Hello everyone. Welcome to #espechat, I'm Eric & I'll be your moderator tonight. Who do we have joining us? Tell us your name, City, State, & Super Bowl Prediction. Eric Turrill; Round Hill, VA; Patriots 34-28
Hey everyone! Ross from Central MD here tonight. I teach K-5 PE and Iāll mainly be lurking tonight since Iāve never done a FFN. As much as I want the Rams to win, I donāt see Brady losing this one. Pats 28, Rams 24 #espechat
Keep in mind a FFN/Event can have the parents participating or observing. Participating is preferred but observing has strong positive outcomes as well. Let's get started! #espechat
Hi Jeremy Opfer from Wentzville, MO. I am studying Digital Connumications in Education with @ghartman. This is my first time participating in a Twitter chat. #espechat
A1: Sept. Family Flag Football Sept: Bring Your Parent to PE week Oct: Fall Hike Night Nov: Turkey Trott Nov: Family Bowling Night I take Dec & Jan off. Feb: Heart Healthy Run. Continuedā¦ #ESPEchat
A1 continued) March: Sportsmanship Day Handball Tournament April: Spring Hike Night May: Disc Golf Night June: Field Day (I consider my Field Dayās as FFE because my parents run the stations, assist w classes, but also can come & play the Ss ) #ESPEChat
A1) I am following tonight as I haven't actually had a FFN, but i do a fun run every year where students, parents, and siblings are encouraged to participate. I have been doing this for 12 years.
#espechat
Lara Cox from AZ. I teach K-5 PE. I pick the Patriots but really would like to see them lose to be honest. A1 I've done a few FFN and events but always looking for new ideas #espechat
A1 I have hosted an event. Last year families came in the evening and did stations. So easy! And have had families come in and cup stack before school on World Stack Up day #espechat
#espechat A1 I have conducted FFN for seven years. Started as a school event. last 3 yrs were a district wide event bringing in between 300-400 participants. Included organizations or businesses health related. Activities, displays of student work, social services, exhibitors
Hey! Iām Courtney from Crownsville. Iām a 4th year PE teacher and have done a FFN. We do stations around the school, group yoga, group zumba/fitness, a healthy snack, and a jump rope team demo #espechat
A1) I havenāt had one. We do a Fun Night every year still, like a carnival type thing but not much activity sessions. I would REALLY like to do a āBring your parent to PEā day though... #espechat
A2: It would be a fantastic chance to advocate for your program. Get parents on your side. It would also help build the bridge between school and home. Might actually open the minds of some of the adults. #espechat
#espechat A1 Used the whole school, classrooms gym library and hallways for activities geared for littles to adults. Cafeteria and hall for exhibitors, another hall for display of HPE student work. One activity Ss designed mini golf holes.
I'd rather stay after than come back on the weekend. And some schools can't be opened on the weekends without admin or security. More work than necessary for me. #espechat
Q2 the benefits of hosting a family fun night is hard to choose one, but if I had to pick one it would be the collaboration that happens with the students, staff, and parents. With it all focusing on living a more physically active lifestyle. #espechat
A2 great way to advocate for #PhysEd and show parents the amazing learning going on in our classes. Also gives students the opportunity to teach their parents what they are learning #espechat
A2) Again, havenāt done one but I would guess it could help eliminate the stigma of the āgym teacherā and show parents and the community what a quality #PhysEd program looked like in todayās schools. #espechat
A2: 1) Get to know your parents and students outside of the classroom. 2) Educate my parents on what is available in their community for family fitness. 3) Promote my program & advocate for the importance of #physed. #ESPEChat
Hi Eric & #ESPEchat šš¼!! Joining in a bit late! My name is Stephanie Sandino, Iām a ms #physed teacher in Southern California šš¼. Mm no exact predictions, I just want the Rams š to win šš¼
A2) I get to interact with parents and students in a different way than I do on a daily basis. I feel like we get to have fun together, and I am not really "ON" as far as classroom management and making sure I get through a lesson.
#espechat
#espechat A2 Advocating for a quality HPE program. Parents, bd mbrs, community mbrs, state and local pols, business leaders attend and see what we do. It is not the PE they remember. These relationships are developed and allowed my Ss additional opportunities.
A1 I haven't done a FFN in my current school; however, I have done a jump rope for heart event where parents were invited. Keeping parents engaged in student learning is key! #espechat
#espechat A2 I am a firm believer in relationships and the importance of building those relationships. You just have no idea the doors that can be open when you have developed a positive relationship.
