Q3. What do you think the biggest barrier preventing young people from choosing Computing at GCSE? How could Hour of Code help with this? #caschat #ks4
  • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:27 PM EST
Honestly couldn’t agree more!! I met a female blacksmith who was amazing. She was 1 of 200 blacksmiths in the country and had so much passion and drive #CASChat

  • DebugEdu Dec 4 @ 3:29 PM EST
    #caschat what did I miss??
  • Mr_G_ICT Dec 4 @ 3:29 PM EST
#caschat Computing is about time and energy. I'd love to have more curriculum time. The programming and accessing this first time is difficult too. Smallbasic we try to make fun....I wish i had a million hours to teach and plan
  • OkComputing Dec 4 @ 3:29 PM EST
A3 - the idea that it is too difficult and maths heavy. #caschat
  • ItsMiasTweets Dec 4 @ 3:30 PM EST
Question 3 has just gone live! #caschat
    • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:27 PM EST
Q3. What do you think the biggest barrier preventing young people from choosing Computing at GCSE? How could Hour of Code help with this? #caschat #ks4
  • MrHeadPrimary Dec 4 @ 3:30 PM EST
I think we need to break the stereotypes. 1. Computing isn't hard 2. it isn't (just) for Geeks 3. It isn't a 'boys' subject 4. We need some serious addressing of the subject knowledge gap at primary. #caschat
    In reply to @_melski
  • martincaddy Dec 4 @ 3:31 PM EST
A3) Can't really speak for GCSE but I think at Primary level the children are enthusiastic we need to build teacher knowledge / confidence to get it going. I guess older children may see it as a difficult subject #caschat
  • Mr_G_ICT Dec 4 @ 3:31 PM EST
#caschat I always say that there should be a sign "welcome to computing, this is hard" - we also get less curriculum time than every other bucket 2 subject.
  • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:31 PM EST
This is such a lovely idea and a great opportunity to meet role models! #caschat
  • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:31 PM EST
Hi and welcome! We’ve talked about our plans for #hourofcode and our inspirations! #CASChat
    In reply to @DebugEdu
  • DebugEdu Dec 4 @ 3:32 PM EST
I think the primaries do a good job in difficult circumstances, but would be amazing if coding was given proper space in curriculum so students come to secondary with a standard set of skills #caschat
    In reply to @Mr_G_ICT
  • Mr_G_ICT Dec 4 @ 3:32 PM EST
#caschat our sign up rate for computing this year is 1/3 girls, that's down to the cyber security challenge and really focusing on making computing interesting and fun!
    In reply to @MrHeadPrimary, @_melski
  • DdR333 Dec 4 @ 3:32 PM EST
Definitely starts at Primary and, within Primary, should start at EYFS #caschat
    • MrHeadPrimary Dec 4 @ 3:30 PM EST

We desperately need more training and resourcing. #caschat

A3 - perhaps some physical computing projects on hour of code could help to make it more accessible? #caschat

    Absoloutely! #caschat
    In reply to @DdR333
  • ItsMiasTweets Dec 4 @ 3:33 PM EST
    #caschat A3!
    • andrewpledger Dec 4 @ 3:32 PM EST
I think the impression that it's either plain maths or just making games. It's that and everything in between! I think most people don't realise the scope of computing until they've left school sadly, myself included.
      In reply to @mycodekit
  • CCCC_9999 Dec 4 @ 3:33 PM EST
Pretty good. Some did it for the first time in their lives. #Caschat

A3 Are a sufficient number of schools providing opportunities for young people to truly have a choice to select Computing at GCSE? #CASChat
  • MrHeadPrimary Dec 4 @ 3:33 PM EST
Hopefully over time it will come closer to 1.5/3 #caschat
    In reply to @Mr_G_ICT, @_melski
  • Mr_G_ICT Dec 4 @ 3:34 PM EST
#caschat however, that is down to secondary planning backwards. it's down to primaries and secondaries working together to make a proper learning journey
    In reply to @DebugEdu
  • DdR333 Dec 4 @ 3:34 PM EST
    Brilliant #caschat
    • DebugEdu Dec 4 @ 3:32 PM EST

