QUESTION 1: When we empower our students to take on responsibilities in our classroom, we are asking them for their help in order to make things run smoothly. What benefits can this bring? #LearnLAP
A1: Students take pride and ownership in their environment and their work. The atmosphere is happy and upbeat, and the students are productive. #learnlap
A1 Like with anything, personal ownership leads to greater buy in and investment in the process. If we want Ss to be a part of the learning, make them part of the process as well. #learnlap
Q1 - When students take more ownership and responsibility for the classroom, they will likely take more ownership and responsibility for their learning. #LearnLAP
A1. When students have the opportunity to take responsibility in their learning, we are teaching them a lifeskill. Eventually, no one will be there to help you with this step. Students are more creative and empowered from this process. #learnlap
QUESTION 1: When we empower our students to take on responsibilities in our classroom, we are asking them for their help in order to make things run smoothly. What benefits can this bring? #LearnLAP
A1 Learning to take on responsibility helps Ss become more independent, trust themselves, improve executive functionality & fosters a sense of caring. Helps build a community of learners who are developing resilience and morals they can utilize the rest of their lives. #LearnLAP
A1: when Ss take responsibility for things in the classroom it makes it more meaningful and they feel like more of a valued member of the class #learnlap
#LearnLAP
A1. It is very similar to what happens when we empower anyone who is involved in anything... they feel a part of something, they work harder to make things run smoothly, the relationships build and grow, and the ownership becomes valued and hopefully we inspire leaders.
A1: Increased self-efficacy, and students working with each other to put out fires. I have found that often times, before I need to step in address behavior, leaders in my class are already going over to talk to the S about what was done/said. They feel empowered! #learnlap
A1: When students have confidence in what they are doing, they flourish endlessly and fears of the unknown or ridicule dissipate. Giving them responsibility for how things go in the classroom foster this. #learnlap
QUESTION 1: When we empower our students to take on responsibilities in our classroom, we are asking them for their help in order to make things run smoothly. What benefits can this bring? #LearnLAP
A1: Increased student confidence, engagement, leadership abilities, and teamwork to name few! I also think less wasted time, less T stress, and more effective instructional time. #learnlap
A1: When we empower Ss as co-owners of the class activities and outcomes they recognize their own abilities to affect change and control outcomes. They are trusted partners and recognize they also own the success or failure of what is happening in the class. #LearnLAP
A1 Students taking on important roles in their classrooms makes them have a greater ownership of the class and therefore their learning. The more responsibility the more learning. #LearnLAP
A1. It allows our Ss to take ownership of their classroom surroundings, materials, and instruments used in learning. It also allows Ss to practice leadership qualities with one another through guidance and assistance. #learnlap
A1: Taking on class responsibilities gives students ownership of their environment and allows them to learn skills outside of the academic realm #LearnLAP
A1: This gives students a sense of responsibility and that they are part of something greater than just themselves. It teaches them skills to become a part of a team working towards the same goal #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: What responsibilities do you currently allow your students to do in the classroom? Are they assigned jobs? Can anyone do any of the tasks? #LearnLAP
A2: Students are mainly given ownership of their learning by completing a variety of tasks of their choosing to understand the content. However, if they finish, there is a "help wanted" board of tasks that need to be completed #learnlap
QUESTION 2: What responsibilities do you currently allow your students to do in the classroom? Are they assigned jobs? Can anyone do any of the tasks? #LearnLAP
A2: As a new teacher, I plan on assigning jobs. I want Ss to feel like they are a part of the process and that they matter. I want them to be a part of how the classroom functions. #learnlap
A1: Providing students with classroom responsibilities can promote leadership, a sense of belonging, and a feeling of excelling at something other than academics. #learnlap
A2: I don't assign jobs. They support each other academically. I have some who collect work for students who are absent. Some who will go grab paper towels from the bathroom. Anyone can do these tasks. I also do not have much need for "jobs" in my room presently. #learnlap
A2 I am an instructional Technology coordinator so from the ts I work with it varies from classroom to classroom. I hope to create a chrome squad and podcast crew. We already have a news crew. These ss prepare the news for Friday.
#learnlap
It makes them feel ownership over their learning and the environment. Holds each other accountable instead of always relying on the adult. It teaches them skills they will need in life such as collaborating and leading. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 1: When we empower our students to take on responsibilities in our classroom, we are asking them for their help in order to make things run smoothly. What benefits can this bring? #LearnLAP
A2: When I was teaching, my jobs were assigned. We changed them periodically or if someone gave up the job, someone else was given the job. Classroom librarian, pencil person, table captains, supply manager, etc. #LearnLAP
A1: Teaching our Ss responsibility is an essential part of the learning process. It builds self-confidence and life-skills that are vital for success. It makes you feel like an important part of the team. It gives you purpose!#LearnLAP 💪🏻
A2.
