A1: I innovate every day as I try to come up with new and exciting ways to teach content to my students. Never content with doing things the same as I've done them before. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:06 PM EST
A1 I built a trebuchet this year out of cardboard and popsicle sticks for my physics class. Everyone else was making catapults. #scitlap
  • GruntledChalkie Jan 24 @ 9:06 PM EST
I think it's a bit colder where I am for tree frogs #scitlap We do see frogs but usually on gloomy days and they are hopping away so hard to identify
    In reply to @sbosch_spps
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:06 PM EST
I was thinking the same thing. Writing lesson plans is very innovative! #scitlap

  • guyfrye Jan 24 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1: Innovation takes place when you are ready to take a risk. It starts small and you must be brave enough to see it through. #scitlap
  • barrigertz Jan 24 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1 I make stuff with kids every morning at school. But personally I like to make themed food and I recently made all the centerpieces for my daughter's Bat Mitzvah #scitlap
  • MrsAsztalos Jan 24 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1 I am asking more often now "how can I incorporate tech?" and trying to do exploration of the concept more often. #scitlap
  • Terry711 Jan 24 @ 9:08 PM EST
A1 innovate when I solve a problem with an unique solution need to make more frequently #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:08 PM EST
Innovation also requires creativity. I love how @burgessdave describes creativity as taking effort. It does! Innovation takes effort too! #scitlap
    In reply to @guyfrye, @burgessdave
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: I think innovation is one of the things that makes teaching interesting & helps keep it fresh from year to year. Asking yourself how can I do this differently? better? #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:09 PM EST
I didn't phrase it as RISK TAKING! But that hits it on the head. Innovation is not saying in the comfort zone. #scitlap
    • guyfrye Jan 24 @ 9:07 PM EST
A1: Innovation takes place when you are ready to take a risk. It starts small and you must be brave enough to see it through. #scitlap

  • lisaomeeks Jan 24 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1:agree w other. When teaching you are constantly innovating! S see these efforts too and that's why they love your class! #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:12 PM EST
Q2: What skills are students learning in a makerspace? #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:13 PM EST
Hi Everyone, Kristin from MA joining in late! #scitlap
  • lisaomeeks Jan 24 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2: Ss are learning to try new things w/o fear and that's it's ok if it does not work. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Jan 24 @ 9:13 PM EST
A2: They're learning to iterate - try, do, re-do, try again, over and over. And with that, they're learning that failing is not only okay, but the only way to make progress. #scitlap
  • 21stStacy Jan 24 @ 9:13 PM EST
    A2: problem-solving, resilience, patience #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2 Problem solving is one of the biggest. Ss should be learning and practicing the design process. We are doing more of this now with the new #NYSSLS #NGSS. Design and making should be part of what we do as science teachers. #scitlap
  • Terry711 Jan 24 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2 productive struggle, creativity, innovation, teamwork, reflection #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2: Learning safe risk-taking & safe failure...something adults often try to eliminate from childhood but w/ neg consequences IMO. #scitlap
  • guyfrye Jan 24 @ 9:14 PM EST
A2: steps of the Design Process, collaboration, critical thinking, more than one answer to a problem, perseverance, communication #scitlap
  • barrigertz Jan 24 @ 9:14 PM EST
They are learning how to collaborate and communicate and how it's okay to try something and fail and then try again! #scitlap
  • korytellers Jan 24 @ 9:17 PM EST
Jumping in late! Plans were re-arranged and I have to do #MomsTaxi duties tonight. Sitting in between duty, doing this on my phone. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2 When students make things, they really learn the ins and outs of how things work. Nothing beats getting your "hands dirty", especially in science. #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Jan 24 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: They gain confidence as they close the gap between thinking and doing. For some, simply imitating a model is monumental. I think self efficacy is the skill. #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Jan 24 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: When "building" studednts are learning to innovate, to iterate, to persevere, to improve, to create. #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:18 PM EST
That's dedication! Glad you are here! #scitlap
    In reply to @korytellers
  • korytellers Jan 24 @ 9:18 PM EST
    A1 I innovate when Tech doesn’t work or something breaks. :) #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:19 PM EST
    Q3: Why? #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2 Let's not forget the importance of teamwork and communication in a building project. These are not done alone (generally). Ss need to learn these skills. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:19 PM EST
Welcome Kory! #scitlap We are talking about what learning students get from innovation and makerspace.
    In reply to @Partain_Science, @korytellers

