Chad Maxa here from Intermediate District 287. I have worked in education since 99. I am not a teacher by trade, but am an experienced learner :) #mnlead
Awesome to have you hear, Arthur. I was thinking of you when having to hold in the secret about @UMNmarch playing at the Super Bowl. Our son said it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! #mnlead

Q1 In the Introduction @mrtomrad shares his Rules of Teaching: School Is Unfair, School Is Unimportant, and Compassion Before All Else. What do you think about those 3 rules? Agree, disagree? Why? #MNLead
I spent a few years slightly specialized in 4th. It's been fun to change it up a bit and I'm not sure there is a perfect format (at least not that I've seen). Other than whatever works best for kids!
OK, here we go!
Q1 In the Introduction @mrtomrad shares his Rules of Teaching: School Is Unfair, School Is Unimportant, and Compassion Before All Else. What do you think about those 3 rules? Agree, disagree? Why? #MNLead
A1 School is…’compassion before all else.’ As educators, having compassion is essential. Compassion for our Ss, our colleagues, our families, and our community. It manifests itself in different ways, but compassion is key in our vocation. #mnlead
OK, here we go!
Q1 In the Introduction @mrtomrad shares his Rules of Teaching: School Is Unfair, School Is Unimportant, and Compassion Before All Else. What do you think about those 3 rules? Agree, disagree? Why? #MNLead
A1. When I ask Ts in a training what is the most positive educational experience they have ha and what made it so, the answer is never about school content - always relationships or T who cared. #mnlead
A1 #mnlead Education is an extremely difficult, and tricky thing. Students are coming in with so many things on their mind. Teachers are coming from different places… but when a teacher shows compassion, doors start open for everybody.
A1: I think the way “traditional” school is done Ss see as unimportant. I think many of the things we emphasize are unimportant… completely agree w #compassion statement! #mnlead
1. School is unfair, true, B. School is unimportant (partially false) it depends on what you do with it: school is sometimes all kids have. compassion before all else for sure. #MNLead
A1 This is such an interesting question… I think the compassion rule certainly should speak to all teachers, but rules 1 & 2 I think speak to the view of some/many students… If UR a teacher who is #3, you can change 1 & 2 #mnlead
A1. Every children is different and every situation is different, sometimes school may not seem fair. I think school is very important because it's the equalizer. Compassion is key to understanding what children live every day. #mnlead
A1.2 School is “unfair” is true as well. Life is also unfair and school is real life. There are many parts of our educational system that can be unfair. Diving into this one requires more than 240 characters! #mnlead
A1. School Is Unfair, Unimportant, and Compassion Before All Else. Yes, it's definitely unfair. No, it's not unimportant, and compassion is situational. Needs to have a balance. #mnlead
I struggle w the idea that school is an equalizer when where you live plays such a big role in the quality of education you have access to. Explain more? #mnlead