#LearnLAP
Anyone can do any job. But in my most successful classroom, students applied and interviewed for the jobs they wanted in the class. This was a formal process for librarian, computer tech, pencil sharpener, paper paper, and so on.. it's our class, our job!
QUESTION 2: What responsibilities do you currently allow your students to do in the classroom? Are they assigned jobs? Can anyone do any of the tasks? #LearnLAP
A2 students think up jobs- collectively- I don’t assign them. I encourage them to look around and think about what would make our class better, cleaner, more organized. Before long-they come up with jobs, list them, and schedules! #learnlap
QUESTION 2: What responsibilities do you currently allow your students to do in the classroom? Are they assigned jobs? Can anyone do any of the tasks? #LearnLAP
A2 - Here are all of the assigned jobs we had in the past few years: https://t.co/69hPbqd0zL Everyone can do anyone's job, but the assigned student is responsible for making sure it gets done each day. #LearnLAP
A2: I don't have any assigned jobs because my room is a resource room & ss aren't in there everyday. Some jobs any ss can do include washing the board, straightening the library, & sharpening pencils. Ss are great about jumping in & helping w/ whatever needs to be done. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: What responsibilities do you currently allow your students to do in the classroom? Are they assigned jobs? Can anyone do any of the tasks? #LearnLAP
A2b. I have some students who write a “to-do” list for absent students and stick them in the absent folder. The Ss can check Google Classroom too, but this gives them a chance to get more information. Some Ss like to answer the phones, others like to clean up labs, etc. #learnlap
A2: In my building we have 4th and 5th graders show new students around the building. Our 5th graders also deliver teacher mail and notes, assist with Field Day, and provide input for school events #LearnLAP
A2 Currently, I have attendance taker, paper, test shield, assignment passers/collectors,timer, “catcher upper” for absent Ss (these are first come first serve that I rotate) Ss also can answer my phone, empty pencil sharpener and other misc jobs that aren’t assigned #LearnLAP
A2: No official "jobs" yet, though I'm thinking about adding some. Ss have access to materials, don't have to ask. Also would sometimes have student tweeters, responsible for documenting our learning to share on social media #learnlap
A2 Depends on the class but dates, organization, grouping leads, building assignments and rubrics are all leadership opportunities I’ve had kids direct involvement in. That led to more volunteering and kids finding stuff on their own to share with class. #LearnLAP
A2: I have line leader, caboose, paper Passer, lunch count, Messenger, floor cleaner, librarian. I assignthem and rotate each week, and when someone is absent, I letsomeone take that job over. #learnLAP
I try and give my MS Ss as many roles as possible. They enjoy helping out with technology and decorating the room. They like taking attendance. #LearnLAP I also let them rotate books in the book corner. No area is off limits. It is our room.
QUESTION 2: What responsibilities do you currently allow your students to do in the classroom? Are they assigned jobs? Can anyone do any of the tasks? #LearnLAP
A3- I know ss could help me with helping ts in the classroom when there is a tech issue. They could also help me with creating tutorial videos to help other ss use certain websites or providing helpful tips on different digital programs.
#learnlap
A2 - Here are all of the collaborative responsibilities we've had in the past few years: https://t.co/F227YYNIBh
No one is assigned these tasks because many of them are unpredictable. It's best when we all do these as we see them. #LearnLAP
Q2 - I quit assigning “jobs” a year ago and transitioned to a “daily helper” role. I found less time was spent picking jobs each week and kiddos forgetting what job they had, etc. It was much smoother having one student responsible for all tasks each day. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 2: What responsibilities do you currently allow your students to do in the classroom? Are they assigned jobs? Can anyone do any of the tasks? #LearnLAP
A2 I really love it when students have opportunities to teach their peers- whether it's with a partner, small group, or with the whole class. Everyone listens > everyone grows > especially student(s) doing the teaching. #LearnLAP
A2: We have classroom "leadership teams". Ss fill out applications for the teams they would like to be a part of. They have to reflect on their strengths/interests to decide what teams to apply for. They are assigned teams based on their applications #LearnLAP
A2: Line leader door holders, caboose, Material Handlers, Bankers, Attendance Clerk, Lab Assistants, Historians, Photographers, Librarians, Tech Assistants, etc. I'm self-contained, 4th grade, so we have lots of jobs. Some are shared; some are static. #learnlap
A3: We have a LMS, so a lot of the jobs I gave previously are not needed now. However, I have students who volunteer to do various things. I generally have them take over that "job" if it is something they like to do. #learnlap
A2. Ss can help in clean-up, pass things out, time and record keeping for experiments, assisting other Ss, leading discussions, share ideas in circle time, different project idea suggestions. #learnlap
A2: In Israel it's very common to have many S jobs: board eraser, computer & projector and of course "S on duty" who is in charge of keeping the class clean. #LearnLAP
My grandson had a SS classroom that was “the White House” they even had secret service agents to check the halls and locations in advance of their class traveling three. Cabinet members and department directors. So neat #Learnlap
Yes! Having a shared classroom vision and mission drives them to all work towards a similar goal. This is something that I think even adults in schools have a hard time doing at times #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: It can be hard to give up control in the classroom, but children need opportunities to practice & fail in order to learn! What tasks do you currently do that you know could be done by your students? How might you hand these responsibilities over to them? #LearnLAP
