We have to constantly be willing to upend our idea of possible…
It is a daily process of becoming more aware and through a willingness to remain a curious learner.

#cuechat what's up everyone, Jesus from El Centro California, 5th grade teacher, love all things tech and pushing the limits of what can be used in the classroom!
#CUEchat A1: I’ve always found that once students #Curiosity is piqued, its only natural their overall engagement and results lifts as well. 🚀💡🌱
#CUEBOLD#Befutureready
A1: I wouldn't be here today if I wasn't curious. I didn't become the educator and man that I am by taking classes, I was curious to learn and check out things that I knew little to nothing about #cuechat
And yet, many studies show that creativity is declining.
It is difficult to engage curiosity and creativity in others, if we don’t keep it alive in ourselves.
#cuechat
A1: When a student is curious, they tend to be more engaged and interested in the topic. This creates an environment where they can grow their knowledge. #cuechat
A1: Through volunteer experience in an elementary classroom I've noticed that students who are more curious are more engaged in their education which therefore leads to a better overall learning experience and more knowledge gained. #cuechat
A1 #CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD I'm a big believer in getting kids hooked & also that if kids are not excited, they won't buy in. We used this today but most of the kids understand how a circuit works since Sept because they used it then, were hooked and wanted to know how!
a1 I happen to have my own Kindergartener and I agree 100% I get so excited when those curious eyes light up and a question pops out of his mouth. He becomes an Instant sponge #cuechat#CUEBOLD
A1: I certainly think that it's important for students to be curious about what they are learning. It makes it much more intriguing and motivates the students to put more thought into the subject matter, especially when they are so young. #cuechat
And yet, many studies show that creativity is declining.
It is difficult to engage curiosity and creativity in others, if we don’t keep it alive in ourselves.
#cuechat
I'm not sure about it being a full time gig, but I love going to my son's preK/daycare and seeing the stuff they do there, the curiosity, the creativity, and the funny things they say #cuechat
I'd like to invite all the Chapman students to join us for #OCpubPD. We get together each month to talk about #edtech and effective teaching. Follow #OCpubPD for more info. #cuechat
A1: Through volunteer experience in an elementary classroom I've noticed that students who are more curious are more engaged in their education which therefore leads to a better overall learning experience and more knowledge gained. #cuechat
A1) Opportunities for inquiry over sit and get, not giving students all the answers let them make connections and synthesize...don’t kill curiosity before it has a chance to galvanize #cuechat
A1: CURIOSITY. Ss dig deeper. Research w/ a google search. Ex. This weekend nephew scream/crying over ear ache as I babysat. My niece (1st grade) jumps onto Chromebook & views a YouTube video HOW DO YOU GET AN EAR INFECTION. 🤯 #CueChat
We often have a tendency to treat creativity as an add-on…
We have to be willing to begin to dive in and become more knowledgeable about creativity and innovation.
It is often misunderstood, and that misunderstanding does more to diminish that enhance it. #cuechat
#CUEchat A2: I don’t want to give this one away… the answer is tooooo good! Warning - Your answer may reveal you as a pessimist, optimist or realist…? 🤨🥳😐
#CUEBOLD#Befutureready
A2. Maybe 4%. Students are conditioned to be given the one way to find the one correct answer. This is why open ended responses are so difficult and why they feel comfortable when given #bigfrickinpackets. #cuechat
A2: I'd guess the percentage is really low. Teachers are expected to provide the kids with so much knowledge that it sometimes prevents them from being creative! #cuechat
a2 : Sadly probably drops to 50% and then at 15 years old even more becuase self doubt creeps in. This is why I love the book " What do you do with an IDEA?' #cuechat
“Our idea of a prototypical creative person is completely at odds with our idea of a prototypical effective leader.”
Our Creativity Bias https://t.co/0ykgGAuh8s
Something that we don’t always recognize in our organizations.
#cuechat
Hi Julia! You're one smart girl! Stay active on Twitter as you finish school & encourage your peers to do the same. Continue to participate in the conversation! It's an amazing space to learn & connect w/teachers and leaders that can help you be the best version of you! #cuechat
I like to think that when kids are still young, they are creative and curious, but once high stakes tests really kick in around upper elementary and middle school, a bit of that dies... #cuechat
I'd like to invite all the Chapman students to join us for #OCpubPD. We get together each month to talk about #edtech and effective teaching. Follow #OCpubPD for more info. #cuechat
It is a bit sad that automation and the advent of artificial intelligence leading to less jobs and changing skillsets was the catalyst for this shift…
#cuechat
A2: I would like to think that it is still a high percentage but I have a feeling it is much lower. A lot of schools around my hometown focus on what the students learn rather than how they learn, so the teaching methods don't foster their creativity #cuechat
A2: I’m guessing less, but the potential is still there. I see such bravery in my theatre arts Ss (age 12-14)...they simply need opportunities to play. Ts, let’s celebrate creativity! #CueChat#BetterTogether#PYLlearns