As much as we want to think we’re filling their heads with invaluable content that they’ll carry with them forever, is out true connections we make with them they’ll carry with. #mnlead
@TimElmore mentioned this during our @EdgyEdu podcast. “Teachers are my heroes, but I feel that the current educational system is broken” his book “Marching Off the Map” is amazing. #mnlead
It's been an incredibly difficult last 3 weeks for me, with the flu, bronchitis, #historyday and more… but the biggest thing that's carried me on is the relationships I've built with students, and families. It's essential. A1 #mnlead cont.
A1) My high school experience was not the best, but my high school biology teacher was compassionate and motivated me, even in a content area I wasn't interested in at the time #relationships#mnlead
Just a reminder, I am not a big fan of chats where everyone just answers the questions and doesn't interact with others, so make sure to read others' responses and INTERACT! Ask questions, etc. I can't do it all by myself! :) #MNLead
A1.2:
1. Champion every student as if they were your own child.
2. Listen more than you speak.
2. Every student will hit their stride, you just don't know when. #mnlead
Hi all. I'd like to jump in tonight! I love @MrTomRad & his book, so I'll be joining you if that's okay. Deb Minyard, HS Band Director, New Mexico #MNLead
A1. School is unfair - I think as we move towards truly personalized learning this will change. But until that happens and we move beyond the traditional way of doing things, there are a great number of Ss who are going to continue to struggle in classrooms. #MNLead
Quality and resources make a big difference, Ed is supposed to equalize and, if one has access to public libraries or strong schools, it can. Often there are barriers to equality. #mnlead
I would like to suggest that everyone takes these 3 Rules of theirs and post them in your classroom somewhere. Share them with co-workers, get conversations about what they think their 3 rules are. #MNLead
A1, Part 2: I always tell my students to be kind, do their best, and have fun so I guess those would be my three rules...and random dancing...there MUST be random dancing! 😂 #MNLead
A1.2 1. Remember the big picture, school is about helping kids become good adults
B. Be a people first (via Doug Robertson)
$. None of us needs to be alone #mnlead
A1.1) A - Kids & adults do well when they can B - We are better as a team C - Start with the end in mind, knowingly may be different for everyone #mnlead

A1. While the quality from school to school varies and children in poverty at times do not get as many opportunities as others, I still belive that education allows for some children to dream and move up the socio economic ladder. #mnlead

#MNLead I find stories like this inspiring. Thanks for sharing, Chad. As an educator, I hope to facilitate this kind of experience for students who might not always enjoy English Language Arts.

A1 Part 2 #mnlead
Create engaging educational opportunities,
Reflection, Relationships... Not necessarily in that order.
Each one of those pieces has been critical 2 my growth as an educator.
If I was to put a 4th & 5th rule in there, it would be 2b vulnerable & take chances.
👍🏻Good friend of mine @mrbadura told me, “Its not that you didn’t like the subject. You didn’t like how it was being delivered”. Give Craig a follow. He is one of the best. #mnlead
A1.2? 1)Be caring/compassionate 2)Fair is not the same for everyone, it’s what each student needs to be successful/competitive 3)Listen/Be Present 4)Laugh often and don’t take yourself too seriously (I know it’s 4, but I don’t teach math… ;-) ) #mnlead
A1.2 #MNLead
1. Know, teach, and believe in the students who are in your classroom, not the ones you want to have.
2. Be ready to be an advocate. Your students depend on it.
3. Model what you teach. Your actions speak louder than words.
*IF* you have access is a pretty big qualifier for the statement. Our schools are so segregated, by race and by class, I don’t think we’re doing the job we could be. Very sad. Maybe that’s the unfair part? #mnlead

Q2 The book is divided into 4 parts, one for each season and what that season is like for a teacher. We’ll visit Winter first. What keeps you going at school during these grey dark months? And I’d love to know if Ts down south feel the winter blues as much as us up north. #MNLead
Building a positive classroom culture is by far more bang for your buck. Get to know the Ss and for Ss to get to know you as the T. However, you can always do curriculum and tie into relationship building. #MNLead
I would assert that poverty plays a bigger role that “at times.” I’m not saying education isn’t an answer for some, I’m saying it’s far from equal opportunity. #mnlead
Amazing. I never get tired of those stories. Mine was a 7th grade S.S. teacher that wrote on a paper, "you should be a writer!" I had no idea it was something people could BE. #mnlead
A1) My high school experience was not the best, but my high school biology teacher was compassionate and motivated me, even in a content area I wasn't interested in at the time #relationships#mnlead
Definitely, Dan. Masterful teachers can do this, and I've always felt that the teaching profession is up there with the medical profession due to its complexity and the time it takes to master the art. #mnlead
#MNLead I find stories like this inspiring. Thanks for sharing, Chad. As an educator, I hope to facilitate this kind of experience for students who might not always enjoy English Language Arts.
And be honest with students when things don't wrk. Let them know you are willing to take a chance. Ask them what they liked, what worked, what could be improved. #mnlead
In my role, since I’m not in a classroom, I plan prof. learning opportunities that *I* am excited about because I think that enthusiasm goes a long way when I’m leading. Right now working on a “teaching civil discourse” workshop that I spent my whole weekend building! #mnlead
A2 Realize there is something good everyday. I start by being grateful for the few more minutes of sunlight we get each day in February. Then, make sure to get some exercise and prioritize a good night’s sleep. And good caffeine. That’s important too! ;) #mnlead