Ss have done lunch count and notes to office, books to library....so much more they can do which would have saved me time. In retrospect they often asked if they "could help with something" - totally missed that! #learnlap
We have a maintenance crew, technology team, teachers in training, transition team, and kindness crew. Each team has different jobs that the students decide who does what and have the responsibility to make changes to who does what on their own within their "team" #LearnLAP
A1: It gets their buy in to the learning process. When Ss are in charge of things, that ownership motivates them to be better. Their engagement increases and Ts can then focus on deeper learning. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 1: When we empower our students to take on responsibilities in our classroom, we are asking them for their help in order to make things run smoothly. What benefits can this bring? #LearnLAP
Love the idea of classroom "leadership teams" -- Adults in various professions participate in leadership teams so why shouldn't Ss? #LearnLAP#JREchat#JRErocks
A2: We have classroom "leadership teams". Ss fill out applications for the teams they would like to be a part of. They have to reflect on their strengths/interests to decide what teams to apply for. They are assigned teams based on their applications #LearnLAP
A3: In the classroom, I learned through the years, especially when I was teaching middle school, that Ss could do much of what I was taking the time to do: attendance, passing out supplies, cleaning and organizing. I delegated these tasks to my “busy bodies” in MS. #LearnLAP
A1. Empowering students with class responsibilities encourages leadership (great leaders make more leaders) and builds character through integrity. #LearnLAP
A3: I think it could be interesting to have the students write the following days bell ringer questions as their exit slip. Choose one question from the submissions. #learnlap
QUESTION 3: It can be hard to give up control in the classroom, but children need opportunities to practice & fail in order to learn! What tasks do you currently do that you know could be done by your students? How might you hand these responsibilities over to them? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: It can be hard to give up control in the classroom, but children need opportunities to practice & fail in order to learn! What tasks do you currently do that you know could be done by your students? How might you hand these responsibilities over to them? #LearnLAP
A3: I was listening to a podcast by @TeacherAdvice earlier today called "How to Survive and Thrive as a New Teacher." In it, she stated how Ss should be working harder than the teachers. I know that the Ss could take attendance and do other quick tasks. #learnlap
A3: Pretty much the only tasks would be to hand back work and answer the phone. I'm not comfortable turning those tasks over to the Ss. However, I think having my students doing and managing a lot of the things doing in the class on a regular basis has been positive. #learnlap
Q3 - My students can help more with transitions and preparation. I tend to gather and put away materials for lessons, small groups, stations, etc. where students could manage those tasks. I need to give up my own control issues to better equip and empower my students. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 3: It can be hard to give up control in the classroom, but children need opportunities to practice & fail in order to learn! What tasks do you currently do that you know could be done by your students? How might you hand these responsibilities over to them? #LearnLAP
A3 Choice in Ss assign. output. I am going to provide more choices in what Ss can show as mastery of learning. I do a bit of this now but want Ss to take ownership and come up w/ ideas on their own. Should provide more buy in, creativity and freedom. #LearnLAP
Through the years, I've relied on my students to be teachers of any tech tool. It's a win-win! Once we know how to use something, students can really be creative in their creations, presentations, and showing their learning. #learnlap
QUESTION 3: It can be hard to give up control in the classroom, but children need opportunities to practice & fail in order to learn! What tasks do you currently do that you know could be done by your students? How might you hand these responsibilities over to them? #LearnLAP
Love it! Now I'm starting to think about how I could have students submit applications to be "Tech Experts" on a particular day to teach them that skill... Thanks for sparking the idea! #learnlap
I liked your idea about Ss setting up stations and rituals instead of me. I always felt like I was so much time getting materials ready. Also, the phone can be another one. #learnLAP
A3 our feedback is a something that is very important but some peer feedback with follow up questions could be a great opportunity for all kids, taking role and preparing work for absent students could also help give students opportunity #Learnlap
A2: because I am running a college class, it is very much about procedures. Ss have responsibilities for collecting and distribution of materials, evaluating other work on projects, creating meaningful evaluation tools and feedback; often even designing lessons. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP
A3.
It's a hard thing to give up... control! I allow ss to answer the phone & greet guests at a minimum. Anything I can do, I can help a s learn to do and sometimes do better than me! I have so many plates spinning, for them, it's just the right plate & they rock it!
QUESTION 3: It can be hard to give up control in the classroom, but children need opportunities to practice & fail in order to learn! What tasks do you currently do that you know could be done by your students? How might you hand these responsibilities over to them? #LearnLAP
A3: The biggest one that comes to mind is some of my ss IEP goal data collection. Older ss could with the right training keep track of their own progress. I feel this would benefit them immensely. I would hand it over gradually and would always monitor for accuracy.
