Welcome to today's #UTEdChat! I'm excited to be here discussing micro-credentials in education. I'd love to know who's here. Please introduce yourself. What's your name? Role in education?...and just for fun, what's your favorite part about spring?
Hello! Krystal from granite checking in. I’m an STS (school technology specialist). My favorite part about spring is when it ends and summer arrives 😂. I also enjoy the warmer temps, allergies, and sage testing #kidding#UTedChat
What's not to love about spring! Long walks, warm, but not hot weather, everything in bloom, the smell of freshly cut grass, more light, the NBA playoffs and March Madness, oh and I'm Dave. I teach. #utedchat
Welcome to today's #UTEdChat! I'm excited to be here discussing micro-credentials in education. I'd love to know who's here. Please introduce yourself. What's your name? Role in education?...and just for fun, what's your favorite part about spring?
Heather here...librarian at Skyridge High School in @alpineschools and my favorite thing about spring is tulips and daffodils...hopefully the snow didn't kill them off! #utedchat
Hello, Derek, #EdTech Dir from @sedck12 & @UCET Board Member chiming in. I've been sick all-day so I'm stoked I'm feeling better in time for #UTedChat! Spring is great because that's when snow usually DIES!
A1 I LOVE Twitter chats & Edcamps because they allow me very personalized learning opportunities. I can't ask for better experiences. But I also LOVE conferences like #UCET18 to meet up w/ my #UTedChat pals!
A1 - My most powerful experience was a literacy strategy training in which I got to select the strategies that interested me. This was powerful because it gave me choice and also time to figure out how to implement the strategy into my classroom. #UTEdChat
A1: hard to pick just one! I really loved the google summit that @EdTechGSD@GraniteSchools hosted 2 years ago. It was 2 days jam-packed with amazing google innovators who were incredibly inspiring! @edtechteam#UTEdChat
A1: attending my first #edcamput. Being able to crowdsource the topics of discussion and find people to share what they know. Learning together instead of being talked at. TRANSFORMATIVE #utedchat
A1: I did an NEH workshop last summer at the Henry Ford museum. You can read about the Industrial Revolution all you want, but going from riding in a Model T to seeing Ford F-150s coming off the assembly line? That makes it all real! #utedchat
A1 Being introduced to Twitter and Voxer. Loved these because it showed me that I didn’t have to come up with all the creative ideas. I could see what other people do and adapt, which I am quite good at. #UTedChat
A1: loved my summer with the Central Utah Writing Project. A month of writing six hours a day! Especially with @debbied1204& @crowechris at my disposal & bunch of amazing English teachers! Anything where I actually have time to work and get to talk to actual teachers! #utedchat

Brady Farr - ASD Partnership Facilitator/Instructional Coach - sorry I'm late to the fun - the water aerobics class at the Lehi Legacy Center got the best of me - I'm serious #utedchat
A1- The most high impact training that I have had has been tailored to my needs as a teacher and I was given specific instruction. I have been able to take what I learned and put it to use immediately in my classroom.
#UTedChat
A1 early on in career I attended Granite History Academy. It was an intense 5 week course. Learned what exceptional professional learning looked and felt like. No lecture, every method was demonstrated and shown. #UTedChat
A1 One of the best PD experiences I’ve had was a week long workshop on digital mapping. We experienced several real world activities that made the learning meaningful (and fun). #utedchat
I've considered coming to a Google Summit, but haven't found one that worked with my schedule. I'm a Levels 1 & 2 Edu but want to get my Trainer cert soon. #UTedChat

A1: A professional learning session on brain research and why collaboration is so essential for effective learning. It was powerful because not only were strategies taught but we practiced using them. #UTedChat
A1 - My favorite PD was a online course in data cleaning & analysis that was very challenging. I had to really step up my game, but the course provided models and guides I could build from. #utedchat
Yes! I love Edcamps! I also love conferences, but I always try to take some time to chat in the halls. Some of my best learning comes outside of sessions, but I love the sessions too! #UTedChat
#utedchat Not a professional development thing but Hope @HopeStreetGroup has been the best thing I've done relative to professional development and growth. Surrounding yourself with great educators is motivational!
A1: Also @driven2teach, going to historical sites with other history teachers and discussing best practices to use in the classroom? OMG, BEST THING EVER. #utedchat
Utah Writing Project is another of my best PD experiences for sure. I loved the pace and the focus-
we got to spend time with our work instead of rushing through things! #utedchat