Yes...even beginning in 2nd/3rd grade - but I believe that there are many factors that can contribute: home environment, socioeconomic challenges, life experiences... #cuechat
A2: I would guess around 40%. I think that creativity level drops significantly and that is one larger issues that I see in our current education system. I think that, not in all, but in many classrooms, conformity is more encouraged than creativity. #cuechat
By age 15, Dr George Land found only 12% of students are still at genius creativity level.
Q3: What's your guess for the % of Adults who manage to stay at this level? #CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD (Study https://t.co/Dt34mbjwXk)
#CUEchat A3: This question makes me think ‘how many creative, lateral thinking Adults do we feel we know?’ Teachers I think would rate much higher than general population! 🤔🏆
#CUEBOLD#Befutureready
A3: This one is probably >1%. Factory style education and jobs for centuries killed creativity and unless you are in the arts, creativity is hard to come by. I'm assuming that many of us in #cuechat tonight may be part of that >1% though!

We wanted flying cars and what we got was automation of jobs…
We must realize if it can be codified or automated it will be.
It'll be the depth of our humanness & those “soft” skills that will prepare us for the future and the many unknowns it will eventually show us. #cuechat
Yes. Except it is the sole purpose of school to make us the same. To “fit”. To “go along”. Don’t think so? Read Dumbing Us Down. Read The End of Average. Watch Most Likely to Succeed. School creates sameness. #cuechat@jnxyz
Yes...even beginning in 2nd/3rd grade - but I believe that there are many factors that can contribute: home environment, socioeconomic challenges, life experiences... #cuechat
A3: I really want to say that it increases as we become adults! Maybe because we are no longer forced to think within the walls education tends to put us in? #cuechat
A1: Just learned about “Sparking Curiosity” with @ramusallam and It sure does get me excited & engaged when I’m curious #cuechat
👉🏼💥spreading this message✅
a3 Well that's tough for me. I was once told by a physic that my gift was that I have Boundless Creative Energy so I'm hoping at least higher than 20% #cueChat
A3: My guess would be around 5%. A lot of my college courses in the IES department have encouraged creative activities and it is something that, at first, felt almost foreign because creative activities weren't something that I wasn't used to in a classroom setting. #cuechat
I love these questions because the answers are so different! So many Twitter chat questions sometimes produce the same, gumdrops and unicorns, uber positive answers, this is a nice change! #cuechat
A3: I think the percentage is low, less than 5%, but I also think adults underestimate their creativity. There have been countless times I have complained about my lack of creativity and then I'll think of something as surprise myself. #cuechat
Hello I’m late....#cuechat but I love this topic! I’m an Induction Mentor to new teachers in CA! I’m feeling BOLD! I’m determined to make learning better for Ss!!!!
We have to get past these three inhibitors of creativity, especially as adults…
Fear; Judgment; Unknown
Facing The Inhibitors Of Creativity And Innovation https://t.co/gfMrQyKq1Y#cuechat
A3: I feel like it depends. As someone who recently got out of high school i'd say that my creativity level is pretty non existent. Grade school kind of suppressed my creativity but I feel like adults who use their creativity regularly would have a higher level. #cuechat
We need creatives and entrepreneurs. Most importantly we need people who can be their best self not a trimmed down version of themselves. #cuechat@jnxyz
I love these questions because the answers are so different! So many Twitter chat questions sometimes produce the same, gumdrops and unicorns, uber positive answers, this is a nice change! #cuechat
A different 2018 study found 77% of 1300 high school students reported not being socially or emotionally ready.
Q4. What do YOU think happens between Kindergarten and high school to cause this? #CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD (study https://t.co/Q68pWYafj2)
A4: Many schools rob kids of their abilities to be creative and curious as they get older. Sadly, our schools are still run on a factory style model that is outdated, but we can be the change that is needed! #cuechat