#LearnLAP
A3: I teach online, so I don't need sts to perform most classroom tasks. But I could use a time keeper. I tend to go over, and I always have at least one student remind me how much time I have left #LearnLAP
A3: Gradual release of tracking math/reading progress. When Ss track their own growth, there is ownership, goal-setting opps, and excitement. Be transparent with Ss...they know their strengths/areas of growth. Stop. Collaborate. And listen! #LearnLAP
A3: Ss could probably develop more of the ideas of the actual activities in the classroom (But then, would we even have ANYTHING to do as Ts? lol #kidding). A great post we have about the Ts role in the classroom https://t.co/zr1wz12ZX2#learnlap
A3: Kids can actually do all the tasks I do. Next year I will teach a blended honors religions class where the learners will do teaching events in passion areas. Ss will develop targets, create ?s, lead discussions and even assess the work. It will be a blast! #learnLAP
A3: As a high school teacher I had plenty of opportunity to get help from students! Especially if they had to run errands! They loved to pass out papers, #Learnlap erase the boards, put up decorations, etc.
QUESTION 4: Sometimes, one student gets overly excited about all of the responsibilities that need to be done in a classroom & tries to do them all! Why should collaborative classrooms avoid allowing individual students to take on too many responsibilities? #LearnLAP
The sooner kids can learn how to give appropriate, constructive feedback, the better.
It's a skill that a lot of adults don't have that is critical for the workplace. #LearnLAP
Yes, I stole the idea from @MathWithMsHawes but when I need a paper to go somewhere fast, I shout out "Who wants to go on an adventure?!" Students love to help! #learnlap
Thank you! I can't take the credit. It was purchased on TPT. But our kindness crew helps with nurse (walks them or gets bandaids when needed), does classroom shoutouts, and are class greeters. Our school has tickets for PBIS incentives - so they help with those too. #LearnLAP
A4 All Ss should be given chance to lead the classroom rather than have a few dictators who control the class jobs. Ss are very observant and will see the same Ss vie for leadership roles which can cause others to avoid being a leader. #LearnLAP
As you finish reading "Learn Like a PIRATE," I hope you'll add your name to the #LearnLAP PLN where you can connect with other educators at your grade level or in your position! A great way to collaborate globally! :)

A3: As a high school teacher I had plenty of opportunity to get help from students! Especially if they had to run errands! They loved to pass out papers, #Learnlap erase the boards, put up decorations, etc.
A4: I believe all students should be given a chance to have a responsibility in the classroom. I was and am one of those individuals who like to help others, and when my professor would put out name tags, I would always pick them up and give them to her. #learnlap
they need to learn to work together. I assign the tasks & others keep the assigned student on top of it. If the student is absent they know the expected rotation
#learnlap
QUESTION 4: Sometimes, one student gets overly excited about all of the responsibilities that need to be done in a classroom & tries to do them all! Why should collaborative classrooms avoid allowing individual students to take on too many responsibilities? #LearnLAP
A4 Moderation is also a life skill kids need to learn. I always find those high flyer kids some individual important tasks to do so they don’t take over everything. #LearnLAP
A4: In a collaborative classroom, all sts are responsible for the classroom duties. This would hopefully ensure that all sts step up to do their part. #LearnLAP
A4: When students do the jobs, they aren't just helping you, they are learning essential people skills. If only one S does it then only they get to learn those skills. Plus, they may develop a superiority complex instead of a helper complex! #learnlap
A4: Students all need a chance to be given responsibilities, and develop the necessary skills. There will always be those students who can be good at the skills needed for a job, but it's crucial to allow others chance to flourish and develop new skills #LearnLAP
So glad I went back to reread this! The #LearnLAP chat went so fast, I missed it the first time! Ts at my campus will be working on this w/Ss this year. Any tips or advice? #JRErocks#JREchat
A4. In a collaborative classroom, we need to teach our Ss to share and take turns in order to work together to get the jobs done. It's beneficial that eveyone knows how to do every task and can help one another! #learnlap
A4: It’s never too early for Ss to learn that each one of them have a strength. One day, they’ll be on a team (athletic, academic, or work) and will have to collaborate together. #learnlap
QUESTION 4: Sometimes, one student gets overly excited about all of the responsibilities that need to be done in a classroom & tries to do them all! Why should collaborative classrooms avoid allowing individual students to take on too many responsibilities? #LearnLAP
Q4 - Students should identify what needs to happen and be willing and able to get the task done. All should feel the responsibility. Having a few students do too much enables others to take on more passive roles, missing opportunity for responsibility and leadership. #Learnlap
QUESTION 4: Sometimes, one student gets overly excited about all of the responsibilities that need to be done in a classroom & tries to do them all! Why should collaborative classrooms avoid allowing individual students to take on too many responsibilities? #LearnLAP
I think you answered the "how" in solving an eager beaver in the classroom but thiswas one of my questions as to why kids seem to want to do everything. Mine usually wanted to get out of homework! #learnLAP
A4: If one student tries to do too much he/she basically becomes the "teacher!"For it to be a collaborative classroom all Ss need to be a part! #learnlap
A4: Just like Ts, one that does too much begins to be frowned upon by others. As well, other Ss need to learn to work together because the classroom thrives off of collaborative and innovative ways and ideas. Not one person can do everything the same way a team could. #LearnLAP