A2 Itās the opportunity to reach out and build relationships, advocate for your program and instill lifelong moving values as a family. The meaning behind it runs deep, it definitely promotes an active community which in turn helps with buy in! #ESPEchat
A2: IMO the more u can show adults activities that actually occur in #physed, the bigger the "win". Most have no idea what PE "looks like" today. ex. Mark had his kids show mini golf holes they created. Also, the reason "Bring your "adult" 2 PE" days are really valuable. #espechat
A3) My Sportsmanship Day Handball Tournament is a 9 school round robin tourny. Each school puts a team of 5th graders together & we all get together 1 Sat. in March to play each other & celebrate Sportsmanship. Great PR. It reminds parents how to act at a sport event. #ESPEchat
A3 I have hosted a semester long swim class for our families with autism to help them feel comfortable in the pool where our community swim program is held. It was an amazing experience for me as well as pour families. I have such respect fro them! #ESPEchat
A2: Building relationships with students, families, administration, and the community. It provides a fun and free event for families to enjoy time together while advocating for PE programs! #ESPEchat
A2) I have had business partners participate in my fun run. They have helped in many ways from volunteering and providing snacks and coupons for their businesses. Also have had high school students from our district come help and get volunteer hours.
#espechat
A3 I have hosted a semester long swim class for our families with autism to help them feel comfortable in the pool where our community swim program is held. It was an amazing experience for me as well as pour families. I have such respect fro them! #ESPEchat
A3) Recently the school board made a visit. They were pretty shocked to see the technology, activities, cross-curricular lessons and assessment strategies that take place in the #PhysEd āclassroom.ā #espechat
Hey all. Josh from Virginia Beach, sorry Iām late. I havenāt done a FFN but I have hosted Family PE Days where parents can come in and see what skills they are learning. Gives the students a chance to teach their parents which is cool #espechat
A3 for world record speed stack day vb schools do a relay cup stack competition that allows all schools the opportunity to compete against each other. We tweet it out and have even done live video #espechat
#espechat A3 Youth sport organizations (FB, Cheer, BB), H.S., Hospital, Clinics, Dental services, social service organizations, Pk Dist. YMCA, Police, Fire, Drug disposal, local Aldermen and pols, Lions Club, Grocery store, State Rep and Sen, to name a few
Our schools here were closed today and are already closed for tomorrow and Thursday. Most days missed this year (5) since we moved up here 35 years ago. Previous high - 2. #espechat
A3) My Family Disc Golf Night is held at a local disc golf course and the local disc golf club, Nova Disc Golf Club, helped us get a grant for 5 disc golf baskets plus they donated 25 used disc golf discs. #ESPEchat
A3 This yr my district leads and many of the PE teachers are running a Family Fitness Night. We will have community companies that connect to fitness as vendors and we (PE Ts) will bring in the activites @rsville02#espechat
#espechat A3 These relationships allowed my Ss and school running club entry to the City's half & 5K free entry. Due to relationship I developed with Pk Dist, their board, local Aldermen, City Committee mbrs, and running organization.
A3: Take Your Parent to PE Week w/ @ActiveSchoolsUS was a huge success for us this year. In a weeks schedule we teach 58 blocks of PE. We had at least 1 Parent in 56 of those blocks. Final class was a double class & we had 15 parents in there playing. Best PR. #ESPEchat
A3 have not had "community groups" but have had outside companies, Tae Kwon Do, fitness do stations for FFN, also had local bike company do free bike inspections/helmet fittings for bike rodeo. HS students come give back as Field Day volunteers #espechat
A3 I havenāt but something I thought cool that I recently saw was our local @orangetheory in Chino Hills have sessions for the high school basketball team. Sharing an event with another school/s is definitely a great š” #ESPEchat
A3: Mark gets donations of healthy snacks from local grocery stores and tons of community health/sport/activity organizations are thrilled to get to have a table and are more than willing to staff it. Kids teach CPR using dummies obtained with a grant. #espechat
A4) Art, music and PE collaborate at our school for a performance night done for each grade level. The students perform dances learned in PE, songs learned in music, and artwork displayed. Parents sit and watch at this event, rather than participate. #espechat
A4 Iām in the process of planning a heart day in collaboration with Technology and Library. Gym will be set up as cardiorespiratory system and they will be doing a break out activity using cardio info in the library while they wait for their turn in the gym. #espechat
#espechat Yes, any business or organization that I felt was health related I reached out to. Lots of constant follow up. The last couple of yrs, because of how big it had gotten, organizations were reaching out to me asking how to get involved.