A1 - Almost every Friday we have PF/IC meetings at the district - some really motivating/enriching/applicable trainings over the last couple of years - hard to name just one #utedchat
A1: attending my first #edcamput. Being able to crowdsource the topics of discussion and find people to share what they know. Learning together instead of being talked at. TRANSFORMATIVE #utedchat
If you spend 100% of your time at a conference in sessions then you're doing it wrong. I agree that some of my BEST & FAV moments at confs are usually chatting in the halls w/ awesome EDUs. #UTedChat
#utedchat We have KYTE Learning where we can earn microcredentials in our district on a wide array of things. You earn badges, not sure exactly how are district is going to do it. But I think it's exciting and you can learn about topics of your interest.
I've always said @Twitter is like when you start dating someone and @Voxer is like getting more serious and dating exclusively. So much easier to progress relationships w/ voice included! #UTedChat
A1: Tara Johanneson, Technology Integrationist & CS Teacher, Sioux Falls Catholic Schools, Sioux Falls, SD...
Anytime I can get together (or on Twitter) with like-minded, creative Ts willing to share it is motivational and valuable PD.
#utedchat
A1: Going to UCET led me to present, which led me to run for the board, which led me to spending time with amazing people across the state, which led to me being a leader, which led to @HSG_UT, which has led to... So I guess that was a good choice. #UTedChat
A2: I need to get to know Google Classroom better...I tried it once last year and feel like I just scratched the surface. I want to be a resource for my teachers who use it! Need to look into what tutorials Google has. #utedchat
A2 - I'd like to learn to better balance blended learning in my classroom. I want more time working with individual students, and the time students are online to be as productive as possible. I would love to see how others have accomplished this. #UTEdChat
A1: Mine was on teacher observation and feedback. It involved one-on-one coaching through an entire observation cycle. Best PD I’ve ever had. #UTEdChat
A2 I’m looking forward to learning more about school leadership as I participate in #lbdl with principals across Utah. Want to make an impact! #utedchat
Sounds like you may have more chances next year. I know @UCET plans #EdcampUT & assisted w/ @washk12 & @sedck12 in planning #EdcampStGeorge. There was also another one in Northern Utah as well. Yay for more Edcamps in Utah! #UTedChat

A1 Another excellent learning experience was the @DrivenToTeach program where I was able to physically visit US History locations. If you teach US History you should look into it!
https://t.co/20fatqJ0yU#UTedChat
Several years ago our family traveled to DC and I visit the Ford’s Theatre Museum where there was an interactive exhibit on the role Lincoln’s character traits played in his leadership. So inspiring! #UTedChat
A2 want to really get down blended learning. Lots to do and read. Would love to see lots of different examples from classes all over the state #UTedChat
#utedchat A1 conferences are my favorite because I can meet people in person and have an authentic conversation. Also Twitter has been a gold mine for me.
I'm here! I'm here! I got distracted analyzing star charts. I LOVE learning! Thanks for letting me learn from ya'll! Debbie, science teacher and tech coach, @SevierSchoolDis#utedchat
A2: I want to best learn how to help my ELL students succeed in their mainstream classrooms and how to help train and support their teachers to be able to do that. To be able to do that, I mostly need the time to seek out the training to figure it out! #utedchat
A2: I would like to continue learning how to better support my teachers with blended learning... How to help them let go of their fear and catch the vision. #utedchat
A2: I want to learn how to be better at blended learning, mentoring, utilizing primary sources more seamlessly in my classroom, google classroom...there are so many things. #utedchat
A2 - Continue to learn/grow/build leadership ability - become well rounded in the world of education - With the movement into 21st century education, I want to increase my knowledge in areas like STEM and the curriculum associated with this #utedchat
A2 Even though I've been in the classroom for many moon, I still need PD on behavior management...Ss are different from when I started teacher so my class needs to evolve to support those changes! #utedchat
A2. I would like more training around blended learning. I would like to be more effective in blending technology in my classroom. It is something that I do everyday but want to increase my skills. #UTedChat
A2: I want to learn how to support ed equity and better long-term outcomes for students-- ways to find students around the edges and provide support to their teachers and counselors. #utedchat
It was seriously one of the most awesome learning experiences I've ever had! I would highly recommend it! You have to apply in Nov/Dec for the following Summer, so check https://t.co/20fatqJ0yU for more details! @DrivenToTeach#UTedChat