A3: I teach of GOVT class of future Ts. Most will not be SS teachers but they still have to be able to teach even if not their favorite subj. They design the lessons, assessments, and selecting tools. Could crash and burn, but they have to learn. I provide objectives. #LearnLAP
A4: There are so many reasons to discuss here. I will say that when one person does too much the others don’t learn. Collaboration is the stuff of growth for ALL! #learnLAP
QUESTION 4: Sometimes, one student gets overly excited about all of the responsibilities that need to be done in a classroom & tries to do them all! Why should collaborative classrooms avoid allowing individual students to take on too many responsibilities? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 4: Sometimes, one student gets overly excited about all of the responsibilities that need to be done in a classroom & tries to do them all! Why should collaborative classrooms avoid allowing individual students to take on too many responsibilities? #LearnLAP
A4: Because no matter what system you have in place, there will always be "that kid in the back" who tries to slither through the cracks without doing a thing lol #learnlap
QUESTION 5: What ritualistic activities can your students handle successfully in your classroom without your assistance (procedural or academic)? Would any of these rituals make good activities to plan for a substitute? Why or why not? #LearnLAP
A4: Students have to learn to work together, and that it is good to share responsibilities. We want them to see that teamwork is important in life. Doing everything yourself seems efficient, but it isn't. #learnlap
A5: The basic routine of getting started in the classroom is universal. My students have name tags they grab (help me do attendance quickly) and they put them with the listed activity they will be working on. Keeps everyone accountable and can be done with anyone #learnlap
A4: Its not collaborative if one person is doing everything. Its important that ss work together as a team to get things done. It allows everyone to feel valued, prevents anyone from being stressed, and creates a more positive environment. #learnlap
QUESTION 4: Sometimes, one student gets overly excited about all of the responsibilities that need to be done in a classroom & tries to do them all! Why should collaborative classrooms avoid allowing individual students to take on too many responsibilities? #LearnLAP
I embed my lessons in onenote class notebook and then we use the same tabs sequence as our framework each day. When I have to be off campus at a meeting my kids do run the entire class.
#learnlap
QUESTION 5: What ritualistic activities can your students handle successfully in your classroom without your assistance (procedural or academic)? Would any of these rituals make good activities to plan for a substitute? Why or why not? #LearnLAP
A5: I feel like my Ss will be able to handle the procedural aspects of the classroom. I plan on incorporating a brain break, and once the Ss know the routine, it makes it easier for them to understand what is coming next and keep the flow going. #learnlap
A5: Students can lead the warm-up review, draw names to answer questions, get out/put up books and materials, write the homework on the board... #learnlap
A5 Our whole morning routine can be directed by the students. Great to have the confidence that they can get the day started (actually most of the day) even if I weren't there. Between routines and flipped learning/ subs don't need to do a whole lot :) #LearnLAP
A5: I enjoyed Ss running my morning meeting. It was an integral part that students learn to respect each other all the time and not just when I run the meeting. As well, it prompted Ss to give ideas on topics to discuss. #LearnLAP
A5 The goal is to have our classrooms go as smooth as possible when we are out. We must create a class culture of trust and respect. Allow our Ss to help substitutes keep learning going as if we were there!#LearnLAP
A5. Ss come in sit down, eat their snacks, clean up, and then get ready for circle time where we gather and do a sharing discussion period before we get started on experiments/activities. #learnlap
A5 The first 5 minutes (Bell ringer and class “opening” (share successes, concerns, etc.)), transitions, and last 5 mins of class (exit slip / review) can be rituals that make the class run smoothly. Would make it easy for a sub to let Ss run the class while supervising #LearnLAP
A5: My online virtual classroom doesn't really have regular ways to have rituals, but I'll have to think of something because it sounds like a good idea #LearnLAP
A5: Here are most of the rituals & routines that we've had in place over the past few years: https://t.co/j0EUSfCemn In our room, rituals are generally fun or motivating & kids WANT to do them. Routines are often repetitive & monotonous & kids need reminders to do them. #LearnLAP
A5: I'd like to have students lead discussions over our warm ups. I think it would be really positive to have them facilitate these conversations. And it would be helpful for the days I am out. #learnlap
A5: Ss are mostly in my room for testing in small groups. They pass out computers and space themselves for testing without being told. They can also complete word study and vocab activities. #learnlap
QUESTION 5: What ritualistic activities can your students handle successfully in your classroom without your assistance (procedural or academic)? Would any of these rituals make good activities to plan for a substitute? Why or why not? #LearnLAP
A5: My students can handle their online adaptive digital learning platforms on their own. I give them tracking/expectation sheets to go along with them. They can handle their leadership roles even when there is a substitute, and morning/packup routines #LearnLAP
A5: Ss know how to enter the room and get set up for rehearsal, but I need to work on more rituals they can do without me. A challege for band/orchestra, but not impossible! 🎶 #learnlap
