Revise, revise, revise. Grade improves with ea revision. Reflection & growth more important than a number. https://t.co/Pnqf5ojWNf

Morning! Amy from MD here.
Good Morning . I'm not going into work today. But i still needed to wake up for this.
Good morning ! Checking in from Ireland!
Good morning - Maureen from NY here. Interested in today's topic
Good morning, Kaarina from Ontario.
In grade 3, the process is so much more important to me than the product!
I model and show my Ss my revisions, edits and scribbles in my own writing.
For my classes, the focus is on Ss doing low stakes writing every day...journals, reflections, etc. https://t.co/0dcsM6Kwpj
I'm going away next week. It going to hurt.
Drew from PA here. Happy Wednesday!
Good morning
4th grade teacher from CA
Focusing on the writing process takes time and well written rubric.
It is sooooo hard to get 3rd graders to revise. We work on that! We write different versions
Great, thanks! Hope you are too. You have the best images. :)
Took me a while to learn, the secret to teaching writing is constant rewriting. 3 revisions at least. Always.
I am laughing so hard I can't even answer! :)
I teach 1st grade & they are just beginning to know the process & its so important that's emphasized rather than a "perfect piece"
We write different introductions, different conclusions..etc
Good morning . Stacey from NJ. Just turned my 5:00 alarm off for the next 11 days!!
With our writing we look to emphasize the mini lessons. We provide them many opportunities to write across different content areas.
Bring an author into your class in person or via skype to show writing process. My Authors page https://t.co/x08KLcUZDI
1st graders have been working hard on adding adjectives. We had a few share their writing on the announcements. Very brave Ss
Good morning! Kaitlyn from NJ
Peer revising this year has been wonderful!
A really good place to start with teaching writing is the notion of "Showing not Telling"
Woot woot! We're almost to our Spring break https://t.co/QbcjYqJpAE
Good morning . Stacey from NJ. Just turned my 5:00 alarm off for the next 11 days!!
As a tech coach, what can I do to help Ts emphasize the writing process? Any ideas?
Good morning friends. Coming a little late to the party!
When I model on the board, I always have the eraser in my other hand. Even exemplar paragraphs are revised.
I find this true even for myself and peer editing/feedback is really helpful too as long as its constructive https://t.co/8C3B24nrui
Took me a while to learn, the secret to teaching writing is constant rewriting. 3 revisions at least. Always.
G'morning, ! Checking in from the Jersey shore. Praying for 70s, my beach chair& a book 4 break https://t.co/LwThw6h3V8
Nice! https://t.co/ZX6CbxpVZi

Good morning! Nicole from NJ.
same here. Was up till after 12:30.
Good morning gang! Can only drop in briefly this morning.
If any of you have AVID in their building. there are amazing resources for teaching writing! Go to your coordinators.
Yes! This is the key to a competency based class! Whatever it takes to master process product per arbitrary deadline.
I have not had much success with peer editing. I want to protect Ss struggling.
Same here but I've got this internal clock waking me up! And I did want to catch this chat!! https://t.co/8ppKtWf9q3
Good morning . Stacey from NJ. Just turned my 5:00 alarm off for the next 11 days!!
Kinder is abt plz pretty plz put something on the paper! But go frm not knowing how 2 write names 2 this. https://t.co/5wi2ZSNA8W
Students participate in challenge. https://t.co/DfN5pDb4EI It's good for them to see many instances of others writing too
I believe this of almost every class.
Good morning friends! Got caught in e-mail world. How is everyone?
I wish I wrote like that! https://t.co/5BldfDVT85
Took me a while to learn, the secret to teaching writing is constant rewriting. 3 revisions at least. Always.
This year I had Ss use a graphic organizer to record their research before making presentations. Completion and quality went way up!
We practiced this yesterday...love that you're in sync with my class:) My Ss are now working on being great editors:)
I know. Who has the time?
In my room, when a student says "I'm done", no, sweetie, you've just begun! Lots of ways in our notebook to edit.
It does take a special class. Some years it is impossible.
We had Rhonda Friend come in at the beginning of the year. Great way to kick off the year https://t.co/irSnrpvCS5
Bring an author into your class in person or via skype to show writing process. My Authors page https://t.co/x08KLcUZDI
Does Craig get a break, too? Great to see you both:)
Strange that how to get better at writing is...WRITING! Seems to also apply to doing math, shooting free throws, etc.
Allowing Ss to realize that the writing process is ongoing takes the burden off of the first draft being perfect
Teaching the writing process takes a whole lot of time. Its not an easy task.
I share my experiences w/ the writing process and remind Ss to think/use the phrase "the writing process produces quality product"📝
I have trouble keeping track on phone. I'm on laptop with tweetdeck. May have to leave my comfort zone.
Absolutely! https://t.co/iemdip3gLj

(Cont) we highlight first word of every sentence to chalk capitalization, punctuation, variety of words...
Use S writing as a model, how to "bump it up" as a class. Each S sets mini goals based on 6 traits. Multiple intro/conclusions.
We did this too last year Craig! I loved giving feedback and having them edit their blogs that way. https://t.co/VkQ9N0akG4
Students participate in challenge. https://t.co/DfN5pDb4EI It's good for them to see many instances of others writing too
Thanks, Jerry for all you do for all of us!
That's the age old saying isnt it? Practice makes perfect! https://t.co/qtPCKXRHdz
Strange that how to get better at writing is...WRITING! Seems to also apply to doing math, shooting free throws, etc.
Nice dea, Jerry! Especially if he/she can also be the public audience for S work.
Need to give students even more choice when they are writing. Writers write even better when they are writing about what they like!
Brian form Mass.
The power of NOT YET has changed the way some Ts approach writing.
Tell us more about this please!
(Cont). Then we put the document in google translate and listen to it. Looking for repeating words, awkward wording....
Teaching first graders the process is very hard! I model, and the stu write & share every day. I don't grade a lot of their writing
Put emphasis on feedback/ constructive conversations 'along the way', rather than focus on final grade for product.
With beginning writers focus on one thing at a time. grammar, then clarity and so on.
Seems like I've heard that one before. :)
And reading! https://t.co/6yqaBfQ2Dj
Strange that how to get better at writing is...WRITING! Seems to also apply to doing math, shooting free throws, etc.
We're doing that with worms today...writing about what we learned from our wormery:)
Brian from Mass.