    In reply to @Partain_Science, @sbosch_spps
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:19 PM EST
I think those are challenging skills, too! And the most important skills! #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • megan_hacholski Jan 24 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3: Our students need to know that we trust and believe in them to do MORE than just "sit and get." Allowing them some choice and freedom does wonders for their internal motivation and engagement. #scitlap
  • _on11 Jan 24 @ 9:20 PM EST
A2: Anything is possible. Life doesn't always go according to plan, so you need to work with what you have on hand. Make lemonade. #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:20 PM EST
A3: Believe that very few Ss are getting to make stuff, actual stuff, at home. Tech is good but something to be said for actual building/creating/assembling #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Jan 24 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: Many children do not have the opportunity to "explore" at home any more for a variety of reasons. Providing that space/time in school gives them the creative outlet and opportunity to develop the critical thinking skills and collaboration mentioned before. #scitlap
  • korytellers Jan 24 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3 For me, it’s all about the problem solving. Having string problem solving skills can help anyone for the rest of life. Can be applied to all aspects of life and work. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: I think too much of school is prepping for standardized tests. There are so many other experiences kids need to grow #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3 I know that many of my Ss don't get building experiences at home. If not school then where? We need to foster that maker environment. Especially when it comes to 3D printers and such. #scitlap
  • _on11 Jan 24 @ 9:21 PM EST
A3: Why not?!? We have the rest of our lives to fall into line and be "vanilla". They need time to be kids. #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Jan 24 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3: I think it’s equally important for adults to see talent that may not otherwise present itself in classwork. I had a student with LD outdrawing me one Summer. IMO this is the most impt part. #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:22 PM EST
Here is my plug for Odyssey of the Mind. Both my daughters do it and my wife is a coach. Great program for innovation and making. #scitlap
  • MarianaGSerrato Jan 24 @ 9:22 PM EST
A3 cont: And it is not just about the fancy tech (like 3D printers and vinyl/laser cutters). Simply building with cardboard or even paper helps students explore materials in new ways. #scitlap
  • guyfrye Jan 24 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: We can provide the environment where S's feel safe to take risks. We can provide the resources and the support. Show the way! #scitlap
  • Terry711 Jan 24 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3 because we need to cultivate the skills that making and innovation develop! 21st skills plus they are fun and practical #scitlap
  • korytellers Jan 24 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3 I think of the time kids spend with me as “Mental Recess.” As they are building/creating, their minds are learning while playing. #scitlap
  • HowardKiyuna Jan 24 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: I think it’s equally important for adults to see talent that may not otherwise present itself in classwork. I had a student with LD outdesign me one Summer. IMO this is the most impt part. #scitlap
  • 21stStacy Jan 24 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: Schools need to allow kids time for exploration and become comfortable with the unknown esp bc we are educating them to do jobs that don’t yet exist #lifeskill #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:24 PM EST
Learning through play is so important and overlooked! So much emphasis on "rigor." #scitlap #PlayLAP
    In reply to @korytellers
  • barrigertz Jan 24 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3 So much learning happens when kids make and innovate! Content can be learned WHILE in a #makerspace #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:25 PM EST
Q4: When do your students make? #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:25 PM EST
That is an amazing part! Kids are amazing in so many ways! They all have genius in them. #scitlap
    In reply to @HowardKiyuna
  • _on11 Jan 24 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3.2: We recently reorganized all of our son's Lego pieces by color. In doing so, he is able to let his imagination dictate what he is creating. Some days, I never see him because he is so engrossed in building "creations". #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:25 PM EST
So true that this is an opportunity for students to discover talents they may not even know they had! #scitlap

A4 I’m lucky enough that they make every time they see me in grades 3-5. Once every 3 days for 25 minutes. #scitlap
  • barrigertz Jan 24 @ 9:26 PM EST
A3 Learning happens WHILE kids are making and innovating. Content can be infused throughout the process and guaranteed it's stud they will rememeber #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:26 PM EST
A4: I have had a Makerspace corner in my classroom for about 3 years. This year, I see other teachers doing Makerspace as a choice center. #scitlap
  • megan_hacholski Jan 24 @ 9:26 PM EST

  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:27 PM EST
A4: My Makerspace Corner is for students who finish early. I try to plan for students to have 10 minutes most days. #scitlap
  • guyfrye Jan 24 @ 9:27 PM EST
A3: Gives students choice. Hands on experiences. Reaches different types of learners. #scitlap
  • daleyscience - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:27 PM EST
A4 We have a new makerspace in our library. We are looking for ways to integrate into the classroom. Looking for great ideas. I think I need a tour to see what's really in there. I know there are Little Bits Kits. #scitlap

  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:28 PM EST
A4 I have a few lessons that are design challenges. Ss have a separate engineering and technology class. I'm trying to figure out how to best utilize my time without duplicating. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:29 PM EST
What is your favorite design challenge? Do you have free access to supplies or do you set constraints? #scitlap
    In reply to @pentaclethra
  • PerkyScience Jan 24 @ 9:29 PM EST
I give them time in class, but because it is something they are passionate about they almost always work beyond class time. We always start with a Padlet where they share what they want to know. #scitlap

We have maker mornings every day where kids can use the #makerspace for open ended projects of their choosing and then integrate projects into units. Today 3 YO class came in to make snowflakes with this tinker tray. It was so fun! #scitlap
  • korytellers Jan 24 @ 9:32 PM EST

  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:34 PM EST

A5: Do I want a 3D Printer? I mean I want one, but is it worth it? #scitlap
  • Partain_Science - Moderator Jan 24 @ 9:35 PM EST
I think the relevancy part is what, particularly at the secondary level, helps making take the jump from crafts to more design thinking/problem solving. #scitlap

  • 21stStacy Jan 24 @ 9:35 PM EST
A5: More storage!!! We use an incredible amount of cardboard & are always wanting for more storage #scitlap
  • pentaclethra Jan 24 @ 9:36 PM EST
A5 I've been thinking about this. Depends on the focus I guess. Cheap is good but does not necessarily teach the coding or problem-solving that a tech based space could. Rasp Pi, Little Bits, Legos, 3D printer. #scitlap
  • sbosch_spps Jan 24 @ 9:37 PM EST

One of my favorite catapult challenges is to have them build catapults to throw the Christmas Tree ornament (cheap plastic ones from dollar store) on to the tree, or through the wreath. Supplies- plastic spoons elastics... were under $20 for everything.#scitlap

It absolutely drives me crazy to find things broken. And what makes it worse is that because I’m not in this space all day I have no idea if it happens while I’m with students, when I’m not here or before or after school. Frustrating for sure.😡😡😡