A1: Wendy Rush here from UTVA, High impact learning experiences for me always include movement, discussion, and active mentorship. I love concrete, implementable strategies that are proven to be effective. #UTedChat
I totally second this. I keep hearing about making blending learning an experience that is more than what students could have with pen and paper but I don't know how to do that. #utedchat
Always trying to improve - as an instructional coach i love gaining new knowledge/skills and helping my interns and grade levels grow - in my mind it's all about empowering, supporting, and guiding others #utedchat
#utedchat A2: I need to learn Canvas, that will be our LMS down the road, if not next year. We are doing some training but I need to learn more. Technology generally is what I need...
A2 Long list, but the main thing is using effective instructional design. I would like to use my summer to focus on making purposeful choices in my teaching. Hoping the capstone of my masters helps with that process. #utedchat
A3: Utah has a definition for competency based learning in code! Check out this article https://t.co/CQeBpYjPLx and click on SB 143 fir the 5 pillars #UTedChat
Prep for the new school is going well. Hiring awesome teachers, and meeting with a naming committee tomorrow. If you've never been part of opening a school, jump at the opportunity. #utedchat
A3 - Competency-based learning is focused on outcome rather than seat time. Can the learner show what he/she has learned? That's what matters. #UTEdChat
A3: Competency based learning reminds me of my masters program at @wgu where I got to move through info already knew quickly, work on what I didn't know, and was awarded more of a pass/fail grade. I love the idea of it in my classroom but have no ideas on implementation #utedchat
Don't even get me started with Podcasts! I currently have 23+ GBs of podcasts downloaded to my phone. I'm a little addicted. You should check out @HouseofEdTech, @PodcastPD, & others on @EduPodNet! #UTedChat#PodcastPD

Deborah here. Just got home from work - sorry I'm late! Better late than never, unless you're in bell choir (my aunt says). Joining the #utedchat party =).
A3: I struggle with the concept of competency-based learning because I'm concerned about how competency is established-- and must the competency be demonstrated over time or only once? I am hoping over time. #utedchat
A3 competency-based learning means learners know the target, know how to reach said target, and can use a variety of methods to reach target. #utedchat
A3: Utah has a definition for competency based learning in code! Check out this article https://t.co/CQeBpYjPLx and click on SB 143 fir the 5 pillars #UTedChat
I am working on that right now. I am on a lesson I wrote for a grad school class that utilizes the flipped approach. I haven't done it much this year, but want to try it over the next weeks.
I agree though. I need to see how other people do it. #utedchat
A1: @driventoteach was a blast. I love what I'm learning and doing with @HSG_UT and as a mentor in @GraniteSchools and facilitator with @myuea JumpStart... Biggest impact on my students and their learning though was probably @NBPTS Board Certification. And #utedchat are fun!
@vb_kristin a2 pushing content while having a conversation or discussion or reading has helped. Also using @GoogleForEdu and classroom to push it out at the same time as talking has helped. #UTedChat
A3: We are working on a framework that centers on strategies to alter traditional barriers of Time, Place, Pace, Voice, and Choice for K-12. Coming in fall 2018 for Utah!!! #UTedChat check out our hashtag #CBEUtah
A3: students show that they have learned the skills they are expected to learn. We are moving to proficiency based grading next year in granite district and i think it will work well with competency based learning #utedchat
Such a good question! I believe in continuous learning - we can always improve so over time makes sense to me. Mastery suggests an end point, but perhaps there is no end to learning. #utedchat
The @DrivenToTeach program is for US History Teachers only. It was absolutely amazing and should be a definite consideration if you teach US History. Sorry, not for English teachers.

