A1: If we don't meet the needs of all learners, then those we don't meet the needs of will feel undervalued. Eventually, (and this can happen quickly) they will choose to stop learning. #moedchat
A1) all students should be given and opportunity to learn, not all learn in the same way, at the same pace and on the same path. It is our professional duty to reach all. #moedchat
A1: Hands down, everyone deserves an education. Our job is to help all reach the highest potential. This means looking for and building upon strengths. #MOedchat
A1: Think of all the different car makes and manufacturers. If I tried to install a Jeep engine in a Prius, it wouldn’t go over well. Give them what they need. #moedchat

a1 I think it is important because it is easy to blame students when teaching isn't easy. We have to adjust what we want to accomplish to the students in front of us. #moedchat
A1: This is tricky. All deserve, but there are instances when we just can't. We try and stick to it, but it is frustrating when challenged by elements that we cannot control. #moedchat
Q2. Identifying and placing students in the appropriate classroom content level is vital to their success. Having said that. What are your thoughts on placing students in a more advanced course based in a desire or request by the student? #MOedchat
Good point, some kids just have too much going on to learn. They need their survival needs met first and we can't always do that. We just act like Sysiphus and keep trying #moedchat
A2: oh, tricky question! I can see where some students would work very hard when given the opportunity to choose, but I can see where that could backfire if the student truly isn’t willing to put forth the effort. #moedchat
A2 That is tough. I don't have to make those decisions, but I think that if a student has shown the necessary skills (i.e. competence, boredom in lower classes, etc.) then why not? #moedchat

A2: Being a rural district, we try to offer as many different learning opportunities as possible in a wide variety of ways. If a student has the drive and desire then why not give them a shot? #MOedchat

A2: Differentiate out at a higher level in the existing class and see how they respond. I am in the process of doing that base upon what I see in a couple I have who are in the same class, which is small. Easy fix. #moedchat
A2) I think students should have choice and a voice in their courses. For courses that are advanced or remedial, conversations need to be had with the S, make sure the expectations are known and the objectives. #moedchat
A3) choice, choice and more choice. I try to offer choice where I can, give variety, and know your students. Love seeing what my Ss come up with, I always learn from them. #moedchat
A3: Presenting material in different ways, letting Ss choose a strategy they like best, allow flexibility in how Ss demonstrate their learning, letting Ss learn from each other. #moedchat
A3: Three R’s...
Relationship - (most important, because you know what drives them)
Rigor - push them to their potential!
Relevance - how can you personalize learning and make it meaningful?
#MOedchat
a2 I have come to the conclusion that honors classes create equity issues because other students have no access to info & can't hop tracks without overcoming those issues #moedchat
I was talking recently with someone about adding video chat access with counselors to their school, wonderful idea. I think #mentalhealth should be just as important as academics or whatever else we can provide to help our kids be the best they can be #moedchat
A3) choice, choice and more choice. I try to offer choice where I can, give variety, and know your students. Love seeing what my Ss come up with, I always learn from them. #moedchat
Yes! They take ownership of their work. It also leads to critical thinking and problem. Love saying when they have a question “I don’t know, you selected the project, let’s figure it out!”#MoEdChat
A3 I think offering choice is the key, remove as many "compliance" elements as you can, it allows students freedom to be creative and show you things they can't do in other ways #moedchat
A4 It has forced teachers to explore and take more risks to increase and maintain a level of engagement that will hold on to the attention span of students #moedchat
Counseling should be mandatory for every student. Everyone gets time with a counselor at least twice a month. I was also talking with someone about how we just need a room of bunk beds so kids can get an extra hour of sleep when needed. #moedchat
A4 Tech allows for so many different avenues to create artifacts that show learning. If you get past the standard tests, you can allow your kids to show their knowledge in a way that best suits their style. #moedchat
a4 I have my own class-within-a-class. During non-critical sections, I pull strugglers onto Khan while the others move on. I prefer to motivate strugglers to catch up w/Khan at home, but most of the time the reason they struggle is because they don't put in the time. #moedchat
A4: It's easier to pinpoint what a S needs. Conferencing can be easier, digitally. It's challenging because Ss have to learn self control, and we have to teach Ss how to prioritize. I recently brought pencil paper into full swing, and it renewed confidence in many Ss. #moedchat
I agree 100%, one counselor per building doesn't meet the needs that many schools face. That's why the virtual counselor thing seemed so cool. Maybe the teachers could use it too ;) #moedchat
A4: The same way the light bulb changed our lives in 1879. We see life differently. The entire educational landscape has changed because of rapid advancements in technology. #MOedchat

a5 SEL happens in my learning teams because they have assigned roles. Part of those roles is learning how to support emotional needs as they learn math #moedchat
I think teachers probably would use the virtual counselor! The ASCA recommends one school counselor for every 250 students. I don't know any school that meets that suggestion. #moedchat
A5 Very delicately... I don't know. It is hard to balance that and consequences for actions. If we forego the results of actions because we feel bad for the situation or get too emotional, we don't really help them but we also can't ignore their need for safety #soapbox#moedchat
It'd be hard to do that. Counselors are just like gen ed teachers and get pulled in a million directions, whereas a virtual counselor only gets connected when needed. *Insert hands up in confusion emoji* #moedchat
A5a: We don't always do this. We try, but there is so much environmental anger. How do you fix a kid's heroin addict mom? When there is fear, there is anger. It's like riding a greenbroke horse. Regardless, education will not slow down because of pacing needs. #moedchat
A5: It is challenging because kids in a true trauma state usually need specific one on one assistance in the moment. It's hard as a classroom teacher to do that, and other resources are spread thin. #moedchat
Deep thoughts tonight with #moedchat. I’m ducking out early to catch the end of the game. There are some jeans days riding out it. Have a great week everyone! #ChiefsKingdom
Not to mention the confidentiality of situations where a teacher doesn't always know what is going on or what has happened in the past, makes it hard to be there for the child #moedchat
It is hard when there is a student that you can't reach but we owe it to them to find something that inspires them and allows them to learn, grow, and shine! #moedchat

Q6: Covey, Covey, Covey. "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens" It is super easy to put words into action. Sprinkle a little Love and Logic in the mix and you have a nice beefy stew of "handle it". #moedchat
A6 #moedchat ..... @myMSCA MO School Counselor Association Fall Conference (at Tan-Tar-A) is jampacked with helpful workshops and sessions to help all educators. https://t.co/f110ORdM1N
BA: My new line is "Is there something I can help you with?" I offer and in return, a student will scramble to get busy or maybe try. "Let's see what we can do." takes us from I to we. Use the right pronouns. It's not about you! #moedchat