Q4 We do a Dance Recital every year with our kids in the ABA program for the parents and staff. two years ago we decided to add our Art Club to the event and we called it "An Evening with the Arts." It was even better with the collaboration! #espechat
A4 I am sure they would help if we asked. They help with May/Field Day. Each area has their own activity for the event. Add Esl and Apex/Gifted to my list of teachers that helped with our event #espechat
A4 I have done a Family Bowling Night during the book fair parent night. Once or twice we also did a PTA pizza dinner night during it so families could eat before/after their bowling slot, PTA made $ from pizzas too everyone won #espechat
A4: During America Education Week We host a Family Bowling Night while Library hosts a Book Fair Night. I borrow bowling equipment from 2 other schools to create 25 lanes. Families can reserve a bowling lane in 45 min intervals. (Continued...) #ESPEchat
A4: Family Bowling Night continued... 5:00-5:45,5:45-6:30,6:30-7:15, or 7:15-8:00. I can fit šÆ families in a 3 hour span at 25 lanes. We use sign up genius for lane reservations. https://t.co/HPlLrPlk2H. Great PR with šÆāFamilies. #ESPEchat
A4) Many years ago we used to host a station type event. PE would provide 10 stations, music, library, art, computer would all provide 1 station each. Parents could rotate around and get a chance to experience and meet all the specialists. #ESPEchat
A4) Many years ago we did a 1st grade Fitness night. Art made the decorations & costumes, music taught a rhythm or dance, PE provided a few demonstration events. Parents observed. #ESPEchat
A3. Have partnered for 5k runs for the school in the past for special fundraising causes. I miss my old family fun nights but the gym is used 7am till 10 pm all winter for sports. #espechat
A4 As for hosting, when I was teaching K-6 I often invited the kinder teachers to come on in and join. When I taught them the Whip/Nae Nae (#physed style) we had a little show and tell in their class after the lesson. I provided brain boosts monthly as well #ESPEchat
A4: Teachers from all subjects volunteer to help out, and that includes from all 3 buildings in the district. In turn, Mark always volunteered for "Family Math Night" and "Family Reading Night". #espechat
A4 we had a combined Art/Dance/Music night several years ago. Ss showed off their dance skills in the gym and their singing in music and their artwork. It was a genuine hit with the Ps #espechat
#espechat A4 I get staff from all 3 of our bldgs to help, critical. Also, our JHS hosts a math and reading nite. I always make sure PE has a presence and station at those events. That is crucial for 2 reasons. It allows me to go to them and request their help for FFN and...
A5: I run an obstacle course every year as a fundraiser. I have parents and community help build, man, and take down the obstacles. But only students are allowed to run it. #espechat
A5. I participated in a dodge ball fundraiser for my old baseball team. Several of the teams were parents and even in the finals it was parents vs. their own kids. #espechat
A5) I never have, but that definitely doesnāt mean you canāt. I have been approached by PTA, admin, and student leadership team to charge a small fee or request a canned donation to support local food shelters or animal shelter. #ESPEchat
#espechat A4...I want to make sure PE has a presence. Math nite I run a math scavenger hunt in the gym. Reading nite I run stations related to a Dr Seuss book. Each page is read and then activity performed that relates to that page in book. All movement based but doing math/read
I was just thinking about how PE is usually interactive for parents, but music and art are more of a "show" or performance. This gives families more time to play together. #espechat
A5) The fun run that we do is used as a fundraiser for PE. We sell tshirts. It doesn't make a ton of money. We started the fun run bc we wanted to get a climbing wall in our gym. It took us a few years, and our PTO chipped in for the last bit to get it. #espechat
We borrow 60 straw bales from a local feed store. Use a ton of my equipment. District grounds and maintenance help a TON! I have 23 obstacles for the upper grades. Littles get the first 15. #ESPEchat
A5 not as a fundraiser but we have had students bring cans in during our world record speed stack day and we āstackedā the cans and then donated them #ESPEChat
A5 I have not but I have had parents come in and participate during Jump Rope for Heart. And I try to set up a table at PTA nights to help spread the word about fundraisers/events #espechat
The Family Bowling Night is our biggest event of the year. I could never take out that event. & having it coupled with the book fair really brings out the community. #espechat Sign Up Genius is a big help.