Q4 - How can competency-based learning (such as micro-credentials) be used to provide educators with valuable professional learning opportunities? #UTEdChat
I have flipped my classroom for the last three years and love it. My students do too. Every once in a while technology doesn't work and we have to do a lecture in class and they thoroughly dislike it. #utedchat
A2: I want to learn HOW TO BALANCE MY LIFE. But pedagogically speaking, there are two things: 1. how to effectively "do" Standards-Based Grading in Social Studies and 2. how to effectively incorporate SEL in my classes. So needed! I need time and training. #utedchat
True competency must use multiple measures to assess learning but you have to define the line between busy work and true learning. If they know it and can show it, they should be able to move on. idk if this answers your question...sorry #utedchat
A3: I guess competency-based learning means the ability to execute a given skill or set of skills, as demonstrated by doing the skills. Like in CTE classes. Or like when I went through my EMT certification tests. Many moons ago... #utedchat
A2 I want to learn how to best help teachers find more successful ways to use tech in their classrooms but not just to use tech. I want to help them use tech when it makes the most sense. Tech for tech's sake isn't the best. #UTedChat
A4 - Micro-credentials allow educators to select topics that matter to them and then study in whatever way works for them. They show evidence of learning to earn the micro-credential. This personalized approach allows teachers to be in charge of their own development. #UTEdChat
Interesting. A couple teachers at my school do it. I spent the last days talking with my students about how they felt about it. They were mostly critical of the way it was being done (not the idea itself). So as I try to implement I wanted to do it well. #utedchat
Q2: I want to learn everything there is to know about developing and implementing an effective co-teaching model, melding the gifts and skills of both special educators and general educators into one cohesive yet differentiated classroom. #UTedChat
I went...and I'm a librarian. But then we teach all the things. :) And I collaborate a lot with my history teachers so it was extremely helpful! #UTedChat
A4: Micro Credentials allows teachers to #PersonalizedPD which encourages growth that isn’t “one size fits no one” I think it’s key to differentiate supports for adults just like kids. #utedchat
My principal and I were having a similar discussion yesterday - tech is nice - but as educators we need to be efficient/intentional/purposeful with it - use it as a tool to empower students, not just engage them #utedchat
Then you were able to work something awesome out! I think teachers are missing out by not using their Librarians in a more active role in their schools! Librarians are amazing! Thanks to @BerylGirl for helping me to see that this year! #UTedChat
In reply to
@heathertprice, @vb_kristin, @driventoteach, @berylgirl
A4: anything that gives teachers CHOICE is great in my book! They don’t feel like they’re being forced to listen to the same topic over and over, or sit throughout training that doesn’t apply to them. They can choose what interests them #UTEdChat
A4 By learning in a competency-based way themselves, eds will be better able to provide similar experiences for their students. We need to eat our own dog
food! #utedchat
A4 microcredentials transform the PD experience bc teachers need to have the same opportunities as our students. We need to choose what we want to learn, how we can demonstrate our learning, and then get recognition for what we know! #utedchat
A4 - I think having a micro-credential database would help everyone know what PD to offer. #Edcamp is a great model, but sometimes you want to target instruction for a particular set of learners and goals as well. #utedchat
the SAMR model has helped me categorize tech use in the classroom. Ts like it because it helps them think how to use it more than just substituting old tech with new, but redefining a task that is undoable without tech. #utedchat
I want to implement competency based grading so that I can better differentiate learning for my students. They are all in different places. One size fits all isn't appropriate. #utedchat
Oh yeah, you can have kids do projects 100% #analog & learn just as much or MORE than if they use tech just for the sake of using tech. You can always share out analog stuff so that it still has some digital aspect. #UTedChat
Same. Trying to make sense of it because we know it's coming in @GraniteSchools. Scary part is the time it's going to take to remake entire curricula. No time is being built in to do this on top of everything else. Something has to give! #utedchat
oooh, I would love to talk about what I've tried with standards-based grading in social studies...I don't have all the answers, but I've done a lot of trial and error. #utedchat
@GraniteSchools did a fabulous conference for teachers as part of our teacher work days. In 13 years of teaching, I’ve never heard such positive feedback before. Teachers LOVED choosing their schedule each day. Oh, and the food was great too! #UTedChat
Like I said, I thank @BerylGirl for helping me to see the true value of Librarians or Media Specialists. In fact, I'm considering getting my Library credentials just so I can have that door open to me down the road. #UTedChat