Q4. What do YOU think happens between Kindergarten and high school to cause this? #CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD (study https://t.co/Q68pWYafj2)
A4: Standards, assessments, and adults happen. Think of a pick up game of baseball compared to little league... which one is more fun for the kids.... Adults come in with their rules and structure... #cuechat
#CUEchat A4: While we should be shocked at the drop-off in #Creativity and the high% of students not feeling ready by high school - in reality, mass education was never designed for the fully digital era we are entering. 📲🎆
#CUEBOLD#Befutureready
A4 #CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD if school is not a welcoming place & they spend a huge chunk of time there, how can we expect them to be ready for? School is supposed to be the place to learn, feel safe & welcome...what are we showing them to expect in the real world then?
“Without vulnerability, you cannot create.” -Brene Brown 99U
It is that vulnerability that makes creativity and our innovative efforts often very difficult.
The Internal Shift: The Difficult Side Of Creativity And Innovation https://t.co/UbuHFos8sC#cuechat
A4: When I was younger I had amazing teachers who cared about how I progressed outside of the classroom. As I got older, the teachers that surrounded me seemed to only care about making sure we passed. So I think it's all about the environment you are in. #cuechat
A3: Probably dismal. Creativity is easily stifled by day2day responsibilities. HOWEVER, there is hope. It just takes one spark, one yes, one what if to change it up. CREATIVITY = time & effort. Make the time & watch the effort pay off. #CueChat#magictodo
A4 Lack of SEL awareness, openness, and overall LOW EQ of adults around children puts focus on measurement of success far away from Emotional Intelligence. The subconscious holds onto limiting beliefs and plays them over and over until it paralyses forward motion. #cueChat

and thats part of the problem - we have 150+ years of adding more to the curriculum - but new stuff just keeps coming along! Need a different approach ... #cuechat
Yup I once taught a 71 year veteran how to use the computer when he thought is was impossible. Once he got the hang of it he was like a kid in a candy store. New doors open every day! #cuechat#CUEBold
Maslow’s hoerwrchy If needs. If learners (and employees) aren’t nutured, feel safe, or are not in the right mindset because of basic human needs, forget learning. The basics need to be taken care of first... THEN one can learn. #cuechat
We also have to break down the myths of creativity, from a-ha moments to story of the lone genius.
Creativity, like learning, is a social process.
#cuechat
A4: I think that it is hard to stay positive socially & emotionally when students are being pushed to their limits in the education system, in all the wrong ways. The educational system is structured in a way that's currently causing adverse social and emotional effects. #cuechat
A4: some get really good at the “game of school” but that doesn’t actually prepare you for “the game of the real world” embedding real world scenarios, projects, opportunities for divergent thinking is how we can change that #CUEchat

"Most creativity and innovation in organizations, flickers and fades…most often because we still see it as a flash point, a ‘eureka’ moment…when its truly about perseverance.”
The 'Eureka' Or Perseverance Of Creativity And Innovation https://t.co/8hHnDy2gbV#cuechat
sometimes its rough...getting students to realize it's ok and that I want to hear their thinking, but by the end of the year there are a lot more questions and conversations #Cuechat
.@jnxyz ID'd 5 'Future Literacies' or 'human intelligences' to map Ss progress: Creativity, Community, Thinking and Planning, Project Delivery & Storytelling.
Q5: Which do you think is MOST important for today's learners? https://t.co/7axQpg7uY4#CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD
#CUEchat A5: Instead of cramming more into the mass education system - why not give students the skills or literacies to invent their own futures? That's what the https://t.co/DTlZlEyAAk is all about 🙌🏼🌱
#CUEBOLD#Befutureready
A4: I think social comparison plays a role in this difference. Kindergartners focus on what they are able to do while high schoolers look to how others are doing in school compared to themselves. #cuechat
A5: Honestly, right now, I'm going to go with community. In Hawaii, it's so simple to bounce ideas off of one another from the intense harmony! I think the rest of the literacies could benefit from this as well. #cuechat
agree...I think it's important to understand where our students come from and with what to help support them - this year my group is so much more sensitive than last year's group so I need to be mindful about how to crack their shells #cuechat
A5: Storytelling. The person who can tell you what and why you want that something you've never heard of and don't really need. Them's is cool folk! #CUEchat
A5) Creativity. It’s the cornerstone of everything we do in schools. If that vein isn’t tapped for students, teachers, admin, & everyone else... you got everyone just “playing school” instead of going to school. #cuechat
Always think AND. Too often we think EITHER/OR in our approaches.
Divergent AND Convergent, Open AND Constraints, Pioneers AND Settlers.
AND pushes us past Either/Or thinking.
#cuechat
A5: I hate picking one...but I am going to go with Storytelling. We have to be able to express verbally before we can do the rest. Spinning a good yarn is an art...captivating the listener...it could lead to and support the other Future Literacies. #cuechat
A5 #CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD creativity, mistakivity(being told it's ok to make mistakes), curiosity...all the rest will fall in line but if we don't put value in the things when they are kids then they won't think they are important as adults
A5: I think that it is difficult to choose which is most important. I think that being skillful in each of the five areas is key to helping a student achieve success in their future. #cuechat
A5: I think community is most important. I've always found myself having a better understanding of a class if it was a collaborative class rather than a lecture. #cuechat
A4: Simple. Ss are not encouraged to play. How can one problem solve when one is only required to regurgitate information instead of THINKING CREATIVELY?! #CueChat
A5: As great as all of our tech is, it has isolated many more than it has brought together, unfortunately. I think community is the most important #cuechat