Small steps more attainable.
I've found that giving Ss a specific task during the editing process helps such as focus on tone or claims/support
Making it relevant is critical. Older Ss can really thrive when allowed to set out on a meaningful topic.
I find writing to be a more challenging area for me to teach - theres so much we can delve into
. Wish I could find the time to write just for fun. I like writing. A great release. But time...it's the T's silent killer!
One of most powerful ways to emphasize process over product is to write in front of kids. Model the process.
We have readwritelisten I think is the name. It is an add on google. Kids love it to listen to their stories
Connect it to reading/read alouds & mentor texts "magic of 3", word choice, etc.
Mini lessons, journal practice & a checklist to work through the steps- can't have a final product without going through the process
The 💜 of writing inst is the conference w ind Ss. There you focus on that S's needs & coach through the harder work-revision/edits.
Reading also makes us better writers.
I've been blessed to bring and to my class via Skype in the last 2 years.
I'm with you! I never grade their final product. I just take confer notes
Yes, we need to be writing more- everyday with Ss. https://t.co/bXLZTFM9gu
Teaching the writing process takes a whole lot of time. Its not an easy task.
We work on just regular habit OF writing creatively each week w just a short prompt, 250/words. Get it out first, kids!!
Or as one of my favorite brain researchers, Pat Wolf, says, "Practice makes permanent" https://t.co/vkQkJOpoCt
That's the age old saying isnt it? Practice makes perfect! https://t.co/qtPCKXRHdz
Strange that how to get better at writing is...WRITING! Seems to also apply to doing math, shooting free throws, etc.
We were ortunate to be able to speak with about writing and to participate in book talk. https://t.co/u0W9KGFD3K
I've been blessed to bring and to my class via Skype in the last 2 years.
That's a great idea! We have a Writers' Cafe quarterly, but that would be so much more real time during announcements.
Tardy to the partaay! Oona from NJ. I'm fashionably late.
Emphasize reading, writing, talking, making, solving,...needs to occur in every class, every day. Tech can make it better.
Yes, our break is this next week.
We also need to be realistic about writing tasks. I have seen some truly irrelevant assignments in curriculum.
We also use Lucy Calkins @ our schl. Lots of mentor texts, checklists, anchor charts, & rubrics.
In K-2 theres lots of possibilities 4 shared writing exps which help kids see thoughts come 2 life on paper https://t.co/6wkRotzhuk
Teaching first graders the process is very hard! I model, and the stu write & share every day. I don't grade a lot of their writing
Build in lots of mini lessons as needed for success.Peer editing, lots of opportunities for revising & editing. Modeling excitement.
Writing has to be practiced constantly in order to build necessary skills; it cannot be a periodic activity
This is so important. I think we also need to do our own writing (beyond modeling) in each genre. https://t.co/ffK9avfjpF

What a great process Susan. 👍👍👍👍👍 https://t.co/pIiEo1BwVE
(Cont). Then we put the document in google translate and listen to it. Looking for repeating words, awkward wording....
I can't say enough wonderful things about the instructional approach designed by my good friend Ss self assess
We write a lot. All Ss have Writer's Notebooks. They write every night for 10 minutes and during class time. Need to build stamina.
I'll never forget author telling our students that he's been successful because he's a good reviser.
☕️🍰☕️🍰☕️🍰☕️🍰☕️🍰☕️🍰☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️ Later in the day 🍷🍷
We use the Expanded Expression Tool to help Ss who struggle understand a framework and know how to begin their writing.
But quick writes can be fun too! Had 5th graders try to persuade us to use a certain song for our "Rock the Test" video that Ts make
I like that even more! That one is going in the bank!
Don't assign what you don't do. Ss will work hard when they see you working hard!
Thank you! I was not an ELA T before this role. I like to make sure I'm helping as best I can!
I call standardized test, timed writing their "fake writing"
I love quick writes! So do the Ss. I did one yesterday with them. Very powerful!
We often don't get a "final" product. Somtms we are all abt the intro, or using dialogue, and Ss share tht https://t.co/Ts6C6qik81
I'm with you! I never grade their final product. I just take confer notes
Highly recommend the podcast "Stories from the Teaching Life" by She talks about T as writer, homeruns & strikeouts
Not to get on my soapbox again, but if curricula were less packed, we could take the time to work on revising and editing.
Indeed! The second of the three foundational "Rs" of any great classroom: Relationships, RELEVANCE, and Rigor.
Yup. Showing kids that those books took years to get into the shape they hold in their hands is so powerful.
"Thesis 1-2-3," often where voice goes to die.
Reading is critical for young writers. It models writing styles, Ss can "hear" what good writing looks and sounds like.
What would tell us? We've got this!!!!
I give my Ss free write for hw and I have found opportunities to practice free writing skills in class! 😊📝
Also implemented gratitude journals one year as another means of getting some writing in our day.