A5: There were certain procedures that we followed from day 1 in the classroom and throughout the year. They became 2nd nature. When a sub was there students knew what was expected and didn’t need much prompting. Agenda, bell ringer, notebook procedures, etc. 👍🏻 #Learnlap
A4:Overly excited Ss can shut down those that may be less confident. It's important to recognize those who help but explain how they can also help by encouraging others to step up too #learnlap
A6 ss would need to know the expectations and the routine. However, ss learn with discussion especial ss with dyslexia so communication and collaboration is a must in any classroom! #learnlap
QUESTION 6: At the end of every year my students earn a “Silent Day” where they run the classroom without any interference from me! What preparation would need to happen so your students could successfully run a "Silent Day?" What responsibilities will they need to own? #LearnLAP
A6: Leadership. Each student needs to know their strengths and how to implement. They’d need to be able to apply critical thinking skills and to collaborate effectively. #LEARNLAP
QUESTION 6: At the end of every year my students earn a “Silent Day” where they run the classroom without any interference from me! What preparation would need to happen so your students could successfully run a "Silent Day?" What responsibilities will they need to own? #LearnLAP
My students are taught all year to run the class, so I would just have to have it on a presentation day or have the students create content lessons for each other, since that's the only part I do now--they do the rest
#learnlap
QUESTION 6: At the end of every year my students earn a “Silent Day” where they run the classroom without any interference from me! What preparation would need to happen so your students could successfully run a "Silent Day?" What responsibilities will they need to own? #LearnLAP
A6: My Ss would have to be able to be responsible in my classroom and show me that they can handle a "Silent Day". I love the idea of having students run the classroom, but I believe trust has to be the core foundation. #learnlap
A6: It would need prep the entire school year to make it so that is "cool", but also flawless. Without prepping a little bit at a time, that could turn into a disaster quickly #learnlap
A6: Clear expectations and some practice, perhaps in the form of "Silent 15 minutes" to help students figure out how the class operates when we take a huge step back. #learnlap
My plan is to create simple data tracking forms with an abbreviated goal and # of successful trials needed to master the goal. Ss will record the date and # or % correct. I am going to do notecard size and keep them on a ring. #learnlap
A6: Responsiblilty, leadership, getting along. That would need some actionable feedback from me and working with them consistently throughout the year. Nervewracking to think about but definitely a great idea. #LearnLAP
I also want to incorporate more that they would be able to do without me. I like your spirit..."a challenge, but not impossible" and will think that way for my firsties as well! #LearnLAP
A6: They will own all of the responsibilities that makes the classroom run. They will also need a facilitator to ensure that the day is running smoothly and different students w/ pre-planned activities to teach the class. Students can design these activities in advance. #learnlap
A6: A silent day sounds great! This is something that I would love to try. Ss would need to have developed leadership skills, built relationships and have shared visions. #LearnLAP
In my building, there has to be a conflict resolver in my room along with a procedure that theyknew without looking to me. There would have to be discussions throughout the year about expectations even on silent day or a sub day. #learnLAP
Q6 - I could see a “Silent Day” being more likely at the end of the year. Students need to know rituals and procedures inside and out, and have had plenty of leadership opportunities throughout the year. I would need to do a better job of posting schedule WITH times… #LearnLAP
QUESTION 6: At the end of every year my students earn a “Silent Day” where they run the classroom without any interference from me! What preparation would need to happen so your students could successfully run a "Silent Day?" What responsibilities will they need to own? #LearnLAP
Sorry I’m jumping in late to the chat! A6: I loved this idea of a silent day. At the EOY I let my kinders run calendar and I love to sit on the rug and be a student during that time, but love the idea of extending it more! #LearnLAP
A4: The message in a collaborative classroom is Equity in Community. There are numerous tools to randomly assign leadership & tasks & guarantee equity in opportunities to lead. “Go getters” need to learn value of others and “wall flowers” must be given chances to shine #LearnLAP
A6. They would have to be aware of the project/experiment that we were working on in advance! This would be quite interesting, to see Ss decide upon one S for a leader or a group! #learnlap
A6: That sounds amazing @PaulSolarz! The class would have to come up with a vision for the day and the specific action steps needed to accomplish that vision to avoid chaos. 😂 #LearnLAP
A7 a couple of my ts did a unit that was ss ran. In their blended learning ss took over and lead the mini lesson. The other ss loved it and the ts loved it too! #learnlap
A6: My biggest hurdle would be that ss receive read aloud in my room. They would need to learn how to use a text to audio app or device. Ss would also need to learn to help keep each other focused, provide prompts of breaks & other IEP accommodations. #learnlap
QUESTION 6: At the end of every year my students earn a “Silent Day” where they run the classroom without any interference from me! What preparation would need to happen so your students could successfully run a "Silent Day?" What responsibilities will they need to own? #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP
A6. Hopefully, we have taught them SO well throughout the year, that we have minimal reminders of what a silent day could look like! My goal as a teacher was to always set my kiddos up in a way to help them carry on learning as If I were not in the room..