This is cool because @coachbpreece like it, and he taught me two things in high school. 1) State Rights in US History. 2). How to not jump when catching a ball while running a route, thus taking your eye off the ball. #UTedChat
A4 microcredentials transform the PD experience bc teachers need to have the same opportunities as our students. We need to choose what we want to learn, how we can demonstrate our learning, and then get recognition for what we know! #utedchat
A4 #microcredentials serve as #justintime PD so that teachers can get what they want, when they need it most. BUT we need time for PD, collaboration, and lesson planning to make it purposeful and effective #utedchat
A5: I've been wanting to use this in my makerspace...let students (and teachers!) earn "badges" in different tools/techniques that interest them. #utedchat
Q4 - How can competency-based learning (such as micro-credentials) be used to provide educators with valuable professional learning opportunities? #UTEdChat
Canvas is my favorite. It has changed the access my students get to the material, opportunities to relearn/reassess, and enrichment opportunities. #utedchat
In reply to
@wallaceteach, @coachbpreece, @Instructure
I've seen the ability to gamify the classroom in such a way that students earn badges and awards. That could couple with microcredentials if those things aligned with standards. I decided against investing time in it because it seemed too gimmicky/faddish at the time. #utedchat
A5 - Teachers could select outcomes/skills all students should achieve (and possibly some "bonus" topics) and put together a badge system for students. When a student can show evidence of learning, he/she earns a badge. This could be digital or physical. #UTEdChat
And the easiest way is to just jump in. Try some things out and then add things a little at a time. Canvas can do so much, it can be overwhelming, but focus on one or two things you are excited about to start. #utedchat

@wallaceteach, @coachbpreece, @Instructure
A2 Another thing I'd really love to learn more about this year is Data Security, Data Privacy, and even a little bit of Ethical Hacking. We live in a world where data is so important & yet most of us don't really understand how much so. I want to learn more! #UTedChat
Sweet! We can always use more enthusiastic (and tech-savvy) librarians! I did SUU's program...all online, which was very nice when working full time. #utedchat