It's hard to be out of the classroom for extended periods of time. From my own experiences this fall, I too realized the benefits of strong relationships w/ Ss & families in making it easier #MNLead
A2. Students keep me laughing, A LOT, which helps. It's been 30 degrees above normal this winter in NM, so the kids are getting very restless. It feels like spring for everybody. #MNLead

Q2 Honestly, lots of caffeine 😅 but my principal sat me down and gave me permission to relax and have fun with my kiddos- that’s what’s getting me through. So thankful for this chat because he helped me see that they need to see that fun side! #MNLead
A:2 I’m not your typical T. I love school too much to get the blues. The best work is putting in long hours when all of my colleagues are home. I get more accomplish: revise the day’s lessons, make phones home giving positive messages to families and develop new learning. #MNLead

I was at school the 1st day of the 2nd semester albeit, sitting in a rocking chair. Students were bringing me a blanket, water, telling other Ss to quiet down because I didn't feel well. Although I felt like death warmed over, it felt good that they cared. #mnlead
A2) I coach basketball, and that keeps me from going crazy. I listen to Eric Thomas (@Ericthomasbtc) and keep myself inspired to do better each and every day. #mnlead
In your first year of teaching, work every day to find out the story behind each of your students and when you find those that have the most obstacles to overcome, make it your calling to help them realize what can be. #mnlead
A2) I try to let the Ts and staff know how much they are appreciated and try to get into the classrooms as much as possible. We are all in this together! #mnlead

A2: Work out when I can & any day that I don’t hit at least 4-5 miles on campus is too much of an office day! I prefer to be out & about on campus as much as possible...my mobile desk helps with that! And yes...southern teachers get the winter blues! But I’m a northerner! #mnlead
I think this is good advice for every year of teaching…or leading schools. Everyone has something to bring to the table and it is our job to help them do that. #mnlead
In your first year of teaching, work every day to find out the story behind each of your students and when you find those that have the most obstacles to overcome, make it your calling to help them realize what can be. #mnlead
OK, as usual this hour is flying by! I am going to Q3 in TWO MINUTES! You are all doing awesome! Keep the conversations going and I'll try to keep up as best I can! #MNLead
A2: This may be my answer for all seasons but attitude choice matters. No matter how dark and dreary life gets, I am blessed beyond measure. Choose JOY! #mnlead
A2 #mnlead. February is tough... which @MrTomRad mentions in his latest blog (Yes, I know we are championing the book right now, but whatevs!
https://t.co/nkLvrHcm02
Find colleagues who will be there for you. and be there for them.
I started deleting people on Facebook and decided I should be more proactive about helping people have better conversations vs just deleting them! #mnlead
They love that human side of you, and because you've opened up to them, they will be more willing to to the tough things you ask them to do! :) #mnlead
A2 It is definitely a season of self care. Workouts, drink water, enjoy the zen "moment" of a sip of hot tea or coffee. And kids LOVE snow....so as messy as it gets...it's fun to watch them just be kids! #mnlead
Schools are just places, while sometimes places are important for nostalgic reasons, it’s the people that matter, if you’re a teacher and you don’t matter to kids, you have a problem #mnlead
A small token of appreciation for my fellow teachers. I'd have purchased more... but I don't know the terms of our tentative contact yet. 🤔😉😆
#loveteaching
Q3 Spring comes next. I love this quote, “Don’t avoid the places where you struggle; lean into the impossible things about teaching.” What are those impossible things about teaching for you? How are you not avoiding them? What are you doing to lean in? #MNLead
@PrincipalArthur how do you break the mindset of Ts who feel they are under the microscope even tough you’re just checking how your Ss are learning and not focusing on the T? #MNLead