Q5: Which do you think is MOST important for today's learners? https://t.co/7axQpg7uY4#CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD
a5 Storytelling always has been important and always will be. It's hard to escape the reality that we are always "selling" something. It's a skill that will take them far. #cuechat
.@jnxyz ID'd 5 'Future Literacies' or 'human intelligences' to map Ss progress: Creativity, Community, Thinking and Planning, Project Delivery & Storytelling.
Q5: Which do you think is MOST important for today's learners? https://t.co/7axQpg7uY4#CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD
I like to think storytelling is one of my best strengths, and @jesush1979 is a pretty good one himself, especially when we get together and start trading tales from the trenches #cuechat
A5: it’s so hard to pick 1, but I have to say community. Being together with people I can talk to about topics enhances the other 4 #CUEchat#bettertogether
The world will be run by Food Trucks! Self-driving food trucks. Chefs will dominate society. Sorry. I want food truck or chicken stand when I grow up. #cuechat
A5: I think it's community. One of the most important life lessons I've learned is to ask for help when you need it. Every success I have experienced so far is because of the people who have helped and encouraged me along the way. #cuechat
5 https://t.co/7axQpg7uY4 literacies: Creativity, Community, Thinking & Planning, Project Delivery & Storytelling ALSO support adults transition to a fully digital & automated era. Q6: Which one do you think is MOST important for today's TEACHERS? #CUEChat#BeFutureReady#CUEBOLD
#CUEchat A6: No surprise but I find teachers often have a majority of the 20 literacies! My favourite that I’d choose first though is ‘having a sense of #PLAY’ 👻🏂🤸🏻♀️▶️
#CUEBOLD#Befutureready
Just did a session on Future Narratives at #DesignCamp. Interviews with leaders who've engaged in organizational transformation have mentioned that if they could do over, they would spend more time creating a future narrative to better drive their transformative efforts #cuechat
yep...always! #CUEChat working with so many personalities ... even including the weights they carry every morning when they come to school - last year I introduced a check in "how was your weekend" - I was surprised at what some would share #cuechathttps://t.co/AHPs1ywyuE
A6: Community- Teaching is largely isolating. The second most private act. We shut the door and teach. We need to be vulnerable, humble, and open to listening to different ways to teach. #bettertogether#cuechat

A6: Divergent Outlook- having one ourselves models that for our students. Not only showing them how to be divergent thinkers but also how to appreciate others ways of thinking about things #CUEchat
A6: If I had to choose, I would say that empathy is the most important for educators. I believe that so much can be accomplished when someone has a lot of emotional intelligence and is willing to attempt to understand each student & their individual emotions. #cuechat
A6) I think resilience is big, especially for adults. I get the frustration and also see where why some don’t want to bother with learning something new because the educational pendulum will swing back. Change is the new norm... a constant... #cuechat -je
A5: 💜Creativity! When you turn something in, we are looking for the best, something different, unique, a creative approach to a problem! A possible solution that improves...👉🏼👀🥓👏#cuechat
Recently, there has been so much push when someone disagrees with you. We need to prioritize looking at different perspectives without harsh judgement! #cuechat
I designed this one for my 3rd graders last year bc they were my most challenging class and I was trying to find ways to connect with them and build that community #cuechat
They are all important. For us to be more creative and innovative, it requires moving past conventional wisdom. It also requires experimenting and engaging in discovery learning.