A6: When I first started at my school 17 yrs ago. I set up a āRound Hill Center for Fitnessā as a way to get to know my parents. Every Tues & Thurs from 3:30-6:00 during February. 15 Muscular stations mixed w 15 cardio stations. 1 min per station w a 30 sec rotation. #ESPEchat
A6: I think how much time you have to be the leading force behind it, and also how much support you will have. If it is just you, without much help, you may want to start small. #ESPEchat
A6 what resources do you need, how much $ will it cost, will PTA support for stations if necessary? Also want to think about how many people/safety considerations and keeping people hydrated/safe if it's overly warm out. Can't go wrong w/ providing healthy snacks! #espechat
A6 The population you work with, socioeconomic needs of the families, ease of transportation, additional childcare, what ever makes it easiest and most welcoming for the families #espechat
A5 No, not that I know of (my 3rd year at my site). Not sure it would fly as a fundraiser night since we have quite a bit of fundraisers with other groups on campus. The value in FFN is absolutely priceless though, something that can happen 1-3 times per year to start w #ESPEchat
#espechat A5 Every yr I get donations from Pk Dist and YMCA and some businesses and got admin and donors ok to raffle off these items. Tickets were only 50 cents. Nice items: memberships, swim passes, fitness equipment, free classes, etc
A3: For the Nickelodeon World Wide Day of Play. This is where Nick goes off the air 1 hour on aSaturday. I would set up a mini field day w 12 stations that the families could run themselves. Great PR, great chance to meet & mingle with my families. #ESPEchat
A5 Our monthly skate night is a fundraiser with half the proceeds going to our PE program. This helps a lot to be able to purchase random equipment during the year. #espechat
A6: I would think student and community interests. If you're hosting a soccer themed night, but your community is interested in basketball, how many people are going to come? I think having a set theme for the night is important too #ESPEchat
We also do a February Heart Healthy Run and used to do a March Shamrock Shuffle. My March is now booked with the Sportsmanship Day Handball Tournament. #espechat
Yes. We rarely miss due to snow, as we have great snow removal, but when the temps aren't going to get above negative double digits, they don't risk it. Lots of kids walk to school in the Chicagoland area. #espechat
A6 Start with a theme and start simple. Itās the simple things that usually go over well. Kinda like the empty box kids play with at Christmas instead of the expensive toy that came in said boxš #espechat
A6) Space, Equipment, Time commitment, parents participating/observing, on/off site. Do you invite county superintendants? Do you invite board members or press? #ESPEchat
A6) How to advertise? School, PE, PTA Websites, School, PE, PTA, Classroom teachers newsletters, School wide email blast, school morning TV show, school scrolling announcements, school billboard, twitter, facebook, Instagram. #ESPEchat
A6) Our primary school (k-2) is on the same campus as the elementary school (3-5) and the middle school. So, for our fun run we don't have to go off campus at all. This was one reason we thought it would work. Plus we could do it ourselves. No worries about traffic. #espechat
A6. For our school Winterfest, students create "healthy" smoothie recipes prior. Our @FUTP60 team collects, collates and copies to a 1 pager 2 b shared. Then they pick 3 to make and serve as free samples. Not a big allergy concern b/c parents are present at event. #espechat
A7 keep it simple the first time but over plan/prep for a worst case so nothing stresses out. Have more stations or volunteers than you need and expect more Ss to show up than probably will to make sure you don't have safety concerns or run out of space/equipment #espechat
A7: I would suggest using photos of your event to make a poster collage to hang outside your gym, up by the office, or on your bulletin board. We hang a banner after each event. Top row shows what we did last year. (to be cont.) #ESPEchat
#espechat A7 Start small with a well thought out plan when approaching Admin for approval. Identify a date in advance to allow for planning. Recruit volunteers, starting with staff. Plan like crazy. Include notes to exhibitors like when doors will open for them to set up, ....
A7) Talk to some colleagues about it first.See where you can get buy-in and support.I was so nervous about our first fun run, but my parapro was so excited and helpful Get the students excited! We do give everyone a ribbon while also awarding top finishers in each grade. #espechat
A7: (cont.) Bottom row shows what we have had & whatās to come. Great PR for your program all year long. When my administrators are giving potential parents a tour of the school, they show all the community family events we do throughout the year. #ESPEchat
#espechat A7 ...what doors to enter, skirts for tables (decorated butcher paper), where to park. Check in procedure for Ss and their families. Follow up TYs to exhibitors and volunteers.
A6 Date and time, space, equipment, promotion/push-out, some type of sign up to figure logistics (ie. Space/equip), inviting stakeholders, having modifications for diverse crowd, liability forms (just thinking out loud on this one), perhaps some type of incentive/s #ESPEchat
A8: Every time a see a parent in the halls that has been to one of my many events I am able to relate on a more personal level with the parent. Building a community. #ESPEchat
A8 1st bike rodeo done w/ @Goshengatorspe it was May few years ago, had rained for like 19 of 21 days. That evening Ss and parents kept showing up...and showing up...and showing up..so cool to see a couple hundred families on bikes #espechat
A8. Several families always share that they are now hooked on smoothies after trying and creating them for the Winterfest. That is the goal: introduce people to healthy ideas and let them take it from there! #espechat
A8) I always get positive feedback from parents about our fun run. They like it bc everyone can participate together. That's why I like it too! #espechat
Have to run! But I got so many ideas running around in my head now! So excited to begin thinking for my next FFN! Thanks so much for moderating Eric. Great job! #espechat