I agree it can be tough. But since we know it is tough, we can anticipate and help others by being proactive and positive.
Plus, February only usually has 28 day, so we have that going for us! #mnlead

The hardest thing I used to fight in the classroom was letting that rhythm carry me away. Sometimes you get in a flow but you become bland/stagnant. Reflection is so important during winter to remind yourself of where you are and where you want to go #mnlead
Agreed and while you're bringing up an excellent point, do we expect students to conform to the place or do we make the place/system conform to the person? #mnlead
A2 Gotta get up and get going, my kids are counting on me being there… There’s learning and fun to be had… Fist bumps to bump, high 5’s to… 5(?) LOL Ice Fishing/trapping/snowmobiling tales to share #mnlead
Q3 Spring comes next. I love this quote, “Don’t avoid the places where you struggle; lean into the impossible things about teaching.” What are those impossible things about teaching for you? How are you not avoiding them? What are you doing to lean in? #MNLead
Ding ding ding! Reflection is a key practice that helps us become our best selves. We need to really build this into our personal and professional practice. For the purpose of continuous improvement…and sanity! #mnlead

My impossible this year is all around my boys. 8th grade boys that are still reaching for their power in the world and where they fit, and how to help them do those in a positive way. #mnlead

A2) In SpEd land winter is testing doldrums, drowning in due process paperwork. I make time to SEE students as more than test scores, needs, qualifying fo services, etc. #mnlead
Q3 micro managing!!! I have really high standards for myself, slight OCD and a perfectionist side. It’s been HARD to let go of that. However with 1st graders, I’ve learned how important that is. They have more opportunities to learn from their mistakes #MNLead
I think we are meeting in the middle of its successful. Sometimes you have to go further with kids to engage them in the process though. It shouldn’t be 100% in either direction #mnlead
A3. Opening my classroom to other teachers & exposing the weaknesses in my own practice are things I struggle with. But I become SO much better when I do open the door & seek feedback. It's not weakness. Even though I struggle with it. My kids are better off for it. #MNLead

Agreed. B aware of your colleagues. They are stressing too. It's amazing how much a little note left on the door from a colleague can spark you.
I made sure 2 tell my admin about 2 amazing colleagues who went above & beyond these past 2 weeks. #mnlead THANK YOU @missmakerspace

2. Go ice fishing! In NaturePreK winter is one of my favorite seasons. Although with a full day preschool program, and extra cold temperatures limiting our time outside, it has been extra tough... relationships w/ students keeps me going. Every student matters! #mnlead
A3: Those impossible things for me are knowing I can’t fix it all. That’s rough. It’s tough knowing there are 10000000 things going on outside our walls that I can’t always fix. But you do what you can #mnlead
A2. 8 Years of my education career were in Austin, TX. I don't recall having such a hard time in the Winter. I do recall that everybody, just like here, liked breaks in the school year. This is for another day but I think 45-15 is a great school calendar. #mnlead
A3: I don't want anyone to look at teaching/learning as a 9 month journey to be repeated with a beginning and and end. Wake up every day to be a better version of you so that you can help create a better experience for those you come in contact with...Ss and adults. #mnlead
Agreed. And while I was picking at it, I wonder what the underlying philosophy is. Is it to get the students to conform to the system? Ebbing and flowing until that happens? #mnlead
As usual, you are on top of it @MarkJWestpfahl. Finding what others are doing right and telling them that is core to being a good colleague. Not hollow praise, but specific positive feedback. It’s the secret sauce of great school culture. #mnlead

