"Welcome to EdTechAfterDark! Our community was born out of discussions for a rich EdChat type gathering for those of us who are thinking about the digital edu-landscape long after the sun has gone down. For us night owls, when the clock strikes 10PM EST, you’ll find us on Twitter over at #edtechafterdark. All are welcome! Our discussions range from our philosophies about EdTech, digital best practices, and simply sharing our stories." --www.edtechafterdark.com
Welcome to #edtechafterdark! I’m Dan, tech coach from FL! I’ll be your host tonight, where we will be chatting about the potential caveats of the “Hustle” lifestyle. Introduce yourself, role in edu, location, and favorite “down time” hobby. Me? Sketching or video editing.
A1 sorry I’m late ... I think we martyr ourselves for our students when we need change our way of work so that we can be people outside of the classroom ☺️ #EdTechAfterDark
A2: it’s admirable that you want to finish a task to completion, however, rest is important to fill the tank and come at the task with fresh legs. Also, sometimes something needs to end and be rethought. Finishing to completion may b a waste in certain situations #edtechafterdark
A2: I think people in different places in their lives will have a different reaction to the quote. For teaching I think it can be harmful because the work is NEVER DONE. #edtechafterdark
A2: Balance is important in life. You can strive for excellence but the “I can do it all great and without help” is a myth. No one gets a medal for being a martyr #EdTechAfterDark
A3 in a @TEDTalks I recently realized that balance is kind of a facade ... I need to make every minute count - be present with work ethic in work & home ... idk if that answers the question #EdTechAfterDark
A3: I think in life, we are allowed to redo the product at work- it’s never perfect the first time, so this to should be applied to work products in school.... I do think we have to explicit teach executive functioning skills- whether low or high tech- #EdTechAfterDark
A4 I am ambitious... but I’ve changed my work style so that I can be at home when I am home ... I’ve determined that my family has to be more imp’t than my students who I adore .. so I grade less & take more time for F2F feedback #EdTechAfterDark
Ambition is so different for everyone & I think relies heavily on how one defines success. Success for me is trying to use my God given talents to help others, connect, empower, spread joy, love, laughter and empathy- learning through failure but not giving up #EdTechAfterDark
A5 In education ROI will look different for each student... college, career, tech, OJTraining ... if my student is a responsible citizen that pays their bills on time, then I did my job #EdTechAfterDark
A6 my change this year will be to prioritize my work - as my supervisor told me my #1 job during the day is to be the best tchr to my sts possible ... then coach #EdTechAfterDark
#edtechafterdark yes! And for my students with significant cognitive and communication challenges, if they are able to better communicate, manage their emotions and increase their Independence - and I have empowered them, their parents - we’re on the way