QUESTION 6: At the end of every year my students earn a “Silent Day” where they run the classroom without any interference from me! What preparation would need to happen so your students could successfully run a "Silent Day?" What responsibilities will they need to own? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 7: Do you incorporate mini-lessons into your instruction? They're great for quick blasts of info. or whole-class feedback! What role do they play in your instruction & how can you encourage your students to present mini-lessons to the class when appropriate? #LearnLAP
I haven't had a Silent Day per se, but I have had students teach class. I called them Professor for the Day. The class responded enthusiastically, and I was there to add leading questions or guide them in the correct direction if needed. It was fun. #learnlap
A7: I have a board up for "mini lessons". If a student is really struggling with a concept, they pop their name up on the board and anyone who is silently with them (until then, anyway) can have a sit down with me so we can go over the material intimately #learnlap
QUESTION 7: Do you incorporate mini-lessons into your instruction? They're great for quick blasts of info. or whole-class feedback! What role do they play in your instruction & how can you encourage your students to present mini-lessons to the class when appropriate? #LearnLAP
Nice idea! I like the idea of starting small i.e. "Silent 15 minutes." Gives them more of an opportunity to prove themselves and they'll have more confidence and readiness when it's go-time. #LearnLAP
#LearnLAP
A5. We became so well oiled during the school year, that ss could basically run through centers in math and reading with minimal support from me. Morning routines, clean up routines, packing up routines, math journal time.
QUESTION 5: What ritualistic activities can your students handle successfully in your classroom without your assistance (procedural or academic)? Would any of these rituals make good activities to plan for a substitute? Why or why not? #LearnLAP
A6 A Silent Day would run smoothly only if Ss have clear rituals in place, expectations have been met all trimester, and be best on a quiz/test day. They need to understand I won’t talk or redirect at all unless it’s emergency. #LearnLAP
A7 I do mini-lessons if I see Ss have not understood the content after a redirection, time to practice w/ content and time for reflection on where they are at. I think they would also be beneficial after assessment to further improve toward mastery. #LearnLAP
A7: I attended an edcamp for the first time at @educationISU last Spring. It was amazing, and I would love to design mini lessons similar to that where Ss could pick a topic that interests them throughout the day. I am not sure how that would look like yet. #learnlap
A7 I think mini-lessons are powerful. Attention spans are short so we need to take advantage of these quick lessons to teach important concepts. We can assess and then personalize as needed. #LearnLAP
A7: Mini-lessons are important to gauge student understanding. If I were to have Ss teach them, I may have that be a small group item that the Ss could lead during independent work or small group time. #LearnLAP
A7: Mini Lessons are awesome opportunities for students to shine. If I see that the class is struggling on a concept that a student is shining in or has an interesting take on, I might ask them to present to the class in an informal way. #learnlap
A7: I use mini-lessons daily, planned or not. There are so many "teachable moments" that occur throughout the day where mini-lessons are needed and this is why flexibility is so important in teaching. I also use the Workshop teaching model which uses mini-lessons #LearnLAP
My college students LOVE that I use @RemindHQ! I preach it everywhere I go and get to talk to educators. Simply the best tool for Ss and educators around.
This is one area where I think my students last year excelled in. I give "Math Tasks" as a mini lesson - story problem based on what we're learning. Some students throughout the year understood better and wanted to teach the content instead of me! I videotaped it too! #learnLAP
A7: I frequently use mini-lessons when there is a specific skill or concept the entire class needs to learn. During band/orchestra rehearsals Ss will often teach mini-lessons or lead warm-ups at the beginning of class 🎶 #learnlap
A7: I do lots of mini lessons in my small groups. Since I rotate between classes/grade levels that's all I usually have time to do. Ss could present on an area of strength. This would be great for review before our SOL tests. #learnlap
QUESTION 7: Do you incorporate mini-lessons into your instruction? They're great for quick blasts of info. or whole-class feedback! What role do they play in your instruction & how can you encourage your students to present mini-lessons to the class when appropriate? #LearnLAP
I love this! Having students who are encouraged to say I need help is an amazing thing. I teach about growth mindset, and this is something that I think would work so well along with that. #LearnLAP
They did. Two of them came back when they were upperclassmen and asked me to allow them to teach for a bit during class. My freshmen were wide-eyed, and LOVED it. #learnlap
Q7 - I teach workshop-style: a mini lesson at the start (vs. #LearnLAP mid-period), independent and/or collaborative work time, and a lesson close/share. I love this format and my students know what to expect, but the idea of having them lead/teach scares me...how to implement!?