I make it a point to try to stop in each classroom everyday. Over the years, the Ts have become comfortable with me stopping in the rooms. It is to the point now where Ts don't stop instruction when I walk in! #mnlead

I fear in my own practice that this means I did not positively impact their lives in ways I hoped. It may not be an accurate perception, but that is how it feels. #mnlead

A3) Knowing our legislative branch is in full session, and going to the forums, there's so little control I have outside of my classroom because decisions are being made based on politics, not what's best for kids. #mnlead
A3: As a GIP coach, I struggle to get a resident to reflect on his/her teaching and continue to challenge the Ss. I’m using the coaching models and continued support, yet there’s no sense of urgency. I <3 my other coaches who continue to push me to support this resident. #MNLead

I want kids to know how to use the system. I’m not getting rid of it, they’d better be able to figure out how to see the game, figure out how to get what they need, and retain themselves in the process. #mnlead
A3 I think I am just now (17 years in), becoming more OK with "not everything has to be serious". Ts worry about doing something that doesn't move the needle forward. Sometimes FUN does that better than anything. (and learning can happen at the same time) #mnlead
Some times though, don't you think your impact might take a few years to hit students? That long after they are gone, they realized what you did for them? #MNLead
A3) Some of our strongest teams, best plans, evolved throughout struggle! Building past misunderstandings and mistrust into relationships. Not easy, but worth it!!!#mnlead
It's nice to do it publicly, but I also think it goes a long way for notes like this to go anonymous I'm not as on top of it as I want to be. Part of my A3 for #MNLead is that I have not followed through on my start of the year goal enough. PRAISE MORE!
A3 Trying to fix everyone’s problems. I want our organization to keep moving forward toward realizing our vision and priorities. And to do so smoothly. Hint: Doesn’t always work that way. I am always working to keep the big picture in the forefront. #forgivethyself#mnlead
This #mnlead chat coincided with bedtime reading, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. My four year old just left the room screaming “Why does Harry keep getting letters???” I hope that helps answer all the questions I missed.
A2 Last year I read these two books aloud in the winter to change up our routine. Flying Lessons & Other Stories is now the book I use for our short story unit. #MNLead
A3) Some of our strongest teams, best plans, evolved throughout struggle! Building past misunderstandings and mistrust into relationships. Not easy, but worth it!!!#mnlead
That's fantastic. I've had whole years without a principal stepping inside my room. One year, admin tried to write up an observation based on what they had seen "walking past" .... yeah. #mnlead

@PrincipalArthur how do you break the mindset of Ts who feel they are under the microscope even tough you’re just checking how your Ss are learning and not focusing on the T? #MNLead
A2) I try to let the Ts and staff know how much they are appreciated and try to get into the classrooms as much as possible. We are all in this together! #mnlead
Q2 The book is divided into 4 parts, one for each season and what that season is like for a teacher. We’ll visit Winter first. What keeps you going at school during these grey dark months? And I’d love to know if Ts down south feel the winter blues as much as us up north. #MNLead
See? I tell people to invite people to their rooms, AND I LOVE having people in my room! All the time! Come and visit anytime you want! Really! #MNLead
This #mnlead chat coincided with bedtime reading, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. My four year old just left the room screaming “Why does Harry keep getting letters???” I hope that helps answer all the questions I missed.
A3 Great point! I need to learn when to not let so many things be the hill I want to die on. I can only control so much, but I need to admit my vulnerability and either ask for help to make it a reality or say no. I'm always afraid of that last one. #mnlead
A3 Trying to fix everyone’s problems. I want our organization to keep moving forward toward realizing our vision and priorities. And to do so smoothly. Hint: Doesn’t always work that way. I am always working to keep the big picture in the forefront. #forgivethyself#mnlead
I like to think so, but you don't often see it that late. I teach band, so I have them for four years, which is why when the relationship ends, it feels like a massive loss. You'd think after 20 years I'd be used to this... #mnlead
A3 Spring is the time to ramp the energy back up, the finish line is in sight… But now with April being the “Month of MCA’s”, keeping the Ss engaged in non-MCA work takes energy, good humor and giving the kids more choice and the learning needs to be Relevant. #mnlead

#MNLead I agree, it is extremely important to build relationships with students prior because student motivation will lead to increase of engagement within the classroom which will then promote success in learning and retention of content knowledge in education.

