others and remind them that you have their best interest in mind as well as the Ss/Fs, even if they don't see it at the time #oklaed
A8 - I am present in my classroom. I walk the room. I look for heads down or lack of engagement and I adjust if I need to. I also leave a post-it notes letting them know they can take a break if they need to or to remind them I love them. #oklaed

A8: It's so easy to get mad at a student for misbehaving or not doing work or both. When I notice something is wrong, I just speak with the student one on one to get down to the root of the issue. I offer my support, and I tell them one good thing about them. #oklaed
A6: Teaching students that a HS Diploma is not a terminal degree.
It has been eye opening teaching Career Exploration. Many Ss still have the mindset that a HS Dip. is it. Through Career Exploration I encourage students to look at their skill set and push themselves #oklaed
A7 - It goes back to to trust. You can have hard conversations and walk away with a positive ending, if there is already an established trust relationship. However, I currently have a P that I am struggling to build a rapport with, she trusts nobody #oklaed#trying
A8. I watch the mood of the classroom and the students. If I feel something going on, I ask. Sometime pull them to the side. Or just send a text because there is a lot of people around. Tell the kids I am there when they are ready to talk. #oklaed
A8: We use climate surveys w staff, we want to make sure things are going well. With students we have different ways they can report situations/incidents/concerns privately. Usually you can feel things in the "air" if you spend time in the bldg or at events. #oklaed

A7 Positive interactions with our teams has to be routine and not an abnormal occurrence. 1:1 encouraging conversations, appreciation emails, and a direct thank you are small tokens for the work that our teams do. These should characterize our day-to-day engagement #oklaed

A8: I'm a pit bull when it comes to protecting my kids. They know it. We are a team, every hour all day long. And if the day or life is dragging my Ss down then we deal with it. I listen or help when I can and they trust me to find to do it. #oklaed
Have you ever had parents fill out a survey? Not gonna lie, I wouldn’t want to do one at this moment. Still working to build better relationships with parents. #oklaed

A8: Know their stories. If they are willing to tell me, I drop what I’m doing to listen. Be familiar with available resources, use them as needed, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Everybody matters!! #oklaed#RealtionshipsAreKey
A8) As admin, I try to roll out new things slowly and intentionally to lessen any stress it may cause. Have 1on1 convos for change. Differentiate for the adults even. Participate in dress up days. Do nice things for Ts. #oklaed
A8) Unfortunately, admin have a great ways to measure poor behavior (aka. referral data) rather than positive behaviors. But, the best method of monitoring climate is simple: ASK. Design thinking calls for a process of empathizing to design solutions. Do it. #oklaed
A7: I am a firm believer in addressing the “tough” conversation first and ending on a positive note. Getting Ss to understand that you like them but their behavior/disruptions you don’t like. Getting them to see the difference in the two helps build pos. relationships #oklaed
A8 We have a growth mindset in kindergarten...our classroom is a safe place to make mistakes, and learn in your own way. Students share their work and achievements every day and we celebrate as a class! #OklaEd

A8: Be still and listen - know the people in your work world and listen for signs of trauma. Listen and care. Build them up! Oftentimes trauma will destroy a person's confidence & at times, we must build confidence by helping them be successful. #oklaed
A8: When I was a sitting principal we built “weeklies” into our monitoring practices, where teachers got face-to-face time with an administration each week as a check-in and structure for feedback. It was time consuming but well-worth it. #oklaEd
