#Edchat is a hashtag, a movement—it is a weekly organized Twitter discussion of educators and people interested in education that meet virtually from all over the world. #Edchat serves as a conversation thread on Twitter and is also used for organized weekly discussions.
One of the most rewarding parts of being a great teacher is to find the interesting stories that underlie the standards you're assigned to teach. These stories come from you. Your students. The community. #edchat

Is there a hierarchy of critical qualities to succeed as a teacher and principal? Do trust and relationships always supersede competence (e.g., knowing curr. methodology, supervision skills)? #edchat
5 Non negotiable’s for success w ur toughest kids:
1. Some is better than none.
2. Late is better than not at all.
3. Private is better than public.
4. Social skills are most important.
5. Forgiving/walking away = strength.

Bryk and Schneider talked about respect, integrity, competence and concern for others as critical leadership qualities, all part of trust. Do trust and respect supersede competence? #edchat
Yes, so do the qualities needed depend on the situation? Is it possible that something may come before trust and respect (in some cases)? That would surprise a lot of folks! Situational leadership? #edchat
Fact-checking is critically important. It’s not always fun. But that’s okay! It pushes me to be better.
It’s important that if fact-checkers are referees, everyone know the rules - and those rules be as clear + fair as possible for all to play.
Thank you for the work you do.

Dabo once said to me “A lot of teams focus on the process. Yes you must have a process. We have a process too. But we are all about the relationships that drive the process.”
Relationships > Process
@tomwhitby authenticity! People know and follow the “real deal” when they see it, those who walk thru life with heart and soul, who stay true to the right beliefs and who won’t back down. #edchat
Ironically, I think trust cannot come before relationship building and competence as critical qualities of successful teachers and leaders. Should I trust anyone who has not earned the trust? #edchat

A teacher needs a sense of balance when teaching students; the special needs kids, the advanced kids, and the quiet, compliant, as well as the kids who act out all need a teachers attention. #Edchat
We can talk about the importance of intangibles like trust, relationships, vision, etc., but then there are other critical needs, like TIME and quality instructional strategies that need to be built up the trust and relationships. #edchat
Zender and Folkman pointed out that we are hired for our technical skills but fired for a lack of human relations skills…the soft skills. Thanks @Aforbus#edchat
#Edchat In addition to trust & relationship:
- administrator support
- Positive culture
- Growth mindset
- Work life balance
- willingness to fail forward
Trust & Relationships can build your classroom, but the rest are essential for school wide success
According to what my momma used to tell me, I shouldn't trust anyone I do not know. Why should we assume the kids should instantly love and respect us just because we are their teacher? #edchat
Rather than beginning class with student rules/expectations, start by letting Ss know what YOU expect of YOURSElF. Let Ss understand your WHY and let them feel your passion. What impact do you wish to have on Ss? Let them know. Be upfront. Start the conversation. #PhysEd#edchat
Interesting point. What about when we move to a different district, state, or country? We may have been successful in site “A” but we still have to prove ourselves in site “B”. It’s exhausting! But maybe a good thing!? #edchat
As a teen, I had almost this same conversation with a professor in a summer program who felt like respect and trust were entitlements of positions. #edchat
Hmm. Maybe we should build a pyramid of qualities??? Would trust, relationships, vision be the foundation of the pyramid? Using time effectively sure seems important! #edchat

nothing is a given ... I have moved schools ... it took a couple of years to get the reputation built, but it happens and then you ride the wave. #edchat kids don't care what you did at a different school
Respect is to be earned, but we should not open the relationship with a lack of respect on the part of the student or the teacher. The same goes for leaders. #Edchat

it's there ... kids talk ... last year I had an elementary student (i'm at a K-8 school)come up to me and asked what grade I teach ... i said 8th and after a pause they indicated they would be in my class in 4 years. #edchat
Experience goes a long way as well. Through experience we learn more techniques and strategies that help us reach more students on an individual level. #edchat

A good teacher recognizes that without failure there is no learning. How to learn from failure should be a basic principle of a teacher's classroom. #Edchat

I agree…when a reputation is a known element. In some cases, initial interactions begin building the reputation that can lead to trust and respect…or not. #edchat
Time is essential! So many want to build that trust to have meaningful relationships but feel rushed to get content in before the bell rings.
What do we know about how kids learn? I truly feel students don’t care what you know until they know you care! #edchat

If teachers have a certain respect and power just because of the position, we should appreciate that and do everything we can to live up to those expectations. #edchat
So interesting. @blairteach Man, we have to earn respect and trust. Folks confuse the title on their door, or the title before/after their name as enough. It is unfortunate because in schools the students and teachers will suffer if the leadership is not authentic. #edchat
As a teen, I had almost this same conversation with a professor in a summer program who felt like respect and trust were entitlements of positions. #edchat
A teacher needs a sense of timing. Students learn more with the teacher than without. Time in class is limited, so teachers need to make the best of it. #Edchat
Respect is to be earned, but we should not open the relationship with a lack of respect on the part of the student or the teacher. The same goes for leaders. #Edchat
After more consideration, I think that there should be some level of respect afforded to the authority (teacher or admin) just based on their station, but trust will come later (or not). #Edchat

Hmm. Maybe it’s semantics. I get what you’re saying, but maybe (initially) it’s about being polite (rather that “respect”) until you assess the situation. #edchat
I can see that.....behave respectfully, even if the person hasn't yet earned your actual respect....I think for me, though, it goes beyond polite to those in authority. Maybe it's my southern roots showing..... #Edchat
@tomwhitby I love how @leadtofeed leadership challenge helps teenagers understand their true talents and encourage them to put their hearts into it to ignite good in world. That becomes their super power! #Leadership#edchat
I totally agree. Tough kids don't value "required" time. Not-required time is something they may never have experienced before, someone going out of their way to care. #edchat#genuinecare
Relatiomship building w the toughest kids does not count when required to be with them. Going out of our way to connect is how we change lives. #edchat#kidsdeserveit#tlap#thatonekid