I love having people in my room. I think it is great for others to see what we are doing and for my students to see that there are people outside of our four walls that care what they are doing. I bring in a lot of guests, but I need to make it more of a priority. #mnlead
A3.1 And then MCA’s end in April and you need to finish strong in May… We do things like Innovation week, we’re Ts can do essentially anything they want to do, but learning is fun/engaging and relevant is kinda the goal #mnlead
A3 what’s impossible about teaching? You aren’t the hero in anyone else’s story. They are, your job is to try and help them get ready for whatever comes at them, you can’t fight their battles for them, sometimes the lose. #theteachersjourney#mnlead
When classroom visits are frequent enough, they stop being “observations” and start becoming connections. To the students, the teacher, the curriculum, and the culture. Principals should prioritize this because it is the gift that keeps on giving. #mnlead

A4 my kiddos this year have taught me so much about myself and my teaching. I don’t even know where to start. Your first year teaching is a whole new ball game and I am CONSTANTLY learning #MNLead
A3. Full day PreK is tough, especially when the program foundation needs work. I continue to focus on what I can control & advocate for change where it is needed. Never stop trying new things, networking with other programs to learn from their success #MNLead
I've just become a specialist 3 years ago, after being a regular classroom teacher. I am learning the power of having Ss over many years versus one. I truly love it. #MNLead
A4 I think it is vital for teachers to reflect and for teachers to keep a file w/emails, notes, etc. from their students, parents, etc. It's easy to dwell on what didn't go right - what we need to improve, but we often fail to see the difference we ARE making. #mnlead

A3: In the most successful schools, parents expect their children to get a good education. In the others they just hope. We need to, even if the societal problems seem overwhelming, provide quality educational experiences for all. #mnlead

Thanks! I would like to think we as teachers recognize that we can always learn something from our Ss. I have so many stories of what I learned from kindergartners! #MNLead
A4. I had a student I absolutely couldn't connect with, after 4 years of being in band. I learned that I needed to find him a safe place, another T, he could connect with someone & work through his issues. It taught me that I can't do it all, but I can be a resource. #mnlead

A4 cont. I stay in touch with players I coached nearly 20 years ago, students I have taught nearly 10 years ago. As @PrincipalFrench and so many more have said, it's about relationships. I still keep in contact w.many of my middle & hs teachers... because they cared. #mnlead
Yes! I'm glad Tom reminded me about #LoveTeaching It's pretty special to him. Be sure and check out the hashtag after the chat. And like he said, tag it in your answer for this! #MNLead

A4. Students are resiliant and the more that I build realitionships and get to know their stories, the more that I want to keep moving forward. Stories of homeless, immigration struggles, abuse and neglect. Many to tell. #mnlead
A4 I had an 8 y/o kid lose his grandfather(caregiver) to suicide it was the last in what seemed like a hundred traumas that year for my class. I realized what I meant to him when all he wanted was for me to sit near him, and stay there #mnlead
A4) I've got a file titled "Happy" where I keep my cards, notes, pictures drawn, silly things handed to me, all that stuff that just says, "You are doing the right thing, keep going." I review it at the end of every year, add to it, and file it for when I need it. #mnlead
A4 My first year of teaching I lamented to my Grandmother that some of my students were “thinking they were so cool.” She said “Matthew, this may be the only time in their life they feel that way. Let them have it." Beautiful advice. Let kids be who they need to be. #mnlead
A4: Ss are resilient. Be the T you are needed to be. Ss want rigor and flexibility. I’ve learned early on to make many mistakes and apologize when I’m wrong. Ss need to see the human in me. Model to Ss how to overcome my mistakes. I shared the book, Who Moved the Cheese. #MNLead