QUESTION 7: Do you incorporate mini-lessons into your instruction? They're great for quick blasts of info. or whole-class feedback! What role do they play in your instruction & how can you encourage your students to present mini-lessons to the class when appropriate? #LearnLAP
A7. Usually, I try to break our time down into two or three different activites for the day! So Ss, would have to do a variety of mini- lessons! For different activities, discussions of data/results from exp., conclusions. #learnlap
A7 - Here are some of the mini-lessons that my students taught throughout the year: https://t.co/0HaR664011 These were not mini lessons that I designed and asked them to teach. These were all inspired by students & offered by announcing "Give Me Five" during work time. #LearnLAP
Q5: I've considered letting students plan the sub day the day before I am out. #LearnLAP is inspiring me to take it a step further and let them plan with me, then run it with the sub!
QUESTION 5: What ritualistic activities can your students handle successfully in your classroom without your assistance (procedural or academic)? Would any of these rituals make good activities to plan for a substitute? Why or why not? #LearnLAP
QUESTION 8: Every day during REARJMCL we evaluate our behavior/effort as a class, set whole-class goals & monitor progress on old goals. Do you spend time discussing these issues with your students in a positive, improvement-focused way? What does it/might it look like? #LearnLAP
A7: I think it’s so important to teach my kindergarteners mini lessons and I am all about those teachable moments. I would love to expand them to have my Ss teach during small group #LearnLAP
A7: I probably had more “teachable moments” than planned mini lessons! However exit tickets are a great way to plan needed mini lessons for the following day! #learnlap
A8 I like to celebrate victories of production and success(I don’t like to make it about negativity) and make that very apparent from Day 1. I’ll poll the class occasionally on “What went well today and what could we improve on?” #LearnLAP
A8: I have my students fill out "goal cards" and list a prize they want if they achieve it (it can literally be anything within reason). On one of the last days of school, they come in to all their prizes waiting on the board if they accomplished their goal #learnlap
Being in middle school with 48 minute blocks and about 75 minutes of curriculum per day, we have to condense it down, but I do as an exit ticket most days
#LearnLAP this is where I'm still working on things
QUESTION 8: Every day during REARJMCL we evaluate our behavior/effort as a class, set whole-class goals & monitor progress on old goals. Do you spend time discussing these issues with your students in a positive, improvement-focused way? What does it/might it look like? #LearnLAP
Q8 - I do not usually discuss behavior etc in this way. I like the #LearnLAP idea of having a student lead this part of the day, and the class collectively setting and noting a goal for the next day. Gives them ownership and focus.
QUESTION 8: Every day during REARJMCL we evaluate our behavior/effort as a class, set whole-class goals & monitor progress on old goals. Do you spend time discussing these issues with your students in a positive, improvement-focused way? What does it/might it look like? #LearnLAP
I'm on the planning team for the first edcamp in my area, @ssvaedcamp. So excited! What an awesome idea to provide the same type of opportunity to ss! #learnlap
In reply to
@MsJachymiak, @educationISU, @ssvaedcamp
A8: Every Friday we spend time working on data analyzing what could be better and what went well. Then Ss develop new goals or explain why they will keep working on a current goal. #LearnLAP
Thank you all for such a fabulous chat tonight! See you all next time (make sure to check out our webpage...www.studentcenteredworld.com) Have a great night! #learnlap
A8: In high school we tend to discuss these things only when they are a problem. This year I am resolved to be proactive. We will be doing regular student target tracking, academic, collaborative AND interpersonal goal setting. #LearnLAP
QUESTION 8: Every day during REARJMCL we evaluate our behavior/effort as a class, set whole-class goals & monitor progress on old goals. Do you spend time discussing these issues with your students in a positive, improvement-focused way? What does it/might it look like? #LearnLAP
A8: with my kinders I have a goal sheet with K goals & every time we meet we discuss what goals they have met & they use a Bingo dabber to make it complete & discuss the goals we continue to work towards. Ever since reading your book I’ve been 🧠storming other ways too! #LearnLAP
Thanks so much to everyone who joined in on the #LearnLAP conversation tonight!
I hope you'll be back next week (7/30/18 at 7pm Central) for WEEK 5 of the "Learn Like a PIRATE" SUMMER BOOK STUDY as we'll be talking about Chapter 6: "Active Learning Strategies." See you then! :)
A8: I used to use Class Dojo and "reflection journals". At the end of each day, Ss opened the app and used their student account to review their day. They then wrote an entry that had to contain a reflection on their academic and behavior goals set the day (cont.) #LearnLAP
A1: When students are empowered with responsibilities within the classroom, students feel invested in the actual learning environment and are willing to participate and accept the expectations of the culture the teacher and students want to establish #LearnLAP