There's a place for personalized instruction, AND there's a place for group learning. I value both, at different times, for different reasons, on different topics. No reason we can't do "all of the above." Except time... #utedchat
What a great idea! Provides space for student choice—choose how you want to demonstrate your learning to earn a badge—but well defined expectations of what mastery “looks” like. Awesome! #utedchat
A5 - Teachers could select outcomes/skills all students should achieve (and possibly some "bonus" topics) and put together a badge system for students. When a student can show evidence of learning, he/she earns a badge. This could be digital or physical. #UTEdChat
If I can add... plus, the competency part of that competency-based model might help our teachers focus during that PD and encourage them to keep trying in spite of small failures. I’m picturing tech-based PD here.... #utedchat
The follow up question is how to get student buy in though - so many are not motivated by grades...I'm not sure digital badges would be anymore motivating. Thoughts? #utedchat
That's probably what I'll do as well. I already have a MEd & almost Admin Endorsement from @SUUTbirds, so why not go there as well? Just not sure if it will be this next school year or the one after.
#UTedChat
In reply to
@heathertprice, @vb_kristin, @driventoteach, @berylgirl, @SUUtbirds
@vb_kristin I have pondered doing this many times too, but don't know if in reality the benefits outweigh the time investment of creating the system. Is it long term beneficial for our teachers and students? Outside of our own schools so the badges mean anything? #UTedChat
A5 - Teachers could select outcomes/skills all students should achieve (and possibly some "bonus" topics) and put together a badge system for students. When a student can show evidence of learning, he/she earns a badge. This could be digital or physical. #UTEdChat
A5: oh....microcredentials in the classroom...that would be fascinating. I love the idea of students have the freedom to pick the topic. so much flexibility. hmm..the possibilities! #utedchat
Good question - I think it depends on what they recognize. If it's traditional content knowledge, then maybe not, but if its SEL skills and other harder to measure outcomes, then perhaps! #utedchat
A3 Competency-Based Learning is the ability to progress through your learning once you've shown mastery of a concept instead of just waiting on time. I think it has the ability to shake-up schools & learning for the better! #UTedChat
@lars3eb Find a GenCyber Teacher academy to attend! They are sponsored by the NSA and NSF and often cover those topics! They have academies all over the US and are usually low cost or free! #UTedChat
A2 Another thing I'd really love to learn more about this year is Data Security, Data Privacy, and even a little bit of Ethical Hacking. We live in a world where data is so important & yet most of us don't really understand how much so. I want to learn more! #UTedChat
Yes! Exactly. I love the idea of "pods"- new word to describe the old- "rotations". I want to explore this more. It has sm group work, individualized learning, teacher instruction w/ small group, etc. and tech helps make it happen #microcredentials could be used too! #utedchat
I like the idea of competency based/standards based I just have one major concern and that is universities use GPA. They have to be on board before secondary schools can go to this exclusively. You could unwittingly put students at a disadvantage #UTedchat
@wendyRush16 I am glad you mentioned Co-Teaching. I haven't come close to succeeding, but would really like to spend more time on it. I saw @RickWormeli do an amazing presentation on this. He had some resources, anyways. #utedchat
SBG still converts into a letter grade. I've figured out that much. The grades should be more authentic reflections of student learning than the current system. Double edged sword there though. #utedchat
Student buy-in is about engagement & motivation. Consider how hard kids try to level up or get streaks in games. They are persistent because they get real time feedback on their performance. How can we apply this in education? Less grades and MORE feedback. #utedchat
@JenCohKab I am a huge fan of having students create digital portfolios to showcase what they have some in their classes! I think that's a huge peek for them to know they are publishing their work. #UTedChat

A6 - Aspects of Social Emotional Learning could be really interesting to work on. Showing evidence through classroom videos and student work to earn badges. #UTEdChat
A6 I think microcredentialing has its place within an organization or company like Google or Microsoft, but outside of that there is no set standard. #UTedChat
A4: An example of this type of training I am playing with right now is #edpuzzle (since a lot of teacher are mentioning flipped learning). They have a PD system that I am playing with. It is a good review. #utedchat
A6: Tech and EdTech like @UENpd lend themselves readily to this since on-line delivery of self-paced (ish) learning is already standard. Maybe MOOCs. I get the sense that asynchronous self-paced digital delivery is part of the package too. #utedchat
Maybe if enough schools adopt these practices, Universities will get on board. I know there are already quite a few Universities catching the wave. It's only a matter of time. #UTedChat

A6- Trainings about particular tools and systems lend themselves to badges for sure. I think it would be nice to see at a glance who had badges in Canvas or MasteryConnect, etc, in any given building- like an official guru's badge! #utedchat
I know a few schools that were being innovative that ended up hurting students with scholarship and university eligibility because higher ed wasn’t on board with what they were doing #UTedChat

Probably so for a while, but as soon as it becomes routine and the novelty wears off, then what? I'm just not completely sold on the idea that all the effort on my end will get the desired results. #utedchat
@wallaceteach I ❤️ EdPuzzle! It makes flipping work! I have gone through their lessons & it is a good refresher, but I think it also goes back to the competency ? because I wished that I could have just proven I knew what I was doing instead of starting from scratch. #UTedChat

Thanks for a fantastic #UTedChat tonight. @vb_kristin did a wonderful job leading the discussion. Next week join @FarrBfarr as we explore building trust with students.
A4 Micro-credentials could be used to help EDUs show their competencies in a open and easy to share manner. Plus, by them being micro, EDUs would be able to focus on the areas of interest & prove their abilities. I LOVE that idea! #UTedChat