A4 Summer is the time to recharge and reflect on the year just past, not ended, because our year and connections with Ss never end… I think abt the Ss who had to really persevere to graduate. I think abt the S who is the 1st person EVER to graduate HS #mnlead
A4 Oh yes, and in summer, instead of simply relaxing on the beach, we come up w/ways to provide opportunities for students who may not otherwise have them. Shameless plug... and a CRY FOR HELP! We are still $,1300 short. #mnleadhttps://t.co/gbcr5jL97H
A4) Through social media, I have Ss I've coached or had in class from Alaska, Missouri, and now Iowa who've reached out. It's amazing what they've become, and that I played a tiny role in that. We do make a difference! #mnlead
A4: I struggled as a white dude from a nearly all-white suburb to understand the real impact of racism. Went to some great PD, but resisted. Then, my students shared their stories with me. In the course of a week or so of class, my entire life shifted. #mnlead#loveteaching
Even if you are not participating in #MNLead right now, you should be reading everyone's responses to Q4. They are amazing, inspiring and oh so awesome. #MNLead
A4: Met an AP at a training who asked if I remembered him. I did not. He told me that after I counseled him multiple times when I was his principal, led him to becoming a teacher. I am because of who you are. #mnlead
A4: I often reflect on how so many are critical of what they say schools don't do, but then I remember they don't get to know the personal stories of struggle I hear every day from students. I'm pretty sure those that write the articles have a warm bed and a full belly. #mnlead
A4 Summer -- I had a student who bought me a used vase at a garage sale with his only money (10 cents) because he was so grateful for me. Looking at him I saw how I have great power to create or destroy. #mnlead
A4. I am always learning from my Ss. This past week I learned how quickly adults can get wrapped up in views about a S due to his/her behavior that we miss opportunities to TEACH. By Friday, S was excited to go back to school after a week in my classroom. #MNLead
It really reminded me how important my job was, I wasn’t their instructor, I was the semi stable, reliable, rock standing my ground against the chaos that stormed around them. Again, not the hero, but a way to shelter from a world that can be too much at times #mnlead
Another reason why you need to read Tom's work, the way he shares about all he has learned and how he has grown when it comes to racism is what we all need to hear here in MN. #MNLead

A4: I have learned a lot from students. Summer can be good and bad for kids. Keep an eye out for those who may struggle venturing off from the safe environment you created with them all year. #mnlead
An "I'm sorry" on our part is one of the best teaching moments we can model. That humanity to say I screwed up and am sorry is huge for many Ss who where that isn't modeled that anywhere else! #mnlead
There are moments all the time when I reflect back on a moment from the classroom... Many times, I can't recall the name of the student, but I can still vividly remember what they said or did. Wonder if they feel the same about us years later. #mnlead

A4.1 I love getting wedding invitations, birth announcements, College graduation invitations… A text or an email out of the blue reminds me why I do what I do. Teaching/Coaching it takes you over 24/7/365 and in the summer you miss the kids too #mnlead
It certainly is! I coached an outstanding 8th grader last year, and she reached out when she started varsity. She hit a wall w/her game, so I was able to connect her with a former play who had the same experiences! So cool when we can do that! #mnlead
So true. Our jobs are actually easier to “Monday Morning Quarterback” than the NFL. And harder to actually do. Right now, it’s a simple response: we have a teacher shortage, I can help you find a University where you can get a license… #mnlead

Just give them a few minutes to talk, or not talk, as they decide. When I taught k-2 it was the way we started every day. I learned so much about the kids and they built empathy for each other #mnlead
Many, many staff at my school read it. Not only does it go straight to the heart, but it opened the door for us to have conversations about difficult topics that we wouldn't have discussed so openly otherwise. READ IT. #mnlead