  • DebugEdu Dec 4 @ 3:34 PM EST
Definitely, a change from DfE on computers mgs place in curriculum would be great too. Our targets are based on maths KS2 scores, how about a computing score? #caschat
    In reply to @Mr_G_ICT
  • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:34 PM EST
Completely agree - what do you think we can do in our everyday to break these stereotypes? #caschat
    In reply to @MrHeadPrimary, @_melski
  • MrHeadPrimary Dec 4 @ 3:36 PM EST
Training for primary teachers to break the stereotypes for them first. Too many dismiss it as 'not for them'. Reinforces the stereotype. #caschat
    In reply to @mycodekit, @_melski
  • DdR333 Dec 4 @ 3:36 PM EST
Would be good. The unplugged stuff issuers already is fab. Only drawback woukd be that old chrstnut Lack of Resources 😊 #caschat
    • OkComputing Dec 4 @ 3:32 PM EST
A3 - perhaps some physical computing projects on hour of code could help to make it more accessible? #caschat

My issue is with our local HS not teaching coding/CS. All the talent in my year 6 😩😩😩 #caschat
    In reply to @DebugEdu, @Mr_G_ICT
  • DebugEdu Dec 4 @ 3:36 PM EST
    This. Definitely! #caschat
    In reply to @MrHeadPrimary, @mycodekit, @_melski
  • tech_magpie Dec 4 @ 3:36 PM EST
A3: Actually I think sometimes teachers are partly to blame. It's socially unacceptable for me to say "I'm rubbish at Maths" to students, because it devalues the subject. I think "I hate computers" should be similarly expunged from all school teachers' vocabulary. #CASchat
    • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:27 PM EST
Q3. What do you think the biggest barrier preventing young people from choosing Computing at GCSE? How could Hour of Code help with this? #caschat #ks4
  • CCCC_9999 Dec 4 @ 3:37 PM EST
    A1. It's @KariLawler! She's a great inspiration to all, young & old! #caschat
  • Mr_G_ICT Dec 4 @ 3:37 PM EST
#caschat I'd love to do liason with primaries and really help them plan a curriclum in my area, i think it's so important to build that relationship to help primaries....
  • CCCC_9999 Dec 4 @ 3:37 PM EST
    A2. It's @KariLawler! She's a great inspiration to all, young & old! #caschat
  • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:38 PM EST
Q4. Do you use mobile devices in your computing classroom? Which apps do you use and what are your favourites? #CASChat #edtech
  • andrewpledger Dec 4 @ 3:38 PM EST
I think it would be good to show how it links to other subjects like science and art, to show how wide reaching and accessible it really is #caschat
    In reply to @MrHeadPrimary, @mycodekit, @_melski
  • tech_magpie Dec 4 @ 3:38 PM EST
A3 cont. Just like "we're all teachers of literacy and numeracy" I think we should all be teachers of digital literacy too. All teachers. No excuses. This might need funding and teacher CPD but we must do it. No good letting the kids believe DL is unnecessary or hard. #caschat
  • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:39 PM EST
I saw that when I was teaching aswell, regarding the other Bucket 2 subjects :( Do you do a lot of session outside of the classroom? #caschat
    In reply to @Mr_G_ICT

  • tech_magpie Dec 4 @ 3:40 PM EST
A3 cont Hat tip to @MissPhilbin who may have made this point a few years ago actually. It's why my newly appointed Digital Ambassadors will be offering ICT training to teachers soon! #caschat

  • martincaddy Dec 4 @ 3:41 PM EST
A4) Mobiles could have a place even in Primary but safeguarding rules mean they are absolutely ruled out - I can see why but I can also see the other side. Tablets have their space though Scratch Jnr being a place to start. #caschat
  • mycodekit Dec 4 @ 3:41 PM EST
In the words of Grease: "We’re all in this together!” - How good is your school at trying to get Computer Science into other subjects? #caschat

  • kjkillick Dec 4 @ 3:47 PM EST
A3 Where to start! I think the first hurdle is perceived difficulty. Why are you going to risk doing a GCSE where you may get a lower score, than go for something safe where you get a higher score? #caschat

I find students at our code club respond well to the idea that us adults can fail too. If we get something wrong or forget something we defer to them for an answer. Breaks down the adults know all and kids know nothing dichotomy #caschat

A5) From the start let them know mistakes will happen and it can be tough. Tons of reassurance that failure is part of learning and you won't break anything. Praise for fixing a problem, review afterwards to reinforce the mistakes are part of learning. #caschat
